BIG AL's MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL DAYTIME HIGH ROLLER
At 5:00 pm, our selection is on the St. Louis Cardinals over the Philadelphia Phillies. Like the Brewers wanting to get Zack Greinke as many home starts as possible this post-season, the Cards would like to do the same with Jaime Garcia who is in his third season with the team after having a solid rookie campaign in 2010 (Garcia pitched very briefly with the team in 2008 and then missed all of the following year). At 13-7 with a 3.52 ERA Garcia has had a very good year, but that can't hide the fact that he's been much better at Busch Stadium than he has on the road. In 15 home starts, Garcia was 9-4 with a 2.55 ERA vs. only 4-3 with a 4.61 ERA in 17 starts on the road. But there is a bonus with Garcia today and that is that the 25-year-old lefthander from Mexico has also been very good in his short career against the Phillies. In six career appearances (four starts) against Philadelphia, Garcia is 2-1 with an excellent 1.20 ERA in 30 innings. The Phils send lefty Cole Hamels to the mound and Hamels actually has a losing record against the Cards (2-3) and those three losses include the 5-0 shutout at the hands of St. Louis and Chris Carpenter less than three weeks ago. His hitters won't have to face Carpenter today, but Hamels could certainly have his hands full with a very strong Cards lineup, and if there's any doubt about the damage the lineup can do, he just needs to consult with fellow southpaw Cliff Lee, who was lit up on Sunday by these guys. That's perhaps not surprising, as the Cards' .265 average vs. lefties in the regular season was third-best in the N.L. Coming into this game, the Cards have won six of the last nine meetings at home. Take the Cardinals. As always, good luck...Al McMordie
