      HOT LINES

      Friday's Best MLB Bet

St. Louis Cardinals at Philadelphia Phillies (-185, 7)

You have to love it when a series comes down to a pair of buddies sharing the hill in the deciding game. That’s exactly what we’re looking at with Philadelphia’s Roy Halladay going head-to-head with former teammate Chris Carpenter.

“Might be fitting that it goes down to a fifth game,” Phillies manager Charlie Manuel told reporters. “We’re a good team. They’re a good team. We’ve been in close games all year long. It’s up to us to go get it. It’s sitting right there for us. We’ve got our ace going and we’re at home, and so everything is sitting right there. And, basically, that’s why we worked like hell to get the home-field advantage.”

But the Cardinals hold all the momentum after David Freese hammered a huge two-run homer and drove in four runs while Lance Berkman added his fourth RBI of the series in Game 4’s 5-3 victory.

However, this line forces you into a tough decision. We like Halladay at home over Carpenter and home field advantage is obviously huge in the deciding game, but do you want to pay as much as -200 for the Phils as of Thursday evening? That’s a lot of chalk to swallow in a series that’s gone back and forth like this one.

Looking at the total, three of the four games have played over the number, but we see this one as an absolute pitching duel. We’ll hop on the under before the over/under drops any lower.

      PICK: Under

What Bettors Need to Know: NLDS Game 5 Betting Previews
        By Covers Staff

Arizona Diamondbacks at Milwaukee Brewers (-145, 7.5)
        Series Tied 2-2

THE STORY: After the Milwaukee Brewers dominated the first two games of the National League Division Series, the Arizona Diamondbacks found their bats in the desert. The first team since the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1977 to hit grand slams in back-to-back games in a postseason series, the Diamondbacks bashed their way back to even. Yovani Gallardo will try to slow the Arizona attack and earn his second win of the series when the Brewers host a decisive Game 5 in the National League Division Series on Friday.

        TV: 5:07 p.m. ET, TBS

WEATHER: The roof at Miller Park was closed for the first two games of the NLDS. If it stays open Friday, the could be winds of speeds up to 12 mph blowing in from right field.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks RH Ian Kennedy (0-1, 5.40 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Yovani Gallardo (1-0, 1.12 ERA).

Kennedy got knocked around for four runs on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings in Game 1 last week. His big mistake came in the seventh, when Prince Fielder belted a two-run homer right to extend the Milwaukee lead to 4-0. Kennedy finished the regular season with wins in his final seven decisions and pitched seven scoreless innings in his lone start against the Brewers on July 21.

Gallardo dominated the first game, striking out nine and yielding only one run on four hits in eight innings to grab the win. The 25-year old retired 14 of 15 through the middle innings, allowing the Brewers to pull away. Gallardo has never lost to Arizona in his career, posting a 5-0 record with a 1.20 ERA in five regular season starts.

ABOUT THE DIAMONDBACKS: Arizona is attempting to become the first National League team to overcome a 2-0 deficit in a best-of-five series in the wild card era. Paul Goldschmidt’s grand slam sparked the Game 3 win and Ryan Roberts followed that up right away in Game 4, blasting a grand slam of his own down the left field line in the first inning. Chris Young added two homers and three RBIs in the 10-6 triumph.

ABOUT THE BREWERS: The pressure is on Milwaukee, which is down to its final chance to close out the series after winning the first two games. Working in the Brewers’ favor besides Gallardo on the mound is Miller Park, where they posted the best home record in the majors at 57-24. Ryan Braun was just 1-for-7 at Chase Field after going 6-for-8 in the first two games.

        TRENDS:

        * Brewers are 6-0 in Gallardos last six starts vs. Diamondbacks.
        * Under is 3-1-1 in Gallardos last five starts vs. Diamondbacks.
        * Over is 5-2 in the last 7 meetings in Milwaukee.

FINAL PITCH: The Diamondbacks, who had grand slams in their final two home games of the regular season, became the first team ever with slams in four straight home games.

St. Louis Cardinals at Philadelphia Phillies (-180, 7)
        Series Tied 2-2

THE STORY: Roy Halladay and Chris Carpenter are former teammates and good friends. While the ex-Toronto Blue Jays hurlers will likely continue to exchange Christmas cards, each would like to get the better of the other in Game 5 of the National League Division Series at Citizens Bank Park on Friday. Although the Philadelphia Phillies owned baseball's best mark with a franchise-record 102 wins this season, anything less than a World Series will be considered a disappointment in the City of Brotherly Love. For their part, the St. Louis Cardinals won 23 of their last 32 to secure the wild card on the last day of the season.

        TV: 8:37 p.m. ET, TBS

WEATHER: Clear skies and light winds are in the forecast for Citizens Bank Park. Game-time temperatures will dip into the high 50s later in the evening.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Chris Carpenter (0-0, 12.00 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Roy Halladay (1-0, 3.37 ERA)

Carpenter's maiden attempt at pitching on three days' rest didn't go so well. The former Cy Young Award winner labored through three innings, permitting four runs on five hits while walking three in Game 2. For the 36-year-old Carpenter, it was just his second loss in seven postseason decisions. Now on his normal rest, Carpenter will look to take his best shot against Philadelphia, against which he has posted a 7-2 career mark.

Halladay overcame a shaky start to retire 21 consecutive batters as the Phillies raced to an 11-6 home win in Game 1 on Saturday. After yielding a three-run homer to Lance Berkman in the first inning, the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner didn't allow another hit after Skip Schumaker singled to lead off the second. Halladay allowed three runs on as many hits in eight innings. All told, Halladay is 3-1 in the postseason since coming over from Toronto.

ABOUT THE CARDINALS: St. Louis staved off elimination by overcoming an early two-run deficit to post a 5-3 win in Game 4 on Wednesday. After his two-run double gave the Cardinals a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning, Gateway City native David Freese deposited a fastball from Roy Oswalt over the fence in center field for a two-run shot in the sixth. After being sidelined with a hand injury, Matt Holliday returned to the starting lineup and scored twice. Schumaker exited Game 4 with a left hamstring cramp, but is expected to play on Friday. St. Louis is 10-5 in postseason series which have extended to the limit.

ABOUT THE PHILLIES: Philadelphia collected two runs on three hits in the first seven pitches of Game 4. Unfortunately for the Phillies, they went 4-for-29 with four singles the rest of the way. Jimmy Rollins continued his strong postseason with his second consecutive 2-for-4 effort and fourth straight multi-hit effort of the series. Home cooking wasn't kind to Ryan Howard. The St. Louis native went 0-for-8 with five strikeouts in Games 3 and 4 at Busch Stadium. Howard will need to do better if the Phillies hope to advance to their fourth straight NLCS.

        TRENDS:

        * Cardinals are 6-0 in Carpenters last six starts vs. Phillies.
        * Cardinals are 5-0 in Carpenters last five road starts vs. Phillies.
        * Over is 6-1-1 in Carpenters last eight starts vs. Phillies.
        * Over is 4-1 in Carpenters last five road starts vs. Phillies.

FINAL PITCH: The last time Philadelphia has played in the maximum length of a series was 1981, when it lost to the Montreal Expos in the Eastern Division playoffs.

          BANG THE BOOK

          Friday's Best CFB Bet

Boise State Broncos at Fresno State Bulldogs (+20.5, 59)

The Boise State Broncos will be in the national spotlight again this Friday night as they travel to take on the Bulldogs of Fresno State. Pat Hill’s team always relishes the chance to knock off a highly ranked opponent. Do the Bulldogs have enough firepower to stay with the Broncos this season?

Kellen Moore had one of the worst games of his career in his last week’s win over Nevada. Moore threw for just 142 yards, and he threw two interceptions. For a star like Moore, a game like that is extremely surprising, but I don’t expect to see two poor games in a row from him. Moore is one of the best quarterbacks in the land, and he makes great decisions with the football. Doug Martin and D.J. Harper are both high quality running backs for Boise, but the offensive line needs to do a little better job opening up holes for them. Tyler Shoemaker has just 13 catches this season, but six of them have been for a touchdown.

The Broncos defense dominated Nevada last weekend, and this is once again a very underrated unit. Boise State’s defense is solid against both the run and the pass. Boise State is allowing just 16.8 points per game this season. Though the defense doesn’t get a ton of attention, this unit has become a major strength for Boise State.

Fresno State is just 2-3 so far this season, but Pat Hill’s team will always put up a tough fight. David Carr’s younger brother, Derek Carr, is the quarterback for the Bulldogs this season. Carr is just a sophomore, but he has the skills to be a very good player for Fresno State. Robbie Rouse has been a very good running back for the Bulldogs. Rouse already has 600 yards this season, and he really has turned into the team’s workhorse. This offense is averaging 31 points per game so far this year.

The Bulldogs defense has struggled quite a bit against the run this year. Mississippi ran for 238 yards last weekend, and that Rebels team was struggling badly coming into that game. This is a defense that is giving up 32.4 points per game this year, which is 97th out of 120 teams in the nation.

Boise State is 21-7 ATS in their last 28 road games. Fresno State isn’t as good this year as they have been in the past. I think the Broncos cover here.

          PICK: Boise State Broncos -20.5

Boise State at Fresno State: What Bettors Need To Know
            By Covers Staff

Boise State Broncos at Fresno State Bulldogs (+20.5, 59)

THE STORY: Boise State isn’t currently in the same conference as Fresno State but looks to continue its recent one-sided mastery of the Bulldogs when the two teams meet in Fresno on Friday night. The No. 6 Broncos have defeated Fresno State five straight times and have averaged 48.4 points during the streak, including scoring 51 or more points each of the past three seasons. Fresno State is still part of the Western Athletic Conference this season but joins Boise State in the Mountain West next season.

            TV: ESPN

LINE MOVES: Boise State opened as high as -21 and has been bet down slightly. The total opened at 58 points and had climbed with money on the over.

ABOUT FRESNO STATE (2-3, 2-3 ATS): The Bulldogs are averaging 30.6 points but are allowing even more at 32.4. Fresno State allowed 42 points to Nebraska, 36 to California and gave up 38 last Saturday to a Mississippi squad that entered the contest as one of the worst offensive teams in the nation. Quarterback Derek Carr has a strong arm and has passed for 1,291 yards and 10 touchdowns. Running back Robbie Rouse (600 yards) has topped 100 yards in four straight games. Big-play receiver Jalen Saunders had 127 yards receiving and 57 yards rushing against Ole Miss. Defensive tackle Logan Harrell (8.5 tackles for loss) is Fresno State’s top defender.

ABOUT BOISE STATE (4-0, 2-2): Quarterback Kellen Moore is coming off a shaky game in which he passed for a career-low 142 yards and was intercepted twice in a victory over Nevada. Moore (12,004) did become the 16th player in college history to top 12,000 career yards. He ranks eighth in career passing touchdowns with 113. Running back Doug Martin (328 yards) had a season-best 126 rushing yards for his 11th career 100-yard performance. Receiver Geraldo Boldewijn will play for the first time since this season after missing the first four games due to an eligibility situation. Cornerback Jerrell Gavins (knee) is likely done for the season. He has three of Boise State’s seven interceptions. Defensive end Tyrone Crawford has a team-best five tackles for losses.

            EXTRA POINTS

            1. Boise State leads the series 9-4 and won last year’s meeting 51-0.

            2. Bulldogs coach Pat Hill is just 1-9 against Boise State with the victory coming in 2005.

            3. Saunders is the first Fresno State player with three consecutive 100-yard receiving games since Bernard Berrian in 2001.

            TRENDS:

            * Broncos are 5-0 ATS in their last five meetings.
            * Favorite is 10-1 ATS in their last 11 meetings.
            * Broncos are 4-1 ATS in their last five meetings in Fresno State.
            * Home team is 5-2 ATS in their last seven meetings.

PREDICTION: Boise State 49, Fresno State 23 – The Broncos should find scoring against Fresno State to be an easy proposition while cruising to another victory.

Carter Set To Debut For Blue Jackets vs. PredatorsBy Brian Hunter

Nashville Predators at Columbus Blue Jackets (-110, 5)
PREDATORS (0-0-0) at BLUE JACKETS (0-0-0)

              TV: FS-TN, FS-O (HD)

SEASON SERIES: First of six meetings this season between these Central Division rivals. The Predators took four of six from the Blue Jackets in 2010-11, although Columbus won two of the three games played at Nationwide Arena.

Nashville captain Shea Weber led his team in scoring with 2 goals and 6 points, while Antoine Vermette had 3 goals and 6 points and RJ Umberger had 1 goal and 6 points to pace Columbus. Pekka Rinne played every minute in goal for the Predators, posting a 2.14 goals-against average and .929 save percentage, while Steve Mason had a 2.16 GAA and .913 save percentage in making five of six starts for the Jackets.

BIG STORY: Nashville has qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in six of the past seven seasons, while Columbus has just one postseason berth in the franchise's history. But the Blue Jackets did some restructuring during the offseason, making a gigantic trade with the Flyers to acquire forward Jeff Carter, who gives them an elite scorer to pair with captain Rick Nash. They also gave a big contract to defenseman James Wisniewski, but he'll be ineligible to play due to an eight-game suspension for an illegal check during the preseason.

              TEAM SCOPE:

PREDATORS: Stability has been the name of the game for a franchise that has employed one GM (David Poile) and one coach (Barry Trotz) in its 12 NHL seasons. If it ain't broke, why fix it, and Nashville comes off a season in which it not only made the playoffs once again in an ultra-competitive Western Conference, but won its first playoff series against Anaheim. Coming off an excellent preseason in which the Predators won seven of eight, they'll look to get off to a quick start in the division with road games on consecutive nights against Columbus and St. Louis.

"We have a lot of depth on a very young roster," Poile said. "We have 30 guys who can play for us."

BLUE JACKETS: When Columbus made it to the playoffs in the spring of 2009, the franchise seemed poised to take the next step in becoming an annual contender. But it turned out to be one step forward and a couple steps back, leading to an eventful past summer in which young forward Jakub Voracek was shipped out in the deal that brought Carter back, and veterans like Vinny Prospal and Radek Martinek were also added to the mix. Second-year coach Scott Arniel came out of training camp pleased with the roster he'll be taking into opening night.

"All the young guys that we've talked about -- the forwards that are fighting for spots as well as the defensemen -- they've played well and it's been good," Arniel said.

"We wanted a competitive camp; I really like the competition in our team this year."

WHO'S HOT: The Predators' power play connected in four consecutive games to close the preseason, a positive sign for a team that often struggles to generate offense. The power play ranked 26th in the League last season. … Mason stopped 113 of 121 shots for a .934 save percentage in winning all four of his preseason starts for the Blue Jackets.

INJURY REPORT: Nashville forward Mike Fisher will start the season on injured reserve following offseason shoulder surgery, as will defenseman Francis Bouillon, who has a concussion. … Columbus forward Kristian Huselius is out indefinitely after pectoral surgery. Mark Dekanich, acquired from Nashville to be the backup goalie, is on injured reserve with an ankle sprain. As a result, Curtis Sanford made the team. Forward Jared Boll is on injured reserve with a broken thumb. Forwards Matt Calvert (groin) and Tomas Kubalik (concussion) are day-to-day.

STAT PACK: Martin Erat and Sergei Kostitsyn each finished with 50 points last season to lead the Predators in scoring. Kostitsyn had a team-high 23 goals. … The Blue Jackets were a solid faceoff team last season, winning 51.2 percent of their draws to tie with the Devils for eighth in the League.

PUCK DROP: Carter scored 46 goals three seasons ago and played in the Stanley Cup Final the following spring. He joins a locker room full of promising talent that hopes to put it all together and turn Columbus back into a playoff team.

"There's an excitement in the room that you can feel," Nash told the Columbus Dispatch. "Look around. We've got guys who have done it before, and that's a good feeling."

                Friday's Best NHL Bets

Nashville Predators at Columbus Blue Jackets (-110, 5)

If you’re looking for a team that has a lot to play for early in this NHL season, look no further than the Nashville Predators.

Their top defensive pairing – and likely the best duo in the league – Shea Weber and Ryan Suter are both playing in the final year of their contracts. Plus, the defensive unit was good enough to send 2009 first-round pick Ryan Ellis down to the AHL as it is.

“A lot of guys have made it really hard (for us) and that’s great,” coach Barry Trotz told reporters. “We have a lot of guys who can play for us right now. If anyone backs off in terms of their effort or their play, we have lots of people who can jump in there.”

Then, of course, there’s goaltender Pekka Rinne. All he did was win 33 games with a 2.12 goals against average and a .930 save percentage.

While we won’t put much stock in preseason play, it looks as though the Preds are more than ready to roll after going 7-1 in the exhibition games. This team is going to do some major damage this season.

                PICK: Nashville Predators

New York Rangers at Los Angeles Kings (-125, 5)

The Rangers and Kings finally get together for a game that means something after spending the last week or so touring around Europe playing exhibition games.

Sounds like a nice vacation, but like any excursion abroad, the travel can really get to you. New York had a spotless record heading into its last preseason matchup but was then pounded 8-4 by Ev Zug on Monday. It was the club’s fourth game in four different countries over a five-day span.

They’ve been idle since then as far as games go, though far from that with transactions. They waived pesky forward Sean Avery and picked up defenseman Woywitka to try to fill the gap that Marc Staal’s absence has left with his concussion symptoms.

These European games are always a handicapping crapshoot, but don’t expect a scoring spree. Henrik Lundqvist and Jonathan Quick are two of the best in the business between the pipes and the two clubs will feel each other out in this one.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 15
                  By David Schwab

It getting to be crunch time in the CFL with just five weeks left in the regular season. Last week a few teams took a step closer towards securing a spot in the postseason, while a few continued their pace towards an early offseason. Montreal started things off last Friday by reclaiming a share of the East Division lead with a 32-26 victory over Winnipeg as a seven-point road favorite. In the second game on Friday, British Columbia ran its winning streak to six with a 33-24 win over Edmonton as a six-point home favorite.

Saturday’s action kicked-off with Calgary burying Saskatchewan 40-3 as a six-point home favorite to take the outright lead in the West Division. Week 14 wrapped-up with Hamilton making it a clean sweep for the favorite’s straight-up with a 27-12 victory over Toronto as a four-point road favorite.

The following is brief preview of this week’s games along with the opening point spread and ‘over/under’ lines as provided by TheGreek.com.

                  Friday, October 7

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Hamilton Tiger Cats (-4) Over/Under (53)

Winnipeg’s two-game losing streak has dropped it into a tie with the Alouettes for the lead in the East at 8-5 SU (9-4 against the spread). It is 4-2 both SU and ATS on the road and the total has gone ‘over’ in three of its last four games. Hamilton is just one-game back in the East at 7-6 SU and ATS. It is 4-2 SU (3-3 ATS) at home this season and the total has gone ‘over’ in eight of its last 10 games.

The Blue Bombers will be going for their third win over the Tiger Cats this season after beating them 24-16 in Week 1 as 8 ½-point road underdogs and again 30-27 win as 3 ½-point home favorites in Week 9. Hamilton is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings and the total has gone ‘over’ in five of the last eight games. A big factor in this one could be the health of Winnipeg quarterback Buck Pierce, who missed last week’s game with sore ribs.

Buck Pierce should be back behind center and that’s good news for the Bombers although they are still without their two best running backs.

Despite injuries and with Alex Brink starting at QB, Winnipeg came a yard short of beating the Montreal Alouettes for the second time. With Pierce back in the lineup, the Bombers will be even more threatening even though he has thrown more interceptions (13) than touchdowns (12). The Bombers lost four of their last five and should be hungry but the defense must step up and prove as intimidating as it was in the first eight games of the year.

That starts with DE Odell Willis. Willis managed only four sacks and eight tackles in his last six games after notching eight sacks and 12 tackles in his first six.

The Tiger-Cats have won their last two games against Calgary and Toronto but have been showing some inconsistency all year long. This said, RB Terry Grant brings tons of speed and with Avon Cobourne as well, the Tiger-Cats have a dual threat on the ground. Wideout Marcus Thigpen also makes the offense more explosive.

                    PICK: Hamilton Tiger Cats

                      Key Stat

.235 – The Anaheim Ducks open their regular season in Helsikini, Finland against the Buffalo Sabres in a 1 p.m. ET start. The Ducks have a .235 winning percentage in season openers (4-13-0).

                      Injury That Shouldn’t Be Overlooked

Dave Bolland, Chicago Blackhawks – Bolland (upper-body) is practicing with the Blackhawks, but won’t take part in the club’s opener Friday against the Dallas Stars. The Blackhawks are thin up the middle as it is and are experimenting with Patrick Kane at center, so they could struggle if Bolland is out for any length of time. He had 15 goals and 37 points in 61 games for Chicago last season.

                      Game Of The Day

St. Louis Cardinals at Philadelphia Phillies (-185, 7)

                      Notable Quotable

"You can't even chart every formation they have. What you have to do is be able to understand what they're trying to do with the personnel on the field and play defense to stop personnel groupings, not formations. There's just too many formations to work on in any one week, two weeks or three weeks. They run multiple formations." – Fresno State coach Pat Hill on preparing for the Boise State Broncos. The Bulldogs focused on offensive and defensive assignments and strategy instead of a heavy hitting practice on Monday.

                      Notes And Tips

Winnipeg Blue Bombers quarterback Buck Pierce will play Friday against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats after missing last week’s loss to Montreal with a rib injury. In 12 games, Pierce has chucked for 2,680 yards with 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions to lead the Blue Bombers to 8-5 record, 9-4 against the spread. He’ll have a target on his chest, too. “I’m not trying to take a shot at him,” Hamilton defensive lineman Stevie Braggs told reporters this week. “But if I get a chance to sack him? Of course. I’ll put this 250 pounds on him and just lay on him a little bit and say, ‘Hello, how are you doing?’ Converse with him a little bit." Hamilton is set as a 3-point home favorite.

Down 2-0 heading into the third game of the WNBA finals, the Atlanta Dream are looking for a little love from the officials. Minnesota downed Atlanta 101-95 in Game 2 as a 5.5-point favorite despite Angel McCoughtry’s 38 points – a finals record. After the loss she was steamed about the 33 fouls called against Atlanta compared to 23 against Minnesota. "Let us battle out. Let us scratch and claw to the end. It's entertainment. That's what people want to see," McCoughtry told reporters. Atlanta is set as a 4-point home favorite in Game 3.

The Colorado Buffalos have suspended five defensive players indefinitely for violating unspecified team rules, coach Jon Embree announced Thursday. Defensive backs Josh Moten, Ayodeji Olatoye, Parker Orms and Paul Vigo, along with linebacker Liloa Nobriga were suspended. Orms is the lone starter of the group. Embree said the reason for the suspensions did not involve law enforcement. The players will be unable to participate in football-related activities in the meantime. Colorado is a big 29.5-point underdog at Stanford on Saturday.
