Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    July 8, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Yonkers Raceway has an 11-race card. The 0.50 Pick 5 with a $10,000 guaranteed pool begins in Race 5. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 8, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 8 (9:20 PM EST)

3-Covered Bridge (6-1)-Faded in last at this level but was used hard to get the top into a 26.3 quarter and a 55.2 half. Looks like good value at the program price of 6-1 after going off at 8/5 last time, and the trip should be kinder tonight.
5-Hellabalou (3-1)-Shipped in from Nfld and faced this kind after being off 16 days between races. Put in an even effort, will look for better this time and has hit the board in 21 of 31 at YR was 9 pictures.
7-Desperate Man (5/2)-Can win from the outside and the pace could be hot. Matt Kakaley should have the 6-yr-old in striking range and could finish fastest of all.

    Race 9 (9:40 PM EST)

2-Coaches Corner (2-1)-Has been battling tough customers and should relish the company. Hasn’t raced since the Gold Cup at Mohawk on June 15 and being off 3 weeks shouldn’t matter. This race probably goes through the Per Engblom pupil.
3-Pound for Pound (6-1)-Faded in last versus this kind after being used hard to get the top. Could land on the point with this post draw and then relinquish to the chalk, Coaches Corner. Worth a swing at 6-1, should be racing near the favorite throughout and does have the speed to win with a smooth journey.

    Race 10 (10:00 PM EST)

1-Hunting Zone (8/5)-Bumps up, but from this post will be bet anyway and will respect chances, but won't offer any value. George Brennan could be on top by the 1st turn or no worse than in the pocket and should be in the hunt at the wire.
3-Frequent Image (3-1)-The Alexander trainee may get revenge tonight on the one above after finishing 2nd. Put in the most work last time leaving from the 8-hole and getting on the engine. Comes back in sequence here, missed a start last time and the 5-year-old may take its 1st picture this year in the 2nd race for new connections.

    Race 11 (10:20 PM EST)

1-South Point (2-1)-Joe B steers the Ron Burke 4-year-old who ships in from Pocono and makes it Yonkers debut. Has been facing $40k claimers, should fit, and does have speed. Making the turns is a question mark, but this barn usually puts them in where they can win.
3-That Dog Will Hunt (5/2)-The Huntsville 4-year-old has been claimed in the last 6 starts. Won for trainer Victoria Stratton on 5-30. This will be the 2nd start for that outfit and was stuck with post 7 last time. Does best racing near the top of the stack and should get there in good shape tonight.
6-Lootable (8-1)-Had an even effort in the first start in town. Wasn't bad in that race, stayed inside but did pace the back half in 56.2. Will look for an aggressive try and hope there won't be much betting interest.

    $1.00 Late Pick 4

    3,5,7/2,3/1,3/1,3,6
    Total Bet=$36

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #5
#6 Heaven Rules She didn't beat much in the score last out, but I liked the way she did it while racing fresh off the bench. She draws well outside of the other pace and can attack her way to a score here.
#3 Awatea She didn't have to work too hard to graduate in her local debut last time around, but she'll have some pace company from the one drawn just inside of her, and the the top choice should be keeping tabs on her the entire way.
#1 How Sweet She Is She ran OK enough in her only local start here last year, and she would benefit if a few of the forward players hooked up and this race came apart late. In the mix.
Race Summary Heaven Rules gets a good draw to force the issue today after turning in a sharp comeback run last out, and any upside from there would make her tough right back.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #6
#1 I Recall Curious to see if she'll offer any kind of playable short price in here, but I think she's going to get a dreamy trip from the inside in a spot without much other finishing punch. Tough if she's ready to fire fresh.
#3 Well Into Turnback pace might like the local trip and has some upside while making the second start back off the break. Capable player, but I worry she's going to be overbet.
#7 Single Lady Her previous local form isn't a whole lot to write home about, but she might have the right kind of one-paced tracking style to plug along for a share.
Race Summary I Recall has run well over the local footing in the past, and she should be able to settle in just behind the more committed forward players while everything unfolds early.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #7
#3 Rock N Reward Toss the comeback try at Penn and you're left with some pretty reliable local form that might leave her in a a good place while the speedier players sort themselves out.
#4 Flamingo Way She has been a progressive type through three starts so far, and she looks dangerous if there is a step forward in the second start back off the bench. Just wonder if she's going to have some company.
#2 Carmelina While her best game comes on the engine, she has been in with some decent groups over the last year and wouldn't be a total shock on class with this group.
Race Summary Have to consider #5 Back Forty off the sharp Penn form, but I'm not sure the price is going to be appealing enough to see how she likes it here. Rock N Reward has some midrange price appeal with reliable local form.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Delaware Park - Race #3
#4 PETINGAS TWIN (2-1) Seeks three-peat, last three sprint victories were by a combined 25 lengths.
#7 AWESOME FLAY (10-1) Fires fresh, gets pace to rally into, price attached for gimmick wagers.
#6 RUN POPPY (5-1) Versatile, 10/3-3-2 record at 6F, runs for Hiraldo.
Race Summary PETINGAS TWIN, first or second in all seven non-stakes sprints during a $100k season, earned his top speed figure in a 6F romp around Delaware Park in early June. Hard to look past him until proven otherwise. Bet to win and place.
        Delaware Park - Race #6
#10 STYLE POINTS (2-1) Win at 1-3/16 miles and ‘no lasix’ rule could favor two-time G-3 runner-up.
#4 BELLE OF RIGHTS (8-1) Found clear path at top of lane and was hand-ridden to allowance win.
#5 WHISKEY DECISION (3-1) ‘Kicked away readily’ in an allowance race dominated by deep closers.
Race Summary STYLE POINTS broke through after a pair of Grade 3 placings with a turf marathon victory in a six-figure allowance at Keeneland. She raced with no Lasix in her Grade 3 efforts, perhaps giving her an edge over her main rivals, who face that task for the first time on the grass today. Bet to win and place.
        Delaware Park - Race #2
#9 APRIL APRIL (6-1) Finding a home on turf, adds blinkers, must navigate expected traffic.
#12 MARY KATHERINE (5-2) Rallied for minor awards in 3 of last 4, draws post 12, lures Castellano.
#2 MISCHIEFNESS (10-1) Sustained a 3-wide run on the turn to break maiden in second start as 3yo.
Race Summary APRIL APRIL validated an upset win on the turf with a troubled third next out. She rallied into the stretch while the winning favorite was in full flight, steadied off the heels of the runner-up and gained late in a longer route race. She gets blinkers and gets the call for a win and place wager.

              # 1 FIGHT IN THE DOG 9/5
I've got to go with METANOIA. Overall, has one of the best earnings per start in dirt route races in this bunch. REGAL MISS - When this jockey and handler team up, gamblers often make money. Ought to be given a shot - I like the numbers from the last race. FIGHT IN THE DOG - Will probably go to the front end and could never look back. She should have a strong outing versus this less demanding group.

                Prairie Meadows - Race #5 - Post: 5:42pm - Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $18,978 Class Rating: 52

                Rating:

                #6 SORCERER'S GIRL (ML=7/2)

SORCERER'S GIRL - Ran in the last race against much better horses at Prairie Meadows. The move down the ladder based on class rating points should suit her well. I think that a sprinter coming off a layoff will usually run her best in the 3rd or 4th start back. That recent bullet 35.0 work shows that this filly is ready for a top performance today. This horse earns a lot of dough per start. I believe she can increase the lifetime bankroll right here.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #4 SKYLAR'S FIRE (ML=2/1), #3 UNGLUED (ML=3/1), #5 NAUTICAL MISS (ML=4/1),

SKYLAR'S FIRE - When examining today's class figure, she will have to earn a much better rating than in the last race to be competitive in this dirt sprint. UNGLUED - You always think this horse has a shot to win, but she fails often. Finished first in her most recent race with a mediocre speed rating. When I look at today's class figure, it would take an improved performance to win after that in this group. NAUTICAL MISS - If you keep selecting these sort of 'hanger' types, you're going to be frustrated most of the time.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Go with #6 SORCERER'S GIRL on top if we're getting at least 1/1 odds

                  # 1 DR JACK FLYER 8/5
                  # 2 TONKAWA SPRINGS 2/1
SKYHOOPER looks like the bet in here particularly if the morning line of 8/1 holds. Is worth taking a close look at and may be a bet - strong speed figures (62 average) at today's distance and surface as of late. Reyes has strong numbers that point to this gelding to be a strong contender. With Reyes on top him, this gelding will probably be able to break out quickly in this event. DR JACK FLYER - Farrior has one of the top winning percentages in this field with entries running at this distance and surface. Will most likely be one of the early speedsters of the group going into the halfway point of the contest. TONKAWA SPRINGS - He should have a strong outing versus this softer lot. Overall, has one of the best earnings per start in dirt route contests in this lot.

                    Louisiana Downs - Race #2 - Post: 4:30pm - Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $8,500 Class Rating: 66

                    Rating:

                    #4 LITTLE BURRITO (ML=5/2)
                    #1 MDA SENORITA RUN (ML=6/1)

LITTLE BURRITO - The recent bullet 36.1 work should put this mare on track for today's outing. Took a drop in class last time around the track, and keeps in that lower level right here. A good sign this horse is comfortable and ready to go. PP data show this thoroughbred with three improving speed figs. Wade should be on a horse ready to win in this event. MDA SENORITA RUN - Dominguez comes to ride after getting to know the filly in the last affair. Good return on investment for this jock and conditioner duo. I like that latest contest on Jun 24th at Louisiana Downs where she ran first.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #5 BEULAH K (ML=2/1), #3 LEPRECHAUN CHARM (ML=7/2), #2 TAKEN IT (ML=8/1),

BEULAH K - You think this horse is going to be first just because she's always close. Just doesn't finish on top often. LEPRECHAUN CHARM - Should have at least finished in the money in the last two months in a short distance clash to be any kind of value at low odds in a sprint. TAKEN IT - Awfully hard to play this horse when she hasn't been showing any indications of eagerness of late.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #4 LITTLE BURRITO is going to be the play if we are getting 7/5 or better
                    EXACTA WAGERS: Box [1,4]
                    TRIFECTA WAGERS: Pass
                    SUPERFECTA WAGERS: Pass
