Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    July 22, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia

Yonkers Raceway has an 11-race card. The 0.50 Pick 5 with a $10,000 guaranteed pool begins in Race 5. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 8, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 8 (9:20 PM EST)

4-Hemsworth N (5/2)- Looking for an aggressive steer with Scott Zeron in the bike and drawing inside of the toughest customers should help chances. Looks like a main player with a smooth trip and knows how to beat this kind.
6-Energetic Hanover (3-1)-The 3-race win streak was snapped in last. But left from post 8 and was coming off a sick scratch. Will use in a short field, thinking a top effort is coming and hopefully won’t be over bet.

    Race 9 (9:40 PM EST)

4-Big Gulp (5/2)-Raced evenly last time when dropped to this level but was off for 3 weeks. Beat similar for its last win on May 20th and should be a major player if dialed on high.
5-Century Heinekin (8-1)-Comes off a no-move mile from post 7 at this condition. Gets post relief, does better racing near the top of the stack and Tyler Buter should get there without much trouble. Using at a price in what could be a chalky sequence, and this is a field with question marks.

    Race 10 (10:00 PM EST)

2-Just Enuff Stuff (5/2)-Didn't race poorly at all in the 1st start for the DeVita barn but wasn't beating the one below. Could get revenge if takes advantage of an inside draw and improves some in the 2nd race for the new connections.
6-Verdun (2-1)-Winner of 4 in a row was in command from start to finish last week. Will probably be an odds-on choice again but hasn't drawn this far outside since the win streak began.

    Race 11 (10:20 PM EST)

4-Two Faced (8/5)-Will look to single, recent form has been so-so but now drops to the level of past success. George Brennan could have the pedal down and go gate to wire. Has been popular at the claim box for $30,000 so expecting on the drop will be dialed on high in the 3rd start for the Di Domenico barn.

    $2.00 Late Pick 4

    4,6/4,5/2,6/4
    Total Bet=$16

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #2
#5 Art Nouveau She rallied with a little enthusiasm in the debut run and might have some room to come forward off that. Reasonable upside makes her tough today.
#4 Hazard Pay She has shown some speed in both of her starts and just failed to stay late, but she stacks up well enough with this kind and wouldn't be a shock from close range again.
#2 Tessitura Debuter brings a big pedigree for a capable team, but she's probably got a brighter future going a bit longer than this, and I worry the price won't be quite fair given her realistic chances first out. In the mix.
Race Summary Art Nouveau might have something a little better to offer today, and that could be good enough to land what might not be the deepest local race for the level this summer.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #6
#4 Yankee Dollar She has always run well over the local footing and has some bounce-back potential after a flat run at Thistledown last out. Tactical pace might fall into a perfect trip behind some more committed forward players.
#6 She's Fire Not much wrong with her local form, and there are some pretty tough customers in her company lines out of some of those stakes tries. Capable player here.
#2 Marksman Queen Pressing pace might have to sit a touch further off it today if Sand and Sea wants to have another fun run up top, but something like her last would probably make her tough here if she can replicate it.
Race Summary Yankee Dollar has some decent back form over the local footing and is capable of something better than she showed last time around. She could stay at a just playable price, too.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #7
#1 Brumba Waffle Toes He has been in tough with some of these in the races on his page, but there seems to be a decent bit of pace signed on today that could set things up for him to settle, save some ground, and rally past late at a price.
#7 He's a Mess His form is all over the place, but his better runs keep him in the mix with this kind of group, and I like that his form woke up a little bit when he got back over the local footing last out.
#2 Going Up Stretchout player faces older here and probably doesn't get a really comfortable lead with some other solid pace lined up, but he could take them for a long run on the engine.
Race Summary Brumba Waffle Toes could get the right kind of race flow to give him a chance at a price today, and he should appreciate getting back around two turns today.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Parx - Race #1
#5 ACTION DREAM (8-1) Good recent form, ideal setup offsets poor record in dreadful field.
#2 BADBADBOBBY (5-1) Held third in fast-paced route, makes third start of cycle.
#1 FREE BIRD BORDO (4-1) Hit board in 4 of 9 at Parx, barn good with sprint-to-route angle.
Race Summary Someone has to win in a field that is – get this – a combined 11-for-240. ACTION DREAM is as good as any, rallying for second in his last two starts behind a 3-to-5 and 8-to-5 front-end winners. At 1-for-34, his new trainer saw something he liked. Bet to win and place and play a 1-2-5 exacta box.
        Parx - Race #2
#3 CHANCE OCCURRENCE (3-1) Ran best race in this spot, can break maiden in 12th try at Parx.
#6 ROYAL UPSTART (7-2) Took aim at 1-to-9 winner on dirt two back but settled for second best.
#1 MISSUPTOWNTOODELOU (5-1) Improved third in first try at distance, returns to claim level.
Race Summary CHANCE OCCURRENCE earned the top speed figure in the field on conventional dirt this year when she finished second in the same spot to the 4-to-5 favorite. She prompted the pace to mid-stretch in a 7-1/2F turf race last out before the closers passed by. Play a 3,6/1,3,6/ALL trifecta.
        Parx - Race #4
#3 CORONA CAMPIONE (4-1) In top form, can return quick claim dividend on the class rise.
#1 LIL LATE LUCK (8-1) Steady check-getter fired blank in latest, can land share at good price on best.
#7 JAVA’S LUCKY LADY (5- Broke maiden for $16k, tired chasing fast pace in follow-up.
Race Summary CORONA CAMPIONE angled wide for the stretch drive, got the jump on her late-running pursuers and won on the class drop. She is in top form and can repeat on the class hike off the claim. Bet to win and place and play a 1-3-7 exacta box.

              # 6 EAST COAST GIRL 6/1
BUSTIN AWAY is my choice. He has recorded respectable numbers under today's conditions and ought to fare well against this group. Change in Lasix (on Lasix) may be the recipe to a reversal of fortune. Should be considered here on the basis of the figures in the speed section alone. SHARPAZ - As of late Barrow has provided gamblers with a strong winning percentage with horses racing in dirt sprint races. EAST COAST GIRL - Has to be given a shot in this race if only for the competitive Equibase Speed Fig recorded in the last competition. Win percentage under similar conditions may be the key for this horse.

                Prairie Meadows - Race #9 - Post: 7:26pm - Handicap - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $40,000 Class Rating: 95

                Rating:

                #6 OUR LAST CHANCE (ML=6/1)
                #3 COMISKEY PARK (ML=3/1)
                #1 OUR CORNERSTONE (ML=5/2)

OUR LAST CHANCE - Stand by this horse. No other viable pace gives this horse a strong chance at the winner's circle. This gelding is at the top in earnings per start. Take a long look at this horse in the paddock. Racing over a familiar track, where he has won multiple times before, I have to put this horse at the top of my list of contenders in this race. COMISKEY PARK - This gelding is rounding his way back into shape. Should perform well today. A horse coming back this promptly after a nice effort is a good signal. A little change in scenery has got to do this horse well. Reading the past performance lines, it seems like he likes to visit the winner's circle on different ovals. OUR CORNERSTONE - Won his last after shipping in. I like him again. The jock/handler duet of Triana and Stephens has a strong ROI together. Should do well in this event. Weight shift of -7 from Jun 30th race at Prairie Meadows.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #2 TRIPULANTE (ML=7/2), #5 DIAMOND CITY (ML=4/1), #4 PEACE DOG (ML=5/1),

TRIPULANTE - Registered a quite unimpressive speed figure last time around the track in a $30,000 Optional Claiming race on May 25th. Doubtful to see an improved performance off of that rating. DIAMOND CITY - Tough to keep following this kind of 'bridesmaid' horse. PEACE DOG - Finished fifth last time. Would have to advance to be there at the wire in today's event.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - OUR CORNERSTONE - When you wager serious money you want a horse that is very dependable. This race horse fits the bill.

                  Thistledown - Race #7 - Post: 3:50pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $11,300 Class Rating: 42

                  Rating:

                  #5 LUNA PRIMAVERA (ML=3/1)
                  #1 POSITIVELY (ML=15/1)

LUNA PRIMAVERA - Atala has this filly placed in the right race. POSITIVELY - Gorham has an 'uncoupled' entry here. Best to beware the longer priced half.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #6 LIBERTALIA (ML=5/2), #3 OUR MAGIC PRINCESS (ML=7/2), #4 LIME TREE (ML=5/1),

LIBERTALIA - Can't play this runner in today's sprint of 6 furlongs. Hasn't even hit the board in a short distance race of late. Hard to keep following this sort of 'hanger' horse. OUR MAGIC PRINCESS - Didn't hit the board on March 21st at Gulfstream Park. Followed it up with another lackluster effort. This mount will probably need at least one more race after the lackluster showing following the long layoff. Pedestrian speed rating last time out at Gulfstream Park at 5 1/2 furlongs. Don't believe this less than sharp equine will improve too much today. LIME TREE - In this instance, this mount's inability to close ground in the last race is a cause for concern.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #5 LUNA PRIMAVERA to win if we can get at least 3/2 odds

                    # 4 RECKER POINT 4/1
I've got to go with FORT WARREN. Looks formidable for the conditions of this contest today, showing solid figures in dirt route races recently. UNDERHILL'S TAB - Put up a reliable Equibase Speed Figure in the last race. Can run another good one in this contest. Has to be given a shot against this group displaying competitive numbers lately and an average speed figure of 95 under similar conditions. RECKER POINT - Hartman has one of the top winning percentages in this field with entries running at this distance and surface. Hartman has shown excellent profits (+21 ROI ) at this distance/surface.
