Al Cimaglia: Hoosier Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

    July 26, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia

Hoosier Park has a 13-race card. The 0.50 Pick 4 starts in Race 10, and the sequence will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 10 (9:46 PM EST)

1-Backstreet Gambler (6-1)-Drops after putting in a good effort in the 2nd start in town. Comes back in sequence and gets a ++driver change in Trace Tetrick. Looking for a big try at a price and could get a pocket ride behind the program choice.
5-Smooth Baht A (7/5)-Comes off a big effort leaving from post 7, and landed on the point but couldn't hold on. Tetrick stuck with #1 the Tyler George entry as John DeLong takes a seat. Fits well at this class and is difficult to leave out but probably won't offer any value.

    Race 11 (10:09 PM EST)

3-Lets Go EndoFaera (3/5)-Team DeLong filly has won 8 of 14 lifetime and the race should go through this gal. Odds-on choice looks like the best on paper.
4-Flirtin Fanera (6-1)-Team Macomber pupil doesn't have the resume as the chalk but willing to use at this price. Could try to get the top and control the mile but could also roll hard down the lane.

    Race 12 (10:32 PM EST)

1-Jada Caroline (5-1)-Honest filly raced well in last and finished 1/2 length behind the morning line choice #4 Lyin Eyes. Has a chance to get a close-up seat off the gate and not work hard. Could be overlooked and with a sharp steer should be heard from at the wire.
6-Teelatini (9/2)-Went a quick opening half (.54.4) and was used hard from post 7 into a 26.3 opening quarter. That trip ended badly. But tonight, could be different and might offer a better price than 5/2. A short field should help, and this race could set up nicely for the versatile 3-year-old. Will fade the program chalk and look for a square price.

    Race 13 (10:55 PM EST)

2-Workin Ona Mystery (3-1)-The veteran is only making its 8th start of the year, so there have been some issues. Wouldn't want to take a short price with an 0-10 record at HoP. But did race well in last and should relish the company.
3-Fox Valley Landen (9/2)-Raced from the back and rallied nicely to come a close 4th but did miss a start. Comes back in sequence now and drops to the level of its last win on 6-7.
5-Bettor Than Spring (5-1)-Takes a good step-up and will use off the last start. Ohio shipper won his HoP debut in sparkling fashion going gate to wire in 150.4. That was the 1st win this year and could look better in the 2nd start in the George barn.

    $1.00 Late Pick 4

    1,5/3,4/1,6/2,3,5
    Total Bet=$24

Colonial Downs Pick 4 Friday, July 26

      July 26, 2024 | By Frank Carulli

      COLONIAL DOWNS, LATE PICK 4
      Friday, July 26, 2024

Favorites won the last three races in Colonial Downs’ Late Pick 4 last Friday, but with a 14-1 winner in the leadoff leg, a winning ticket returned $474 for 50-cents. Big fields with all races scheduled for the turf make for a more lucrative payoff this week.
CNL 6th race (7:10 p.m. EST) -- MASSIF, stakes-placed as a 2-year-old at this distance, should show his class as today’s solo play in the leadoff leg of the sequence. He capped his freshman season with three allowance placings, then met the likes of Grade 2-placed Fulmineo (3-10, $254k on turf) and Grade 3-placed Battle of Normandy, who duplicated his career-best 90 Beyer in a next-out 2X allowance victory. If the race comes off the turf or if MASSIF scratches, replace him with longshot SHARP TONES (#3).
CNL 7th race (7:42 p.m. EST) -- FIRST TO ARRIVE added blinkers and sprinted to a commanding lead in a 7F dirt sprint, only to get caught at 18-1 odds. Her dam, In My Time, finished first or second in 8 of 10 starts on the lawn going a route of ground. THY NAME IS WOMAN, wide throughout in her debut from post 10, lost some momentum into the turn and ran willingly until late stretch. HAIL NO gets a longshot spot on the ticket off a :35-1/5 workout from the gate. Her dam was 21/4-2-5 on turf, a $173k earner and Grade 3-placed.
CNL 8th race (8:12 p.m. EST) -- Monmouth Park invader WHO KNOWS heads the list of three entrants who arrive off runner-up finishes at the $16,000 level. STARRYSTARRYKNIGHT pressed the pace to the stretch on Gulfstream Park’s all-weather track in a race that produced two winners and a runner-up with Beyers speed figures of 82, 67 and 83, respectively. The class droppers include INCINERATOR, who makes his turf sprint debut off a series of fast recent works; BLEDSOE, who hails from the 26-percent turf sprint barn of trainer Wesley Ward; and ORANGE JUICE, who starts at his fifth grass venue in as many starts. It adds up to an ‘ALL’ punch in the Pick 4.
CNL 9th race (8:42 p.m. EST) -- TRES FRANCAIS won ridden out as the 1-to-5 favorite and can use her speed well in a repeat attempt, but she beat a dreadful field and offers no value to the Pick 4, so try to beat her. LA TACHE, on the other hand, is appealing at a better price if she can avoid another troubled start. She ‘had aim’ on the leaders in mid-stretch two starts back for a higher claiming price at this distance but lacked late kick. The race produced a winner and two runners-up who averaged a 63 Beyer, a speed figure good enough to win here. AWARD TOUR broke her maiden on Presque Isle Downs’ synthetic track and ran second last out, but she debuted on turf before she was claimed and rallied for second behind Princess Aleska (5/2-1-2 on turf), who went wire-to-wire in an allowance race last month. HURRICANE BON followed the 3-wide move of the winning favorite and finished second two starts back, then rallied from post 10 into second for the stretch run but flattened out.

      Suggested 50-Cent Ticket
      CNL 6th Race: 4
      CNL 7th Race: 3, 5, 8
      CNL 8th Race: ALL
      CNL 9th Race: 3, 5, 10
      Cost: $36

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Del Mar - Race #6
#7 Lahaina Flavor Late runner would benefit from an honest setup -- one I'm not totally sure he's going to get, but the price may still be right while keeping the turf rider who has been doing circles around the rest so far this season. I'm in at a midrange number.
#3 City Exile He's the one to beat with a handful of reliable starts on his page, and he's tactical enough to sit close early in a race without a ton of pace. Big jump on the top choice.
#6 Rimprotector He has done some decent work going long in graded-stakes company, and the class relief today might be enough to keep him in the frame.
Race Summary Lahaina Flavor might not have quite as high a ceiling as a few others in here, but I think he has a few deceptively good races on his page that might keep him in the mix at a decent price.
        Del Mar - Race #7
#5 Safa She really never runs a bad one, and she's got the right kind of positional pace to find a decent spot at this main-track trip. She has some tables to turn here, but she is going to offer at least a bit better number than she has in recent races.
#9 Pushiness High-upside filly just gave way late in the Los Al comeback, but she might have a tiny bit of upside off that run and has already stacked up well with this kind in the past.
#7 Grand Slam Smile Price won't be much, but no other real arguments from me here with reliable form and a few stakes blowouts on her page. Her fans might get a slightly more appealing number with Pushiness lined up?
Race Summary Safa would feel like a steal at anything like the 12/1 ML price, even if she has been beaten by some of these in the past. I think she gets the right trip in a race with a few pace types.
        Del Mar - Race #8
#10 Last Elizabethan She's a reach, but I'm not sure who you're supposed to be all that excited about in here, and she didn't have the cleanest go in a couple of the turf starts. Worth a flyer with a clean run.
#4 O K Rose She's one of the clear ones on the rise back into special weight company, but she previously found this level a little deep and has the kind of form that makes it easy to envision her settling for another piece. Obviously capable, but not really for me.
#1 Miz Clubcali There are a couple races on her page that seem to stack up well enough with these, and she could end up finding a cozy trip while on the inside throughout.
Race Summary Last Elizabethan might have something a bit better to show today now that she's in the middle of her campaign, and a cleaner run of things today might give her a chance at a big upset.

          Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

          Colonial Downs - Race #1
#7 LADY OPHELIA (6-1) Set solid pace, drifted outside on deep-closing faves to finish third.
#2 MINARI (8-1) Steady works for debut, dam hit board in 9 of 17 turf routes, mostly allowances.
#1 INDEPENDENCE WAY (2-1) Faded on lead in turf marathon, rallied too late as follow-up fave.
Race Summary LADY OPHELIA ‘went clear’ on the final turn but drifted at the top of the stretch and was passed by the two favorites in a longer grass route at Laurel Park. She got beat 5 lengths by $100k turf earner Krone in her prior start. Bet to win and place and play a 1-2-7 exacta box.
          Colonial Downs - Race #3
#3 NO CENTS NON CENTS (7-2) Disputed fast pace, troubled third in race that produced four winners.
#8 BEN’S HERO (3-1) Followed move of winning fave, who upset allowance foes next out.
#1 WOW WHATA PARTY (6-1) Gave way chasing 92-1 winner in first try for a tag, cuts back to sprint.
Race Summary NO CENTS NON CENTS broke inward and bumped a rival at the start, recovered to press a fast pace and held third despite not changing leads. The performance gets upgraded after four rivals she faced came back to win, two with 60-plus Beyer speed figures. Bet to win and place and play a 3,8/1,3,7,8/ALL trifecta.
          Colonial Downs - Race #4
#7 COBBLESONE BRIDGE (9-2) Takes magnified class drop for hot turf barn, today’s Best Bet.
#12 REGGIESSCOTCHNSODA (15-1) Good speed, good price for 18-percent second-out barn.
#1 BLAME THE CLOUDS (5-2) Lacked room on turn, led late, just missed with blinkers on.
Race Summary COBBLESTONE BRIDGE, third in MSW company at Tampa Bay Downs, was shuffled and steadied in a triple ‘key’ MSW turf route two starts ago at Pimlico. He takes the class plunge for trainer Michael Stidham, who won with 3 of his last 7 grass runners this month. He’s too good to pass up at 9-2 on the morning line, so bet to win and place and play 7/1,2,12/1,2,4,5,9,12 trifecta.

                Prairie Meadows - Race #5 - Post: 7:42pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $23,800 Class Rating: 86

                Rating:

                #3 ADRIA (ML=2/1)
                #2 SWEET LAURA (ML=7/2)
                #1 GOLD STRATEGY (ML=3/1)

ADRIA - A thoroughbred coming back this promptly after a sharp effort is a good sign. Have to like the early speed on this one. No one else may even be close. Horse has improved at least 2 speed figure points in last 2 races. I look for that trend to continue right here in this race. SWEET LAURA - This rider and trainer have a favorable ROI when they are put together. Look two races back where the horse finished first. You can excuse the last contest where she bounced a bit. I see a return to form today. GOLD STRATEGY - A campaigner coming back this quickly after a good contest is a good omen. This animal earns a lot of money per race around the track. I believe she can increase that bankroll in this event.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #4 UNDECODED (ML=4/1), #6 BLESSED ANNA (ML=6/1), #5 GP'S AMAZING GRACE (ML=8/1),

UNDECODED - Recorded a common speed fig last time out in a non-classified race race on June 30th. Doubtful to see an improved performance off of that number. BLESSED ANNA - This thoroughbred likes to hit the board, but doesn't usually finish on top. Leave out of the top spot. This mare earned a speed figure in her last clash which likely isn't good enough in today's event. GP'S AMAZING GRACE - Not probable that the fig she registered on Jun 15th will hold up in this affair.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Put your money on #3 ADRIA on the nose if you can get odds of 5/2 or more

JESS RITE looks to be a very good contender especially at 10/1. Should best this group of horses here, showing solid figures of late. The winning percentage shown by horses entered by Johnson running at this distance are the best in this group of horses in this race. With a very strong 90 speed figure last time out, will definitely be a factor in this contest. OPEN JESSIES CORONA - Have to believe this racer will run well again today. Displays solid speed figures on average overall when put alongside the rest of this field. EYE WILL DECIDE - One of the most competitive win percentages between this jockey and trainer make this gelding dangerous. Has posted solid speed figures in longer quarter horse races in the past.

                    Sacramento - Race #6 - Post: 7:58pm - Maiden Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $11,500 Class Rating: 70

                    Rating:

                    #6 CONEJO MALO (ML=2/1)
                    #3 THIRSTY LOV (ML=3/1)
                    #1 FRANK THE CAT (ML=4/1)

CONEJO MALO - This campaigner coming off a solid contest in the last 30 days is a contender in my opinion. You have to like that last race fig, 66, which is the highest most recent race speed rating of this field. THIRSTY LOV - Earnings per race entered is something that I believe can be an important handicapping aspect. This mount is ranked numero uno in this field. FRANK THE CAT - Last time, was entered in a race at Golden Gate Fields. Finished fourth, but had a decent chunk of the win pool. Could be dangerous right here.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #7 BEAR ENCOUNTER (ML=6/1), #5 KLIMT A. P. (ML=8/1),

BEAR ENCOUNTER - Unlikely for this thoroughbred to make a winning move with no success lately in a sprint event. This gelding recorded a speed figure in his last race which likely isn't good enough in today's race. KLIMT A. P. - Not probable for this participant to do much running with no success lately in a short distance race.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #6 CONEJO MALO is the play if we get odds of 5/2 or better

                      RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                      # 4 B C CHU CHU 6/1
                      # 2 WIRLY GIRLY 9/5
                      # 3 LOLA M 8/5
My pick for this race is B C CHU CHU. With Boodramsingh getting the mount, watch out for this racer. Boodramsingh should be able to get this filly to break out early for this race. Had one of the best Equibase Speed Figures of this group of animals in her last outing. WIRLY GIRLY - Had one of the best Equibase Speed Figures of this group in her last outing. She has been running admirably and the Speed Figures are among the top in this group of horses in this race. LOLA M - She must be given a chance given the quite good speed numbers. The average Equibase class rating alone makes this horse a definite contender.
