Friday 8/9/24 Free Plays / Trends / Betting Info / Etc
Two hot offenses square off tonight against two gas can starting pitchers. The Reds have scored a total of 32 runs in their last four games for an average of 8.0 runs per game. The Brewers have scored a total of 49 runs in their last six games for an average of 8.2 runs per game.
Carson Spiers is 4-3 with a 3.59 ERA in seven starts and five relief appearances for the Reds this season. Spiers has allowed 10 earned runs and 6 homers in 20 1/3 innings in his last four starts coming in.
Aaron Civale is one of the most overrated starters in baseball. He is 2-8 with a 5.14 ERA and 1.41 WHIP in 22 starts between the Rays and Brewers this season. Civale has allowed 15 earned runs and 6 homers in 25 innings in his last five starts coming in. Bet the OVER in this game Friday.
I'm betting Cleveland +120 on the money line in Friday's series opener at the Twins. This just feels like a get right spot for the Guardians, who have lost 5 in a row and saw their lead in the AL Central drop to 3.5. Cleveland will have Alex Cobb on the mound. He's making his season debut. He's a vet and has pitched well in rehab. Minnesota will have Louie Varland on the mound. He's got a 24.4% line drive percentage on balls in play. The worst of any starter going today. You also have to take into account how the Guardians have owned this series of late. Cleveland has won 8 of the last 10 meetings. Give me the Guardians +120!
Cleveland @ Minnesota (8:10 PM EST) (Game 2)
Play On: Cleveland +120 (Cobb/Varland) Listed
The Cleveland Guardians take on the Twins in Minnesota in Game Two of a doubleheader on Friday night. Cleveland is 67-47 overall this year while Minnesota comes in with a 63-50 overall record on the season. Louie Varland is 0-4 with a 6.58 ERA overall this year. Cleveland is 6-3 last 9 games against the American League. Cleveland is 4-1 last 5 games against AL Central division opponents. Cleveland is 21-7 last 28 games overall in this series, 10-3 last 13 and 6-0 past 6 against Minnesota. We'll recommend a small play on Cleveland in Game 2 tonight! Thanks and good luck, Rocky
This is a play on the CHICAGO WHITE SOX+126 for our Friday Free Play. The White Sox were able to snap their 21-game losing streak with a 5-1 win over Oakland on Tuesday but lost the series finale and they finally made a managerial move. They fired manager Pedro Grifol and promoted Grady Sizemore as interim manager and this could provide at least a little spark on one of the worst teams in MLB history. There is not much else good to say but we are getting value with the pitching matchup where a quarter of their wins have come from. The Cubs took two of three against Minnesota and have won six of their last eight games to move to within five games in the National League Wild Card but it still may be too much with four teams ahead of them also trying to get in. The offense has been pretty good since the break on the top line but they still are ranked in the bottom half of the league in most metric categories. Since the All Star Break, they have an 89 RC+ which is No. 23. Garrett Crochet had a few bad starts in April but he has been one of the very few bright spots as he has allowed three runs or less in 17 consecutive starts including two runs or less in 15 of those. He is back home where he has been great with a 2.60 ERA and 0.95 WHIP with eight of the 13 starts coming against teams in current playoff positions. The Cubs have struggled against left-handed pitching this season as they have a .692 OPS which is No. 22 with their 22 home runs being the sixth fewest in the league. Chicago is just 8-14 against left-handed starters. Jameson Taillon bounced back from an awful start against the Reds as he allowed one run in six innings against the Cardinals. Overall, his numbers are solid with a 3.25 ERA but it goes to 3.79 in xERA and on the road, he has a 4.08 ERA. He is facing the worst offense in baseball but changes could made with the new skipper in charge. Play (928) Chicago White Sox
Friday MLB Free play. My selection is on Colorado+152 over Atlanta at 8:40 pm et on Friday.
Not sure the Braves are deserving of the lofty price tag here as they hand the ball to Grant Holmes against Tanner Gordon in a matchup of unproven big league starters.
Holmes has made just two starts for Atlanta. He didn't pitch all that poorly in either game but the Braves lost on both occasions. I just don't like the spot here as he starts on the road at hitter-friendly Coors Field.
Gordon got lit up in his first few big league starts for the Rockies but settled down and allowed just one earned run over six innings against the Padres, on the road no less, last time out. The Braves have struggled at the plate lately, ranking 20th in the majors in weighted on base average over the last seven days. Take Colorado.
I get why people favor the over. Last night's game went over and both teams are strong offensively. I think the pitching shows up today. Let's cash some tickets!
