Al Cimaglia: Pocono Sun Stakes Saturday Late Pick 4 Analysis

    August 17, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
It's Sun Stakes Saturday at Pocono Downs and top 3-year-olds will be featured throughout the 14-race card. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 10. The sequence has a $15,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Don't forget to register for the Cash Back Promo today at Pocono and Charlottetown.

    Race 10 (5:39 PM EST)

1-Sweet Gal (6-1)-This is the stablemate of the program chalk #2 Rocket Deo. The Brett Pelling pupil may not be as talented, but her recent form has been solid while being burdened with bad post draws. Comes off a nice win at the Meadows and was used a couple of times. Will look for a big try at a solid price.
2-Rocket Deo (5/2)-Winner of 7 races in 9 starts this year is as good as advertised and knows how to take pictures on smaller ovals. Has a perfect 3 for 3 record at PcD but this will be her 4th race in 22 days, otherwise it is hard to find a flaw.
3-Odds On Platinum (4-1)-There are a lot of nice fillies in this race and Ian Moore's pupil is no exception. Northern invader is also sharp as a tack and could offer some value if takes to the oval in its 1st Pocono appearance.

    Race 11 (6:00 PM EST)

2-Elista Hanover (5/2)-Comes off a dud in the Hambo Oakes but according to trainer Anne Stoebe she came out of the race being sick. That happens and had been so good all year will need to use. Should be better than an odds-on tonight.
3-French Champagne (9/2)-Suffered an interference break and willing to toss the last start on a sloppy track. Should be good on the 5/8's, this post draw works and will be forwardly placed. Dexter Dunn will be in the bike and that should help. But still needs a top effort to beat this crew and might be over bet.
8-Warrawee Michelle (3-1)-Came off the bench with some issues but the last 2 starts indicate the Ake Svanstedt pupil is rounding into form. This is a tough group, the post will make it a challenge for sure. But should be a solid price, did win its last start, and the Walner filly banked over $178,000 in 2023.

    Race 12 (6:21 PM EST)

3-Gem Quality (8-1)-Will look for a price just in case the morning line choice gets a very bumpy ride. Yannick Gingras has gate speed to use and the Chris Ryder trainee only 2 wins this year were at Pocono. Should be a big price and could be a trip out candidate.
7-Legendary Hanover (2-1)-Winner of 3 straight has banked over $550,000 this year and now tries a smaller oval. James MacDonald will do the steering, and will trust the connections, there won't be an issue with this surface. With a fair trip the Tony Beaton colt should be tough to beat.

    Race 13 (6:42 PM EST)

2-Amazing Catch (4-1)-Raced gamely in the Hambo to finish 3rd at 41-1 in the slop. Could be waking up and hopefully won't be bet hard. Did win its only race at PcD and can stalk and roll hard late. Using and will fade the 5/2 program chalk #5 T C I.
5-Security Protected (6-1)-Scott Zeron took the lines here on August 9, drew off by over 6 lengths to win and now faces a tougher test. Likes to win, capturing 8 of 20 races. Could double up if Zeron can provide a smooth steer and the Marcus Melander pupil minds it manners.
6-Situationship (9/2)-Was used hard into a 26.3 opening quarter leaving from post 10 in the Hambo Elim. That trip ended poorly and has been off since. Could be overlooked at the windows and does have the gate speed to get a very good seat when the wings fold. Best to respect the team Svanstedt trainee.

    0.50 Late Pick 4

    1,2,3/2,3,8/3,7/2,5,6
    Total Bet=$27

Race of the Week: $1 Million King's Plate from Woodbine

      August 14, 2024 | By Jeremy Plonk

      The Lead:
North America's oldest race since 1860 -- and Canada's most important -- returns Saturday at Woodbine when the $1 million King's Plate tops a 13-race card that boasts 4 supporting stakes. The mile and one-quarter King's Plate is the Kentucky Derby of sorts for those 3-year-olds foaled in Canada. It goes as Race 11 on the program. The 13 runners consist of 4 from trainer Kevin Attard and 3 via Mark Casse, the barns who've accounted for the past 2 winners of the Plate.

      Field Depth:
Grade 3 winner ESSEX SERPENT and Grade 1-placed MY BOY PRINCE are the class of the field, which ranges widely and includes 3 maidens.

      Pace:
FRIENDLY GHOST made the front in the Plate Trial while moving sprint-to-route and should be forward again; that same sprint-to-route move could put ROAR OF THE CROWD on the engine Saturday. MY BOY PRINCE figures to get a pressing trip in a large field that really doesn't show much other early interest. This race is advantaged to those near the front.

      Our Eyes:
      Here are my horse-by-horse notes.

#1-JOKESTAR: First of 4 Kevin Attard trainees, the Plate Trial fifth-place finish has won just 1 of 8 starts. Flat late at shorter trips and pedigree / style don't suggest 10 furlongs will be beneficial. Jockey Emma-Jayne Wilson won the 2007 Plate.

#2-RAFAROO: Most lightly raced entrant in the field makes his third lifetime start, while still a maiden, but was second in the Plate Trial at 26-1 odds and showed he belonged. Damsire Pleasantly Perfect was a Breeders' Cup Classic winner at the mile and one-quarter trip and there's plenty of ceiling here to improve.

#3-ESSEX SERPENT: Trainer Mark Casse is a 3-time Plate winner, as is jockey Patrick Husbands, and they teamed twice to score this race with Lexie Lou in 2014 and Paramount Prince a year ago. Raced nearly the front throughout in winning the Grade 3 Marine against open company last out, but has pedigree to stay if he can negotiate 8 additional pounds from his last start. Prefer stablemate MY BOY PRINCE, and there's no value in having those run 1-2, so will try to get him out of the ticket.

#4-CAITLINHERGRTNESS: Fillies have captured the late 4 times in the last 10 years, so the Woodbine Oaks runner-up should be respected. Trainer Kevin Attard won this with the filly Moira 2 years ago when teamed with Rafael Hernandez, who seeks a third Plate victory. Filly's last 2 at Woodbine indicate the distance is within reach and she gets a 5-pound weight allowance that helps vs. the boys.

#5-MIDNIGHT MASCOT: Got a solid pace when closing 9 lengths in the Grade 3 Marine for third, but picks up 8 pounds and doesn't project as a 10F type on past races and pedigree. Should be closer to the pace this time and may not have effective late kick for Casse.

#6-FRIENDLY GHOST: Front-running Plate Trial third-place finisher adds another 220 yards to the test after getting away with very easy fractions. Doesn't appear to need the lead, and this improving Outwork gelding has trained well since with room to improve.

#7-MY BOY PRINCE: Morning line favorite could give Mark Casse a fourth King's Plate winner and second straight. He pulled clear late to win the Plate Trial and fired a bullet half-mile local work in his only move since then. His pedigree does not scream mile and one-quarter, the mild concern, but his 6: 5-1-0 Woodbine record and strong third in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf last year are marks the others just can't match. Strictly the one to beat and should get a cozy trip.

#8-PIERRE: Late-running allowance performer steps up in class and picks up 7 pounds while making his first stakes bid. But the Tapiture colt for Kevin Attard has raced not only in open company in all 4 races, but against older horses in his last 2 starts. Love the damside route pedigree and this arguably is not the rise in class some think it is.

#9-THOR'S CAUSE: Eight-race maiden was never a threat in last year's Coronation Futurity when last against Canadian foals and remains tough to recommend.

#10-BEDARD: Kevin Attard's 6-race maiden has been in open company exclusively and exits 3 straigth runner-up finishes, the past 2 as favorite. Son of Nyquist should handle the distance on pedigree, but has been flat late in his running lines and picks up 8 pounds.

#11-ROAR OF THE CROWD: Sprinter in all 4 starts makes a wild leap in distance, adding 3-1/2 furlongs off his previous long. He'll also pick up a whopping 12 pounds from his allowance third August 1, wheeling back in 16 days. Factors early, likely not late.

#12-NO MORE OPTIONS: Blinkers come off the 2023 Frost King Stakes winner, who has a turf allowance win amongst 5 starts since then. Never like to see equipment changes in main-event kind of races; that's what the preps are for. Decent sort gets '20 Plate winner Daisuke Fukomoto in the irons, but prefer others.

#13-VITALITY: It took this Street Boss gelding 7 starts to break his maiden, finally doing so July 19 when adding Lasix for the first time. Gets to run on Lasix again Saturday, but picks up 8 pounds while having to overcome a wide draw. Closing style and long run to the clubhouse turn likely negate the latter concern, but others appear better.

      Most Certain Exotics Contender:
Favorite MY BOY PRINCE is 8-8 in the exacta at Woodbine on either surface and gets a great trip set-up.

      Best Longshot Exotics Contender:
At 20-1 in the morning line, PIERRE leaves open-company older horses as a dangerous threat for power barn Kevin Attard.

      Sending it in ($100 bankroll):
$60 exacta MY BOY PRINCE with PIERRE. $20 exacta MY BOY PRINCE with RAFAROO and CAITLINHERGRTNESS ($40).

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Ellis Park - Race #4
#2 Mizmalice Take a look at her ahead of this, as she's one of a few interesting firsters who could make some noise right out of the box in a spot where there isn't a whole lot to note on paper so far. One of the ones?
#5 Broadway Lights Debuter has been working regularly for this one, and she goes for a high-powered team that is very capable with this kind -- but that's no secret, and the price will surely reflect it.
#11 Sweet Star Not much from her in the debut, but she strikes me as the type who might have some room to come forward today with that race under her belt, and the price should be huge again.
Race Summary Mizmalice looks interesting enough on paper in a spot where those who have run haven't shown much at all. Looking for a fresh face today while trying to sneak Sweet Star in the frame at a massive number.
        Ellis Park - Race #5
#5 Financial Whiz Took a spin with him last time out when he showed little at 33/1, but he flashed a little chasing pace back in June and might wake up a bit here while getting into this easier spot. Willing to give him another chance.
#9 Sunny Magic He makes some sense while returning in another logical spot, but I'm not totally sold that he's got a bunch of upside today at what is probably going to be a modest kind of price.
#3 Shan Not sure anyone expected much of him in the debut, because this kind gets bet off the board when they're live at first asking for this team, not typically sent off at 31/1. Chasing pace from the debut might translate better with this cheaper group.
Race Summary Financial Whiz absolutely did not run to my plans last time out, but I wonder if the slight cutback and class relief will give him a chance to show something better at a decent price.
        Ellis Park - Race #8
#7 Playback She's got pretty reliable form that might put her on the scene late after spying the speed. Think she's in the right spot the entire way today with a chance to win right back on the rise.
#8 She Called Tough call for me with some form that looks imposing at first glance, but she's stretching out with a big question mark around her ability to finish a race with enthusiasm. The more leisurely route pace could help her cause, but I have some hesitation at what I figure is an unappealing price.
#1 Blue Dream Machine She's back fresh after biting off a tough piece in Grade II company after the debut win, and this is obviously a much more reasonable spot for her to find her bearings again. Wouldn't surprise.
Race Summary Playback steps up off the graduation run, and she might find herself in another great spot to take over and get the jump on the deeper finishing threats.

          Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

          Gulfstream Park - Race #1
#7 MRS. CLEAN (7-2) David-trained firster showing good signs in the morning.
#1 LIGHT THE TORCH (6-1) Pressed fast pace and tired in MSW race in which closers fared well.
#10 DIGITAL SALE (5-2) Far back in heavily-bet MSW debut, adds blinkers.
Race Summary MRS. CLEAN shows a couple solid gate works at Palm Meadows and hails from a barn that wins at 20-plus percent with 2-year-olds and first-time starters. Her sire’s offspring are 7-for-35 in their inaugural campaign. Bet to win and place and play a 1-7-10 exacta box.
          Gulfstream Park - Race #2
#1 FLASHOVER (9-2) Good try as gelding for new barn, can move forward in second try off layoff.
#6 MACKOR (8-1) Pressed fast pace on ‘off’ track at Tampa, gets Lasix for red-hot barn.
#5 BLUE SPEARMAN (2-1) Set pace in turf route, drops, switches surfaces and adds blinkers today.
Race Summary FLASHOVER improved for his new connections off a four-month layoff. He was sandwiched at the start and recovered to race evenly behind the odds-on winner. He lures Jaramillo, who is on a 8-for-24 run riding for this barn. Bet to win and place and play a 1-5-6 exacta box.
          Gulfstream Park - Race #3
#2 DOWN IN THE BAYOU (6-1) Followed same wide path as winner, in top form for new connections.
#5 SHE’S SO SEXY (9-2) Shook duel and drew away in 12-horse field, takes class hike for Joseph.
#4 HUB CITY (4-1) Won in five-horse field but looked good doing it for 32-percent ‘repeat’ barn.
Race Summary DOWN IN THE BAYOU angled to the 6-path at the eighth pole but couldn’t reach the drifting favorite at 5F. She broke her maiden through disqualification in the race prior, but should be in contention again off the claim. Bet to win and place.

ANGEL'S MAGIC looks quite good to best this group of horses in this race and is a very good value-based wager given the 8/1 line. Has been running admirably lately and should be up on the lead early on. He has garnered very strong figs under today's conditions and will almost certainly fare well against this group. MISTER MULDOON - Looks strong against this group and ought to be one of the leaders. Has to be given consideration based on the competitive Equibase speed fig put up in the last contest.

                  # 2 BP CARTEL POLICY 6/5
                  # 4 BEDUINOS FAVORITE 12/1
I give the nod to ROCKIN WITH ENERGY here. Looks competitive to be on the front end at the first call. Must be given a chance in this event if only for the formidable Equibase Speed Figure earned in the last outing. The average class rating alone makes this one a contender. BP CARTEL POLICY - This entrant has been constatntly racing well recently. Could provide positive dividends based on very good recent speed figs with an average of 82. BEDUINOS FAVORITE - Nunez and Ramirez have a good win percentage together.

                    Prairie Meadows - Race #10 - Post: 9:51pm - Maiden Special - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $44,540 Class Rating: 63

                    Rating:

                    #3 FIVE WON FIVE (ML=2/1)
                    #5 PREACHER MAN SAM (ML=3/1)

FIVE WON FIVE - Sophisticated horseplayers will tell you that this animal has strong early speed. The last speed figure of 57 is the highest last race figure in the bunch. PREACHER MAN SAM - That last outing must not have been too hard on this gelding for him to be able to race again so quickly.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #6 SAVOYA RETURN (ML=7/2), #2 GO GORM GO (ML=5/1), #7 GETTISTOWN (ML=6/1),

SAVOYA RETURN - This vulnerable equine gave a less than rousing performance last time out finishing fourth. Don't see any chance of any change in today's race. GO GORM GO - Just don't think he is worth the risk at the expected odds. GETTISTOWN - Don't think this racer has what it takes to be victorious this time.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - FIVE WON FIVE - I like to check out the TrackMaster Platinum PPs to look for the top horse in earnings per start. This magnificent animal looks good to me so I'm making a prime bet on him.

                      Charles Town - Race #5 - Post: 9:02pm - Claiming - 6.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $13,700 Class Rating: 84

                      Rating:

                      #7 MASAI MAN (ML=8/1)
                      #6 PERFECT SILENT CAT (ML=7/2)
                      #8 AUBURN MILL (ML=4/1)
                      #2 BONNIE BILL (ML=6/1)

MASAI MAN - This gelding was sharp enough to post a 'top two' workout recently. I think he's ready for today's event. On board this entrant on Jul 26th and Chilo is back again in the irons this time. This jockey/conditioner duo has been producing a very profitable ROI, right at +175. PERFECT SILENT CAT - This horse seems to run pretty good after a layoff. I like a thoroughbred that manages to be there at the wire as often as this horse. Almost always in the money so don't leave him out of your exotic bets. The most recent fig of 76 is the top last race speed rating in the group. Another way to evaluate class is earnings per start. This racer has the highest in the field. I think he'll be close at the finish. AUBURN MILL - Multiple wins in this horse's life, all at Charles Town. Could add another win in this event. Carrying 7 pounds less this race. Trainer has him in a good spot. BONNIE BILL - This thoroughbred coming off a sharp race in the last month or so is a solid contender in my book.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #4 EKATI'S VERVE (ML=5/2), #3 MR. MOX (ML=5/1),

EKATI'S VERVE - I find it hard to wager on any runner in a short distance affair if he hasn't finished in the money in a sprint in the last two months. MR. MOX - The effort in the last race on July 5th probably won't hold up against stronger competition when they turn for home.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #7 MASAI MAN to win if you can get at least 4/1 odds
