Jeremy Plonk: 17 Saturday Stakes in 17 Sentences

    August 22, 2024 | By Jeremy Plonk

Hop in the express lane for this trip across America, where 17 stakes races will held on Saturday.

    Here goes (in chronological order)!

    1. Parx 3, 1:40 pm ET | Rail-drawn 1-Buccherino has been facing tougher than he’ll face in the Salvatore Debunda Sprint and has the home-court edge on unbeaten likely chalk 6-Sunny Breeze.

    2. Parx 4, 2:10 pm ET | While 7-Grooms All Bizness has won 4 of his last 5, it’s local Turf Monster winner 5-That’s Right to beat in the Parx Dash under turf sprint ace rider Paco Lopez.

    3. Parx 6, 3:15 pm ET | 4-Tuskegee Airmen looked like a future star in 2022 at 2 and respected Parx trainer John Servis goes old school – sprint-to-route while second off the layoff – in the Mayor’s Mile.

    4. Saratoga 9, 3:44 pm ET | It’s literally a Charlie Appleby coin-flip in the Sword Dancer, where the 12-furlong trip may suit 4-Silver Knott over stablemate 2-Measured Time.

    5. Parx 7, 3:45 pm ET | 5-Recruiter was eye-catching early in his career and his allowance win recently at Monmouth looks like he’s back on the beam for a stakes re-rise into the State Representative’s Sprint.

    6. Timonium 8, 4:02 pm ET | The 6-furlong oval at the Maryland State Fair was a haven last year for jockey Xavier Perez (2-Yesternight), while big respect for the bullring Charles Town Oaks effort last year from 8-Late Frost takes top choice.

    7. Parx 8, 4:15 pm ET | 6-Impel and 1-Gun Song have faced tougher, but the Cathryn Sophia is a prep for the Grade 1 Cotillion and 7-Just Be Quiet will offer value in a race that looks like a destination for her and not a tune-up.

    8. Saratoga 10, 4:20 pm ET | The Ballerina could incinerate with need-the-lead 4-Society and 8-Munny’s Gold dueling, setting the table for my longshot best bet of the day 2-Chi Town Lady, who boasts ridiculous BRIS late pace figures.

    9. Monmouth 9, 4:37 pm ET | Juveniles stretching out for the first time are about projection, and Monmouth’s 1-mile Sorority may better-suit the pedigree and style of 1-Vino Limone than likely heavy favorite 7-Social Fortress, whose mama sprinted.

    10. Parx 9, 4:45 pm ET | The Smarty Jones Is the local Pennsylvania Derby prep, where 3-Gould’s Gold should secure a comfy trip near a very modest pace and get the jump on 4-Uncle Heavy, 1-Mugatu et al.

    11. Saratoga 11, 4:55 pm ET | The Forego pace looks manageable for a 7-furlong Grade 1, which is good news for red-hot 6-Mullikin to notch his fourth straight win.

    12. Saratoga 12, 5:30 pm ET | So many good options in the 7-furlong Jerkens Memorial, but medium-priced 1-World Record removes a lot of the variables with rail speed and a fantastic win sprinting over the track since adding blinkers.

    13. Saratoga 13, 6:10 pm ET | Absolutely no confidence in the Travers, where 5 of the 8 are win contenders (all but 4,5,6) so I’d only get involved in the win pool if an outlier price looked too juicy to pass on a key contender.

    14. Gulfstream 10, 6:33 pm ET | 6-Comedy Town beat better in the Smile Sprint last out and should make it 3 in a row in the Benny the Bull over a furlong farther, given his new-found ability to stalk.

    15. Del Mar 9, 9:00 pm ET | The Pat O'Brien figures to be an encore for the unstoppable 6-The Chosen Vron, who was as good as he's ever looked in winning last month's Bing Crosby.

    16. Prairie Meadows 9, 10:26 pm ET | 7-Long Neck Paula and 5-Aoraki exit Saratoga’s Schuylerville for A-list trainers Wesley Ward and Steve Asmussen, while the early foot of the latter should play stronger in the Prairie Meadows Freshman over a speed-friendly track.

    17. FD Racing 6, 10:50 pm ET | 2-EJ Won the Cup should absolutely outclass the St. Louis Derby competition and the 2-1 morning line projection would be a late-night snack.

Race of the Week: G1 Jerkens at Saratoga | Saturday

      August 21, 2024 | By Jeremy Plonk

      The Lead:
Travers Day at Saratoga includes a stacked undercard of stakes, none more appealing than the big field of 3-year-old sprinters in the Race 12 Jerkens Memorial. Strong options abound and that's what horseplayers are looking for in a great betting race. The supporting races also include the Grade 1 Ballerina, Sword Dancer and Forego.

      Field Depth:
BOOK 'EM DANNO is a Grade 1 winner this year, while PRINCE OF MONACO and TIMBERLAKE reached Grade 1-winning status a season ago. WORLD RECORD is a Grade 2 winner, while DOMESTIC PRODUCT is a multiple Grade 3 winner. The class edge lies with these among the 11, but there's not a wide gap between any of them listed.

      Pace:
For a Grade 1 sprint at 7 furlongs, there's a surprisingly light amount of committed front-running speed. WORLD RECORD should go from the rail with OTTO THE CONQUEROR and LITTLE NI perhaps in closest pursuit. There's some edge to being forwardly placed the way this sets up on paper.

      Our Eyes:
      Here are my horse-by-horse notes.

#1-WORLD RECORD: Rail speedster exits a career-best effort in winning the local prep, the Grade 2 Amsterdam, with the addition of blinkers. Threat to do it again with Luis Saez taking over for Flavien Prat, who rode 4 of these contenders last out and opts for Domestic Product. Rail draw has been a positive for this one whose handled it before multiple times.

#2-SPEAK EASY: Unbeaten Constitution colt looks for 3 in a row and could give Irad Ortiz Jr. back-to-back wins in the Jerkens, piloting upset winner One In Vermillion a year ago as the longest shot on the board at 19-1. Ortiz teamed with Todd Pletcher to win the 2013 Jerkens with Capo Bastone. Solid win over the track helps, but several in here have shown positive local form.

#3-DOMESTIC PRODUCT: Son of 2017 Jerkens winner Practical Joke exits easily the best race of his career in a blowout Grade 3 Dwyer win at Aqueduct. That was his first 1-turn race since a dull debut at the Spa last summer over 6 furlongs. The Chad Brown trainee has something to prove in local form, but Flavien Prat has ridden an amazing 11 stakes winners at the current meet and opts for this horse over 3 others he rode last time out.

#4-VETTRIANO: New York-bred makes huge class leap after maiden and allowance scores vs. state-breds for trainer Brad Cox. Both wins came at Aqueduct and this one was beaten favorite in his only Saratoga try last summer in a maiden debut. Tough task.

#5-PRINCE OF MONACO: Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity winner and Grade 1 Woody Stephens runner-up looks to have carried his juvenile for over to age 3 based on that lone sophomore start. Disastrous start in the Woody Stephens over this track and distance before a furious rally came up a half-length short to Book 'Em Danno. Favored that day and likely will be again for 4-time Jerkens winner John Velazquez (tied with Mike Smith for most wins all-time in this race). This is another last-out Prat mount looking for a new partner. Bob Baffert won the 2016 Jerkens with Drefong, while sire Speightstown was responsible for 2020 winner Echo Town.

#6-TIMBERLAKE: Last year's Grade 1 Champagne winner has gone 1-for-4 since, winning Oaklawn's Grade 2 Rebel. Tried to make him a 2-turn horse for the Triple Crown, but turns back in trip after a Haskell third-place finish routing. Brad Cox returns to jockey Florent Geroux, who rode Timberlake to a pair of wins last year, after recent rider Flavien Prat jumped saddles to Domestic Product. Son of Into Mischief, who similarly sired Jerkens winner Practical Joke to a score here in 2017 after unsuccessfully trying to become a Triple Crown horse.

#7-OTTO THE CONQUEROR: Trainer Steve Asmussen won this race in 2020 (Echo Town) and 2021 (Jackie's Warrior), but this listed Springboard Mile winner has struggled to keep up in a pair of graded stakes bids so far. Should be up on the pace as far as he can press the issue.

#8-BOOK 'EM DANNO: Grade 1 Woody Stephens winner has an unimpeachable 8: 6-2-0 record and wants to beat you with a relentless stretch run. Trainer Derek Ryan was bold traveling to Saudi Arabia this year for its Derby and that head defeat looked even better after Forever Young later finished 2 noses short of winning the Kentucky Derby. Monmouth-based colt has a win over the track and distance, but loses jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. to Speak Easy and winds up with Javier Castellano for the first time.

#9-REYNOLDS CHANNEL: Sixth-start maiden breaker takes a massive leap in class for trainer Bill Mott, who won the Jerkens back in 1991 with Take Me Out when the race was called the King's Bishop. Difficult to see this one contesting for the big prize. Jockey Joel Rosario is a 2-time Jerkens winner in 2017 and 2021.

#10-JEFFERSON STREET: More fancied of the Bill Mott uncoupled entrants, this Grade 2 Amsterdam runner-up was an eye-catching Saratoga allowance winner during the Belmont Stakes Festival. Regular pilot Junior Alvarado returns on the son of Travers winner Street Sense.

#11-LITTLE NI: Had his perfect record narrowly thwarted by Book 'Em Danno in the Jersey Shore Stakes last time after 3 daylight wins. Expect early pace from this one on the outside under Jose Ortiz, who piloted Jack Christopher to victory in the '22 Jerkens. Mark Casse barn has taken over the training with a couple of local works.

      Most Certain Exotics Contender:
Hard to argue against 8-8 in the exacta for BOOK 'EM DANNO.

      Best Longshot Exotics Contender:
Give me WORLD RECORD at 8-1 morning line all day.

      Sending it in ($100 bankroll):
$76 win WORLD RECORD. $2 trifecta part-wheel WORLD RECORD with DOMESTIC PRODUCT, TIMBERLAKE with DOMESTIC PRODUCT, TIMBERLAKE, BOOK 'EM DANNO, SPEAK EASY, PRINCE OF MONACO, JEFFERSON STREET, LITTLE NI ($24).

Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

        August 24, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia

        XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Northfield Park has a 16-race card featuring Ohio Sires Stakes action. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool with a 14% takeout, and it will be my focus.

        Race 11 (9:40 PM EST)

1-Rose Run Zane (5/2)-Took the long way around in the Millstein and now lands in a more winnable spot. Likes to race at the top of the stack and that should be where Austin Hanners is sitting. The morning line chalk could be a sharp steer away from a picture.
4-Janelle Granny (7/2)-Like the one above Granny can make some noise versus this field. Has faced some tough customers and often hurts its own chances by starting too slow. If Nick Clegg gets away from the gate in good shape the team Clegg 3-year-old should be in the hunt at the wire.
6-Clever Cody (5-1)-Recent form has been dull but the Ian Moore pupil has been facing some tough foes. Aaron Merriman should have the pedal down and could land on the point or in the pocket. Either trip could work and it's doubtful the morning line odds hold up.

        Race 12

1-Santa Fe Kat (8-1)-Willing to toss the last start from the 8-hole, the time before versus better and didn't do much in a Fair race. Tonight, draws the rail in a class that should fit, the program chalk starts in the 2nd tier and the price should be right to use.
5-No Soup Tonight (4-1)-This is the 2nd start for the Kreiser barn and its debut could not have ended much worse. Finished 31 lengths behind the winner and went off as the chalk. This is an on and off sort and will take a swing because this could be "on" time, won't be even money tonight and fits with this crew.
9-Hill Of A Night (9/5)-Drew off versus the $8k claimers and went off at 3-1. Raced a big mile in last and might do so again but this price is tough to swallow. The Looney barn has been clicking and could double up but will need a sharp steer.

        Race 13 (10:24 PM EST)

7-Be My Rose N (7/2)-Seems to not get the best draws but does grind its way around and has had seconditis. May have met a beatable field and Wrenn can find a good seat when the wings fold and seal the deal tonight.
9-Rockin Bambi (4-1)-This mare has won 13 of 30 at Nfld, knows how to win from the 9-hole and has beaten this kind. The 2-Lady Rita has some gate speed and that could help put this mare in play.

        Race 14 (10:46 PM EST)

1-Face The Shadows (3-1)-Needs a trip and will use thinking there will be a fair price. Don Sherman takes the lines that could help as well as drawing the rail may lead to an efficient trip in the pocket.
3-Type A Dragon (3/2)-Winner of 2 of the last 4 starts against this kind, the last picture was a strong gate to wire performance in the slop. Wrenn will take this Burke trainee to the top and play catch me if you can as probably an odds-on choice.

        $1.00 Late Pick 4

        1,4,6/1,5,9/7,9/1,3
        Total Bet=$36

          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

          Del Mar - Race #4
#5 Rehearsal Price probably won't be much, but I think she's supposed to be tough here after finishing with a full head of steam after some trouble in her North American debut. Look for her late.
#6 She'z The Law She has been in the frame in those recent races while settling for shares, and she has a big tactical edge on a few of the other logical players. Won't be a surprise of any kind.
#7 Golden Skyline She hasn't been a serious threat in any of her races yet, but the best race of her career came going long on the turf, so she has a little upside while changing surfaces today. Underneath for a share at a price?
Race Summary Rehearsal and She'z the Law figure tough to get past in what feels like a top-heavy race between those two. The former might have a little more upside with some form that suggests she can outfinish the latter.
          Del Mar - Race #9
#4 Raging Torrent He backed up that big Derby weekend score with another win last time out, and he might offer an OK price as a potential alternative to The Chosen Vron. Some appeal while in form right now.
#6 The Chosen Vron Nothing wrong with his form as he looks for another big stakes score at another short price, as the only loss on his page came in the Grade I Breeders' Cup Sprint, so there's little doubt he's the one to beat again today.
#7 Senor Buscador This trip might be a bit sharp for him right now, but I can see him getting past some of these while tuning up for something bigger later this fall. Obvious talent could share at this trip.
Race Summary Raging Torrent gets a big test today, but his last two have been pretty sharp, and he appears to have turned a corner that earned him this hike. Easy to root for The Chosen Vron.
          Del Mar - Race #10
#10 What's the Buzz He should be a decent price even after outrunning the 90/1 offering when trying similar on the turf last time out, and I'll take that effort at face value and see if he can land this one with something similar.
#7 Glorious Life He took a nice move forward last out when stretching around two turns, and he should get the jump on the deeper finishers again today. Dangerous.
#2 Ghostly Act Honest finisher has had his chances, but he looks like a good fit again on paper. Tough to endorse with a ton of confidence on top, but he is competitive on form.
Race Summary What's the Buzz ran a big one when trying similar last time out, and he can score today if he has something a little bit better in the tank with that experience.

            Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

            Delaware Park - Race #1
#4 RAPID RUBY (8-5) Drops off claim for high percentage barn, should take some catching.
#1 ANNIEWORKSTOOMUCH (5-1) Freshened off maiden win at this level, can stalk and pounce.
#5 TOVIA (2-1) Rushed up between foes in wind and rain, was done before she checked out late turn.
Race Summary RAPID RUBY dueled on the inside and held second after the 1-to-5 favorite passed by. She was an August 2 vet scratch and drops off the claim, but she can make good use of her speed as the favorite. Bet to win and place and play a 1-4 exacta box.
            Delaware Park - Race #2
#3 LOUISE BROOKS (5-1) Squeezed start, ran into traffic on turn, lacked room in lane, good value play.
#7 PAPER MANSION (7-5) Came up a neck short of seventh straight wire-to-wire win, looms odds-on.
#1 BELLA PRINCIPESSA (6-1) Nearing $100k on turf with 1-14 record, gets in light from the rail.
Race Summary LOUISE BROOKS, 9/3-2-2 on the turf, hit her best stride recently. She won going away on soft footing at 7-1/2F, only to fall victim to a nightmare trip at this level as the favorite at today’s distance. She was ping-ponged around at the start, steadied while making an inside run on the far turn and was blocked until deep stretch. She faces a formidable task trying to catch PAPER MANSION, but the price is right for a win and place bet. Also play a 3-7 exacta box.
            Delaware Park - Race #3
#2 ONE TOUGH DAME (6-1) Had no breathers in latest, battled to stretch, could pop off the claim.
#1 BOCA ROYALTY (2-1) Piles up the checks, runs for Castillo, got up for second in four-horse field.
#5 AFLEET DIVA (6-1) Succumbed to duel, knows how to win, gets new pilot.
Race Summary ONE TOUGH DAME lands in an ideal spot on the class rise off the Arriagoda claim. She finished first or second in 9 of 21 starts on the main track and is eligible for this condition by two days. Bet to win and place and play 2-1 and 2-5 exactas.

                  # 3 CLAUDETTE HEIR 5/2
                  # 6 BACLIFF 6/1
                  # 5 POETIC UNION 8/1
My selection for this event is CLAUDETTE HEIR. Has to be carefully examined versus this group displaying very good figures lately and an average Equibase Speed Figure of 65 under similar conditions. Recorded a strong Equibase Speed Figure in the last race. Can run another good one in this contest. Ought to be carefully examined here on the basis of the figs in the speed section alone. BACLIFF - Must be considered here on the basis of the figures in the speed section alone. The winning percentage shown by horses entered by Gustafson running at this distance are the most competitive in this group of horses. POETIC UNION - Must be given consideration - I like the numbers from the last competition.

                    Parx Racing - Race #1 - Post: 12:40pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $19,000 Class Rating: 61

                    Rating:

                    #5 PRETTY LILY (ML=4/1)
                    #8 BE MY QUEEN (ML=9/2)

PRETTY LILY - This jock/handler duo has been producing a very beneficial ROI, right at +73. Last time she ran at this trip she garnered a speed rating good enough to win today's race. Have to forget about that last turf race. This filly should do better hitting the main track right here. BE MY QUEEN - Don't often see a beneficial return on investment like +153. This jockey/trainer pair has done well together over the last 12 months. She has the topmost (EPS) earnings per start. Take a good look at this horse.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #6 GAJA RAY (ML=3/1), #1 INCAN MOON GODDESS (ML=6/1), #11 MISSUPTOWNTOODELOU (ML=6/1),

GAJA RAY - 3/1 odds isn't enough for this thoroughbred when scrutinizing the most recent efforts. INCAN MOON GODDESS - I forecast a setback for this animal in this contest. MISSUPTOWNTOODELOU - Hasn't finished in the money in any short distance contests lately. Unlikely to see her doing it this time around either.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - PRETTY LILY - Having the best speed fig last race of 61 at Monmouth Park on Jun 15th. This filly has an excellent chance to win here.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #5 PRETTY LILY to win. Have to have odds of at least 7/5 or better though

                      # 1 CHASIN MUNNY 5/2
                      # 5 TARANTINO 10/1
                      # 4 COWBOY MIKE 2/1
I've got to go with CHASIN MUNNY. Is worth careful consideration and may be a wager - strong Equibase speed figs (95 average) at today's distance and surface lately. I expect a very good performance from this pony whose handler has one of the strongest return on investment percentages with horses running at this distance and surface. Has formidable early lick and will probably fare quite well against this group. TARANTINO - Earnings per start at the distance/surface is a good handicapping angle. This one ranks at the top in this group. Is tough not to consider based on Equibase Speed Figures which have been strong - 96 avg - of late. COWBOY MIKE - Has been running quite well lately and will probably be close to the front end early on.

                        Charles Town - Race #1 - Post: 7:00pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $10,800 Class Rating: 54

                        Rating:

                        #5 FUJI FIRE (ML=7/2)
                        #7 SENSUAL CHOCOLATE (ML=6/5)

FUJI FIRE - I really like sprinters that make a rapid turnaround. Don't often see a profitable ROI like +104. This jockey/trainer tandem has done well together over the last year. A repeat of that latest effort on August 15th where he earned a speed figure of 45 looks good enough to score in this event. SENSUAL CHOCOLATE - Lewis is right back for another event today after riding aboard this horse for the first attempt on August 3rd and ought to know the ropes to this one a little better. This front-runner should benefit from this contest's shorter trip. This horse is tops in earnings per race. He looks sharp in today's race. Look for this horse to show better right here. Last race at Charles Town finishing fifth on a sloppy track is no indication of his true ability.

                        Vulnerable Contenders: #4 TIZAWINNER (ML=3/1),

TIZAWINNER - This entrant has not scored here today in 10 starts. Little chance he wins today. Disappointing speed fig last out at Charles Town at 7 furlongs. Don't think this mount will improve too much in today's event.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - FUJI FIRE - Taking a very big class fig tumble today. Let's score on the big drop.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Put your money on #5 FUJI FIRE on the nose if you can get odds of 5/2 or more
