Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    August 30, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia

Yonkers Raceway begins the weekend with a 12-race card. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 9, and the sequence will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 9 (9:40 PM EST)

2-Dougs Babe A (9/2)-Faces the Invites and should offer a solid price. Needs an efficient trip and could get one with this post draw.
3-Lit De Rose (4-1)-Came the back half in 54.1 to post an overdue win and now steps-up. Knows how to beat this kind and could be cycling back into sharp form.
5-Man Dontforget Me (6-1)-This is a veteran check casher and ships back to Yonkers. Will need a big try at this level but like others a win here isn't out of reach. Did double up versus this company in June.

    Race 10 (10:00 PM EST)

1-Front Page Story (8/5)-Has been right there versus this kind and drawing the rail should help. The program chalk isn't automatic, but the race probably goes through this mare.
5-Atreacherous A (8-1)-Comes off even efforts against better and now drops to the level of its last win. Looking for an aggressive drive and this could be wake-up time.
6-Easy To Please (6-1)-Hasn't sealed the deal in a while but did race well against better last time. Should improve on the drop and could be overlooked at the windows.

    Race 11 (10:20 PM EST)

1-PL Oscar (3-1)-Oscar isn't easy to figure, drops and may have met a beatable field but has been idle since 8-9. When the 6-year-old is dialed on high he takes control, and plays catch me if you can. That will likely be the plan and will take a swing that trip leads to a picture.
5-Unforgettable (7/5)-Bumps up after a gate to wire score. Looking for Bartlett to either get on the point or end up in the pocket. Should be a main player and hopefully won't be over bet.

    Race 12 (10:40 PM EST)

3-Creative Venture (6/5)-Was used hard from post 7, got the top but the trip took its toll and faded down the lane. The Stafford trainee is camera shy, and this is not a group of all-stars so that helps. The short price is hard to swallow but is difficult to leave off the ticket.
4-Up Helly AA (7/2)-Jordon Stratton lands on the Saratoga shipper and steers for the Adamczyk barn. There isn't much form to chew on so will lean toward a fresh face joining a barn that has been clicking. Appears to fit, could leave to get a trip at the top of the stack and pick up a rare Yonkers win.

    $1.00 Late Pick 4

    2,3,5/1,5,6/1,5/3,4

Saratoga Pick 4 for Friday, Aug. 30

      August 30, 2024 | By Frank Carulli

      SARATOGA PICK 4
      Friday, Aug. 30, 2024

The featured Grade 3 Saranac Stakes will lead off a 50-cent Pick 4 at Saratoga this Friday, Aug. 30. The six-horse field appears anyone’s race to win, but the Pick 4 sequence won’t get any easier with three Maiden Special Weight races to follow, all with the maximum 10 starters.

SAR 6th race (3:20 p.m. EST) --Five of the six entrants in the $175,000 Saranac arrive off long-distance victories at various venues. TAKE ME TO CHURCH, a three-peat winner in Ireland before taking on graded stakes foes in his last two starts, makes his U.S. debut for trainer Brad Cox. His uncoupled stablemate, WEST HOLLYWOOD adapted well to a change of tactics and was ‘patiently handled’ before rallying to win an allowance at this distance for a 27-percent ‘repeat’ barn. THE BIG TORPEDO continues to impress, winning from on and off the pace against quality fields of New York breds in his last two starts. The wins came on the heels of a near 22-1 upset in open stakes company. He got beat a half-length in the $125,000 Woodhaven but finished 4-1/2 lengths ahead of Carson’s Run, winner of the Grade 1 Saratoga Derby Invitational earlier this month. He is our top choice in here.

SAR 7th race (3:54 p.m. EST) -- CHICAZTECA rallied for third in a well-bet debut at Finger Lakes but benefitted when the favorite bolted on a commanding lead. She has a race under her belt, which none of the others have, but look elsewhere, nonetheless. VERY COSMOPOLITAN will try to add her name to the list of productive 2-year-olds by her sire, Complexity, whose first crop of runners are 15-56 overall and 6-28 in their debut. Her dam, Violent Turbulence, won the $200,000 Parx Dash in her first stakes attempt. Trainer Jorge Abreu is 15/5-4-1 with debut 2-year-olds since August 2022. Three of the winners were in MSW company at Saratoga, so use both BLUE EYED SCOUT and CAMPAIGN CHAMPAGNE on the ticket. DIVINE WORKS ships in with a series of flashy workouts at Laurel Park for trainer Michael Trombetta, who stable is enjoying a 56/9-11-8 August competing at various tracks.

SAR 8th race (4:29 p.m. EST) -- NATIONAL ARCHIVE has the bloodlines to beat the boys in her 1-1/16-mile turf debut for the high-percentage tandem of trainer Christophe Clement and jockey Flavien Prat. Her sire, Constitution, ranks third in North America in 2024 in progeny turf earnings, and her dam, Lyn B, ran second at this distance in the only start of her career. DIGNIFIED RESPONSE is a longshot worth considering. His dam was 18/5-2-4 on turf with $195k in earnings. His trainer, George Weaver, is 0-9 with first-out 2-year-olds on the turf this year, but he was 5-14 last year at an average win mutuel of $16.60. TRINITY RIVER’S connections are 4-for-11 at the current meet and his sire, Air Force Blue, produced the likes of Grade 2 turf winner Air Force Red (5-19, $439k on turf) and Grade 2-placed grass router Astronomer.

SAR 9th race (5:04 p.m. EST) -- OFF SCRIPT, roughed up at the start in her debut, ‘kicked on belatedly’ in a field of mostly first-time starters to finish second to 5-2 second choice Accelerating, who came back with an easy stakes win at odds-on. MOONLIGHT GAL gets a spot on the ticket off a fastest-of-182 bullet workout at Saratoga August 11. VALTELLINA, by the aforementioned hot first-out sire Complexity, is another price play worth using. EARLY ON, under urging in the back of the pack, floated 6-wide in the stretch but got up for third, now enters the always dangerous Saffie Joseph Jr. barn.

      Suggested 50-Cent Ticket
      SAR 6th Race: 1, 3, 5
      SAR 7th Race: 4, 5, 10
      SAR 8th Race: 2, 3, 5
      SAR 9th Race: 1, 5, 7, 10
      Cost: $54

Gulfstream Turf Notes: Grass Racing Returns Friday

        August 29, 2024 | By 1/ST BET

Friday’s card at Gulfstream Park welcomes turf racing back to the South Florida scene after a few weeks of course regeneration. Let’s get you up to speed on handicapping the grass at Gulfstream, courtesy of the Betmix database.

Since the Royal Palm Meet opened in April, the 2024 summer turf set at Gulfstream has been dominated by trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. with 21 wins, but he’s been favored in an overwhelming share of those scores and has exhibited a flat-bet loss ROI for bettors. Mark Casse (11) is the only other barn in double-digit victories. Jose D’Angelo and David Fawkes have had the barns with a positive ROI on turf. Jockeys Edgard Zayas (27 wins), Edwin Gonzalez (24) and Leonel Reyes (23) all are hitting 18-22% on the lawn during that span and top the colony.

The Sunshine Meet opens with the start of September and runs through Thanksgiving when the Championship Meet takes flight. Digging into the Betmix database going back to 2019, the September-October-November turf scene at Gulfstream Park has seen 40% winning favorites on turf during that span.

Trainers who have won 20% or higher and shown a positive ROI during that timeframe include David Fawkes, Saffie Joseph Jr., Amador Sanchez and Patrick Biancone. Top turf jockeys are as expected, Emisael Jaramillo and Edgard Zayas, but note strong numbers from Paco Lopez when he returns from New Jersey during this part of the calendar.

An interesting handicapping note comes in turf sprints, where the rail (post 1) has won 19% with a $1.34 ROI for every $1 bet during this time of year since 2019.

        Upcoming Gulfstream Turf Stakes
Sept. 21 // Bob Umphrey Turf Sprint (3up), Ginger Punch Handicap (f/m)
        Sept. 28 // Hollywood Beach (2yo)
        Oct. 26 // Our Dear Peggy (2yo f)
        Nov. 1 // Cellars Shiraz (3yo f)
        Nov. 2 // Armed Forces (2yo), Showing Up (3yo)

            Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

            Del Mar - Race #3
#1 Tequilaandtherapy She ran well here last week behind a logical winner, and she might be able to find a dangerous spot right near the front while getting around two turns. Think she's heading in the right direction, and I'm not sure who you're supposed to be afraid of in here.
#9 Grazen Gator She has a claim on this one after getting past a few horses in the debut to run second despite never threatening the winner, and she might have some upside while getting around two turns with that race under her belt.
#6 Warm Reception Debuter finds about as nice a debut spot on paper as you're going to get, so I'll take a look at him on the tote and track ahead of this with the idea that he can land some of this first out.
Race Summary Tequilaandtherapy seemed to take to the local footing last out, and her tactical sprint pace might leave her in a great spot from the fence while stretching out. Solid lean for me.
            Del Mar - Race #5
#9 Far Western Not much than a brief chase-and-fade effort from this guy in the debut, but the barn has landed a couple races like this here over the years, and this one feels like a bit of a free-for-all to me on paper. Price appeal.
#11 Johnson's Magic He's the one to beat at what might be a modest price, but the race becomes pretty wide open if he doesn't land it. Obvious threat off the sharp debut try.
#5 Uncle Evco He only went evenly in the debut run, but I respect the connections and his upside enough to think he's worth a look again today.
Race Summary Far Western has some room to come forward after fading in the debut try, as I don't trust some of the more logical players in here outside of the chalk, so I'll take a price shot.
            Del Mar - Race #8
#6 Dr. Ray D. She has carried her track with her before, so she has some appeal while making this local start off the string of Gulfstream races. Think she finds a pretty good spot while keeping tabs on the action.
#3 Class Clown She has not been staying well late in her races, but the class relief today gives her some hope to move forward and stick around better. Obvious threat, but I also wouldn't be totally shocked to see her take some pressure and fold.
#10 She's Just Fluffy She tracked and faded in that turf route last out, but I think you can forgive her for that one and consider her a threat while getting back into claiming spot more like the level at which the new barn jumped in for her back in June. Can be tough while spying the speed.
Race Summary Dr. Ray D. might be just playable enough on the tote today with Class Clown and She's Just Fluffy also likely to take a little cash. I think her style will likely leave her in the right kind of spot to score today.

              Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

              Saratoga - Race #1
#7 INCANTO (3-1) Idle since triple ‘key’ grass debut in May, worked in :35-3/5 from gate last Friday.
#8 GATE TO WIRE (2-1) Pletcher firster out-worked 262 others in his last two preps from the gate.
#3 TIZ DASHING (5-1) Champion sire’s first crop is 4-12 on turf and dam won her debut on the grass.
Race Summary A little experience can go a long way for INCANTO, the lone entrant to run on the turf. He was hard-ridden while chasing the dueling leaders through fast fractions in that debut 3-1/2 months ago at Gulfstream Park. Three runners exited that race and won MSW grass sprints with an average 71 Beyer. Bet on him to win and place and play a 3-7-8 exacta box.
              Saratoga - Race #3
#1 BOSSMAKINBOSSMOVES (9-2) Two wins at distance, pace player at a price for new connections.
#4 MIGHTY ATLAS (2-1) Earned $123k in seven dirt routes since Maker claim, switches to turf.
#6 CUT THE CORD (5-2) Foiled ‘Atlas’ three-peat bid, then raced 7-wide in race dominated by closers.
Race Summary BOSSMAKINBOSSMOVES caught class-dropping and tiring favorite Colloquy (7-25, $351k) for his second win at 1-1/8 miles, now steps up off the Jacobson claim. He raced close-up in his lone start on turf and that could be the plan with the rail in a field that lacks speed. Bet to win and place and play 1-4 and 1-6 exactas.
              Saratoga - Race #5
#3 DEVIL BLUE DRESS (10-1) Big wake-up call in local debut, can return quick claim dividend.
#1 BACKSTRETCH ROSE (5-2) -- S #1 BACKSTRETCH ROSE (5-2) -- Second to future G-2 victor at Spa last August, second in this spot at Spa this August.
#2 PITCH CLOCK (7-5) Backed up readily in last two starts but class could show today.
Race Summary DEVIL BLUE DRESS ran to her :47-1/5 bullet workout and just missed on the class plunge off a two-month layoff. She dueled through the turn and battled the late-running favorite to the wire at 6-1/2F and has a front-end maiden win at this distance to summon. She’s worth a longshot stab on the class hike for her new barn. Bet to win and place and play a 1-2-3 exacta box.

                    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                    # 1 CRISPER 2/1
                    # 7 RETWEET 5/2
                    # 10 A WESTERN YARN 4/1
I've got to go with CRISPER. He must be given a shot given the quite good speed figures. Is a contender - given the 99 Equibase Speed Figure from his most recent race. A solid 98 avg class figure may give this gelding a distinct class edge versus this field. RETWEET - Should definitely be given a shot in this event if only for the very strong speed figure earned in the last outing. He has garnered respectable figures under today's conditions and will most likely fare well versus this field. A WESTERN YARN - Delacour has him trained very well to break promptly out of the gate. He has a good opportunity in this event as handler, Delacour, has strong win rate with horses going this distance.

                      Del Mar - Race #8 - Post: 6:30pm - Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $29,000 Class Rating: 84

                      Rating:

                      #3 CLASS CLOWN (ML=5/2)

CLASS CLOWN - Likes to go to the head of the pack and the fact that today is a shorter distance should be advantageous. Taking a class drop in class rating points from her August 4th race at Del Mar. Based on that data, I will give this animal the edge. Koriner will try adding blinks today in hopes of an improved performance.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #10 SHES JUST FLUFFY (ML=7/2), #2 JUST IS (ML=9/2), #11 BARBERA (ML=6/1),

SHES JUST FLUFFY - This horse didn't go to the lead and didn't make up ground down the lane last time she ran. JUST IS - This animal likes to hit the board, but doesn't usually finish first. Forget the top spot. BARBERA - Hard to put your dough on the win end of any thoroughbred that finishes second and third as often as this entrant does. Hasn't hit the board in any sprint affairs recently. Not probable to see her doing it this time out either.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - CLASS CLOWN - One of the class angles that my good buddy Solo and I play, is to look at the lifetime earnings per start. This thoroughbred is number one in my book.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #3 CLASS CLOWN on the win end if we get at least 1/1 odds

                        Emerald Downs - Race #1 - Post: 7:00pm - Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $10,000 Class Rating: 86

                        Rating:

                        #2 HELEN'S SUN (ML=4/1)
                        #4 RIMROCK LAKE (ML=9/2)
                        #1 TRIBUNAL LOVE (ML=8/1)

HELEN'S SUN - Jenne has this gelding going in the ideal affair. RIMROCK LAKE - Trainer, Navarro, has been deliberate with this gelding off the layoff. Look for a solid effort today. This animal is uppermost in earnings per race. He looks sharp in today's clash. TRIBUNAL LOVE - I like to see fast drills. This gelding's last one was very good. Second fastest of the day. Getting a weight break of 8 pounds from last race at Emerald Downs on July 19th. This certainly could make the difference right here.

                        Vulnerable Contenders: #3 THEUNTOUCHABLEONE (ML=3/5),

THEUNTOUCHABLEONE - Awfully difficult to wager on this questionable contender when he hasn't been showing any signs of readiness of late.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #2 HELEN'S SUN on the win end if we get at least 7/2 odds

                          Race 9 - Maiden - 250y on the Dirt. Purse: $15000 Class Rating: 75

QUARTER HORSE 250Y, FOR MAIDENS, FILLIES TWO YEARS OLD. WEIGHT, 124 LBS.
                          RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                          # 6 THE BLOOD ROSE 3/1
                          # 9 ULTRA CARTEL 9/2
                          # 8 WOMP ON IT 9/2
THE BLOOD ROSE looks to be a solid contender. Has run very well when running a short race. With better than average trips to the winner's circle, Rodriguez ought to have this filly in excellent position to win the contest. Keep this filly in your exotics as Rodriguez has given backers some double digit gains. ULTRA CARTEL - She ought to be considered given the decent speed figs. Has competitive early pace and will most likely fare soundly against this group of horses in this race. WOMP ON IT - Should be considered here on the basis of the numbers in the speed department alone.
