Jeremy Plonk: Pacific Classic at Del Mar Post Draw Reaction

    August 27, 2024 | By Jeremy Plonk

Adare Manor drew post position 7 of 9 and is the 9-5 favorite on Jeff Siegel’s morning line for Saturday’s $1 million Pacific Classic at Del Mar. The 5-year-old mare pursues history as she looks to join Hall of Famer Beholder as the only mares to beat the boys in the mile and one-quarter test, which inaugurated in 1991. Her trainer, Bob Baffert, won this race a year ago with Arabian Knight and looks to pad his record with an eighth Pacific Classic score.

Horseplayers at 1/ST BET and Xpressbet on Saturday can enjoy a Bet $100, Get $25 promotion when you play at least $100 on the races both at Del Mar and Saratoga.

Adare Manor has won 10 of 18 starts, including 3 straight. And like Adare Manor, Beholder was age 5 when she won the 2015 Pacific Classic in no-doubt-about-it-style. She, too, was coming off a victory in Del Mar’s Clement L. Hirsch, before scoring by 8-1/4 lengths as the 2-1 favorite.

Adare Manor rarely races more than a length off the lead and figures to be forwardly placed throughout the Pacific Classic. Six of these entrants have battled for the lead in recent outings and the pace should be contested. With a long run to the first turn at 10 furlongs, post should not be a major handicapping factor.

The Pacific Classic’s distance will be the longest attempt to date for Adare Manor, as it alswo will be for Grade 2 San Diego winner Dr. Venkman, who has sprinted in 4 of 5 starts. He’s by sprinter-turned Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Ghostzapper and boasts a 5: 3-2-0 record for Mark Glatt.

The field also includes Argentine export Full Serrano, a front-end mile allowance winner at Del Mar earlier this month in his only US start for John Sadler, who has trained 4 of the last 6 Pacific Classic winners. The only true shipper in the lineup will be multiple Grade 3 winner Il Miracolo, who has split time between Florida and Saratoga training bases while traveling the country and winning 1 of his last 8 with 6 additional in-the-money finishes during that time. Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith seeks a record-breaking fifth Pacific Classic victory, which would push him past the late Garrett Gomez on the all-time list. Michael McCarthy has more stakes wins this summer at Del Mar (4) than any other trainer and his owners have supplemented There Goes Harvard at the eleventh hour.

    //

    Del Mar // Race 10 // X pm ET // $1 million Pacific Classic // 1-1/4 miles

1-Il Miracolo (Mike Smith // Antonio Sano) 5-1
2-There Goes Harvard (Hector Berrios // Michael McCarthy) 15-1
3--Dr. Venkman (Antonio Fresu // Mark Glatt) 5-2
    4-Reincarnate (Kazushi Kimura // Bob Baffert) 8-1
    5-Katonah (Tiago Pereira // Doug O’Neill) 8-1
6-Full Serrano (Reylu Gutierrez // John Sadler) 12-1
7-Adare Manor (Juan Hernandez) // Bob Baffert) 9-5
8-None Above the Law (Jeremy Laprida // Jorge Periban) 20-1
    9-Mixto (Kyle Frey // Doug O’Neill) 20-1

    //

    Also Saturday at Del Mar:
Grade 2 $300,000 Del Mar Handicap
Grade 2 $300,000 Del Mar Mile
    Grade 3 $150,000 Torrey Pines
    Grade 3 $150,000 Green Flash
-- All undercard entries will be taken Wednesday

-- Last week was the chalkiest of the meet with 46% winning favorites and two-thirds of them landing in the exacta. This followed a 21%-winning favorites run the prior week.

-- Trainer Chad Brown led the way last week with 7 wins (29%, slight, flat-bet profit ROI).

      -- Trainer Mark Casse’s 8: 4-0-0 week produced a $2.50 profit for every $1 bet. He’s now 9-for-25 (36%) with 2-year-olds this Saratoga summer.

-- Jockey Jose Ortiz had perhaps his best week of the meet with a colony-best 7 wins (tied with Flavien Prat). Ortiz won 26% and showed a $1.45 ROI for every $1 bet.

-- Horses who made their last start in Kentucky have won a strong 18% overall at the meet going into closing week, and they’ve been exactly even in terms of ROI. Top barns on this move have been Mike Maker (6 wins, 30%), Al Stall Jr. (4 wins, 67%) and Mark Casse (4 wins, 50%).

Scott Shapiro: Kentucky Downs' $10 Money-Back Plays | Saturday

        August 29, 2024 | By 1/ST BET

They are back at it at Kentucky Downs on Saturday afternoon and so is the Money Back Special offer at Xpressbet and 1/ST BET. Three select races per day all meet and in this case three stakes- events with full fields for horseplayers to dive into. The $3.1M Nashville Derby (Race 8) kicks off the stakes action at 5:16PM eastern, followed by the $1.5M Ladies Turf Sprint (Race 9), and the $1.5 M Ladies Turf S. (Race 10). It should be a fun day on the border of Tennessee and Kentucky.

Here is how I will attack the Money Back Special Races assuming these runners are at or above their morning line offering:

        Race 8: Nashville Derby (G3)

Not to knock the runners in this group because they are talented turf routers but they are certainly running over their head for the lions’ share of the massive $3.1M purse. The 1 5/16-mile event is led by European import #6 Bellum Justum who obviously merits major respect. The Andrew Balding trainee ships over after his second consecutive in the money finish in a G3 event in Great Britain. If he can get to his best efforts from overseas in his first start in the States, he should be tough. #8 Carson’s Run also should be well respected at the windows after his win in the Saratoga Derby (G1). He has rattled off back-to-back victories but does return just 20 days after his career best performance in upstate New York. They can win, as can several others, but I prefer a colt that should be a much bigger price.

#2 Abrumar needs to put forth a career best performance to be there at the wire for Saffie Joseph Jr. but that is definitely within the range of outcomes. The son of Divisidero ran huge last out in the prep for this event at Ellis Park battling early, putting away the other speed, and fighting to the wire to finish second beaten less than a length. He draws favorably along the inside and should be prominently placed by jockey Edgard Zayas. Hopefully they go slow up front giving him his best shot at springing the upset.

        Play: #2 Abrumar (15-1 ML)

Race 9: Ladies Turf Sprint (G2)

The pace is likely to be contentious in this 6.5-furlong dash for the ladies, which bodes well for the chances of #11 Danse Macabre. The Army Mule filly makes the second start of her 4YO campaign after just missing to #4 Dontlookbackatall in a 5.5-furlong turf sprint at Saratoga last month. The Kelsey Danner trainee has shown an affinity for this surface already with a win and a second in two tries and should be ready for a career best performance after shaking off the rust in New York.

Play: #11 Danse Macabre (6-1 ML)

        Race 10: Ladies Turf Sprint S. (G3)

The final stakes of the day is for fillies and mares at one-mile and I like the chances of #4 Implicated. The daughter of Connect was in the Chad Brown barn through her first seven starts but moved into the Brendan Walsh stable earlier this year and has really turned a corner. Now, both of her wins since the barn switch have been with Lasix, so it is a slight gamble that she will not regress without the anti-bleeding medication, but I am willing to take my chances if she is 5-1 or higher. Implicated comes in off an impressive victory in the Nassau (G2) at Woodbine and appears to be a filly moving in the right direction against a number of runners that we have likely seen the best of already. Tyler Gaffalione will be onboard.

        Play: #4 Implicated (6-1)

          RECOMMENDED CHOICES
          # 1 REMARKABLE ELI 2/1
          # 2 LAST OF WAR 3/1
          # 5 LAHUN 5/2
REMARKABLE ELI is my choice. Could provide positive dividends based on very strong recent speed figures with an average of 66. Looks formidable against this group and ought to be one of the leaders. Could best this field based on the Equibase Speed Fig - 63 - of his last effort. LAST OF WAR - Ought to be given a shot - I like the figs from the last contest. He should definitely be considered given the strong speed numbers. LAHUN - Reliable average Speed Figures in dirt sprint races make this animal a definite contender. Could best this group of animals based on the speed figure - 63 - of his last effort.

                #6 ALLANTE (ML=9/2)

BENNY BUCKETS - You don't need to look any further. This horse has my money. Way too much early speed. ALLANTE - Belvoir brings him right back. I suggest you stick with this hot gelding. This rider and trainer's animals have been producing a lucrative return on investment. Each one of this gelding's recent finish positions has been progressively better. Look at this pattern of improvement. 49/55/57 are the last 3 speed figures.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #2 EARTHLY TIGER (ML=5/2), #3 RALLIFIED (ML=7/2), #5 RED MEMORYS (ML=5/1),

EARTHLY TIGER - Doesn't look inspiring to me after the lack of any sort of closing ability on Aug 24th. This gelding recorded a rating in his last race which probably isn't good enough in today's event. RALLIFIED - The fourth place finish position in the last affair was not the greatest. RED MEMORYS - This vulnerable equine ran a substandard speed fig last time out. He shouldn't improve and will probably suffer defeat in today's event running that fig.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #7 BENNY BUCKETS to win at post-time odds of 7/5 or better

I've got to go with SWEET FANTASY. The almost immediate return to the races points to a formidable effort today. Has performed strongly lately in route races, posting a nifty 81 avg speed rating. Casse has shown excellent profits (+2 return on investment ) at this distance/surface. ROXTON - Has been running soundly lately and will almost certainly be up on the front end early on. Could best this field based on the speed figure - 78 - of his last outing. MAJORITY OPINION - This racer enters today's contest now going off Lasix.

Louisiana Downs - Race #4 - Post: 5:20pm - Stakes - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $75,000 Class Rating: 96 Louisiana Cup Sprint S.

                    Rating:

                    #12 AVAILABLE STAR (ML=6/1)
                    #5 MANGUM (ML=8/1)

AVAILABLE STAR - I like to play horses that faced open company in their last race and drop into state bred races. This gelding fits the bill. Hasn't run at today's distance recently but does have a speed fig registered last time he tried this trip good enough to win. I like to play this handicapping angle, a thoroughbred coming back off a sharp race within the last month or so. MANGUM - This horse has shown the ability to win on different ovals. Making the move from Evangeline Downs for today's event, I have to believe he's ready to run. Sub-par try last out at Evangeline Downs was due to the off-going (he finished seventh). Will do better in this race without the off-track conditions.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #3 NOT ON HERB (ML=5/2), #6 EL DINERO (ML=7/2), #8 CLEAR AS A BELE (ML=9/2),

NOT ON HERB - Showed warnings of physical problems in the race on Jul 11th at Evangeline Downs. EL DINERO - Tough to go with this horse at 6 furlongs after showing no speed at 1 mile. CLEAR AS A BELE - Doubtful that this horse will finish better than he did last time out of the box when placing fourth.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - AVAILABLE STAR - I believe there is a good probability this gelding could win today based on a strong closing kick.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #12 AVAILABLE STAR to win at post-time odds of 7/5 or better

Hard not to think about THREEPOINTBLUECHIP as the top pick in here. This race could be controlled by this gelding. A single look at the avgerage TrackMaster Speed Rating will prove that. Seems to have a competitive class edge based on the competitors he has faced. Many horse players will recognize the exemplary TrackMaster Speed Rating in the last gathering. Stacks up against any horse in this race. GO FOR GAAGAA NO - The number crunching team keenly points out that when Burke trains this contender, the odds of finishing in the top three go way up. Palone and Burke have a formidable working relationship. Excellent results from their contests. ACTIVATION - Overall numbers appear very good. Can't throw out at this point.

BLUEBIRD REVIVAL will have you running to the cashier's window in this race. Could very well be the most favorable in the group of animals here, showing nice markings of late. Average speed is a solid 85. Very likely the class of the bunch with an average rating of 82. A nice pick. Could beat this grouping, just look at the speed rating - 81 - from his last event. TT'S MAGNUM FORCE - Take a look at this nice horse's avg speed ranking of 76 and compare to today's class rating. Looks like a respectable bet. If performance in the last contest is any indication, this solid standardbred will have a very respectable shot today. High last race TrackMaster SR. PRINCE CHARMER - Could be considered in here if only for the very good speed figure achieved in the most recent contest.
