Al Cimaglia: Scioto Downs All Stakes Pick 3

    September 6, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Scioto Downs has a 17-race card with the headliners coming in Race 12 the Charlie Hill Memorial Trot with a $260,000 purse, and in Race 13 the Jim Ewart Memorial Pace with a $250,000 purse. The $1.00 All-Stakes Pick 3 starts in Race 11, and it will be my focus.

Don't forget to register for the Bet $10 get a $10 refund on Win bets that finish 2nd or 3rd in the Hill Memorial or the Ewart Memorial.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 11-Ohio Sires Stakes Trot (9:32 PM EST)

3-Legacy Affair (5/2)-The Duke Sugg filly has won 2 of the last 3 impressively and sandwiched in between was a costly break in stride in a Sires Stakes race at Nfld. Could win getting on the point or coming off cover and has hit the board in 9 of 14 at Scioto with 4 pictures. Ronnie Wrenn should have the Long Tom filly in position to win at the top of the last turn
4-Jurassic Hattie (3-1)-Faded in last which was the first start on Lasix but was off for 19 days between races. Expecting more and using anticipating the price will be better than the morning line. Does good work at ScD hitting the board in 5 of 6 and has cashed the top check 3 times.
6-Createaqueen (7-1)-Broke stride in 2 Red Mile races and then requalified there on 8-27 with a nice effort. Willing to to use at a price and maybe the clay surface in Kentucky was the cause. The usual pilot Dan Noble is back between the pipes, hasn't missed the board at ScD in 5 starts and has taken 2 pictures. Will take a swing, and this sequence could use a price shot.

Race 12-Charlie Hill Memorial Trot (9:52 PM EST)

10-Refined (7/2)-The Virgil Morgan mare is shooting for its 3rd straight and this post draw doesn’t help the cause. But could get away okay off the gate if Ake Svanstedt leaves with the rail horse and that should happen. Dan Noble can provide a sharp steer and could win on the lead or rallying off cover around the last turn. The post helps the price and knows how to win at Scioto taking 26 pictures in 55 races.
4-Lexus Kody (9/2)-The Ron Burke pupil always seems to be in the hunt at the wire. Probably needs to have the lead around the last turn to win. But it would be best to respect chances of cashing the top check with this post draw and Chris Page driving.

Race 13-Jim Ewart Memorial Pace (10:12 PM EST)

5-Little Rocket Man (7/2)-The Ken Rucker veteran has Dave Miller in the bike, is tough as nails and sharp as a tack. The 8-year-old has won 7 of the last 8 races, and has hit the board in 11 of 14 with 8 wins at Scioto. Draws the top post and with a clean trip should be difficult to beat.
1-Charlie May (4-1)-Drawing the rail might not the best for the Steve Carter trainee but he should land in a good seat off the gate. The key factor is Charlie is in sharp form and knows how to tackle the leader down the lane. Has only one win this year and that came at Scioto in his last start. Smoked the back half in a 53.2 to get up in time and the fractions could be just as hot tonight.

    $2 Pick 3

    3,4,6/4,10/1,5
    Total Bet=$24

Del Mar Pick 3 for Friday, Sept. 6

      September 6, 2024 | By Frank Carulli

      DEL MAR PICK 3
      Friday, Sept. 6, 2024

California-bred horses will be in the spotlight as Del Mar’s final weekend of the current meet breaks from the starting gate Friday, Sept. 6. The first race drew a full field of 11 fillies for a one-mile Maiden Special Weight turf test, followed by the featured $100,000 I’m Smokin Stakes for homebred 2-year-olds at 6F on the main track. Add to that another crowded MSW grass mile and it makes for an inviting Pick 3 wager. Here’s a closer look and a suggested $1 Pick 3 ticket that costs $30:
DMR 1st race (6:00 p.m. EST) --MISS WILL steps back into the MSW ranks with improving form from the rail. She ‘came under a ride’ on the final turn last out but finished willingly behind a pair of sub 2-to-1 favorites who were class dropping. Her full brother, Old Pal, was 3-8 and a stakes winner of $220k on the turf. ON THE EQUINOX swung 5-wide at the top of the stretch and got up to finish second in a 5F grass sprint dominated by deep closers. Her trainer, Craig Lewis, is 13/3-2-3 in the last year with second-time maiden starters. LADY MONCLAIRE made first run in the same race but flattened out off a seven-month layoff. She has a good one-mile turf race to summon, when she dueled with 4-to-5 winner Lamporghini (8/2-3-0, $125k) and held third. SHE’S JUST GRAND is a longshot to include on the ticket. She trailed most of the way in her first start but showed some late interest on the rail for trainer Steve Miyadi, who is 6-for-29 the last three years with sprint-to-route turf runners at average win odds of 7-2. GLACIER RIM responded to more aggressive tactics and ‘showed the way until the final sixteenth’ in a photo-finish setback at 1-1/16 miles. But she’s 0-7 on turf, draws a difficult post and benefited when the odds-on favorite threw her head in the gate and was far back at the start.
DMR 2nd race (6:30 p.m. EST) -- R. HEISMAN was bumped, steadied and lacked room, but he still rallied in time to become the field’s first stakes winner and the one to beat in the $100,000 I’m Smokin. But trainer Peter Miller said in a published Daily Racing Form report that ‘I think we’re going to run in the (Grade 1 Del Mar) Futurity’ on Sunday. SHEA BRENNAN is today’s Pick 3 solo play after a smashing debut victory over the track. He spotted the field a couple lengths at the start, steadied on the backstretch and advanced on the rail before he powered clear in the stretch in a manner that suggests today’s extra furlong will be much to his liking. BODACIOUS has speed and a runaway first-out victory over R. HEISMAN on the resume, but he was no factor in two stakes attempts and, interestingly, removes blinkers today.
DMR 3rd race (7:00 p.m. EST) -- LADY CHIC, a $500,000 sales buy, debuts for trainer John Sadler off a series of steady works on the main track. Her sire, Tapit, won the Grade 1 Wood Memorial and her dam, Luminance, ran second in the G-1 Santa Anita Derby, but neither raced on turf in their careers. TOES kept a busy August work schedule and has the bloodlines to factor. Her sire, City of Light, won the Breeders Cup Dirt Mile and her dam, Ask Me When, is a half sister to Miss Dracayrs, a Grade 2 turf winner for the same barn. But keep an eye on the odds because trainer Neil Drysdale is 1-23 the last three years with first-out maidens on the turf, only four of whom were dismissed at single-digit odds. QUEEN KIMBY debuts off a series of 5F works at Los Alamitos for a trainer-jockey duo that is 42-178 the last three years with turf starters. She is by More Than Ready, the 11th-ranked turf sire in progeny earnings this year.

      Suggested $1 Ticket
      DMR 1st Race: 1, 2, 7, 10, 11
      DMR 2nd Race: 1
      DMR 3rd Race: 2, 7, 8
      Cost: $30

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Del Mar - Race #5
#3 Kelly's Out She's not likely to be much of a price, but she has a baseline effort on her page that seems a cut above most of these, and I imagine she'll find a pretty nice spot tracking the speed. Should handle these.
#4 Sweet Laker She's got a right to be tough after a solid run at this level last time out, and she should be in line for a great trip spying the pace in a race without a ton of super-committed speed.
#2 Beautiful Janet She has some forward pace that should keep her right up on the splits, and she was only a few lengths off similar company in June at Santa Anita. Some price appeal.
Race Summary Kelly's Out just seems a bit too good for these right now after taking a shot against allowance company when rising to face winners for the first time -- I'll see if I can get Beautiful Janet in the picture with one of the obvious top two.
        Del Mar - Race #7
#7 Zoffarelli Think you can go a few different ways in this one, but this guy is coming out of a couple races that produced decent stakes finishers here last week, and he seems in the mix today if he comes forward at all for the new team.
#6 Panic Alarm He's probably capable of something better than he showed last time at Santa Anita, and he has some of the deepest company lines in here -- he was only a length off the finish in four consecutive graded stakes tries last year and has some upside in the second run off the break. Wouldn't be against an aggressive two-deep stand with these.
#2 Beer Can Man Wanted to see a touch better from him last time out, but prior to that he was knocking heads with some of the better turf sprinters around. Wouldn't argue too hard with anyone expecting better.
Race Summary Zoffarelli and Panic Alarm both have some appeal, but I think the former might be just a bit better suited to this trip right now. Still, I like them both pretty similarly today.
        Del Mar - Race #8
#12 Classic Alphie Not sure I totally trust him to repeat the last one, but I think he lands this if he's able to bring something similar from this wide draw. Could see him tracking a couple of the unreliable forward players early on.
#10 Stephortless He hasn't picked up with a whole lot through two starts, but he has been in with better in both of those and might offer something a bit more compelling while trying this level for the first time. Wouldn't shock to see his form wake up a bit.
#2 Arromax Dropper still needs to find more, but the softer group might help him bring something more competitive today. He can win this, but I wouldn't be too thrilled at taking something like the 3/1 ML price.
Race Summary Classic Alphie brought an effort last out that might be good enough to score here, and I'm hoping he'll offer a midrange price if others are also a little worried that he might not run right back to that.

          Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

          Gulfstream Park - Race #2
#6 SPLURGE (3-1) Dueled into defeat, sheds blinkers, shortens up in distance.
#4 CHAINA (7-5) Clear of top one at the end, second to trip-sitting fave on drop to this level.
#3 INTO TOURING (5-2) Rallied for a win, a second and three thirds in last six sprints.
Race Summary Morning-line favorites CHAINA and SPLURGE helped duel each other into defeat at 5-1/2F last out, but if they stay out of each other’s way, they could run 1-2 in a field that is a combined 14-for-145. CHAINA went the better of the two in the stretch, but SPLURGE was on the inside and guided off the rail by jockey Edgar Perez. Take SPLURGE at the better price from an outside post in her third start of a cycle. Bet to win and place.
          Gulfstream Park - Race #4
#2 AWESOME TRAIN (2-1) Sustained wide run into fast pace at 7F but couldn’t reach front-end winner.
#6 EKATI KING (7-5) Can control pace on class drop with Zayas aboard, strictly one to beat.
#4 PERFORMANTE (4-1) Hard-ridden on turn, floated 8-wide in lane, got up to win nonetheless.
Race Summary AWESOME TRAIN benefited from a fast pace to earn his top speed figure to date at 7F last out, but he had to do it while rallying 4- to 6-wide to finish second to the 5-to-2 winner. He steps back up in class and changes riders for the ninth consecutive start. Bet to win and place and play 2-4, 2-6 and 6-2 exactas.
          Gulfstream Park - Race #1
#4 ANIMATED (5-2) Has all the necessary ingredients to win in his debut on the lawn.
#7 HELICITY (9-5) Led in stretch, caught by 13-1 firster at Saratoga in longer route.
#2 SKULL HONOR (10-1) Stepped it up for :35.8 gate work, dam was 5-23 and third in both turf tries.
Race Summary ANIMATED is bred to handle the distance and win at first asking on the turf. He is by highly-ranked sire Tapit and out of the dam, Granny Mc’s Kitten (4-14, $305k), who won a grass stakes race in her second start and was Grade 3 placed going a route of ground. His connections, trainer Joe Orseno and jockey Edgard Zayas, are 13-for-50 in the last month with a positive R.O.I. Bet to win and place.

IND - R9 - FOR MAIDENS, TWO YEARS OLD. WEIGHT, 120 LBS. IF THIS RACE IS TAKEN OFF THE TURF, IT WILL BE RUN AT 1 MILE AND 70 YARDS ON THE MAIN TRACK.
                RECOMMENDED CHOICES

                # 5 VEHEMENTLY 12/1
                # 7 EL DANDI 15/1
I've got to go with MINARET STATION. Has performed soundly lately in route races, posting a nifty 79 avg Equibase speed fig. Earnings per start at the distance/surface is a good handicapping angle. This horse ranks at the top in this field of horses. Likely to see a much stronger performance with the drop. VEHEMENTLY - Looks respectable to be on the lead at the first call. Is tough not to examine based on Equibase speed figs which have been solid - 51 avg - of late. EL DANDI - He looks strong in this slot and I expect will be on the front end or close at the halfway point. With a nice class figure average of 77, has one of the strongest class advantages in this group of horses.

                  # 10 JR PYC SECRET 12/1
                  # 6 MOONIN DAGOUTI 3/1
I like THE 300 here. Will most likely compete quite well in the early pace contest which bodes well with this group. Recorded a strong Equibase speed fig in the latest race. Can run another good one in this race. Has put up formidable Speed Figures in short races in the past. JR PYC SECRET - Runners trained by Sanchez in short races are typically reliable. MOONIN DAGOUTI - Will probably be one of the leaders of the bunch going into the halfway point of the outing. He has very good class ratings, averaging 71, and has to be carefully examined in this event.

                    Woodbine - Race #5 - Post: 3:17pm - Claiming - 7.5 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $28,600 Class Rating: 75

                    Rating:

                    #1 GOOD SOLDIER (ML=8/1)
                    #2 SNOOKERED (ML=20/1)
                    #5 PROFESORRIDESAGAIN (ML=6/1)

GOOD SOLDIER - Moran is back for another race today after getting on board this animal for the first time on August 8th and ought to know the ropes to this one a little better. Smith will try adding the 'hood' today in hopes of an improved performance. SNOOKERED - That last contest must not have been too hard on this gelding for him to be able to race again so quickly. This animal didn't run well on the soft turf in his last race at Woodbine. You may want to overlook that performance. The addition of blinkers usually means that a trainer wants a thoroughbred to show more early speed or to keep his attention focused. PROFESORRIDESAGAIN - The jock and trainer combination have a profitable return on investment when they are put together.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 DESIGNATED HITTER (ML=8/5), #3 STAR SCHOLAR (ML=5/2),

DESIGNATED HITTER - Mediocre rating last time around the track at Woodbine at 6 1/2 furlongs. Don't believe this questionable contender will improve too much in today's race. STAR SCHOLAR - Awfully hard to bet on this pony when he hasn't been showing any signs of life lately.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Go with #1 GOOD SOLDIER on top if we're getting at least 4/1 odds

                      Remington Park - Race #1 - Post: 6:30pm - Maiden Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $18,000 Class Rating: 74

                      Rating:

                      #1 KERAUNOS (ML=2/1)
                      #6 BRONTE DIEM (ML=7/2)

KERAUNOS - Sneaky speed on this one. He'll probably be stalking horses on the back side, then crush them down the stretch. This mount obviously likes the conditions for today's race. Has recorded the highest speed rating on the grass at the distance and surface. Trainer Willis moves this thoroughbred to a lower class rank to face a weaker class today. Look for a good performance this time out. This gelding's last figure earned on August 23rd is tops in last race speed figures. BRONTE DIEM - Ashford is great in turf routes. This horse should have no rationalizations if he doesn't win. Finished 2nd, but easily second over the third horse. Those types usually run well next time out. This colt is clearly on the improve with speed figures of 48, 56, 64 last three out.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #5 FEEL IT (ML=5/2), #7 LEVIATHAN AXE (ML=6/1), #3 GWYNETH'S MALIBU (ML=8/1),

FEEL IT - I'd like to see more conducive recent outings with morning line of 5/2. LEVIATHAN AXE - Doesn't look to be in a cozy circumstance this time around. GWYNETH'S MALIBU - Tough to wager on any mount to turn things around if there is no wager value to taking the stab.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Turf Man - KERAUNOS - Don't overlook this noble animal in your wagering. He owns the best average class figure against these horses in this event.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Play #1 KERAUNOS to win if you can get odds of 6/5 or more
