Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    September 13, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Yonkers Raceway has a 12-race card. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 9, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 9 (9:40 PM EST)

1-Parisian Blue Chip (3-1)-This veteran comes in with good form winning 2 of the last 3 races. Got its 1st win at Yonkers in 9 starts 3 back and now bumps up a level. Wired the last group easily, does fit with this kind and should be 1st or 2nd off the gate.
2-Hunting Lindy (6-1)-There could be quick fractions and Adamczyk trainee drops. Should be a player and might be overlooked at the windows. Will need the right trip, but with a sharp steer could stalk and catch the leader down the lane.
5-McMarkle Sparkle (5/2)-Drew off by over 9-lengths and now bumps up. Got on the engine from post 7 and the same game plan should be used again. Logical choice and could be over bet.

    Race 10 (10:00 PM EST)

2-Blood Moon A (6/5)-Gets a new pilot in Corey Callahan and that could make a difference. The Cullipher trainee has only raced at YR 3 times but has a win and a 2nd place finish. Should relish the company and this driver-trainer combo posts 26% winners when they team up.
5-Miss Dottie Mae (5/2)-Ships in from M1 and lands in a comfortable spot. Tries Lasix for the 2nd time and gets a ++ driver change in Brent Holland. Could be a drop and pop candidate and has cashed checks against better at Yonkers. But Dottie has been camera shy and hopefully won't be over bet.

    Race 11 (10:20 PM EST)

1-Creative Venture (6/5)-Drew off against easier and led gate to wire. Fits here and could be there at the wire but should be a small price.
5-Brave By Design (3-1)-Comes off an even effort versus better but was off 20-days between starts. Will look for an aggressive steer by Joe B and there isn't anyone to fear in this group.

    Race 12 (10:40 PM EST)

1-Uptown Hanover (5/2)-Comes back to town after wiring easier from the 8-hole. Steps-up but has beat better here this summer and is a double up possibility. Does good work at Yonkers hitting the board in 44 of 70 races with 13 pictures.
5-Ultimate Speed (9/2)-Beaten chalk is usually in the hunt at the wire. Its 2023 record indicates the same, hitting the board in 20 of 27 starts with 7 wins. Brent Holland is hot and should have the mare forwardly placed throughout.

    $1.00 Late Pick 4

    1,2,5/2,5/1,5/1,5
    Total Bet=$24

Belmont At The Big A Pick 3 for Friday, Sept. 13

      September 13, 2024 | By Frank Carulli

Saratoga is in the rearview mirror for 2024, but there’s a big rush to enter as New York racing action returns to Belmont At The Big A this Friday, Sept. 13. The featured $150,000 Winter Memories Stakes drew 10 sophomore fillies and it’s sandwiched between two more full fields that make up the $1 Late Pick 3. Here’s a closer look:

BAQ 8th race (4:42 p.m. EST) -- Nine of the 10 entrants in this New York-bred allowance have earned more than $100,000 on the turf with a combined 73/18-8-17 record. Trainer Christophe Clement has a formidable 1-2 punch uncoupled in the wagering. MARCO T is ultra-consistent and rallied to win on firm and soft footing at 6F in his two non-stakes tries at this track’s Spring Meet. STRICTLY TABOO began her 4-year-old season at Saratoga after eighth months away and took command in the final sixteenth of back-to-back wins. IM JUST KIDDIN shortens up from a pair of grass routes with two strong 6F turf sprints to summon as a 3-year-old last year. She rallied from last to get beat a length as the favorite, then ‘dug in’ to get beat in a blanket finish under today’s conditions. SPOOKY LADY stalked a fleet-footed pace setter the last time she sprinted and remained prominent until the deep closers passed by in the final sixteenth.

BAQ 9th race (5:13 p.m. EST) -- Trainer Chad Brown seeks his fourth win since 2017 in the Winter Memories Stakes and he stands a good chance with late-running DYNAMIC PRICING, who has a Grade 2 win and a pair of graded stakes-placed showings in a well-traveled 3-year-old campaign. WHISKEY DECISION returns from a cross-country trip to the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks and looks to get back on the winning track that featured three consecutive wins by a combined 14 lengths, capped by the $150,000 Christiana Stakes at Delaware Park at 1-1/8 miles on the lawn. LES REYS makes her U.S. debut in peak form. She rallied from last at the top of the stretch and surged clear late while 6-wide to impress in a one-mile stakes in France when last seen three months ago.

BAQ 10th race (5:44 p.m. EST) -- PRACTICALLY SUMMER and BUBBE DEAREST finished 2 lengths apart in MSW company August 8 at 6-1/2F and appear best of those that have run. BUBBE DEAREST led at every call until the stretch, but PRACTICALLY SUMMER lost her footing at the start, rushed up to contend and can turn the tables today. FIFI LA FUME stepped it up a notch in a recent :48-1/5 gate work but has the outside post to contend with. T D MAGEE trainer Bruce Levine is 6-for-18 with debut maiden claimers the last three years with an average win mutuel of $13.20. TOWER TWENTY TWO ships in from Parx for trainer John Servis, who is 15/5-3-1 since August 22 with maiden claimers, spanning several tracks.

      Suggested $1 Ticket
      BAQ 8th Race: 2, 4, 6, 7
      BAQ 9th Race: 3, 5, 8
      BAQ 10th Race: 7, 9, 10, 11
      Cost: $48

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Churchill Downs - Race #6
#7 Hymnal She's probably not going to be much of a price, but she has some room to bounce back after the flat try last time out. Never super thrilled about a drop off a flat run, but she gets a really great race flow to show some tactical pace in a race lacking speed.
#9 Our Prayer Wouldn't be any surprise to see her land this one while getting back on the main track and getting some class relief. Think she's one of the ones in a spot where it's difficult to separate them.
#1 Political Spin She woke up a little bit when trying claiming company last time out to avoid being embarrassed, and another drop might allow her to show her better stuff in this third career start.
Race Summary Hymnal is probably going to run somewhere between her best stuff and what she turned in last time out, and that might be enough to land this, especially if she's able to sit right up on some modest splits.
        Churchill Downs - Race #8
#9 Eunomia This is a really fun race with a handful of players who turned in nice efforts in their respective career debuts, and this filly is one of them. Think she's a bit overlooked compared to the similarly situated second-timers.
#3 First Class Lady She stayed for second behind an easy winner after flashing some pace at Saratoga, and there is probably still a bit of upside to this one with that race under her belt. One of the ones.
#1 In the Stars She brings a big pedigree to the fence for this first start, and the barn does some OK work with these types locally. Tough ask today in a spot with a lot of solid running lines on the page, but you might get a better price than you should.
Race Summary Eunomia looks very similar to three or four others in here who have turned in solid efforts so far, and I'm going to look for her to get let go at a midrange price with enough upside to land it.
        Churchill Downs - Race #9
#3 Speedy Traveler Hoping the presence of the one drawn just inside of her will help keep the price fair, as this one looks like she can be the controlling pace today while trying this longer trip for the first time. Her last two might not be quite as dull as they look when in stakes company and racing at Saratoga.
#6 Upper Case Toss that three-back turf try and the form is pretty sharp. She's got some positional pace to keep tabs on the top choice early, and she should be in a spot to engage on the turn. Threat in a fun race.
#2 Leeloo She has some imposing running lines on her page, but I'm not totally sold that the added furlong is going to work in her favor with a lot of tries on her page that were a bit one-paced in the final yards. Threat at an underlaid price?
Race Summary Quality group here, and Speedy Traveler looks likely to control the tempo while stretching out. Her best stuff is competitive here, and she might offer a 2/1 price today?

          Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

          Laurel Park - Race #1
#2 BOLD HONOR (7-2) Should sit good trip, could upstage in-the-money finishes at this level.
#7 BIGDADDYSBOY (5-1) Awakened in two-turn sprint at bullring, earning top speed fig in near miss.
#6 BOX N BEN (9-5) Shifted out of ‘second’ gear with first win of year in five-horse field at Timonium.
Race Summary BOLD HONOR was no factor in his last two starts when he chased solid middle fractions in a long sprint and got off to a slow start at 6F. But he has been a steady check-getter at this level, gets a lively pace to rally into and can notch his first win in 13 starts at Laurel Park if he doesn’t carry out several rivals at the top of the stretch as he did when second July 7. Bet to win and place and play a 2,7/2,6,7/ALL trifecta.
          Laurel Park - Race #2
#6 HATEFUL (12-1) Been trying to get on turf, live price play if she handles the surface switch.
#3 RYE SMILE (9-5) Altered course to 6-path, caught by longshot, one to beat with duplicate.
#7 SUPRISINGLY SWEET (10-1) Got up for second behind troubled winner at 5F on soft turf two back.
Race Summary HATEFUL swung 4-wide at the top of the stretch but couldn’t reach the 5-2 winner off a two-month layoff in a turf-to-dirt sprint two starts back. The vet voided a claim on her that day, but if she fires her best shot and takes to the lawn, she could spring an upset. Bet to win and place and play a 3-6-7 exacta box.
          Laurel Park - Race #7
#6 DAZE (8-5) State’s top barn last year won with 23 percent of last 120 first-time starters.
#2 SOUPER UPGRADE (6-1) Unhurried early, ran third behind co-faves in debut at Colonial Downs.
#5 QUEEN’S WREATH (5-1) Firing bullets at PN; dam won second start and was stakes-placed at 2.
Race Summary DAZE is well-prepped from the gate for her debut and shows three bullet workouts at Fair Hill. Trainer Brittany Russell won the Fall Meet title at Laurel Park last year en route to becoming the first female ever to win the year-end title in Maryland. Bet to win and place and play 6-2 and 6-5 exactas.

                # 4 ADIOS BUSTER 8/1
VENEZUELA IS GOLD looks very good to best this field. He has put up very good numbers under today's conditions and will almost certainly fare well against this field. Has very good early pace and will probably fare quite well against this group. Should be considered for this race if only for the respectable Equibase Speed Fig earned in the last contest. CENTERFOLD GUY - Shows strong speed figures on average overall when put alongside the rest of this group of animals. Will almost certainly come out strong - I have liked the way this gelding has moved swiftly to the front end recently. ADIOS BUSTER - Has to be given consideration - I like the figures from the last competition. Is worth considering and may be a bet - strong speed figures (50 average) at today's distance and surface recently.

                  Laurel - Race #7 - Post: 3:15pm - Maiden Special - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $47,000 Class Rating: 70

                  Rating:

                  #8 ITSAMONSTAMASH (ML=8/1)
                  #2 SOUPER UPGRADE (ML=6/1)

ITSAMONSTAMASH - Filly looks like the lone speed here. She may turn the race into a procession. Robb brings her back again. I advise you stick with this live filly. Just see her most recent figure, 56. That one fits in this field. SOUPER UPGRADE - Have to make this filly a serious competitor; she comes off a good race on August 22nd. In baby races you have to take a good look the sire stats. This one here has one of the most solid with 2yo's. Ranks uppermost in (EPS) earnings per start. A dominant performance today will boost the lifetime earnings. Last race out on August 22nd was a good tune-up for today. Got decent betting action in that one, but finished third. Has to do better in this race.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #6 DAZE (ML=8/5), #1 ILLUMINATRICE (ML=5/2), #5 QUEEN'S WREATH (ML=5/1),

DAZE - I just don't have a good vibe about this mount in this affair. ILLUMINATRICE - Don't think that this filly has value at 5/2 in today's event. QUEEN'S WREATH - Don't believe this entrant has what it takes to be victorious this time around.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #8 ITSAMONSTAMASH to win. Have to have odds of at least 2/1 or better though

Race 3 - Maiden Special Weight - 4.5f on the Dirt. Purse: $26500 Class Rating: 65

FOR ACCREDITED WEST VIRGINIA-BRED MAIDENS, TWO YEARS OLD. WEIGHT, 122 LBS.
                    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                    # 4 MILLE PAROLE 7/2
                    # 1 ANNAPOLIS ROAD 2/1
                    # 2 BOLD DESERT 12/1
MILLE PAROLE looks to be a competitive contender. The offspring of Thousand Words have produced strong figures racing in their first asking, combining for a +137 ROI. Deserves a shot given very solid bloodlines. This colt looks strong in this competition since Farrior has a sharp winning percentage with horses going this distance. ANNAPOLIS ROAD - The offspring of Outwork have produced solid figs running in their first asking, combining for a +14 return on investment. Looks respectable to be on the front end at the first call. Bloodlines are strong and this horse looks to be in the money. BOLD DESERT - Will almost certainly compete solidly in the early pace clash which bodes well with this group of horses in this race.

                      Churchill Downs - Race #1 - Post: 12:45pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $58,000 Class Rating: 67

                      Rating:

                      #4 CITIZEN JUDY (ML=7/2)
                      #7 ROSATO (ML=9/2)

CITIZEN JUDY - This horse has the speed, and no one may be able to keep up with her. Ennis drops her down to this level. You don't need too much more knowledge to think this horse is in a good spot at this level. Is ranked number one in earnings per race. A solid effort today can increase the lifetime bankroll. That 63 fig this filly registered in her last event tells me she's a chief player in today's event. ROSATO - The morning line odds on this filly are higher than those of the other entrant from the shedrow of trainer Ennis. Often the longer-priced part of a 'split' entry wins. Moncada rode this mount for the first time last out and comes right back in this race. Ennis is trying the 'shades' on today. Note that this horse worked from the gate in a morning prep, most likely in blinkers. Taking a trip to a lower level; has the class ability to make her presence felt.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #6 BOUTWELL TIME (ML=5/2), #3 BLUSHING KAM (ML=5/1), #8 LITTLE BIT O STORM (ML=5/1),

BOUTWELL TIME - Can't invest in this steed in today's sprint of 6 1/2 furlongs. Hasn't even finished in the money in a sprint event of late. Didn't let me see any early zip in the route race for me to back her in today's sprint race. Won't be easy for this horse to beat this bunch off of that last speed fig. Unlikely to improve enough to run a figure close to today's class rating, so put her on the likely underpriced equines list. BLUSHING KAM - Doesn't seem to have enough good qualities to warrant the reward. LITTLE BIT O STORM - Finished sixth last time. Would have to move up to hit the board in today's race. Doubtful that this animal can transfer her turf form to the dirt.

                            # 6 ROLLIN JAZZY 3/1
AS KAN YE RUN looks formidable to best this field. Has competitive Speed Figures and has to be considered for a wager in this event. Is a solid contender based on figs earned lately under today's conditions. SILVER N NAVY - Overall the speed figures of this equine look very good in this contest. Has very good front-end speed and ought to fare quite well against this group. ROLLIN JAZZY - Has to be carefully examined for this race if only for the quite good Equibase Speed Figure garnered in the last race. The twosome of Carrillo/Cornia has one of the best ROI percentages in this group of horses.

I've got to go with PERCEPTIVE. Wagerers should probably take a good look at this one as this filly has one of the best win percentages at this distance in this field. Could beat this field given the 70 speed rating posted in her last outing. Looks formidable for the conditions of this contest today, showing solid figures in dirt route races lately. GRACE GIVEN - She has to be given a chance given the decent speed figures. Must be given a shot - I like the figs from the last contest. OH MACARENA - Must be given consideration for this race if only for the respectable speed rating recorded in the last affair.
