Al Cimaglia: The Red Mile Championship Series Pick 4 Analysis

    September 15, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

The Red Mile has a 10-race card loaded with two-and three-year-old stake races. The $1.00 Pick 4 has a $20,000 guaranteed pool with a very low 12% takeout. The entire sequence consists of Kentucky Championship Series races with $400,000 purses, and it will be my focus.

    Race 6 (6:40 PM EST)

1-Secret Agent Man (5/2)-Can't seem to catch Karl, that has been the case in the last 3 races at Lex and has finished 2nd each time. Did get closer last time losing by a neck but not going to place much emphasis on that. The reason to use is the team Miller pupil has stayed flat in the last 3 starts, even after leaving from the rail last time. Seems to be getting better, has a post edge on Karl and the pool will be larger today so will use both logical choices in the opening leg.
7-Karl (7/5)-Simply put, this should be the winner, and many will single like a free square. Not much to say against that plan. But if a tough trip is going to be an issue it might happen when starting well outside of probably the biggest threat. Not expecting that to happen but will consider the possibility.

    Race 7 (6:59 PM EST)

2-R Dutchess (5/2)-Raced well in last after shipping in from Mohawk. Went off as the chalk after an impressive finish in the Peaceful Way although getting a bumpy trip. Jody Jamieson should work a cozy trip this time and looks like a main threat.
3-Luna Lovegood (9/5)-Luna does just enough to win and doesn't look dominant. But don't be fooled, has a lot left when she crosses the wire, and her best is yet to come.
5-Torrisi (9/2)-The Takter pupil seems to leave you wanting more but this is a chance for a solid price in the sequence. Draws a choice post and Yannick Gingras should be stalking close to the leader.

    Race 8 (7:18 PM EST)

5-Woman Of Passion (2-1)-The Carter Pinske entry is putting it all together in her sophomore season (10-7-1-1) and took her 1st picture at Lex on 9-2. That was the 2nd race since a sick scratch on 8-11 and my take is she is just starting to find her stride on the 1-mile oval. Will take a swing that is the correct assumption, and single while big money is on the line, and spread in the next leg.

    Race 9 (7:37 PM EST)

1-Arson (9/2)-This colt does know how to win but hasn't taken a picture at Lex in 4 starts. Did win on the red clay 4 times last year but so far hasn't been a real threat to cross the line first. Maybe the PA bred is just better on a smaller oval. But could be overlooked tonight, and Scott Zeron should be racing near the top of the stack with this post draw.
2-Better Is Nice (7/2)-Won last week after making an early brush and took command. The rail horse stopped and that collapsed the field. Did hang on to win but was getting leg weary. That said, replay watchers may discount the win. If so, that is more of a reason to use in this spot. Best to not forget the Alagna pupil has hit the board in 9 of 10 at Lex with 6 pictures.
4-Nuclear (2-1)-Came rolling hard late and was jammed up with others that allowed Better Is Nice to get the jump. Should have a smoother journey. Has been a bridesmaid in the last 2 starts and may get revenge this time.
6-Woman Layer (5/2)-Closed in .26 flat to dead heat for 2nd with the one above. Also, experienced a bumpy trip, was shuffled, and that was a factor in snapping a 4-race win streak. This is a major player who will probably be bet down.

    $1.00 Pick 4

    1,7/2,3,5/5/1,2,4,6

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

      Churchill Downs - Race #3
#4 Chun Money Expected a little bit better from him when getting in for a tag for the first time, but that was a really high-end claimer at Oaklawn, and he might be a better fit at this $50,000 level. The main worry is that he hasn't found a lot of late punch so far. Would want a midrange price.
#12 Noble Eagle He tries the main track for the first time while making his second start off the break, and he at least showed some ability to get past horses in the Fair Grounds debut back in February. Wouldn't be a surprise to see him come along late.
#14 General Issue Dangerous if he goes, he has shown some finishing ability in both of his starts while facing better. Check the changes -- he's a definite 'A' if he draws in.
Race Summary Chun Money has a little appeal at what I'm hoping is a playable single-digit number. He tried tougher company so far and might be able to hang around better with this kind of crew.
      Churchill Downs - Race #6
#4 Margot's Angel She split a small group at Saratoga in the debut, but she stretches out at second asking with some pace in a group that doesn't have a lot of serious speed signed on. Should be right up on the tempo.
#5 Dawn After Dawn She's another who might be able to find a good spot near the top while getting around two turns, and it wouldn't be a shock to see her stick around for a piece if the pace isn't too taxing.
#6 Rando She didn't show anything at 34/1 in the debut try, but she's back to try a route trip after logging four works since the debut run. Better today?
Race Summary Margot's Angel and Dawn After Dawn might get similar trips in here, but I think the former probably has the edge while likely moving forward at this route trip.
      Churchill Downs - Race #9
#5 Baton Rouge He has some dangerous versatility with pace to make a break for it if nobody else wants to take a serious run up top combined with the ability to rate just a touch. Think he'll score here, but I'm curious at what price.
#3 Event Detail I don't think he'd be the worst midrange price swing with some form that is only muddied by the Grade II Rebel try. Would want him on some of the backup plays.
#12 Game Warden Wouldn't argue with anyone landing here as he goes in search of the hat trick, but I wonder when/if he's due for a slight step back toward his baseline after a couple big efforts.
Race Summary Baton Rouge gets the edge here with some reliable form and tactical speed that should leave him in a great spot from the start. Event Detail is worth a long look, especially if he stays at a nice price while Baton Rouge gets bet.

            Race 3 - Allowance - 6.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $6300 Class Rating: 58

FOR FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NEVER WON FOUR RACES OR AB BREDS THAT HAVE NEVER WON FIVE RACES. THREE YEAR OLDS, 124 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS.
            RECOMMENDED CHOICES
            # 7 ARIZONA LINDY 5/2
            # 2 GOLDEN TRAIN 2/1
            # 4 MIAMI SOUVENIRS 9/2
I think ARIZONA LINDY is a strong choice. She has a good opportunity here as handler, Giesbrecht, has sharp win clip with horses going this distance. Looks respectable to be on the front end at the first call. Her earnings per start in dirt sprint events alone makes you take a look at her. GOLDEN TRAIN - Have to assume this entrant will do well following the quick major improvement. The speed fig of 60 from her last race looks strong in here. MIAMI SOUVENIRS - Overall the Equibase Speed Figures of this animal look very good in this contest. There is a formidable chance that this entry's late pace will improve now going off Lasix.

              Race 2 - Claiming - 4.5f on the Dirt. Purse: $10000 Class Rating: 80

FOR THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NOT WON A RACE IN 2024. THREE YEAR OLDS, 122 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $2,500.

              # 2 EURO TRACKING 9/5
              # 1 NEW YEARS LOVE 15/1
My choice in this race is JUSTIN SPEIGHT and is a strong value bet given the line at 8/1. Will most likely go to the front end and should never look back. Is difficult not to examine based on Equibase speed figs which have been formidable - 66 avg - of late. He has a good opportunity for this event as conditioner, Hibdon, has solid win clip with horses going this distance. EURO TRACKING - Has been racing in the most competitive company of the group recently. With a solid 63 average Equibase Speed Figure at the distance, seems well suited for today's affair. NEW YEARS LOVE - The speed rating of 71 from her latest contest looks very good in here. This mare gets a boost with Ramos in the saddle.

                PURCHASE

                Woodbine - Race #1 - Post: 1:10pm - Maiden Special - 8.5 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $111,300 Class Rating: 83

                Rating:

                #2 WAR WARRIOR (ML=7/2)
                #7 ACCELERANDO (ML=3/1)
                #8 HAMMERHEAD (ML=5/2)

WAR WARRIOR - Civaci should have him moving strong on the turn. ACCELERANDO - You'll be generating profits right and left by turning your betting money onto this rider/trainer combination. Rider hops up aloft after getting to know the horse by riding last time around the track. That's always a good thing. He has the topmost EPS (earnings per start). Check out this thoroughbred. HAMMERHEAD - This animal has recorded the best recent turf speed rating at the dist-surf. This horse didn't run well on the soft turf in his last race at Saratoga. You should discount that performance. Notched a nice turf number on August 17th at Saratoga. A repeat in this race, and this one has a great shot to win. Generally speaking, horses on Lasix for the first time should be considered. That's what we have here.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #5 NIIGON'S LAW (ML=6/1), #6 SUGAR BUZZ (ML=8/1),

NIIGON'S LAW - The speed figure last time around the track doesn't fit very well in this race when I look at the class figure of today's race. Mark this horse as a vulnerable competitor. SUGAR BUZZ - This gelding hasn't been showing me anything positive in the last two races.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - HAMMERHEAD - With the highest last speed rating of 76, this colt looks exceptional against these thoroughbreds.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #2 WAR WARRIOR to win if you can get at least 2/1 odds

                  Churchill Downs - Race #7 - Post: 3:50pm - Allowance - 7.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $127,000 Class Rating: 91

                  Rating:

                  #2 HUNTRESS FOR HIRE (ML=8/1)
                  #8 HEY OLIVIA (ML=4/1)
                  #7 BENEDETTA (ML=8/1)
                  #14 SISTER KISSES (ML=15/1)
                  #1 LEMON MUFFIN (ML=7/2)

HUNTRESS FOR HIRE - Fits well considering the fact that the last time she tried this distance she got a speed rating good enough to win today. HEY OLIVIA - The jock/handler tandem of Morales and Pitts has a strong ROI together. Rounding her way back into form. Each of her finish positions is getting better in her recent starts. This filly is in excellent physical condition right now. Ended up first last out and comes back soon. Have to like the way Pitts has raced this filly back into shape off the layoff. Animal is well spotted in this sprint and I think she'll run well today. BENEDETTA - A thoroughbred coming back this soon after a strong outing is a good signal. Look at this pattern of improvement. 72/77/87 are the last three speed figs. SISTER KISSES - A pony coming back this rapidly after a strong outing is a good signal. This one likes to win on different ovals. The switch in venue today may be a wake up call. LEMON MUFFIN - Torres and Lukas perform well when they are put together. It's hard to beat a +35 ROI for a jockey and handler. Ran a fast time for the last quarter on July 20th at Saratoga. Anything close right here should get the job done. Another way to assign class is earnings per race entered. This thoroughbred has the top in the group. I think she'll be close at the end. Carrying 6 pounds less this race. Trainer has her in a good spot. Lukas adds Lasix to this one today. I'd look for an improvement.

Vulnerable Contenders: #15 MUGEN (ML=7/2), #13 MISS ROCKETTE (ML=5/1), #3 SWEET GAL OF MINE (ML=6/1),

MUGEN - 7/2 is not worth the risk for any mount in a sprint of 7 furlongs that hasn't hit the board in a short distance event recently. MISS ROCKETTE - Doesn't seem inspiring to me after the lack of any type of closing response on August 4th. Most of the time I need a sprinter to have some success lately in short distance affairs in order to play her. SWEET GAL OF MINE - No races since March 30th, probably too long ago to be effective today.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - SISTER KISSES - I play this angle all the time. Top Power Rating and morning line odds of at least 5/1.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #2 HUNTRESS FOR HIRE on the win end if we get at least 9/2 odds
                  EXACTA WAGERS: Box [2,7,8]

                        Gulfstream Park - Race #3 - Post: 1:54pm - Maiden Claiming - 8.3 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $25,000 Class Rating: 68

                        Rating:

                        #7 AWESOME EMPRESS (ML=6/1)
                        #2 REINA MAR (ML=5/1)

AWESOME EMPRESS - Lets try to beat the chalks with this filly. Just missed last out, but ran a respectable race. REINA MAR - Was in a $16,000 Maiden Claiming race at Gulfstream Park last out. That affair had a class number of 73 and she is moving down in this event. A certain solid contender. Last raced at Gulfstream Park with a poor post position. I swiped some data from The Brain, and his computer says the inside should be a big help to this one today. Has a decent opportunity to break maiden switching over to the dirt today.

                        Vulnerable Contenders: #6 HIS CHOICE (ML=3/1), #4 MAKIA (ML=7/2), #5 TAKE YOUR POINT (ML=4/1),

HIS CHOICE - Awfully tough to wager on this horse when she hasn't been showing any indications of eagerness recently. Notched a disappointing speed rating last time out in a $25,000 Maiden Claiming race on Aug 25th. Unlikely to see an improved performance off of that number. MAKIA - 7/2 odds isn't enough for this one when checking the most recent outings. TAKE YOUR POINT - Doubtful that this equine will finish better than she did last time when placing third.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #7 AWESOME EMPRESS to win if you can get at least 5/2 odds

MAXIMATCH looks very strong to best this field. Will likely be one of the front-runners of the group going into the halfway point of the affair. Garnered a formidable speed figure in the last race. Can run another good one in this race. The average class fig of 64 makes this one hard to beat. IKE'S GAMBLE - Could beat this field given the 75 speed figure earned in his last outing. Has posted reliable speed figures in turf route races in the past. CHEVY MAN - Has longshot potential and could prove victorious at big odds. Expect a speed boost today from this animal going off blinkers.
