Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    September 20, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Yonkers Raceway has an 11-race card. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 8, and the sequence will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 8 (9:20 PM EST)

1-Dixie Dream (5/2)-Went off at 1/5 against this kind and lost all chance breaking stride at the start. Will toss last and look for redemption. The Burke trainee could down this group with a top effort, and the price will be better tonight.
3-Atreacherous A (6-1)-Faded down the lane versus tougher and now drops to a competitive level. This mare has won 4 of 15 at Yonkers and could be sitting on a big try at a square price.

    Race 9 (9:40 PM EST)

4-Elektra A ((7/2)-Tyler Buter gets the nod, and he was the pilot for a win 2 back. Moved up to face this company and put in a decent try considering missing a start. Should get a close up seat and be heard from down the lane.
5-Silk Cloud A (3-1)-Knows how to beat this kind and getting some post relief could be the winning difference.
6-Coachellabound N (9/2)-Got on the engine last week from post 4 and made every call a winning one. Has the gate speed to do the same from this post.

    Race 10 (10:00 PM EST)

1-P L Oscar (8/5)-Oscar has been searching for a win. Lands in the basement, draws the rail and excuses won't be accepted. Figures to be in play but wins about as often as the seasons change.
6-Hustlenomics (5/2)-This contest is a taffy pull and the 5-year-old raced well in its 1st start since shipping in from Scioto. Comes back in sequence in the 2nd start for the DiDomenico barn and George Brennan gets the call. Figures to be a player but can't trust, and hopefully won't be bet down.

    Race 11 (10:20 PM EST)

3-No More Sweets (6-1)-Makes the 4th start for the Engblom barn, drops, and tries Lasix for the 1st time. Northfield shipper could be out and rolling with Job B at the controls. Looking for a solid price in a race without a standout.
7-Energysource (4-1)-Tried to go gate to wire against better last time but faded to finish 2nd. Now drops and regular Pocono driver Anthony Napolitano takes a seat. Looking for an aggressive steer and may have met a beatable field.

    $1.00 Late Pick 4

    1,3/4,5,6/1,6/3,7
    Total Bet=$24

Presque Isle Downs Pick 4 for Friday, Sept. 20

      September 20, 2024 | By Frank Carulli

      PRESQUE ISLE DOWNS PICK 4
      Friday, Sept. 20, 2024

In 15 runnings, the Presque Isle Masters Stakes has produced three Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint winners – Groupie Doll, Informed Decision and Musical Romance. Will the Grade 2 Masters serve as a springboard to champion status this year? Tune in Friday, Sept. 20, as a full field of 10 is scheduled to go post-ward in the track’s signature 6-1/2F event. And don’t forget to play the 50-cent Late Pick 4 that encompasses the feature race and three other large and competitive fields.

Horseplayers at 1/ST BET and Xpressbet be sure to opt into the 1 Million 1/ST Rewards Points Hit & Split promotion on this pick 4 sequence from PID.

PID 7th race (6:42 p.m. EST) -- Going 8-deep in the leadoff leg in a wide open $150,000 stakes at 1-1/16 miles. UNDERHILL’S TAB followed the move of repeat winner Recker Point ($301k) and gained ground late to finish third in a $50,000 optional claiming mile at Ellis Park. HE’S A MESS, runner-up in this race last year and three-time stakes-placed at Presque Isle, looped 4-wide on the turn but finished out of the money against the ground saving top pair of FOREVER SOUPER and ANAMNESTIC, who posted the top speed figures of their careers. FORTUEN SELLER was blocked through the second turn but escaped in time for a repeat victory and gets in light-weighted from the rail. RONDURE had a nightmare trip at 6F, bumping the winner repeatedly after he was trapped with run and angled out looking for a stretch opening. TWILIGHT DANCER seeks his fourth consecutive win going a route of ground, while K.C. CHIEF carried his speed to four consecutive wire-to-wire victories at Gulfstream Park for a high-percentage barn.

PID 8th race (7:09 p.m. EST) -- NOBLE JON ‘finished fast’ to notch his third consecutive win, now transitions back from the turf at a distance at which he’s 6-for-12. CROSSTOWN SHOOTOUT followed the 4-wide move into the stretch of the 2-1 winner and settled for second in a five-horse field when last seen two months ago. He has finished first or second in 22 of 35 starts on synthetic surfaces. GOING UP has tactical speed, a proven Presque Isle record and a trainer in the midst of a 24-for-89 run.

PID 9th race (7:36 p.m. EST) -- PANDORA’S GIFT capped a four-race win streak on synthetic tracks in England with a popular 6F stakes victory and, more recently, ran third in a Grade 3 turf sprint in Ireland. She defeated 40 rivals in her four wins and carried at least 128 pounds each time. ROSES FOR DEBRA returns to the synthetic track for the first time since 2022, when she won the first four starts of her career at Presque Isle. She returns to town as a multiple Grade 3-winning turf sprinter with a $637k bankroll for her first long sprint attempt in two years. Her stablemate, GAL IN A RUSH, rallied 5-wide from post 11 to lead at the stretch call in the Grade 3 Seaway on Woodbine’s synthetic track, but she drifted late and got caught at 7F. Our Pick 4 hopes will rest on these three runners in the $300,000 Presque Isle Masters.

PID 10th race (8:03 p.m. EST) -- NINJA STAR was fanned 4-wide into the stretch and missed in a photo finish on the cutback to 6F on a track that played extremely fast. He stretches back out and can make maximum use of his speed in this spot with first-time Lasix. MONEY IN MOTION’S steadily improving form includes two good route races on Presque Isle’s synthetic surface. He closed fast to miss by a head in a one-mile allowance won by pace controlling Class Photo, who set the pace for 6F in a follow-up turf stakes, but MONEY IN MOTION did benefit when the odds-on race favorite had a rough trip. He romped in a $25,000 claiming race last out at 1 mile and 70 yards, earning the top speed figure of his career. SPY NOVEL beat an average field of Pennsylvania breds and will be an underlay with Irad Ortiz Jr. summoned to ride. He should be forwardly placed throughout but offers little value, so take a chance and leave him off the ticket.

      Suggested 50-cent Ticket
      PID 7th Race: 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
      PID 8th Race: 2, 6, 7
      PID 9th Race: 2, 7, 8
      PID 10th Race: 5, 6
      Cost: $72

Scott Shapiro: 2-Day PA Pick 4 Analysis | Fri & Sat

        September 19, 2024 | By 1/ST BET

A big weekend of racing in Pennsylvania gets rolling on Friday afternoon at Presque Isle Downs and continues on Saturday where it is Pennsylvania Derby Day at Parx. As part of this, the two tracks have created a new wager called the Pennsylvania Pick 4. The wager kicks off with the Presque Isle Mile and Masters (G2) on Friday and continues on Saturday with the Cotillion (G1) and the PA Derby (G1). The wager has a 15% takeout with a fifty-cent minimum. Here are my thoughts:

Race 7, Friday, Presque Isle: $150k Presque Isle Mile
        Grade: B-
        Main Ticket: 8 Forever Souper
        Backups: None

Forecast: #8 Forever Souper is listed as the 2-1-morning line favorite coming in on a two-race winning streak for trainer Michael Trombetta. Last out in the $80k Whisman Memorial, the American Pharoah gelding got a great trip off an early battle and won convincingly. He should get another contentious pace to stalk off on Friday given the presence of #2 Fierce and Strong, #5 K.C. Chief, and #10 Franz Josef. This should make him very tough to beat to kick off the sequence.

Race 9, Friday, Presque Isle: Masters (G2)
        Grade: B
Main Ticket: 6 Nice as Pie; 1 Sunday Shoes
        Backups: None

Forecast: Trainer Christophe Clement holds a strong hand in this year’s Presque Isle Downs Masters with 9-5-favorite #2 Roses for Debra and 5-2-second choice #8 Gal in a Rush.

At one point, Roses for Debra was 8 for 9 but the Liam’s Map mare has lost 4 of her last 5 starts, including last month over the Saratoga turf where she finished an underwhelming third in the Smart N’ Fancy. Sure, she won her first four starts over this all-weather surface, but she won everything back then other than her lone dirt try, so I am not willing to bump her up for her strong record over this course. On the other hand, Gal in a Rush runs at Presque Isle for the initial time and despite losing by a neck in the Seaway (G3) comes into the Masters in the best form of her career. That said, she has lost 3 of her last 8 races by a length or less making her tough to trust to get the job done even if she puts forth her best effort. I will try to beat the Clement duo with a pair of fillies I got to see at Turfway Park.

#6 Nice as Pie was awesome over the all-weather this past winter for trainer Kelsey Danner. The Tapiture filly rattled off four consecutive wins, including a pair of stakes victories under jockey Adam Beschizza. She raced twice over the turf in May before heading to the sidelines. Now the Dede McGehee homebred gets back to her preferred surface and should be rolling late at a square price.
#1 Sunday Shoes has not progressed as much as I had hoped after rattling off a pair of impressive wins in 2023 to kick off her career for trainer Wesley Ward. Unlike most Ward runners, this $500k daughter of Pioneerof the Nile does not possess a lot of early speed, but she can sure finish. She will have to put forth a career best performance to best this bunch, but that is definitely within the range of outcomes. Hopefully, one of these two gals can run this group down and give us some much-needed separation in the sequence.

Race 12, Saturday, Parx: Cotillion (G1)
        Grade: B-
        Main Ticket: 6 Thorpedo Anna
        Backups: None

Forecast: It would be excellent if I had a great plan of attack for beating the odds-on favorite #6 Thorpedo Anna in this 1 1/16-mile event for 3YO fillies, but that is not the case. The Fast Anna filly has progressed perfectly throughout her 3YO campaign for trainer Kenny McPeek, so expecting regression in this spot seems unwise. She comes in off a head defeat in the Travers (G1) but lost absolutely nothing in defeat. In fact, one could easily argue she was best. Now, after showing she was as good as the boys of her crop, the $40k FTK October 2022 purchase takes on her own gender once again, which comes with some serious class relief. Look for Brian Hernandez, Jr. to play the break and find a prominent spot early. This should lead to her seventh career victory and set Thorpedo Anna up for her first shot against older runners in the Breeders’ Cup.

Race 13, Saturday, Parx: Pennsylvania Derby (G1)
        Grade: B-
Main Ticket: 5 Protective; 11 Stronghold
        Backups: 3 Dragoon Guard

Forecast: This year’s Pennsylvania Derby field is led by #7 Dragoon Guard. The well-bred Arrogate colt has really come into his own after being on the sidelines during most of the 2024 Road to the Kentucky Derby. The Juddmonte homebred has done his best though to make up for the late start to his 3YO campaign. He comes into the toughest task of his career on a four-race winning streak, including a pair of dominant front running efforts in the Indiana Derby (G3) and West Virginia Derby (G3).

Dragoon Guard is the deserving favorite, but will likely have to work hard throughout if he wants to earn his first Grade 1 score since the pace is likely to be contentious. Not only is there plenty of speed on paper, but I expect much more aggressive tactics from the riders of #2 Seize the Grey and #8 Unmatched Wisdom after unsuccessfully trying new tactics in the Travers (G1) last month. Dragoon Guard might just be better than these, but the rest of the runners that do their best running on the front end appear up against it assuming the racetrack is fair.

I am going to take a shot with a horse hopefully peaking at the right time in #5 Protective. The Repole Stable runner is just 1 for 7 and his lone win came against a four-horse field at 1 to 20 last out, but clearly Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher has always thought highly of this colt. The son of Medaglia d’Oro has the right running style to take advantage of the probable race shape and appears poised to fire his best shot. Hopefully, its good enough. I will also use the second choice #11 Stronghold. The son of Ghostzapper was defeated by Dragoon Guard when we saw him last in the Indiana Derby (G3) but got caught in tight and was shuffled back a bit early. With the move to an outside draw, I expect Antonio Fresu to sit comfortably off the pace and make his move on the far turn. This could end up being the perfect trip in this year’s PA Derby.

Good luck this weekend in PA!

          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #5
#1 Streets of War Willing to forgive him for the stakes try last time out after he blew the break, and he's not meeting a bunch of sharp speed winners like you often see in these 2-year-old stakes. Has a run for it from the inside at a price?
#7 The Boy's Warrior His debut was pretty sharp here last month, and I think there is enough upside off that to think he can be competitive with this group. Tactical trip today?
#10 Shadow Factor He was no threat when finishing third in Woodbine stakes company, and he should get a decent trip tracking the pace from out here. One of the ones.
Race Summary Doesn't feel like the toughest renewal of a race like this that we'll ever see here, so I'm hoping the Ohio invader on the inside can get a sharp break and control the tempo early on. He might be a touch cheap, but the race flow is interesting enough.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #7
#3 He's a Mess Hoping he's going to offer a touch better than the 9/2 ML price, but his better stuff is in the mix with the best in here, and he might get a fair pace to kick into.
#8 Forever Souper He can be tough again today while seeking a third straight score, and his versatile pace should have him in a really good spot right up on the splits.
#5 K. C. Chief He has some dangerous pace and rides a four-race winning streak, and it wouldn't be a total stunner to see him prove best of the pace today.
Race Summary He's a Mess has some tables to turn today, but I'm hoping that will help keep the price fair. His form isn't all that consistent overall, but he tends to show up over the local footing.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #9
#5 Heaven Rules She's probably way too cheap to win this, but she likes the local footing and is meeting what appears to be an almost shocking lack of pace. Price might be appealing enough to give her a spin up top.
#6 Nice as Pie She's back to her best game here while getting over synthetic footing, and I think she was probably best when just missing going a mile at Penn in May. Her turn of foot has been sensational at Turfway, and I assume she'll be closing fast again today in her first local start.
#2 Roses for Debra She's probably the one to beat while getting away from that tough customer who beat her twice in a row in New York. She has run well over this surface in the past, and she figures to be one of the many serious closing threats here.
Race Summary Heaven Rules is a reach, but I'm always more willing to take a shot with a horse who might be controlling pace with a chance to get brave. #7 Pandora's Gift is a tough read on paper -- take a look at her on the tote and track.

            Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #1
#4 PANCHO SLIPS AWAY (5-1) Works mirror barn’s success with debut runners, watch odds.
#3 NICOLE’S WILL (4-1) Dueled for 6F in pair of one-mile tests, wears blinkers for first time.
#6 DRUNKLE (9-5) Hit board in all three starts, blazed 4F in :45-1.5 last Friday.
Race Summary Trainer Kevin Rice won with four of his last 11 first-out MSW starters at Presque Isle – all at 5-1 or less. Add a pair of :59 and change breezes from the gate for PANCHO SLIPS AWAY and he gets the nod for a win and place bet.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #3
#1 TESSITURA (7-2) Overcame trouble and surged to win 5-1/2F debut, worked two bullets since then.
#4 KNIGHTOFCARAVAGGIO (6-1) Held on in strong 7-1/2F race, barn excels on turf-to-synthetic angle.
#7 FOXTASTIC (5-2) Loomed 3-wide in heavily-bet debut but couldn’t reach 5-1 winner as the favorite.
Race Summary Eight debut winners line up at 6-1/2F for the first time in the $50,000 Presque Isle Debutante Stakes. The added ground should be no problem for TESSITURA, who was unhurried at 5-1/2F and blocked with run before she ‘closed fast’ to win. She caught Two Scoops, who got the jump, led between calls in deep stretch and broke her maiden next out. Bet to win and place and play 1-4 and 1-7 exactas.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #5
#8 TAP THAT MAGIC (3-1) Bid 4-wide, evened out in stakes sprint behind two sharp next-out victors.
#9 MR. SQUEAKY WHEELS (4-1) Hard-ridden while 3- to 6-wide against unbeaten G-3 winner two back.
#6 HOMIE (5-1) Sped away from very weak field on Hawthorne turf but looked good doing it.
Race Summary TAP THAT MAGIC bid 4-wide but raced evenly in the stretch in a restricted 5-1/2F stakes race at Colonial Downs. But he gets upgraded on that performance after the runner-up went wire-to-wire in allowance company and the third-place finished romped in a follow-up stakes sprint with Beyer speed figures of 73 and 71, respectively. Bet on him to win and place in the $80,000 Fitz Dixon Jr. Memorial Juvenile Stakes.

                  # 3 HOW EYE ROLL 12/1
                  # 9 SAMURI 5/1
                  # 6 LAYER CAKE 5/2
HOW EYE ROLL is the strongest bet in this contest especially at 12/1. He ought to be given a shot given the very good speed figures. Jockey's recent return on investment figures make this gelding a strong wager. With Sigala uptop him, this gelding ought to be able to break out early in this contest. SAMURI - The winning percentage shown by horses entered by Gomezbarraza running at this distance are the most respectable in this field. Some very strong figs have been posted by this trainer's horses racing at this distance and surface. LAYER CAKE - Looks formidable for the conditions of this contest today, showing solid numbers in short races lately. Very good selection to take this race going in a short.

Presque Isle Downs - Race #8 - Post: 7:09pm - Optional Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $34,000 Class Rating: 95

                    Rating:

                    #2 CROSSTOWN SHOOTOUT (ML=4/1)
                    #5 KOTYLOS (ML=8/1)
                    #3 DIAMOND DUST (ML=3/1)
                    #6 NOBLE JON (ML=6/1)
#9 HOLD MY BEER BRO (ML=12/1)

CROSSTOWN SHOOTOUT - Last time around the track, ran the last quarter in less than 25 ticks. That indicates to me he can close well, and should be right there at the wire in today's contest. KOTYLOS - This gelding is in nice physical condition, having run a good race on Sep 4th, finishing first. DIAMOND DUST - I like this gelding a lot here. He shows a lot of consistency, finishing in the money frequently. A thoroughbred coming back this rapidly after a sharp effort is a good sign. Generally speaking, horses on Lasix for the first time should be considered. That's what we have here. NOBLE JON - I really like that recent outing on August 29th at Penn National where he finished first. HOLD MY BEER BRO - Hayes brings him right back. I advocate you stay with this hot gelding. Martinez and Hayes partnered up are a horse gambler's friend. Here is a true horse for the course. Loves the track here at Presque Isle Downs. Came home in speedy time last time out. A positive sign.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 GOING UP (ML=5/2), #1 SPIRITED SOL (ML=8/1),

GOING UP - Pace makes the race. Tough for this speedball to be able to deal with the suicidal fractions from the rest of this field. SPIRITED SOL - I'd like to see more preferred recent showings with oddsmaker's morning line of 8/1.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #2 CROSSTOWN SHOOTOUT to win. Have to have odds of at least 4/1 or better though
                    EXACTA WAGERS: 2 with [3,5,6,9]

                      Churchill Downs - Race #3 - Post: 1:43pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $50,000 Class Rating: 66

                      Rating:

                      #3 BEIJING BOSS (ML=3/1)

BEIJING BOSS - This colt's last rating garnered on June 19th is tops in last race Equibase speed figs. This animal brings in a lot of money per race. At the top in this affair.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #1 BORROWED TIME (ML=5/2), #2 BLAKE JAMES (ML=7/2), #6 COACH CLINT (ML=5/1),

BORROWED TIME - Just can't wager on this less than sharp equine. Didn't show me anything last time out or on July 27th. This mount ran a common speed rating last race out. He shouldn't improve and will likely get beat today running that rating. BLAKE JAMES - This colt hasn't had any positive efforts in sprint contests in the last 60 days. The speed figure last time around the track doesn't fit very well in this race when I look at the Equibase class figure of today's event. Mark this entrant as a likely underpriced equine. COACH CLINT - 5/1 is just too low of a reward to take on most any animal that has run poorly in back to back races. Registered a substandard speed rating in the last race in a Maiden Special race on August 3rd. Not probable to see an improved performance off of that rating.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - BEIJING BOSS - A pace examination shows this animal should have the pace to wire-to-wire this bunch.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #3 BEIJING BOSS to win if we can get at least 1/1 odds
                      EXACTA WAGERS: 3 with 6

                        # 2 BECAUSE 20/1
DOUDOUDOUWANADANCE looks very good to best this field. This filly obviously likes the distance, going 1 for 2 in her races as of late. She looks competitive in this spot and I expect will be on the lead or close at the halfway point. Could beat this group of horses given the 88 Equibase speed fig posted in her last outing. C W CHARM - Have to believe this horse will do well again today. Ran a solid last race. BECAUSE - Has been running quite well lately and should be on or close to the front end early on.
