Northfield Park begins the week with a 15-race card. The $1.00 Late Pick with a $10,000 guaranteed pool plus a low 12% takeout starts in Race 11, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selection below are based on a fast track.

Race 11 (9:40 PM EST)

6-American Fling (5/2)-The 4-year-old got on the engine at Yonkers facing better and faded down the lane to finish 3rd. Ships in, lands in a more comfortable spot and has a nose for the wire at Nfld. Has posted 4 win and 3 second place finishes in 16 races on this oval.
7-Sumomentsomwhere A (7/2)-Ships in from the Meadows and the Burke entry has the gate speed to be forwardly placed. Should enjoy the company, has won against better at YR, and has posted 1 win in 2 starts on the Hilltop.

Race 12 (10:02 PM EST)

3-MJ'S Valiant Tom (5/2)-This is a race devoid of form and any short price is tough to swallow. Does have Ronnie Wrenn between the pipes and that doesn't hurt. This pilot has one good move to use and needs to push the button at the right time.
7-Illuminatingsunset (10-1)-Started from the same post last time versus this kind and took the long way around. Did cash a 3rd place check and was off 19 days between starts. Needs the right trip but the price should be right to use.
9-Impressive View (4-1)-Had no shot in last leaving from post 8 and was hung the mile. Will look for Eric Miller to land in a decent seat off the gate and to not attract much betting interest. Will rely on improvement in the 3rd start on Lasix and there is no one to fear in this field.

Race 13 (10:24 PM EST)

2-Bernie (5/2)-Bernie has been on the shelf since 4-21 but did qualify with 2 sharp efforts here in September. This will be only the 12th start for this 8-year-old this year, so there have been issues. Could have his way with this group if dialed on high.
3-One Last Laugh (5-1)-Camera shy Schillaci entry does better when racing near the top of the stack. Aaron Merriman should land with the leaders off the gate and a pocket ride could lead to a picture.
8-Saulsbrook Genesis (4-1)-The post makes the price no doubt and makes this a much bigger challenge. Wrenn should have the pedal through the floorboard when the wings fold. Could be hard to beat if lands on the point without burning too much gas.

Race 14 (10:46 PM EST)

4-Nadia Seelster (4-1)-This mare has only 1 win in the last 30 starts and the picture came on 9-14 at Nfld. Will string along, doesn't meet a salty group, and looks like a double up possibility.
5-Ati Beach Youto It (3-1)-Makes the 2nd start for the Bill Rhoades barn and showed improvement in last. The 0-20 record is cause for pause but no one likes to win in this field. Comes right back, Merriman sticks, tries Lasix for the 2nd time and looks like a player at a short price.

Churchill Downs - Race #5

#3 Penei	Not totally sure how the move from a Colonial special weight transfers, but similar horses have gone 3-for-17 here over the last five years, so it's not an impossible shift. He hasn't been able to stay late, but a more modest route tempo might work in his favor in a spot without a ton of apparent pace on paper.
#4 Sunny Magic	Not a lot of enthusiasm about this guy for me today, but he makes some sense after a couple of decent midpack finishing efforts. Could be right up on the top choice throughout.
#5 Lord Balance	Get a look at him ahead of this on the track and tote, as this doesn't feel like an impossible spot for a fresh face to step up and land it.
Race Summary	Penei has a little bit of stretchout appeal in a race without a real standout on paper. #7 Righteous Star probably shows better, too.

Churchill Downs - Race #9

#5 Fort Warren	He draws well to find a spot to settle just behind a couple of quicker players who may force the issue from the outside, and I think a first-jump spot might be the right place in this race.
#3 Sahalat	Tactical speed should find a similar spot to the top choice, and he's got a really high ceiling that keeps him in the mix with his best. Mild worry about the fact that he took a step back next out the last time he ran a big one.
#8 Not Normal	Think he has a little bit of price appeal for a share of this one, as the recent form has come in longer races and in stakes company, so this spot might be a good fit for him if he can get back to his better stuff.
Race Summary	Fort Warren cuts back after fading at a mile last out, and I think he'll be in a great spot while always in the hunt. Fun race -- didn't even list capable #6 Gold Luck.

Churchill Downs - Race #10

#10 Shortstop	He's probably capable of something just a touch better than the last one, and he has the right kind of tactical pace to let his rider pick a spot just off the speed. Decent lean.
#6 Trust Issues	His dirt form from last year wasn't bad before he turned in a few midpack turf efforts, but I also didn't love the Fair Grounds race that much overall, and he was probably supposed to win it at 3/5. Obvious threat.
#7 Fly J's Funtastic	Price player might have some room to come forward today in his third start, and I think his first two might be just a bit better than they look at first glance. Interesting.
Race Summary	Shortstop feels playable with some upside after the first run back from the long break, and his best career race came at this local trip. Wouldn't be upset to get something a touch shorter than the 8/1 ML price.

I give the nod to SAINT IN THE CITY for this event especially at a such a nice price. The winning percentage shown by horses entered by Vanberg running at this distance are the most favorable in this group. Will more than likely be one of the early speedsters of the bunch going into the midpoint of the contest. Had one of the most favorable speed figures of this group in his last competition. THE PRINCE'S SPUR - His chances to score are much better today facing this easier field. With a nice Equibase class rating average of 102, has one of the best class advantages in this group. ONTHESTAGE - Quite good rider and handler combo winning 17 percent of their races working together. He has put up quite good figs under today's conditions and ought to fare well versus this group.

My choice for this race is HOOKED N GONE. Will make a strong outing versus this group. Must be carefully examined given the class of races run recently. He has been running solidly and the speed figs are among the best in this group of horses in this race. HES CHICKLESS - Should best this field here, showing decent numbers of late. Have to bet on this money-making rider and trainer twosome. UNRELENTLESS - Going in a short race gives this colt a strong shot. I would give my vote to this colt on the rider and trainer numbers alone.

NOT A LOST CAUSE - This horse didn't run well on the soft turf in her last race around the track at Woodbine. You should throw out that showing. Kerr should have her moving solid on the turn. Ran a speedy time for the last quarter on July 27th at Woodbine. Anything close in this event should get the job done. Filly will add blinkers to the equipment package today. That often leads to an improved performance.

MASTER ARAGORN - Not probable that this animal will finish better than she did last time when finishing third. Finished third in her most recent performance with a run-of-the-mill speed rating. When I look at today's class rating, it would take an improved performance to score after that in this group. MITOLE POWER - Awfully difficult to play this less than sharp equine when she hasn't been showing any signs of life of late. JUST ON TIME - This filly recorded a speed rating in her last affair which probably isn't good enough in today's event.

ALICIA'S WAY - Clouston has this mare in the right spot. Smart move here since this horse won a Starter Allowance race not too long ago. Looking at the past performances on all of these ponies, this is the only one to stalk. Worth a long hard look at this horse.

She shouldn't show signs of improvement and will likely suffer defeat in today's event running that fig.
