SA, California Crown Betting Bonanza On Tap

    September 25, 2024 | By 1/ST BET

Horseplayers will have an array of special wagering options this weekend coinciding with the first-ever California Crown Day on Saturday. Among the special added wagers are an All-Stakes Pick 5 on Saturday, a pair of two-day All-Stakes Daily Doubles, a two-day All-Stakes Pick 4 and two day All-Stakes Pick 6 linking stakes races on Saturday and Sunday. Each of the special wagers features a player-friendly 15 percent takeout rate.

The two-day, All-Stakes Daily Doubles are $5 minimum wagers. The first combines Saturday’s GII, $750,000 California Crown Eddie D with Sunday’s GII Santa Anita Sprint Championship. The second combines Saturday’s GI, $1 million California Crown with Sunday’s GII Zenyatta Stakes.

On California Crown Day Saturday, the All-Stakes Pick 5 consists of the Unzip Me (race 5), California Crown John Henry (race 7), California Crown Eddie D (race 8), California Crown (race 9) and City of Hope Mile (race 10).

The two-day, All Stakes Pick 6 is a $1 minimum wager. It includes Saturday’s Unzip Me, City of Hope Mile, California Crown John Henry Turf, California Crown Eddie D and California Crown with Sunday’s Santa Anita Sprint Championship and Zenyatta Stakes.

The two-day All Stakes Pick 4 is a $2 minimum wager. It comprises of the California Crown John Henry Turf and California Crown with Sunday’s Santa Anita Sprint Championship and Zenyatta.

GULFSTREAM, SANTA ANITA RETURN COAST-TO-COAST PICK 5

The popular $1 Coast-to-Coast Pick 5 featuring a player-friendly 15 percent takeout returns Saturday. The wager, which combines races from Santa Anita and Gulfstream Park, will be offered every Saturday and Sunday during Santa Anita’s Autumn Meet, which concludes Oct. 27. Saturday’s Coast-to-Coast Pick 5 starts at 2:08 p.m. PT with the ninth race from Gulfstream and follows with Gulfstream Race 11. The sequence also includes the California Crown John Henry Turf presented by 1/ST Bet, California Crown Eddie D and City of Hope Mile from Santa Anita.

$2 PICK SIX RETURNS WITH OPENING DAY FRIDAY

Santa Anita’s pick 6 will return this meeting to a $2 base minimum wager, which for decades was the staple of the track’s signature exotic wager. The pick 6 will be final 6 races on the card daily and challenges horseplayers to pick the winners of all 6 races. The $2 base replaces a short-lived experiment with a $1 base that failed to produce carryovers with regularity. Expect larger daily payouts and more frequent carryovers at the $2 level.

TRIO OF TOURNAMENTS FILL OPENING WEEKEND

Handicapping tournament players have daily options in store for Santa Anita. Friday's card offers a $300 California Crown Betting Challenge feeder. The $6,000 California Crown Betting Challenge highlights the weekend on Saturday. And Sunday's finale will be the $1,000 Breeders' Cup Betting Challenge Super Low Ratio Qualifier. #3
      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

      Churchill Downs - Race #4
#4 Riddler This one looks interesting enough on paper to prioritize checking him out in the paddock today. Barn is obviously capable, and my gut says this won't be the toughest special weight we're going to see this season.
#7 Perfect Magic He's the only one in here with any racing experience but I wouldn't be totally surprised to see him handle the main track after showing some pressing pace and folding in a pair of turf starts so far.
#9 Spiced Up Debuter is another fresh face with some appeal on paper, so take a look on the tote and track ahead of this one. Draws well to watch things unfold outside.
Race Summary Riddler heads this group on paper for me, and it's a fun race with a bunch of first-timers who are racing for capable teams.
      Churchill Downs - Race #7
#3 First Player Think he's going to hit hard with this crew while adding some ground, as he's got the speed to give himself a big jump on the grinding types and has shown plenty of interest in staying late. Worry he's a bit overbet, but I think he's tough to handle.
#5 Winston Wolf He shouldn't be too far off the top choice into the far turn, and I think this one has a high enough ceiling to land this if he can transfer that solid last run back over to the main track.
#6 Native Shaman Might be the longer, the better, for this guy with his plugging style, and he's coming out of a race I liked a little bit. Not out of the question.
Race Summary First Player gets the solid call for me in here with the right kind of style to manage the likely race flow, and his recent form is in line with what it should take to land this.
      Churchill Downs - Race #8
#6 Mo Rhodes The class drop might help his cause, as he was finishing with a little bit of energy against claiming company before getting a few tries with allowance groups for the new team. Might like this bunch.
#3 Game Keeper He checks a lot of boxes on recent class and company lines, but never too thrilled with a runner coming back on the drop off the claim. Better stuff obviously would do the trick, but how much do you trust him -- and at what price?
#11 God of Wine He has some tactical speed and occasionally stays on well enough late to think he could hang around for a piece of this, and I'm guessing he'll offer a bit better price after the mild Belterra run.
Race Summary Mo Rhodes has shown little since being claimed a couple starts back, but he almost has to be capable of something better, and I'm hoping this $30,000 crew will help him find it.

        #4
        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Charles Town - Race #1
#7 THUNDAR CLOUD (2-1) Bad behavior cost her a victory, deserves another chance.
#2 GRAN PATRONA (5-2) Steady rail bid after slow start, gets Bocachica.
#5 KEEP IT SAFE (10-1) Vied for 3F before deep-closing favorite passed by the field.
Race Summary A pair of Maiden Special Weight droppers should battle for the win. THUNDAR CLOUD angled 3-wide behind a pair of longshots turning for home, but she blew the turn, bore out, then surged late to finish second. All the while, GRAN PATRONA stumbled at the start, made steady rail progress and finished 1-1/4 lengths behind. Bet THUNDAR CLOUD to win and play a 2-7 exacta box.
        Charles Town - Race #2
#6 E.J.’S REVENGE (2-1) Raced evenly in fast heats, gets class relief, today’s Best Bet.
#2 YABBA DABBA DUDE (6-1) Hard duel off year layoff, shortens up, wears blinkers for first time.
#7 MISSIONSNINETYNINE (8-5) Led at stretch call if 5 of last 7 around two turns, shortens up tonight.
Race Summary E.J.’S REVENGE ‘flattened out’ in the stretch in his last three starts, but two of the races timed in :52-2/5, making him all the more formidable in this race for non-winners in a year. The barn won with class droppers twice recently, so bet to win and place and play a 6/2,7/ALL trifecta.
        Charles Town - Race #4
#3 ROYAL THUNDER (10-1) Live longshot with plenty of pace to rally into, use in all gimmicks.
#8 DRINKWITHTHESTARS (5-2) Dismissed at 2-1 or less in last eight starts, winning five times.
#5 FLY FLY AWAY (8-1) Dueled and held for 6/1-2-1 sprint record at Monmouth since June.
Race Summary ROYAL THUNDER benefited when several rivals were ‘jammed’ when he won through disqualification two starts back. Bet he at least has a passing gear in a speed-laden field and is too good to pass up at double-digit morning-line odds. Bet to win and place and play a 3-5-8 exacta box.

              # 2 LEOS WISH 5/1
I've got to go with GOOD TO BE PRINCE. Expect a much better attempt with the drop. Earnings per start in dirt sprint races is solid for this equine. This gelding with Cohen in the saddle makes him a key contender. MAN OF QUALITY - Is a definite contender - given the 61 speed fig from his most recent race. LEOS WISH - The class rating of today's contest is much lower than his last race.

                Woodbine - Race #1 - Post: 4:50pm - Claiming - 7.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $28,600 Class Rating: 74

                Rating:

                #1 ZODIAC BEACH (ML=8/1)
                #6 MRS. HOT SHOT (ML=7/2)

ZODIAC BEACH - When this jock and handler partner up you have to take a look. Nicholls and Hall have been great together. Last ran at Woodbine and finished sixth. Reviewing her PP lines, I see she was close at the finish line, within five of the winner. MRS. HOT SHOT - Searching through the pps for this race, I noted right away this animal's last effort was more than meets the eye. Showed good speed, fell back, and then ran evenly. This filly notched a strong speed fig of 76 in her last race. That figure should be good enough to prove victorious this time around. This horse has increased her speed ratings in each of the last 2 races. That kind of progress is worth taking notice of.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #7 FLIP FLOPPIN FAST (ML=2/1), #3 LEGALLY CHARITABLE (ML=3/1), #4 DYNA'S FLATTER (ML=6/1),

FLIP FLOPPIN FAST - Should have at least finished in the money in the last sixty days in a sprint event to be worth it at small odds in a sprint. LEGALLY CHARITABLE - Doubtful that the speed figure she recorded on September 5th will be good enough in this race. DYNA'S FLATTER - Tough to invest in any mount like this that didn't finish in the money after the long breather and comes right back.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #1 ZODIAC BEACH to win if you can get at least 2/1 odds

                  # 4 TEGWAR 10/1
                  # 2 HER HOLY NAME 9/2
I think BOOK'EM is a formidable choice. Had one of the best speed figures of this field in her last outing. With a nice Equibase class rating average of 80, has one of the strongest class advantages in this group of horses in this race. Boasts solid Equibase Speed Figures on average overall when compared with the rest of this group of horses in this race. TEGWAR - Boasts sound Equibase Speed Figs on average overall when compared with the rest of this group of animals. Could best this field based on the speed rating - 58 - of her last outing. HER HOLY NAME - Has some interesting angles which make this horse a bet. Has a sharp shot for this event if you like back class.

                    Rating:

                    #3 CLEMSON TIGER (ML=6/1)
                    #6 SECRETARY OF WAR (ML=3/1)

CLEMSON TIGER - I'm anticipating this beautiful animal to run a strong race in today's event. SECRETARY OF WAR - It looks like Severino had to know this gelding on Sep 10th when riding him for the initial time. Back on again today.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 WROTE IN STONE (ML=9/5), #2 VILLAGE PREACHER (ML=2/1), #5 BLOOD MOON (ML=8/1),

WROTE IN STONE - This gelding finished off the board on July 30th and wasn't close to victory last out either. VILLAGE PREACHER - This horse hasn't shown much life in the last couple of races. BLOOD MOON - I can't play this perpetual non-winner. Gets the assignment executed occasionally. This questionable contender hasn't been coming close at the wire recently.
