Jeremy Plonk: 12 Maryland Million Day Races in 12 Sentences

    October 10, 2024 | By Jeremy Plonk

Laurel Park hosts Saturday’s 39th Jim McKay Maryland Million, a full-card celebration of the state’s best Thoroughbreds, and we’ve got your express preview and picks for the dozen coming attractions.

Be sure to register for the $7,500 Exacta-Thon promotion. 1/ST BET and Xpressbet customers who cash exactas ($2 base minimum) on six or more different Laurel races split $5,000 in bonus cash, while the customer(s) who make the most winning Laurel Exacta bets ($2 base minimum) win or split an additional $2,500 bonus.

    Here goes (in chronological order):

    1. Laurel Race 1, 11:30 am ET | #8 Mosler’s Image (12-1 morning line) was third in the Maryland Million distaff turf starter handicap 2 years ago and is the tepid pick for a bounce-back effort off a poor local prep last time to top a capacity field of 12.

    2. Laurel Race 2, 12:00 pm ET | In the Maryland Million Nursery, sire Golden Lad looks for back-to-back winners in this race when key-race debut winner #3 Say Me True (5-2 ML) is the play to remain unbeaten despite giving away stakes experience to 4 of his 7 rivals.

    3. Laurel Race 3, 12:36 pm ET | A hot pace is projected in the Maryland Million Ladies, including defending champ Precious Avary, setting things up late for #1 Downtown Katie (5-2 ML) to make amends for last year’s disappointing run as the beaten favorite in a paceless edition.

    4. Laurel Race 4, 1:12 pm ET | #7 Bad Temper (15-1 ML) stunned the Maryland Million distaff dirt starter handicap at 35-1 last year, and was recently claimed back by trainer Gina Perri with a chance to rally again behind a hot pace.

    5. Laurel Race 5, 1:48 pm ET | The full-field Maryland Million turf starter handicap looks like a softer spot for Find Stakes runner-up #11 Hunter Joe (8-5 ML) than he’s accustomed, even if a bit inconsistent.

    6. Laurel Race 6, 2:25 pm ET | Several leading Maryland Million Lassie contenders have traded finishes and placings in Delaware, so the fresh face #12 Divine Works (6-1 ML) off a debut second as the favorite at Saratoga could be the right approach.

    7. Laurel Race 7, 3:01 pm ET | Respected veteran trainer Ned Allard brings #8 Sports Editor (3-1 ML) from his Delaware base and could control the Maryland Million Turf from start to finish as he’s done in 2 previous Laurel raids.

    8. Laurel Race 8, 3:36 pm ET | The 3-year-old #2 Celtic Contender (7-2 ML) has the look of a horse who could be a Maryland Million Sprint force for several years to come and should be tracking a contested pace.

    9. Laurel Race 9, 4:10 pm ET | Expect Maryland Million Turf Sprint defending champ Witty to come with his typical flying finish, but #3 Whenigettoheaven (3-1 ML) has more tactical speed, a better post and is in raging good form right now.

    10. Laurel Race 10, 4:40 pm ET | There looks to be an insurmountable amount of early speed in the 7-furlong Maryland Million Distaff, tilting in favor of a finisher like #1 Malibu Moonshine (8-1 ML), a winner on this card 2 years ago in the Juvenile Fillies.

    11. Laurel Race 11, 5:12 pm ET | Market Maven and Ain’t Da Beer Cold re-match after playing bumper cars late in last year’s Maryland Million Classic, but #4 Mosler Time (5-1 ML) rises into a stakes for the first time with a pair of stalk-and-pounce wins in both of his tries around 2 turns.

    12. Laurel Race 12, 5:44 pm ET | The Maryland Million dirt starter handicap closes the curtain, but not before high-percentage sprint trainer Tim Kreiser brings a pair of live ones from his Penn National base in #6 Sassy Lad (12-1 ML) and #9 Alvy (8-1 ML).

Scott Shapiro: Keeneland Late Pick 4 Analysis | Saturday, Oct. 12

      October 10, 2024 | By 1/ST BET

The second Saturday of the 2024 Keeneland Fall Meet is headlined by the $750,000 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup (G1). The nine-furlong affair for 3YO fillies drew a solid group of ten led by 5-2-morning line favorite #3 She Feels Pretty and a pair of European imports #5 Soprano and #10 Candala. The featured event goes as Race 8 making it part of Xpressbet and 1/ST BET’s Late Pick 4 Hit & Split available every day of the 17-day meet. Remember to register if you have not done so thus far. Here are my thoughts:

Grade Descriptions: Grade A=Highest degree of confidence; Grade B=Solid Play. Grade C=Least preferred or pass; Grade X=probable winner but likely at odds too short to play.

      Race 7:
      Grade: B-
Main Ticket: 1 Truthorconsequence; 6 Keepsake
      Backups: 11 Super Costly

Forecast: Little went right for #1 Truthorconsequence in her debut run at Churchill Downs last month for trainer Wayne Catalano. The Tom’s d’Etat filly broke a touch slow from her inside draw and then was caught in a very tricky spot in between rivals on the backstretch. This is exactly the trip you are not looking for with a first-time starter. Whether she gets a better one in this MSW event for 2YO fillies at 6-furlongs remains to be seen, but she attracts Irad Ortiz Jr. and is 15-1 on the morning line. #6 Keepsake is much more obvious. The Brad Cox trainee is a full-sister to Pastor T who won first out at Del Mar in August of ’23 and never raced again. She has worked well in preparation for her debut and attracts Flavien Prat.

#11 Super Costly did not run that well against lesser in her first start at Delaware Park, but I expect a move forward in this one at a big price. The Dialed In filly returns to the races for a barn that is 12 for 58 over the last five years with a $2.08 ROI with 2YO’s making their second career start. I will use the McLean Robertson runner as a backup.

Race 8: Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup (G1)
      Grade: B-
      Main Ticket: 5 Soprano
      Backups: 10 Candala

Forecast: I have been a big fan of #3 She Feels Pretty ever since I saw her debut at Ellis Park last summer. The Karakontie filly has a lot of talent and should have won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Filly Turf, but I am concerned she has not moved forward much as a 3YO. She has failed in back-to-back-races at odds-on and now takes on a serious group of fillies from across the globe. I am going to try to beat her with the two European imports.

Of the two, I prefer #5 Soprano who ships to the States in the best form of her career. She comes in off a strong third in the Coolmore America Justify Matron (G1) at odds of 14-1 and should relish her first voyage at the nine-furlong distance. I will also include #10 Candala. The French-bred daughter of Frankel has not won since April, but has been freshened up off a pair of third-place performances against Grade 2 foes this summer. She draws to the far outside, which is not ideal, but still makes a lot of sense in her first Stateside try.

      Race 9:
      Grade: B-
Main Ticket: 4 King Kumbalay; 11 Komorebino Omoide
Backups: 5 Parchment Party; 2 Elusive Target

Forecast: This second-level allowance event at two-turns goes through 9-5-morning line favorite #11 Komorebino Omoide. The Japanese-bred has not raced since a pair of third place finishes against Grade 3 competition in West Virginia in August. The son of California Chrome has run the fastest races to date, but has yet to do it on this circuit making him a bit tough to trust at a likely short price. #5 Parchment Party is also an interesting proposition. The Constitution colt showed a ton of talent coming from off the pace to win a pair of 1 1/16-mile races at Churchill Downs last year for Hall of Famer Bill Mott, but has not raced since. His ability is obvious, but will he just find his form after being off for over eleven months? Both are tough to toss, but also difficult to push all in with.

#4 King Kumbalay interests me in his second start off the bench for trainer Nacho Correas. The 6YO gelding has run some races good enough to win this over his 24-race career and shook off the rust last out in a common race in Louisville on September 15. With a better start, he should run well with Jose Ortiz returning to ride. #2 Elusive Target is a bit of a reach, but I like that trainer Mike Maker re-claimed him for $80k last out and moves him back to dirt right away. At 15-1, I will include as a backup.

      Race 10:
      Grade: C+
Main Ticket: 5 Blue Coast; 6 The Brigade; 8 Enterdadragon; 14 Look to the Cross
      Backups: None

Forecast: #5 Blue Coast is likely to take plenty of support in the finale after being bet down to favoritism in both of his first two starts for Brendan Walsh. The Omaha Beach colt ran faster in his two-turn debut than in his sprint versus allowance foes at Kentucky Downs, so I like the stretch out to eight-furlongs. That said, if he wants the lead, he will have to earn it given the presence of #1 Poster and #12 Curahee. I will include the Qatar Racing colt but also a few runners at bigger prices that hopefully can take advantage of the potential contentious first half-mile.

#6 The Brigade finished off the board in his first start in Kentucky for Mark Casse, but his effort two-back at Colonial Downs fits well with these. I will use the son of War of Will, as well #8 Enterdadragon who attracts Irad Ortiz Jr and moves back to the sod for his fifth career start and #14 Look to the Cross who looks to make it two in a row for Kenny McPeek and Brian Hernandez Jr.

Race of the Week: Sam Huff WV Breeders' Classic | Saturday

        October 9, 2024 | By Jeremy Plonk

        The Lead:
We're headlong into state-bred championship season at racetracks across America. Saturday's festivals at Laurel for the Maryland Million and Charles Town for the West Virginia Breeders' Classics are two of the oldest dating back to the 1980s. The $300,000 headliner at Charles Town is named in honor of NFL Hall of Famer and series founder Sam Huff, and challenges WV-breds around 3 turns and 1-1/8 miles. Post time is set for 10:32 pm ET as Race 8 on the all-stakes card.

        Field Depth:
Defending champion Coastal Mission has his sights on a potential Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile bid next month at Del Mar, leaving the door open at home for another horse to wear the crown. MUAD'DIB won the '21 and '22 WV Breeders' Classic and was runner-up here a year ago in this race. JUBAWITHATWIST is a multiple stakes winner locally. Those two have a strong class edge while ESPRESSO is also a 2024 stakes winner over the track.

        Pace:
JUBA'S NOTION, ESPRESSO, REMYS SHOWTIME and JUBAWITHATWIST line up in posts 4-7 together all win some intent on being on or near the lead over 1-1/8 miles. This should be a solid pace for a distance beyond the optimal trip for most of these. A finisher has a real chance to make a move on the far turn before the limited stretch.

        Our Eyes:
        Here are my horse-by-horse notes.

#1-I'M THE MONEY MAN: Three-time allowance winner this year will appreciate the distance and save ground for a late run. A cut below the top couple, but certainly in with an exotics shot.

#2-LIEUTENANT BROWN: First try at the distance for former claimer who was flat late over 1-1/16 miles in a trio of tries last winter. No outward reason to recommend vs. tougher going longer.

#3-MUAD'DIB: 7-year-old was once the king of this oval, and his 16-for-26 local record still holds a ton of clout. Judiciously and similarly campaigned the past 2 years to aim for this big check at season's end. Trainer Jeff Runco curiously has A-rider Arnaldo Bocachica named to stablemate RUNALDO, perhaps tipping his hand.

#4-JUBA'S NOTION: Third on Breeders' Classics night last year when competing with 3-year-olds on the undercard, he's 0-8 this year and faded at a big price vs. some of these in the Frank Gall Memorial. Pace, the retreat likely.

#5-ESPRESSO: Wire-to-wire winner in April's local Confucius Say Stakes over 7 furlongs, but has raced only once since and it was a disastrous ninth in a July allowance. He's never run this far and has no foundation for the distance assignment. Tough ask.

#6-REMYS SHOWTIME: Claimed for $15,00 in February, he's 0-4 for the new connections since. Admirable 35-57 in the money but a deserved longshot while making only his second lifetime stakes appearance.

#7-JUBAWITHATWIST: Odds-on favorite in the morning line boasts a sparkling 11: 8-2-0 record at Charles Town, the only real 'down' race a fourth-place finish last time out in the $500,000 Robert R. Hilton Memorial on Charles Town Classics Night. That open company race featured 1-2-3 finishers who were major stakes performers at Oaklawn, Gulfstream and Santa Anita. The questions are distance, he's only raced once beyond 7 furlongs, and taking on older stakes horses for the first time as a 3-year-old.

#8-RUNALDO: 4-year-old made a massive leap forward last time with a career-best effort over 7 furlongs, prompting perennial WV Breeders' Classics training dynamo Jeff Runco to give him his first stakes chance. His 3 prior wins were all in 4-1/2 furlong dashes, so distance is an obvious question as well as taking on stakes horses the first time. By Creative Cause out of a French Deputy mare, there's at least a mile in the pedigree and perhaps the configuration of the track and turns can carry him the extra furlong. Arnaldo Bocachica riding him over Muad'dib intrigues.

#9-LATE IN THE GAME: Third in this race last year at 12-1, he snapped an 8-race losing skid last out in a late-running allowance score. His 3-turn races at Charles Town are rock-solid and a 19-for-34 mark in the exacta locally earns respect. Ronald Sigler trains he and I'm The Money Man, and moves Denis Araujo to the stablemate.

#10-SARGENT KOBE: Bottom-end claimer last won in May and last ran beyond 7 furlongs in January. Tall order while likely to lose ground.

ALSO-ELIGIBLES: SUMMONING DENIS, JUNGLE BEAST, BAD LINEAGE and MOON FALL all would offer prices if able to draw into the field, though JUNGLE BEAST clearly looks strongest of that group even if off form in 2024.

        Most Certain Exotics Contender:
MUAD'DIB has never missed the superfecta in 8 starts at the distance and is a 2-time winner of this race.

        Best Longshot Exotics Contender:
I'M THE MONEY MAN at 15-1 morning line is inconsistent, but his late effort could get a piece when others give way.

        Sending it in ($100 bankroll):
In a $300K race, let's follow the money and the jockeys. $90 win RUNALDO. $10 exacta RUNALDO over I'M THE MONEY MAN.

Jeff Siegel's What You Need to Know - Santa Anita - 10/12/24

Santa Anita 5th Race – Post: 3:00 PT. Degree of confidence: A-
Top Selection/Prime Play: 3-Eye On Ry
          Other Contenders:
          7-Old Pal

Forecast: Eye On Ry is lightly raced and rapidly improving. The son of Malibu Moon earned by far his career top speed figure in a sizzling one mile turf score at Del Mar last time out and a repeat of that effort today should be more than good enough for a repeat win despite the one level raise in class. The R. Ellis-trained gelding possesses excellent tactical speed to keep him free of trouble and has shown the versatility to win on the front end or from off the pace, so V. Espinoza can play the break and then choose his strategy. He’ll offer plenty of wagering value in the win pool and in the various exotics at or near his morning line of 2-1.

          Other Contenders
          : none.

Forecast: Magnify was given a race sprinting in his debut but then left that form far behind with a sharp runner-up effort in his second start and his first around two turns. The B. Baffert-trained 3-year-old finished quite willingly to be second while improving his Beyer speed figure by no less than 52 points, and after a sensational recent workout last Saturday (a bullet five furlongs in :59.3h, fastest of 67 for the distance), the son of Justify looks primed to step forward again. A colt with stakes potential, he’s a logical pick to graduate today at what we expect to be a relatively short price.

Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park All-Stakes Pick 4

            October 12, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia

Northfield Park has a 15-race card loaded with Ohio Sires Stakes Championships. The All-Stakes Pick 4 with a $20,000 guaranteed pool starts in Race 8. The sequence has a low 12% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

            Race 8 (8:34 PM EST)

4-Sugar Instead (9/5)-The Virgil Morgan 2-year-old is a 11 for 11 this year and has a perfect 4 for 4 record at Nfld. She is a cut above the rest, and barring a miscue, Brett Miller should be posing after the race.

            Race 9 (8:56 PM EST)

5-Sesaide Diva (9/5)-The Ron Burke filly is a nice one and if she gets the top without much strain it could be all over. With $300k on the line, those that don't usually gun out could be doing so. If the start doesn't go smoothly an upset could happen and will use a couple of others just in case.
6-No Foolin April (5-1)-Dexter Dunn will look to work a cozy journey, just like what happened on 9-7 at ScD. Could pop at a square price with an efficient close-up trip.
7-Wasted On You (4-1)-The post helps the price, and this is another who could make some noise with a smooth steer. Has won 4 of 11 this year and has had excuses for a couple of losses. May need things to fall into place for a picture but looks like a live gimmick play.

            Race 10 (9:18 PM EST)

2-Spaaaanzano (9/5)-Comes in off a gate to wire score at Dela and most likely Aaron Merriman will look to follow the same game plan tonight. Should be large and in-charge once the wings fold and the race will go through the Chris Beaver trainee.

            Race 11 (9:40 PM EST)

1-Janelle Granny (6/5)-Doesn't have huge gate speed but Dunn will get away on top or close to it. Granny can provide an extra gear and has a pilot who will know how to use it.
5-Clever Cody (10-1)-Will toss the last race at Wbsb, my take is that was used as a needed start. The connections were pointing to this contest and Merriman will be aggressive off the gate. Needs a trip, but tries hard and it wouldn't be a shock if lands in the pocket or on the point off the gate.
6-Hundred Dollar Man (6-1)-Should offer a price and if the fraction are sizzling, the Lather Up 3-year-old could be in the hunt at the wire. Montrell Teague could finish best of all off a stalking trip.

            $2.00 All-Stakes Pick 4

            4/5,6,7/2/1,5,6
            Total Bet=$18

              Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

              Keeneland - Race #5
#11 Zap D'Etat Really expected better from him last out when trying the main track, but he never showed anything that day and now gets back to the turf where he has already turned in a couple quality Ellis Park efforts. In the mix at a midrange price?
#4 Lucky Mischief He's heading in the right direction through three starts and didn't miss by a whole lot at Kentucky Downs last out. Something similar to that run probably makes him tough today.
#5 Blue Chair Baby He can be a player for a top team, but I'm not sure the price is going to be all that appealing given the flat debut run. Obvious room to improve.
Race Summary Zap D'Etat has a good bit of room to bounce back today on the turf, and the price should be OK as he gets back to what is clearly his preferred footing right now.
              Keeneland - Race #8
#1 Pin Up Betty Think she has a little bit of appeal at what should be a decent price off the modest run at Kentucky Downs last out, but she seems capable of something better and might get a great trip while tucked inside just behind the splits.
#4 Waves of Mischief She's another midrange price player who might get a decent run of things while racing near the top in a race without a ton of speed. Not far off the better ones in here.
#3 She Feels Pretty Tactical speed should find a good spot and has never run a bad one. She's obviously got the class and talent to score here, I just worry the price will get short in what feels like a competitive race.
Race Summary Haven't even said a word about a couple capable Chad Brown runners and two Euros who seem in line with this group. Take a look at them and trust your gut in this one -- could see it going a number of ways.
              Keeneland - Race #10
#4 Coal Battle He was not a serious threat last out when trying winners for the first time off the Evangeline debut score, but he ran way better than his 88/1 price suggested he might, and it wouldn't be a shock to see him prove competitive with this group at an OK price.
#11 Lovely Regalo Think he should be on some of the deeper plays, as he woke up on the turf last out at 45/1 and might outrun his price again today. Tactical enough to overcome the draw.
#1 Poster Nothing wrong with the debut score, and there is probably some reasonable upside in this second career start. He'll need to work out a trip with a little pace from the fence, but we probably haven't seen his best yet.
Race Summary Coal Battle ran on OK in stakes company last out, and he's probably not a bad fit with this allowance group. Could see this one being interesting enough on the tote board -- lots of lightly raced players who still have turf upside.

                Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

                Laurel Park - Race #1
#3 COVER THE SPREAD (4-1) Tries to upstage a pair of near misses on the grass in longer route race.
#13 MOMMA’S LINO (5-1) Rough trip in same spot as beaten favorite, moves from rail to post 13.
#10 GLOSSAMER (15-1) Numbers and price are solid, but she’s battling bout with seconditis lately.
Race Summary COVER THE SPREAD rallied into photo-finish view in his two long-distance turf tests, once into a slow pace, the other while being ‘held up several times.’ Ness-trained runners often improve sharply in their second start off the claim. Bet to win and place and play a 3-10-13 exacta box.
                Laurel Park - Race #4
#4 JUNIPER JUICE (3-1) Visually impressive in allowance romp, took over when asked for run.
#8 ACTIVE (9-5) Improving 3yo rallied 4-wide, finished second behind the troubled allowance winner.
#1 DOWNTOWN KATIE (5-2) Beaten fave in this race last year arrives off stakes-placed showing.
Race Summary JUNIPER JUICE, under a snug hold tracking the free-running and fleet-footed favorite, was given her cue nearing the stretch, opened a commanding lead and held safe the closers. The 3-year-old could be sitting on another big effort in the Maryland Million Ladies with more ground to cover on the Laurel Park lawn. Bet to win and place and play 4-1 and 4-8 exactas.
                Laurel Park - Race #7
#5 SKY’S NOT FALLING (4- Nearing a half-million in earnings in Maryland Million Turf route.
#8 SPORTS EDITOR (3-1) Three wire-to-wire wins, led until late in 1-1/2-mile turf stakes, takes catching.
#7 CRABS N BEER (5-2) Beaten fave in this race last year has maintained consistent form since.
Race Summary SKY’S NOT FALLING has tactical speed, triple-digit Beyer speed figures in his last four starts at one mile and beyond and a 26/7-6-2 turf record, good for a $421k bankroll. He won’t race with Lasix in the $150,000 Maryland Million Turf but he gets the nod, nonetheless, for a win and place wager. Also play a 5,8/5,7,8/ALL trifecta.

                      Meadowlands - Race #4 - Post: 8:24pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $17,000 Class Rating: 83

                      Rating:

                      #12 MORETHANICANHANDLE (ML=10/1)

TIO TONY - A win pct the likes of what Martinez and Preciado have achieved together is terrific. On board this entrant on Sep 28th and Martinez is yet again in the irons today. Forgive the out of the money finish on the off track last time out. On a fast track, has a shot right here. IMPULSIVE SPENDING - This gelding gets a weight break of -7 lbs from last race. Could make the difference in this field. MORETHANICANHANDLE - This rider/trainer duo has been producing a very profitable ROI, right at +26. This front-runner should profit from this contest's shorter trip.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #9 SOCIAL ACCEPTANCE (ML=7/2), #7 WHO KNOWS (ML=4/1), #6 SKELLIG ISLAND (ML=9/2),

SOCIAL ACCEPTANCE - In the last race this entrant finished sixth. Doesn't show much potential for his chances today. WHO KNOWS - Hard to play any horse to turn things around if there is no reward to taking the chance. Somewhat easily forgotten speed fig last out at Delaware Park at 5 furlongs. Don't feel this mount will improve too much today. SKELLIG ISLAND - This gelding hasn't been showing me anything positive in the last two outings.

                        # 6 JOURNEYMAN 7/2
I like IRONSTONE here. Ought to be given a shot for this race if only for the respectable Equibase speed fig posted in the last contest. Has a strong shot in this contest if you like back class. With a formidable 106 average Equibase Speed Figure at the distance, seems well suited for today's race. TWIN CITY - Will probably be one of the early speedsters of the bunch going into the halfway point of the competition. His earnings per start in turf route races alone makes you take a look at him. JOURNEYMAN - Garnered a very strong Equibase Speed Figure last time out.

PEARL OF THE SEA has a respectable shot to take this race. Appears to be the type to be helped on Lasix here. Navarro has been scorching the last month, winning at a nifty 16 percent rate. Should expect a much better effort with the drop. MATTNESS STAR - This racer enters today's race with second time Lasix. Look for a solid attempt with the class drop. REINA ESTER - This group is much easier than the last one she was up against. Recent figs for the jockey - 19 win percent - make this filly stand out in this group.

                            Rating:

                            #4 ONYX TEN (ML=9/2)

MALIBU HOOCH - This rider and conditioner have a high win pct together. I like that recent race on September 15th at Laurel where she ran third. ONYX TEN - That last drill tells me this filly is set for a top effort.

                            Vulnerable Contenders: #13 GREAT ANDREI (ML=5/2), #12 DIVINE WORKS (ML=6/1), #7 BISCUITWITHTHEBOSS (ML=6/1),

GREAT ANDREI - Hasn't raced or had any works since September 11th. Not much value on this chalk horse. DIVINE WORKS - Finished second in her most recent race with a quite unimpressive speed rating. When I look at today's class rating, it would take an improved performance to score after that in this field. BISCUITWITHTHEBOSS - Hasn't hit the board in any short distance races recently. Unlikely to see her doing it this time around either. Notched a common speed figure last out in a $62,500 Optional Claiming race on Sep 15th. Not likely to see an improved performance off of that rating.
