Al Cimaglia: Meadowlands Early Pick 4 Analysis

    October 25, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia

The Breeders Crown Championships for 2-year-olds are the headliners on the 14-race Meadowlands card. The 0.50 Early Pick 4 starts in Race 6. The sequence has a $100,000 guaranteed pool with a 15% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Don't forget to register for the Bet $100 Get $10 Back Promo on Breeders Crown weekend.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 6 8:25 PM EST)

1-Sound Judgement (5-1)-Winner of 2 straight will need her best. Has good gate speed which helped to get a cozy trip in the last 2 races. Should offer a solid price, could benefit from a fast pace and an efficient journey.
3-Chapagne Problems (5/2)-Likes to race at the top of the stack and should be there when the wings fold. The Takter trainee has banked over $360k and the race will likely go through this gal.
6-Luna Lovegood (3-1)-Luna drew off by over 5 lengths in its Elim and stopped the clock in a snappy 152.2. Dexter Dunn could land in the pocket and then roll by late in the mile.

    Race 7 (8:50 PM EST)

6-The Last Martini (3-1)-Rolled the back-half in 54.2 last week and paid off at 9/2. This is a nice filly that has hit the board in 8 of 9 with 4 pictures. Last week was impressive because that isn't the typical plan, usually is racing with the leaders. Doug McNair has options and should have the Bako pupil in striking range at the top of the lane.
9-Miki And Minnie (7/2)-Came a good 3rd off a very taxing trip last week. Dunn left from the 8-hole and was hung the mile. The Chris Ryder pupil draws poorly again and that will help the price. Will respect chances, could be heard from at the wire with a smooth trip.

    Race 8 (9:15 PM EST)

3-Maximus Mearas S (3-1)-Scott Zeron provided a sharp drive, took the short way around and posed for a picture. The Wallin 2-year-old is a perfect 2 for 2 at M1 and should get a similar trip tonight.
4-Emoticon Legacy (7/2)-Louis Roy left from post 7, landed in the pocket and rolled home to cash the top check. This won't be as easy but looks like a player and this post draw could make a difference. The Blais trainee is in a spot to get a ground saving journey. Has been around the money all year and may finally capture a big purse.

    Race 9 (9:40 PM EST)

3-My Sweet Lily (3-1)-Will toss the last start, got a rough trip and was in too tough. Facing some others who were in tall cotton last week too, but Dunn gets the nod this time and has won 2 of 3 at M1.
4-Simply Perfect (9/2)-This looks like a trip out candidate who could be overlooked at the windows. This is an on and off sort, who might be getting better and could make the most of an efficient trip.
8-Beach Rules (4-1)-Zeron steers, he knows well, and this is the 1st time for Lasix. Has been battling on smaller ovals and should fit well with this crew despite the post draw. Has been taking a lot of action, and that may not be the case tonight.

    0.50 Early Pick 4

    1,3,6/6,9/3,4/3,4,8
    Total Bet=$18

Jeff Siegel's What You Need to Know - Santa Anita - 10/25/24

      October 25, 2024

Jeff Siegel’s “What You Need to Know” – Santa Anita
      Friday Pick-6 Analysis/Wagering Strategies (races 4-9)

Fourth Race – Post: 2:30 PT. Degree of confidence: B
Main Ticket: 6-A Toast to Lanie; 7-Uffda
      Backups
      : 1-Shop Till You Drop.

Forecast: A Toast for Lanie flashed sharp speed to establish the pace, stayed on nicely through the lane but was simply second best in a similar affair at Del Mar in August. Freshened and with a steady, healthy work tab to tick her over nicely for this starter optional sprint for fillies the mares, the J. Mullins-trained daughter of Stay Thirsty improved her Beyer figure by 13 points off her maiden claiming debut win, and with another forward move today should be capable of handling this assignment. Uffda shows many positive factors in her chart. She lands the cozy outside post, exits a couple of tougher allowance races, shortens to a sprint, and returns to dirt, the surface she graduated over three runs back at Los Alamitos. Also, she’s highly competitive on numbers compared with our pick and is likely to offer better value on the tote. Shop Till You Drop can be tossed in as a backup. She’s slower on figures than the main ticket players but appears to be a progressive sort and goes for the always powerful J. Hernandez/R. Baltas team. At the very least she can be reasonable competitive.

      __________________________________________________ ____________________________

Fifth Race – Post: 3:00 PT. Degree of confidence: C+
      Main Ticket: 3-Its a Cinch;
      4-Bazooka Charlie; 9-No Poking Around
      Backups: none.

Forecast: Here’s a “must spread” affair for state-bred maiden juveniles sprinting on turf. We’ll go three-deep but if you can afford to include a few more, go right ahead. Its a Cinch ran okay over this course and distance in a similar affair earlier this month, flashing good speed to lead the way into the lane before giving way grudgingly to wind up third in a better than average race for the level. With only a small forward move, he could stick it out the entire trip today. Bazooka Charlie is a first timer who has been prepared at Los Alamitos out of view from the xbtv.com camera crew. The workout times look fairly decent, so if we take them at face value the son of Grazen should be a solid fit. No Poking Around is bred for turf (Sir Prancealot) and appeared to be going well in a recent breeze that was hardly visible in the dark. The barn has poor stats with first timer starters but in an open fray he’s worth including on your ticket.

      __________________________________________________ ____________________________
Sixth Race – Post: 3:30 PT. Degree of confidence: C+
      Main Ticket: 6-Just Deal
      Backups
      : 7-Glorious Oscar; 4-Cardinal Spirit

Forecast: We know nothing specific about Just Deal – we haven’t seen him breeze because he’s been stabled at Los Alamitos – but in a bottom-rung maiden claimer for juveniles how good does he have to be? Purchased as a weanling for $85,000 and finally making it to the post almost two years later for $32,000, he’s obviously not well thought of by the B. Baffert barn, but the works look okay on paper, and top rider J. Hernandez takes the mount, so we’re expecting that he’ll be good enough to outrun this group at a no-value price. Glorious Oscar was beaten a mile in his debut at Del Mar, but he did flash a bit of early speed facing tougher and has since been gelded, so there’s hope. Prior to his debut, the son of Oscar Performance trained like he had a bit of talent; hopefully he can show some of it today. He’ll be on a backup ticket, as will Cardinal Spirit, slow on numbers but a runner-up at this level at Del Mar and likely to be part of the early pace, at the very least.

      __________________________________________________ ____________________________

Seventh Race – Post: 4:00 PT. Degree of confidence: B+
      Main Ticket: 8-Kelly’s Out (Ire)
      Backups
      : 1-Bottle Rocket (Fr); 3-Cameron Slough.

Forecast: We’re not crazy about the extreme outside draw in the local doglegged 10 furlong turf routes, but if Kelly’s Our (Ire) runs as well today as she did when beating restricted $32,000 foes at Del Mar last time out for her prior connections she should be able to repeat on the raise for new trainer K. Bainum, though that trainer has just middling stats with the first-off-the-claim angle. Let’s hope the Irish-bred import can take back, drop over, and get cover for the first mile or so and then find room and quicken like she did last time. She’ll be the main push on our key ticket, but backup players may want to protect with Bottle Rocket (Fr.) and Cameron Slough. The former is favorably drawn, and although a bit one paced she’ll certain enjoy today’s extra quarter mile. The latter beat little in a starter $50,000 affair at Del Mar, but she did it the right way and earned a number that gives her a look.

      __________________________________________________ ____________________________
Eighth Race – Post: 4:30 PT. Degree of confidence: B
      Main Ticket: 2-Naida
      ; 9-Safa
      Backups: 7-Neezer Dalton; 8-Mirinda.

Forecast: Naida launches a comeback and has trained like she’s fit and ready for a barn that has strong stats with layoff runners. She was game in her debut victory last year at Del Mar in a fairly decent maiden state-bred dash, and our assumption is she returns bigger, faster, and likely better thanks to an additional year of maturity. With J. Hernandez taking the call, the daughter of He Be Fire N Ice has the look of a live item. Safa is a seasoned daughter of Grazen who has never been worse than second in four career starts over the Santa Anita main track. She lacks gate quickness and will need to save some ground from her outside draw, but on pure figures she’s strictly the one to beat. Neezer Dalton can be tossed in as a backup; her numbers have been all over the map but she should at least hit the board, while Mirinda continues to looks sensational in the morning, but after a jaw dropping debut win 13 months ago the daughter of Mitole can’t seem to perform under pressure in the afternoon. The talent is there, or at least it used to be.

      __________________________________________________ ____________________________
Ninth Race – Post: 5:00 PT. Degree of confidence: B+
      Main Ticket: 6-Pondicherry; 10-Certitude
      Backups:
      8-Flight to Quality.

Forecast: Pondicherry is an intriguing first timer from the D. Blacker barn. We’ve seen her workout videos and she actually doesn’t appear to be half bad. With Bernstein on the bottom, she should handle grass and she moves like a decent athlete capable of winning against this group at what should be a decent price. Certitude is back sprinting and is likely to improve after almost a three month freshening and a disappointing run as the favorite over a mile at Del Mar. She was a maiden tackling winners that day but was bet down to favoritism due to the field’s lack of depth. She can win, but certainly doesn’t have to. Flight to Quality, away since last December, returns with Lasix, shows up in a seller, and could be a better type this time around. She's worth including in a secondary role.

Keeneland Pick 4 for Friday, Oct. 25

        October 25, 2024 | By Frank Carulli

        KEENELAND PICK 4
        Friday, October 25, 2024

Nobody said Keeneland’s Late Pick 4 would be easy to hit, but it remains highly rewarding for those who do. Fueled by several longshot winners the last two Fridays, the Pick 4 paid $4,300 and $2,878, respectively, for a 50-cent ticket. And those who participated in 1st Bet’s Hit and Split Promo shared in one million reward points if they had the winning combination. With 11 or 12 entrants scheduled to run in each race this Friday, Oct. 25, another blockbuster payout looms.

KEE 7th race (4:12 p.m. EST) -- A rapid-fire pace involving several of the favorites is all but assured in this turf allowance, bringing some closers into better view. NO WAY HUDSON rallied to lead at the stretch call in the Grade 3 Green Flash Handicap at Del Mar at 5F before three-time Grade 3 winner and favored Motorious rallied from far back to prevail. MID DAY IMAGE, a 13-time turf winner and $500k earner, offers better value, but the 8-year-old will have to step it up a notch in this field. HIGH FRONT set a :43-4/5 pace before tiring in the $150,000 Harvey Pack at Saratoga, but he’s versatile enough to revert to off-the-pace tactics in his second start off the Asmussen claim. Like JEAN VALJEAN the most among the speedballs. He blazed to three consecutive front-end victories by a combined 9-3/4 lengths on the grass with 95, 95 and 93 speed figures.
KEE 8th race (4:44 p.m. EST) -- LONG NECK PAULA, a debut winner in :51-2/5 at Churchill Downs, was 4- to 6-wide in the Schuylerville Stakes at Saratoga and ‘improved position’ to finish third behind The Queens M G, who came back to win the Grade 3 Adirondack by 9 lengths. Then the 2-year-old filly found gears as needed to win the Prairie Meadows Debutante by 7-1/2 lengths over GLEE, who followed with a 15-length minor stakes victory and draws post 2 in this field. DANCING MAGIC saved ground until the stretch, followed the move of the odds-on winner and finished a clear second with stalking tactics that could come in handy in today’s $200,000 Myrtlewood. TRUST FUND PHILLY sustained a 5-wide rally into the stretch to get past the favorite after the pace collapsed in her Maiden Special Weight debut victory.
KEE 9th race (5:16 p.m. EST) -- LES REYS, an eye-catching stakes winner in France two back, rallied into a soft pace and caught the 43-1 leader in the final sixteenth to win the Winter Memories Stakes at Aqueduct in her U.S. debut. She returns at the same distance in the featured Grade 2 Valley View. OPERA MUNDI arrives in North America for the high-percentage, new acquisition barn of trainer Brendan Walsh. She beat the boys in stakes company in France and could be sent from the rail off a solid series of 5F workouts in a field that lacks pace. POOLSIDE WITH SLIM was dead game in winning the Penn Oaks, a beaten favorite in her follow-up stakes try and a troubled fourth behind Les Reyes in the Winter Memories. (NOTE: If #16 Kehloe Beach draws into the race off the also-eligible list, include her on the Pick 4 ticket.)
KEE 10th race (5:48 p.m. EST) -- Trainer Brad Cox is 1-for-8 at the Keeneland with heavily-bet first-time starters. POINTS IS POINTS is sure to draw some attention. She is by Constitution, the 12th leading sire in 2024 by progeny earnings, and out of the dam Viva Vegas, a multiple graded stakes-placed router, albeit on the turf. PHANTASMICAL is a longshot worth using on the ticket. She returns from a 15-month layoff in a new barn. She was roughed up at the start and finished last in her debut, but the race produced three graded stakes winners – Aly’s Beach (G-1), Life Talk (G-2) and The Queens M G (G-3). ON COMMAND finished between two next-out winners in a turf-to-dirt mile two starts back, then she set the pace again and finished third in a double-key grass race at Kentucky Downs. HI’IAKA dueled from mid-stretch to the finish in a photo-finish setback on turf, but she topped her previous best Beyer speed figure by 21 points and shows a strong work tab on Keeneland’s synthetic track since then.

        Suggested 50-Cent Ticket
        KEE 7th Race: 6, 8, 9, 10
        KEE 8th Race: 5, 10, 12
        KEE 9th Race: 1, 2, 4 (Add #16 if in race)
        KEE 10th Race: 2, 4, 6, 9
        Cost: $72

          #5
          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

          Keeneland - Race #7
#5 Bad Beat Brian He showed a little bit of life last out after the flat run in May, and he has generally been in with better groups than he is going to find today. Some chance at an OK price.
#9 No Nay Hudson He's another who gets some class relief today after a modest run with better, and he should be in line for a great trip tracking the pace from close range.
#2 Our Last Chance He has run OK before in open company, so I'm hoping there's a chance his Iowa-bred form will transfer over to the turf here with some decent main-track pace that could serve him well.
Race Summary Bad Beat Brian might have just been better last year, but I think this is the kind of spot that gives him some chance to wake up at an OK price.
          Keeneland - Race #8
#12 Long Neck Paula Think she will get overlooked from the outside with some pace that might keep her in a great spot to hassle the other forward players drawn closer inside. Attacking trip gets her home?
#4 White Sands She caught a nice group at Del Mar when suffering her first career loss, but she's not overmatched with this group with her baseline effort. Race shape is a mild concern.
#10 Trust Fund Philly Nothing wrong with her debut score, and she should be able to find another good spot spying the splits from here. Wouldn't argue with anyone landing here, as she's obviously got some talent.
Race Summary Long Neck Paul has some midrange price appeal after bouncing back with an easy score at Prairie Meadows last out, and the draw gives her every chance to take the best of the pace battle.
          Keeneland - Race #9
#11 Nice as Pie Her turf starts have been decent enough, and I think she probably deserved to win the Penn Oaks a couple starts back. Mild concern about the race flow, but she's an honest finisher who should be good for another thrill today.
#2 Poolside With Slim She's the one who just stayed on to score in that aforementioned Penn Oaks, and that established baseline run has served her well in a couple starts since then while proving competitive with some of today's threats.
#1 Opera Mundi Get a look at her ahead of this, but it wouldn't be any surprise to see her make some noise in her first American start while racing for capable connections.
Race Summary Nice as Pie has a sharp turn of foot and exits a decent spot at Presque Isle. Let's see if she can drop over and save some ground before launching a late rally.

            Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

            Gulfstream Park - Race #1
#2 CHICA MUSIC (15-1) Pressed 4-wide and tired two back, couldn’t stay with 1-to-5 shot in latest.
#10 ZOYA’S FAITH (6-1) Finished ahead of ‘Chica’ after two months away, lures Vasquez.
#11 AWESOME EMPRESS (6-1) In range but lacked kick in routes, outside post the concern.
Race Summary CHICA MUSIC angled 5-wide for the stretch drive but finished evenly in a fast 5F sprint won by the 1-to-5 pace setter. She can factor at a big price in her third start at this claiming level. Bet to win and place and play a 2-10-11 exacta box.
            Gulfstream Park - Race #2
#6 MACKOR (8-5) Couldn’t stay with 1-to-5 winner but drops into ideal spot today.
#7 PARALEGAL (4-1) Good speed, gets class relief and second-time Lasix from outside post.
#4 DEVILMENT (7-2) Three photo-finish setbacks in six starts this year, cuts back from routes.
Race Summary MACKOR, an improved second to repeat winner Blue Spearman off the layoff two back, stepped into Florida-bred Maiden Special Weight company and ‘stayed on’ well to finish third. He’s the lone entrant with synthetic track experience sprinting and the barn is on an 8-32 run in maiden claimers. Bet to win and place and play 6-4 and 6-7 exactas.
            Gulfstream Park - Race #3
#3 CADRON SETTLEMENT (7-2) In top form, won off similar rest for hot trainer-jockey tandem.
#5 GRAND DANIEL (4-1) Outran his workouts in heavily-bet debut for 27-percent ‘repeat’ barn.
#9 PASCHAL MOON (2-1) Steady numbers, ran 1-2 in 5 of 11 starts against better in N.Y. this year.
Race Summary CADRON SETTLEMENT bumped with the favorite at the start, raced 4-wide and finished third to a pair of deep closers at 7F. He earned the top speed figure of his career and returns off a similar rest to when he broke his maiden. Bet to win and place and play a 3,5/3,5,9/ALL trifecta.

                  RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                  # 6 A TOAST TO LANIE 7/5
                  # 7 UFFDA 3/1
                  # 2 STELLAR CAP 8/1
A TOAST TO LANIE supports the bet in here. Looks very strong for the conditions of this contest today, showing solid figs in dirt sprint races recently. With one of the best riders in terms of gains at the window, don't count this filly out. I think having Gonzalez ride this filly is a smart move. UFFDA - Has decent Equibase Speed Figures and has to be considered for a wager in here. This animal is highly ranked this group in earnings per start at the distance/surface. STELLAR CAP - Put up a solid Equibase speed fig in the most recent race. Can run another good one in this affair. Is difficult not to consider given the company run in as of late.

                    Charles Town - Race #1 - Post: 7:00pm - Maiden Claiming - 4.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $10,800 Class Rating: 60

                    Rating:

                    #3 COOLKID (ML=5/2)
                    #4 NO BLUSHING HERE (ML=6/1)

COOLKID - I unquestionably see good things for this racer right here. NO BLUSHING HERE - Aboard this racer on Oct 3rd and Hiraldo is yet again in the irons this race. Only a bad break can keep this racer from having a chance. Loves the front, is starting from the inside in a sprint race, and we're on a tight track. You may want to ignore that last affair at Charles Town on a track listed as good where he finished outside the top 3. Should do well in this event under normal track conditions.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #1 DREW D'ORO (ML=3/5),

DREW D'ORO - This chalk horse ran on Sep 1st and hasn't had a drill after that.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #3 COOLKID to win if you can get at least 7/5 odds

                      # 9 OUR SHENANIGAN 3/1
MO PICS PLEASE looks to be a solid contender especially at a such a nice price. Should be given a shot here on the basis of the figures in the speed department alone. Has been racing in the most competitive company of the group lately. This equine should be played at the expected big odds. OUR SHENANIGAN - I would think about this filly on the rider and trainer numbers alone.

                        Pleasanton - Race #3 - Post: 1:46pm - Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $22,500 Class Rating: 88

                        Rating:

                        #5 BROADWAY TIGER (ML=6/1)
                        #1 HONORABLE GAL (ML=4/1)

BROADWAY TIGER - This filly is very reliable, frequently finishing in the money. Have to like the way Badilla has raced this filly back into shape off the layoff. Animal is well spotted in this sprint and I think she'll run well today. HONORABLE GAL - Gomez is back up for another contest today after racing atop this animal for the first time on August 16th and ought to know the ropes to this one a little better. Just look at her recent speed rating, 86. That one fits in this bunch. Ran a fast time for the last quarter on August 16th at Santa Rosa. Anything close right here should get the job done.

                        Vulnerable Contenders: #3 QUEEN MOLOTOV (ML=8/5), #2 TAMANTARI (ML=5/2), #4 TWILIGHT EMPIRE (ML=3/1),

QUEEN MOLOTOV - Doesn't appear to be in a strong situation this time around. TAMANTARI - Tough to take this vulnerable equine at these odds after the finish position (third) in the last race. TWILIGHT EMPIRE - Not easy to wager on this mount in today's event. Make her show you something in a sprint race before you play her in a race of 5 1/2 furlongs. Didn't end up on the board on October 5th after the very long layoff. Be doubtful of this one in today's event. This mare ran her top speed figure in some time on the dirt in a sprint affair. There may be a strong performance bounce today.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #5 BROADWAY TIGER on the win end if we get at least 5/2 odds
                        EXACTA WAGERS: Box [1,5]
                        TRIFECTA WAGERS: Pass
