Jeff Siegel's What You Need to Know - Santa Anita - 10/26/2004

      October 26, 2024

Jeff Siegel’s “What You Need to Know”
      Santa Anita

      __________________________________________________ ____________________________
Santa Anita 5th Race – Post: 3:00 PT. Degree of confidence: B+
      Top Selection/Prime Play: 3-Dairago (Fr)
      Backups
      : 4-Rostovsky; 1-Middleburg

Forecast: In his U.S. debut and just his second career start, Dairago (Fr) lost position soon after the start, moved with range on the turn, then was unable to follow through and wound up fourth, beaten less than three lengths, while appearing to be in dire need of the outing. The R. Hess, Jr.-trained sophomore seems certain to be a much tighter colt today, so the European invader can be expected to produce a significant forward move in this maiden nine furlong grass affair for older horses. In his debut last spring in Ireland, he produced a solid effort when second of 13 in a better than average race for maidens, so the son of City Light likely has a higher ceiling than most of the others in this lineup. At 3-1 on the morning line, he’s an aggressive play in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics.

      __________________________________________________ ____________________________
Santa Anita – 9th race - Post: 5:00 PT. Degree of confidence: B+
      Top Selection/Prime Play: 7-Special Flower
      Other Contenders
      none.

Forecast: Special Flower is back sprinting where she belongs, and after scoring handsomely in her debut sprinting over the local lawn in her debut last spring the daughter of Will Take Charge should be capable of returning to winning form in this first level allowance Hillside grass affair. The five year old daughter of Will Take Charge wants patient handling and is likely to settle early and accelerate in the closing stages under new pilot A. Fresu. The D. O’Neill-trained mare is solid on numbers, which are likely to continue to rise, so with good racing luck and some help up front should offer good wagering value at or near her morning line of 3-1.

Al Cimaglia: Meadowlands Breeders Crown Early Pick 4 Analysis

        October 26, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia

        XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
The Meadowlands finishes Breeders Crown weekend with a 14-race card. The Breeders Crown Championship begins in Race 4 and goes through Race 11. The 0.50 Early Pick 4 with a $100,000 guaranteed pool starts in Race 6. The sequence has a 15% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Don't forget to register for the Bet $100 Get $10 Back Promo on Breeders Crown weekend.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

        Race 6 (8:25 PM EST)

5-Caviart Belle (5-1)-Looking to fade the 2-1 program chalk My Girl EJ and hope to start off with a solid price. Raced inside in the 1st start on Lasix and came a close 4th. The wrapper comes off tonight and the Nancy Takter trainee could come off cover and catch the leaders. Did pace the 2nd half in a snappy in 53.4 and Yannick Gingras should be in striking range to take a picture. Does good work at M1 (11-6-3-0) and could be sitting on a big try.
7-Rocket Deo (3-1)-The Brett Pelling filly also tries Lasix for the 2nd time and accomplished what was needed starting from post 8 last week. This gal has 3 wins in 7 starts at M1 and could benefit from an expected hot pace.
8-It's A Love Thing (7/2)-The Dave Menary entry raced well in the Elim coming 3rd a neck back. Was used early in the mile and hung in there. Has a win and a close 3rd place finish in 2 Big M races. The post helps the price and best to respect. Menary and James MacDonlad have teamed up for big wins in the past.

        Race 7 (8:50 PM EST)

2-Daiquiri Hanover (6-1)-Normally my plan would be to play against a winner which was a huge price that came from off the pace to win. The Ake Svanstedt pupil went off as a big overlay in my book even starting from post 9 and paid off at 79-1. This is a sharp outfit who probably wanted to come home hard and they happened to win. This was the race they were aiming for and hasn't been worse than 2nd in 4 Big M races, taking 2 pictures. Will respect chances and should be in play early on.
6-TCI (5/2)-The Ron Burke trainee is a big-time player and makes its 2nd start on Lasix. Won easily last week and may not get the same respect this time. That said, the race will need to go through the son of Cantab Hall.

        Race 8 (9:15 PM EST)

6-Bythemissal (6/5)-The Burke standout has made only 6 starts this year and looks like he is in prime form to collect another bug check. Left from post 8 last week, took control early on and didn't look back. There is speed on the rail but if Gingras wants the point it will be his. Doesn't have to lead every step of the way to win and with a smooth trip should be tough to beat.

        Race 9 (9:40 PM EST)-

5-Winner's Bet (6/5)-Winner of 3 straight but hasn't raced since 10-4 and will bank on Nancy Takter that the 4-year-old will be dialed on high. Has won 7 of 13 at M1 and regular pilot Dexter Dunn will be at the controls. The plan could be to go gate to wire, and usually wins if 1st or 2nd at the head of the stretch.
11-Oh Well (10-1)-This Marcus Melander pupil won't be on many tickets and needs to a few breaks and a huge try to win from the 2nd tier. Has posted only 1 win this year but does well at M1 (20-6-9-3). There is gate speed on the inside and Todd McCarthy is no slouch. Could be in striking range down the lane and if the chalk gets roughed up the 4-year-old knows how to close in a hurry.

        2.00 Early Pick 4

Ron Nicoletti: Saturday Gulfstream Mandatory Pick 6 Analysis

          October 25, 2024 | By 1/ST BET

          RACE 6:
9 TIMELY REWARD has her claiming tag sliced in half in the first race since pressing the pace and weakening vs $25,000 maidens, on the Tapeta, during August. Saffie Joseph Jr, 24% with the layoff, has Edgard Zayas overseeing the return to the main track. 8 IRON SHIELD, now in the Rashard Creque barn, the sophomore will try the dirt for the first time after showing speed vs similar quality when in the Saffie Joseph Jr barn. The tote action should tell us more. 4 ST JOE JET is stretching out to seven furlongs looking to sit a stalking trip off what should be a solid early pace scenario. Trainer Kathy Guciardo has Miguel Vazquez at the controls.

          SELECTIONS: 9-8-4

          RACE 7:
4 HERE’S THE KICKER was aptly named when she kicked the heck out of a field of older maiden special weight runners going six and a half furlongs. Saffie has Edgard returning on the daughter of Liam’s Map. 8 BEACH PARTY BINGO, another from the Saffie Joseph Jr juggernaut, is hoping the weather cooperates after following a game second on a fast track two starts back with a five-wide splash fest on a sealed sloppy track. Micha Husbands guides this half of the uncoupled entry. 5 RUTHLESS RUA is making her South Florida debut the first start since rallying to defeat $50,000 two lifetime allowance runners going six furlongs at Delmar. The four-year-old should sit a
nice trip off the blistering pace expected.

          SELECTIONS: 4-8-5

          RACE 8:
10 LAWLER is hoping to save a tad more for the stretch drive after responding to the addition of blinkers with a set the pace second – beaten a halflength – at this level and distance. Trainer Ruben Sierra has journeyman Luca Panici overseeing the outside draw. 1 QUIZLER is stretching out after the solid debut in which he surrendered a late lead to finish third in his five and a half-furlong debut. Mary Lightner is five for fourteen (36%) with maidens making their second start. 3 NOTHINGSUBTLE will be outfitted with blinkers after shaking off trouble at the start to finish third in his six and a half-furlong debut in the slop. Trainer Nick Palmer is 25% with maidens making their second start.

          SELECTIONS: 10-1-3

          RACE 9:
1 DISATTACHED is returning to the turf and moving to the rail after closing from an outside post to finish fourth vs $25,000 conditioned claimers going around two turns on the Tapeta. Dave Fawkes has Joe Bravo managing the expected trip behind the speed. 5 GUILDENSTERN (IRE), a well-meant second vs similar on the turf at Colonial Downs, is going back to the grass after encountering traffic problems when finishing a distant sixth behind the top choice last out. Look for the gelding to be closer to the pace with a clean trip. 2 CARLIN CLAN makes his local return for trainer Robert Falcone Jr with the speed needed to steal a race where the major contenders do their best running from off the pace.

          SELECTIONS: 1-5-2

          RACE 10:
8 LOVIN MAKES CENTS is making her first start since finishing second between a pair of next-out winners and in front of next-out winner Wicklow Gal at this level during May. Trainer Eduardo Nunez has Renzo Rojas named to ride.
1 MEGAN MAKIN MONEY will tussle with $10,000 open claimers on the Tapeta after a trio of consistent outings sprinting on the main track. She breaks from the rail hoping to play catch me if you can. 6 SHEZ SPEIGHTFUL is returning to the Tapeta in the first start since drawing clear to defeat $8,000 conditioned claimers impressively in the first race after the claim by Gary Jackson. She gets the decisive test in her return to action.

          SELECTIONS: 8-1-6

RACE 11: THE OUR DEAR PEGGY
7 RAMSEY POND is making her stakes debut vs winners after drawing clear on the Kentucky Downs turf to break her maiden by almost five lengths. The $100,000 daughter of Divisidero gets second-time blinkers for Saffie and Edgard. 12 HELLO HELLO HELLO is moving to the turf after saying Bye Bye to the field in consecutive route races on the Tapeta. The concern going a mile on the grass from the demanding outside post.
3 IT’S WITCHCRAFT, a $1.1 million-dollar daughter of Tapit, supplemented into the race, is making her first journey around two turns after the pair of so-so outings sprinting on the grass. She is bred to love this distance and beyond.

          SELECTIONS: 7-12-3

          BEST BET: RACE 7 – 4 HERE’S THE KICKER

LONGSHOT: RACE 10 – 8 LOVIN MAKIN CENTS

            #6
            Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

            Keeneland - Race #6
#6 Long Neck Paula She scratched from the filly version of this spot yesterday in favor of this one, and I think she gets another pretty good draw to try to find an attacking trip in this spot. Some appeal with the boys.
#4 Politcallycorrect He might appreciate the class relief out of the Grade III last out, and I like that he has shown some versatility in his short career. Tactical speed watches it unfold.
#4 Macho Music He was sharp here earlier this month with his second straight win by open lengths, and let's see what happens if he encounters a bit classier pace company today. Obvious talent.
Race Summary Long Neck Paula is quick enough to stay close today, but she might be able to find a perfect attacking spot from the outside here.
            Keeneland - Race #8
#9 Grand Aspen Nothing from him in the Pegasus World Cup, but he hasn't been seen since, so I think it's OK to forgive him for that one. He is drawn well to flash some positional pace in a race without much serious speed. Might get back on track today.
#8 Hit Show He should be in touch throughout, and his Lukas score at Churchill last out was pretty solid. Worry he's a bit overbet, but he's one of the obvious players today.
#2 Tumbarumba Reliable guy is an honest Grade II/III type, and he might have a go for it on the engine from this post. Wouldn't be a surprise today.
Race Summary Grand Aspen can bounce back while racing fresh today, as he was heading in a good direction before the Pegasus flop. Expecting better today.
            Keeneland - Race #9
#1 Neat He's super honest and ran well to bag a Grade III here earlier this year despite being rank early. Might find a cozy trip from the fence today.
#11 Trikari He's supposed to be tough while getting back in with sophomores after not missing by too much in a tough Del Mar spot last out. Quick enough to avoid the worst of the draw.
#4 My Boy Prince He is probably capable of something a bit better today after the even run in the Woodbine Mile, and his better stuff seems in line with what it would take to land this. Some appeal.
Race Summary Fun race -- think you can look to #6 Brilliant Berti and #7 Lagynos on the spread plays, too. Neat might offer a midrange price today while getting back over a course he handled well earlier this year.

              Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

              Laurel Park - Race #1
#10 BIG BIG STAR (6-1) In top form, caught the 4-to-5 favorite in win at this level.
#8 BALLYHOO PRINCE (8-1) Lightly-raced 8yo can make good use of his speed in return.
#2 DR. HYDE (5-1) $50K turf earner seeks repeat, needs come pace flow.
Race Summary BIG BIG STAR finished on both sides of a photo finish at this level while wearing blinkers for the first time. He draws outside in another full field, but he can get early position and remains a good value play at 6-1 on the morning line. Bet to win and place.
              Laurel Park - Race #4
#3 KICK STARTNESS (7-5) Little value but likely winner in bid to join $100,000 Club as a 3yo.
#4 MARGIE’S FUN SON (5-2 Rallied for a win and three seconds in last four starts at this level.
#2 MELT WITH YOU (4-1) ‘Kick’ stablemate burned money in last pair, won prior two starts.
Race Summary KICK STARTNESS, a five-time winner facing all nw/3 rivals, seeks his fifth victory in a row. He returned after a voided vet claim to post his top speed figure in a wire-to-wire victory. Bet to win and place and play a 3-4 exacta box.
              Laurel Park - Race #6
#2 STORMY HOLLOW (5-2) Chased hustling leader, held second, shortens up by a half-furlong.
#9 BEACH COWBOY (8-5) Best on paper, barn does well with class droppers, moves inside out.
#4 BOX OF ROCKETS (6-1) Seeks return to main-track form in second start off layoff.
Race Summary STORMY HOLLOW’S true colors showed with a clean break at this level in his second start. He chased the 2-1 winner, who opened up on the turn, and held second despite not changing leads. Bet to win and place and play 2-4 and 2-9 exactas.

                    # 7 MYSTIC PAINT 5/2
                    # 1 FRANKIE JR 3/1
FOOSEA is tough to overlook as the bet in here. Arrossa has a strong 22 percent win rate with entries running at this distance and surface. He has put up formidable figures under today's conditions and will almost certainly fare well against this field. With one of the strongest jockeys in terms of dividends at the window, don't count this gelding out. MYSTIC PAINT - Is tough not to consider given the company run in lately. He has been running admirably and the Equibase Speed Figures are among the best in this field. FRANKIE JR - Make a note that this one runs on Lasix today. Has a sharp shot here if you like back class.

                      # 6 FAST CANDY 6/1
TIPPA THE ICEBERG has a quite good shot to take this race. She has been moving solidly lately while recording solid Speed Figures. I think having Pulido ride this filly is a smart choice. The speed figure of 55 from her most recent race looks decent in here. RM LETHAL CARTEL - Is hard not to examine based on Equibase Speed Figures which have been very good - 53 avg - of late. Ran a strong last race. FAST CANDY - With Levario in the saddle guiding her, this mare should be able to break out sharply in this contest.

                        Century Downs - Race #6 - Post: 3:15pm - Stakes - 8.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $50,000 Class Rating: 71 Birdcatcher S.

                        Rating:

                        #1 HOLMDEL HORNET (ML=10/1)
                        #2 HOLIDAY'S AGAIN (ML=8/1)
                        #4 SMOKE DADDY (ML=1/1)

HOLMDEL HORNET - This thoroughbred could be close at the end. He's got a terrific late kick. This horse could be tough in this race, especially since Steadman rode last time out and now should be acquainted with this one. This gelding is in fine physical condition. Ran second on Oct 12th. First-time going 1 1/16 miles. This trainer is a keen one when it comes to stretching out any animal. I'd give them a real good look. HOLIDAY'S AGAIN - This gelding is the longer price of the 'split' entry from the barn of Rycroft. A gelding like this one, almost always in-the-money, usually makes an excellent trifecta key horse. SMOKE DADDY - Don't often see a positive ROI like +95. This jock/trainer duo has done well together over the last year. This colt's last speed figure registered on September 14th is at the top in last race Equibase speed figures.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 KITTY HOUSE (ML=7/2), #6 MR MIEZIE (ML=9/2), #5 WRIT IN STONE (ML=6/1),

KITTY HOUSE - The effort last race out on Oct 12th probably won't hold up against tougher opponents when they turn for home. MR MIEZIE - This gelding won last time, but probably won't flaunt it today versus tougher competition. Mediocre speed figure last time around the track at Century Downs at 6 furlongs. Don't believe this runner will improve too much in today's race. WRIT IN STONE - When looking at today's class rating, he will have to record a better speed rating than last time out to compete in this dirt route.

                          Rating:

                          #8 HELLO KID O KID O (ML=6/1)

BUSY MAKING MUNNY - I like when a race sets up this way. This filly has the lone speed to crush this field. Espinoza comes to ride after getting to know the filly in the last event. Got some betting action in debut on September 14th at Fresno, but finished second. Has a shot today. TIZSUMMER - Filly is a first time starter whose last three workouts were on this track. This dam (La Darling) has had solid success with first out winners, cashing 50 pct of the time. HELLO KID O KID O - Have to make this filly a strong challenger; she comes off a good race on October 5th.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 HERAS HOPE (ML=6/1), #6 BORDER CONTROL (ML=8/1),

HERAS HOPE - Almost certainly won't make much of a mark this time. BORDER CONTROL - This less than sharp equine will in all probability be way back as this group crosses the wire.

All signs point to THE SERPENT for the pick. This outing may be controlled by this gelding. A single look at the avgerage speed rating will prove that. Seems to have a respectable class edge based on the opponents he has raced against. The group noted a very promising event out of this fine animal last time. Looking for a repeat effort of that to dominate. TIN ROOF RAIDER A - Many race players know speed is is such an important factor. This harness racer has credentials with a 79 average statistic. Many horse players will recognize the great speed fig in the last race. Stacks up against any horse in this field of starters. CENTURY FURY - Many selectors love this gelding on the driver/handler numbers alone. Clear-cut returns over time for this driver-conditioner combo. This standardbred is an obvious contender.
