    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

    Mahoning Valley - Race #6
#6 Inside Stunt He was really good here last season and draws well to watch everything unfold while a few of the quicker players sort things out early. Dangerous with his best.
#4 Fivefive Six Champ He went on a tear here earlier this year when rattling off four in a row, and he's obviously tough again today if he comes back running like that over the local footing. Reliable form fits.
#2 Rainbow's Pride Better stuff might keep him in the frame, and he has some versatile speed that should give his rider a couple options from from the break.
Race Summary Inside Stunt has positional pace to find a good spot from the high draw, and he is one of a couple of players in here who have historically been very tough over the local strip.
    Mahoning Valley - Race #7
#1 Hitsville He ran OK here a few times in the past, and I'm hoping he'll get enough pace to set things up for his late rally. Not a whole lot of other potential finishing punch in here, so maybe he can save ground and then pick them up late.
#5 Notso Mischievous Not much to argue with on his page through five starts, and he's quick enough to be right in the mix early again with this group. Mild pressing gear could make him extra dangerous.
#6 Notorious Sixohtwo Speed made his local debut a winning one when punching home by nearly 10, and he gets the best of the draw among the forward players to attack from the outside.
Race Summary Hitsville has a little midrange price appeal if a few of these knock heads early on, as he has decent enough finishing form and has won two of his three career races here.
    Mahoning Valley - Race #8
#8 Kelleher Honest finisher might get an OK setup in a spot with a couple decent pace players lined up, and he might be ready to flash some of his more potent finishing punch while turning back around one bend.
#9 Reckless L J He's pretty honest and has a little ability to sit just a touch off the speed, maybe giving him a chance to sit in a spot to avoid the early battle but stay in touch throughout.
#6 Big Fig He's another with some reliable form on his page, and I'm curious to see how he aligns with the locals at this kind of class level with some mixed messages on overall class showing.
Race Summary Fun race with a big field and a handful of potential forward players. #3 Gapper is another I'd want to include on the deeper plays at a price.

      Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

      Penn National - Race #2
#6 BEE BY THE SEA (4-1) Steady form despite not winning in the last year, good value play.
#2 GIMMEBACKMYBULLETS (2-1) Second in recent try at this level to Over and Thunder (8-23, $124k).
#1 ROCKIN THE PALACE (5-2) Drops, stretches out, numbers translate well to this spot.
Race Summary BEE BY THE SEA has three seconds and a third in his last four starts at the $4,000 level. He finished behind shorter-priced rivals in all of them. He should benefit from a fast, useful sprint last out. Bet to win and place.
      Penn National - Race #3
#4 BELLS ARE RINGING (6-1) Has speed, sheds weight, could take catching at tempting price.
#5 CAJUN VIBES (3-1) Bid 4-wide after tardy start, ‘dug in’ gamely, only to be out-kicked by the winner.
#3 AWESOME HARRY (12-1) Got good view of grandstand when finishing a distant third last out.
Race Summary BELLS ARE RINGING gave way readily while chasing the fleet-footed winner last out, but he carried his speed a long way in two prior starts at Laurel Park and gets in light-weighted tonight. Bet to win and place and play a 3-4-5 exacta box.
      Penn National - Race #6
#3 PUTTHEGLASSDOWN (5-1) Good fit at this level as 8yo closes in on $250k in 6F earnings.
#2 HERE’S WALDO (5-2) Steps up off the claim, holds tactical advantage over main rivals.
#4 WAHEEL (4-1) A win, two seconds and a third in last four starts at Finger Lakes.
Race Summary PUTTHEGLASSDOWN rallied between foes on the turn and settled for second behind repeat winner Trophy Room when he ran under the same conditions three starts ago. The lack of pace in here is a concern, but the price is right for a win and place bet and a 3/2,4/ALL trifecta.

            Race 10 - Claiming - 6.5f on the Dirt. Purse: $18000 Class Rating: 78

FOR THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NOT WON A RACE SINCE APRIL 30. THREE YEAR OLDS, 122 LBS.; OLDER, 125 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE SINCE SEPTEMBER 30 ALLOWED 3 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $5,000
            RECOMMENDED CHOICES
            # 7 CAPTAIN CARDO 12/1
            # 4 RECKLESS PLACE 20/1
            # 9 DIXIE'S TWO STENTS 20/1
My choice in this contest is CAPTAIN CARDO especially at such a decent 12/1. Has recorded formidable Equibase speed figs in dirt sprint races in the past. He has been racing strongly recently while recording sharp speed figs. I like Bowman on this gelding to give him a respectable chance to hit the wire first. RECKLESS PLACE - The Lasix change (with second time Lasix) may spark a return to the races for this gelding. The conditioner wheels this one back quickly to race again. DIXIE'S TWO STENTS - The speedy return to the races points to a sound effort this time around. Looks competitive for the conditions of this competition today, showing solid numbers in dirt sprint races lately.

Mahoning Valley Race Course - Race #3 - Post: 1:50pm - Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $17,500 Class Rating: 75

              Rating:

              #5 NICK CAN FIX (ML=3/1)
              #3 GIV'EM THE BIZ (ML=10/1)
              #2 BUCKEYE RED (ML=8/1)

NICK CAN FIX - Gonzalez and Shanyfelt partnered up are a handicapper's friend. This equine collects a lot of cash per start. In the top spot in this race. GIV'EM THE BIZ - This gelding is the longer price of the 'split' entry from the barn of Johnson. I like that most recent effort on Oct 8th at Thistledown where he ran first. I usually like playing sprint horses who are 3-4 races into a comeback. BUCKEYE RED - This gelding should give a good account of himself in today's clash.

              Vulnerable Contenders: #7 OAKEN (ML=9/5), #1 WEEKEND BUZZ (ML=4/1), #6 SWEET LEMON DROP (ML=6/1),

OAKEN - Sep 25th is the last time we've seen this gelding around. Have to be a little bit leery. Hard to put any cash on this gelding on the win end. Likes to hit the board though. Shouldn't have too much left in the tank after back to back grinding stretch drives. WEEKEND BUZZ - Don't think this pony will make a winning move in today's race. That last rating was mediocre when compared with today's Equibase class figure. SWEET LEMON DROP - Speed ratings of 75/56/50 are going on a downward course.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - GIV'EM THE BIZ - Last two races this gelding has shown a steady increase in his speed numbers. This thoroughbred is a top contender against these ponies today.

FOR MAIDENS, FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 118 LBS.; OLDER, 123 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $12,500.
                RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                # 7 COACH CALEY (IRE) 9/5
                # 5 ECHO 5/1
                # 4 THE MONSTER IRUS 9/2
COACH CALEY (IRE) is tough to overlook as the bet in here. The average Equibase class figure of 55 makes this horse difficult to beat. I expect a formidable performance from this racer whose trainer has one of the best ROI percentages with horses running at this distance and surface. She should definitely be given a shot given the competitive speed figs. ECHO - Sound average Equibase Speed Figs in dirt route races make this animal a key contender. Boasts reliable speed figs on average overall when compared with the rest of this group of animals. THE MONSTER IRUS - Has the look of a lucrative wager. Corderolopez is serious with this one, wheeling her right back.

                  Charles Town - Race #5 - Post: 8:53pm - Maiden Special - 7.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $26,500 Class Rating: 69

                  Rating:

                  #9 WELL SPOTTED (ML=3/1)

WELL SPOTTED - Trainer Viands moves this one down in class to face a lower class of horses. Look for a good race in this race. This gelding is in good form. Ran third on October 17th. This horse has increased his speed ratings from a fig of 46 to 60 to 69 in succession.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #5 NO BRAKE NEEDED (ML=5/2), #8 TOUCHED UP (ML=4/1), #7 D MAJESTICAL (ML=9/2),

NO BRAKE NEEDED - Would have to get more than the morning line odds of 5/2 to bet on this horse. TOUCHED UP - Just don't believe he is worth the risk at the given odds. D MAJESTICAL - Today's race is 7 furlongs. Hasn't hit the board in a short distance race in the last couple of months. Not the greatest of signs. This rallier will probably be closing much too late to make an impact in this event.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - WELL SPOTTED - After a freshening, has had a few races and today he enters a sprint race. Should be back in form, so I expect this one to perform well today.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #9 WELL SPOTTED to win if you can get at least 1/1 odds
