Scott Shapiro: Breeders' Cup Friday Exacta-Thon Bets

    October 30, 2024 | By 1/ST BET

It is Breeders’ Cup time and you know that not only means 14 championship races over a two-day period, but also another great promotion at 1ST/Bet and XpressBet. This time we are wheeling back our very popular Exacta-Thon and running it on both Friday and Saturday. Just register, hit exactas on six races on a given card ($2 minimum base wager), and split your share of $7500 per day. Oh, and don’t let me forget about the $2500 set aside each day for the horseplayer who connects on the most total exactas. $20,000 total up for grabs, so let’s get to it.

Here are three exacta plays I will be making as part of my Exacta-Thon plays on Friday afternoon:

Race 7: Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1)

#10 Scottish Lassie is listed as the 5-2-morning line favorite off of her dominant 9-length romp in the Frizette (G1) last month at Aqueduct. The effort was visually impressive, but it came against a suspect group at one-turn. I have questions about this filly’s ability to move forward stretching out to two-turns.

I much prefer #3 Immersive. The Godolphin homebred ships west a perfect 3 for 3 after a pair of Grade 1 victories for trainer Brad Cox. You could argue that she has had great trips in both of her recent graded stake scores, but that was in large part due to her tactical speed. She is not a need the lead type, but has the ability to get into the race, which has proven to be a huge weapon. The Nyquist filly handled the stretch out to 1 1/16-miles in the Alcibiades (G1) at Keeneland last out and should get a favorable pocket trip under Manny Franco.

Immersive will not provide much value, so we need something to spice up this exacta play. #1 Vodka With a Twist would do just that. The Thousand Words filly comes into her first start at two-turns off a really strong run in the Del Mar Debutante (G1) in early September. She lost by a nose that day, but was caught four-wide much of the way on a day where the inside was the place to be. The Phil D’Amato trainee has to prove she can handle the added ground, but attracts Irad Ortiz Jr. and the price is right at 20-1.

    Plays:
    $5 Exacta Box 1+3
    $10 Exacta 3-1
    $2 Exacta Wheel 1+3 with 1+3+5+9

    //

Race 8: Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1)

#1 Lake Victoria will be a popular single in the late horizontals and understandably so. The Frankel filly ships to the States a perfect 4 for 4 after capturing a pair of Grade 1 races in the month of September for trainer Aidan O’Brien. She stretches out to a mile for the initial time, but should have zero issue getting that extra furlong with one of the best to ever ride the turf aboard in Ryan Moore. Assuming Moore can avoid major traffic issues from the rail draw, they are likely running for second place.

Spreading too much in exactas when you like the chalk is not the right strategy, so I will simply play a cold exacta to the other O’Brien trainee, #8 Heavens Gate. The Irish-bred daughter of Churchill is not undefeated like her stablemate, but brings a solid resume to the States that includes a neck victory in the Weld Park (G3) at Curragh last out. Since I do not have the strongest opinion of the Stateside contenders, I will hope European invaders hit the wire 1-2.

    Play:
    $10 Exacta 1-8

    //

Race 9: Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1)

The Road to the Kentucky Derby officially kicked off in September, but this is the real start and always one of the races I look forward to most on Breeders’ Cup weekend.

This year, I like the prospects of a pair of Kentucky-based horses led by #5 Jonathan’s Way. The Ohio-bred has been simply awesome through two starts starting with his 4 -length maiden score at the Spa. Then, he did what quality young horses do. Backed up a fast effort with an even faster one in his first start against winners, beating a strong group in this year’s Iroquois (G3) in the process. Like many, the son of Vekoma needs to prove himself at a route of ground, but nothing I have seen thus far gives me cause for concern.

#1 East Avenue is the 5-2-morning line favorite. The Medaglia d’Oro colt has been equally as dominant as Jonathan’s Way through two career starts. He crushed a group at Ellis Park to kick off his career and also backed it up with an even faster effort in his second lifetime try. The fact he has proven himself at two-turns is an advantage, but he has yet to be tested at any point. If he breaks on top from his inside draw, it could be lights out, but if not, we do not know how he will handle adversity quite yet. That said, he looks like a million bucks on the racetrack in preparation and is going to take some beating.

I respect #10 Chancer McPatrick, who has come from well off the pace three straight times to get to the wire first for Chad Brown, but wonder if his late kick will be as potent stretching out to two-turns. As the second choice, I will pass. I am all in on Jonathan’s Way and East Avenue in this one.

    Plays:
    $30 Exacta 5-1
    $20 Exacta 1-5

Jeff Siegel's What You Need to Know - Del Mar - 11/01/24

      November 1, 2024

Jeff Siegel’s Breeders’ Cup “What You Need to Know”
      Del Mar

      __________________________________________________ ____________________________
      RACE 6: Post: 2:45 PT Grade: B
      Main Ticket: 8-Ecoro Sieg
      Back-ups: 2-Aesterius (Ire); 3-Big Mojo (Ire); 7-Whistlejacket (Ire)
Toss Ins: 4-Magnum Force (Ire); 12-Ides of March (Ire)

Forecast: It’s difficult to assess the quality of his competition but in viewing his two victories in Japan looks to us like a rocket ship. We suspect he’s the quickest of the quick in this five furlong dash, and over the tight Del Mar turf course with very a short stretch we’re expecting him to wire the field. The European contingent has some quality – the three listed in our Back-up line have legitimate looks - though we doubt any of them can outrun our top pick during the early stages. Aesterius and Big Mojo are relentless types, and if they can stay within range they’ll have every chance, while Whistlejacket shortens to five furlongs, finds quick ground, and assuming he breaks could be closest to the leader in the opening quarter. Price chancers include Magnum Force, who may be the most dangerous of the closers (though that style of runner over this course and distance is problematic), while Ides of March was a visually pleasing winner of her last pair at The Curragh and with continued progression could be capable of competing at this level.

      __________________________________________________ ____________________________
      RACE 7: Post: 3:25 PT Grade: B
      Main Ticket: 10-Scottish Lassie; 3-Immersive
      Backups: 9-American Bikini (Jpn)
      Toss Ins: none

Forecast: Scottish Lassie demolished her rivals in the one-turn mile Frizette S.-G1 in just her second start while earning a speed figure that far exceeds the others sin the field. If she doesn’t go backwards, she should win again, though the outside draw does her no favors and the two turn trip will be something new to her. Immersive is unbeaten in three starts, including the Alcibiades S.-G1 at this distance last month in what can be best described as a workmanlike performance. She’s nothing special on numbers but so far she’s perfect and could be the type that just does what’s required. The “X” factor in the race is American Bikini, a quick daughter of American Pharoah who might be capable of inheriting the roll as the controlling speed based on her visuals in two victories in Japan. We’ll use her on a backup ticket but if you can afford it consider raising her to the top line.

      __________________________________________________ ____________________________
      RACE 8: Post: 4:05 PT Grade: B+
Main Ticket: 7-Thought Process; 1-Lake Victoria (Ire)
      Backups: none.
      Toss ins: none.

Forecast: Lake Victoria is an unbeaten (in four starts) daughter of Frankel and certainly one of the best juvenile filly overseas. Thought Process is one of most gifted West Coast-based juvenile filly grass performers seen in recent years. The winner should be one or the other, and since ‘Process is the better price of the two we’ll put her on top while including both on our main ticket. They rate far above the others in the field, so we’ll sink or swim with just these two in our rolling exotics while hoping that Thought Price’s prior experience around two turns over Del Mar’s sharp oval provides the edge she needs.

      __________________________________________________ ____________________________
      RACE 9: Post: 4:45 PT Grade: B-
      Main Ticket: 5-Jonathan’s Way; 1-East Avenue; 4-Ferocious
      Backups:8-Shin Believe
      Toss ins: none.

Forecast: Jonathan’s Way won his debut going away from off the pace at Saratoga and then captured the one-turn mile Iroquois Stakes at Churchill Downs gate to wire. We love that kind of versatility in a young horse and he’s fast on figures, too, so while this is a fairly strong edition of the BC Juvenile we’ll gamble on the son of Vekoma while hoping to get at least his morning line of 9/2 and maybe even more than that. East Avenue is the certain favorite and one to beat based on his two gate to wire runaway victories, most recently in the Breeders’ Futurity-G1 at Keeneland. He’s good – maybe even better than very good – though he’ll have to deal with more early heat today than he’s seen so far. Ferocious has plenty of talent but was left for dead when a distant second behind East Avenue in Kentucky. However, prior to that race the son of Flatter threw a fit in the gate and had to be reloaded in an episode that no doubt cost him whatever chance he had. Let’s hope he doesn’t blow a gasket in the barrier today. Shin Believe never took a deep breath in his facile maiden score in Japan, so who knows how good he is, but at a price we’ll toss him in. The son of Constitution was one of the most impressive previewers in the OBS April Sale and absolutely looks the part of a top class prospect.

      __________________________________________________ ____________________________
      RACE 5: Post: 5:25 PT Grade: B+
      Main Ticket: 11-New Century (GB)
      Backups:
5-Zulu Kingdom; 4-Al Kudra (Ire); Aomori City (Fr)
Toss ins: 13-Henri Mattise (Ire); 10-Mentee

Forecast: New Century (GB) was tons the best when he won the Summer S.-G1 at Woodbine in his most recent start. The English bred colt produced a relentless late kick despite being fanned extremely wide to win going away with powerful speed figure in a continuance of his improving form that began when he captured a listed British stakes last summer. We’re expecting the A. Baldwin-trained colt to settle well off the pace and then quicken when called upon and given a clean trip with some help up front he should be able to tag the leaders close home. Small ticket players may considering using him as a single, but there are a number of other possibilities (see above) to consider for those that can afford the protection.

Al Cimaglia: Hoosier Park Grand Circuit Analysis

        November 1, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia

        XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Hoosier Park starts the weekend with a 13-race card featuring Grand Circuit action. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

        Race 5-Crossroads of America-Purse $110,000

5-Iam Independent (6-1)-Will take a swing with a solid price and fade the (2-1) morning line chalk Danger. This race could set up for the Burke trainee to make the most of a stalking trip and roll by down the lane.
3-Roxanna (9/2)-Raced well in its 2nd start at HoP and tonight Aaron Merriman will probably look to leave and land on the point. Hasn't won in 18 starts in 2024 but should be a live play underneath in gimmicks and could break the losing streak with a sharp steer.

        $5 Exacta Box 3-5
        $10 Exacta 5-3
        Total Bet=$20

        Race 7-Erskine Memorial-Purse $175,000 (8:29 PM EST)

3-TCI (1/5)-Comes off a tough loss in the BC Final and Sig Sauer isn't in this field. Does have a win and a 2nd place finish in 2 starts at Hoosier. Should be tough to tackle with a smooth trip.
6-Pacquet (9/2)-Mohawk shipper is on a nice roll and should be a main player if takes to the surface in its Hoosier debut. The Muscle Mass colt has won 4 of 7 lifetime and often those shipping down to HoP do perform well.

        $20 Exacta Box 3-6
        Total Bet=$20

        Race 9-USS Indianapolis Memorial-Purse $100,000 (9:11 PM EST)

3-Lets Go Endofaera (2-1)-Hometown hero is the real deal. A 10-time winner in 12 starts in 2024 and has won 15 of 22 at Hoosier. It will probably take a bumpy trip to upset the morning line chalk.
1-Odds On Platinum (5-1)-The Mohawk invader has held her own and then some racing against top competition all year. Louis Roy is steering and that can help. This daughter of Bettors Delight should be in play when the wings fold.

        $5 Exacta Box 1-3
        $10 Exacta 3-1
        Total Bet=$20

        Race 10-Monument Circle-Purse $180,000 (9:32 PM EST)

3-Nijinsky (6/5)-Ran into Mirage Hanover in the Breeders Crown Final and Elim. Cashed a pair of 2nd place checks both times and that isn't an embarrassment by any means. The Beaton pupil has banked over $1 million in earnings this year and is clearly the one to beat.
7-Tellmeitmatters (4-1)-This post draw doesn't help but don't dismiss this Welch pupil who has a home field advantage. Has taken 10 pictures in 20 HoP races and John Delong should have in striking range. If the pace is sizzling this 3-year-old can finish best of all.

        $5 Exacta Box 3-7
        $10 Exacta 3-7
        Total Bet=$20

          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

          Del Mar - Race #1
#7 Captivating Boy Think he has some appeal in the opener as dangerous pace in a spot without a ton of committed early burn, and the price should stay playable as he faces some others who make his overall form look a little cheap.
#1 Vlahos Think he's got to be capable of something better than he showed last time out, and he was within a length of classic winner Seize the Grey a couple starts back. Could see it.
#5 Red Flag Reliable runner does really good work locally, and his recent baseline stacks up nicely with what most of these have to offer. Wouldn't be too thrilled at the 8/5 ML price, though.
Race Summary Captivating Boy was second-best behind a solid winner last time out, and I think he might carry his pace a touch better than his midrange price would suggest.
          Del Mar - Race #2
#4 Twirling Queen She didn't stay in the Raven Run last out, but she rattled off a couple nice turf dash wins before that. She might find a pretty sweet spying spot just behind a couple more committed speed types.
#7 Omnipontet Not sure how she's going to stack up with the locals, but her form is honest enough to think she'll give a fair account of herself. Where that leaves her in this group remains to be seen.
#2 Sassy Nature She's got some pace near the inside and probably won't get an easy run with a couple other forward players signed on, but there are a couple pretty nice names on her page, and I think her better stuff might do.
Race Summary Twirling Queen faces older horses here, but I like that she's getting back over her best footing and should trip out just in behind the pace.
          Del Mar - Race #4
#13 Test Score He might find a really good midpack spot in this one, and he wasn't totally embarrassed in that Grade III a couple starts back at Saratoga. Sneaky price player?
#6 Supa Speed She caught a tough one who will go as one of the favorites later in the Juvenile Fillies Turf, and a repeat of that effort might be enough to handle this softer bunch.
#3 Cavallo Bay Mild offerings so far in two North American starts, but he's not too far off some of the better ones in here. Wouldn't argue too hard with anyone wanting to sign on at a better number today.
Race Summary Test Score looks interesting enough after dropping out of stakes company to graduate last time out, and I'm hoping that will set him up for the kind of small step forward that would keep him in the frame with these.

            Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

            Woodbine - Race #1
#2 GIZMO’S B F F (8-1) Duplicate of race two back at this level could produce upset.
#6 SPEEDY RIVER (4-1) Fits conditions well, rounding to good effort in third start off layoff.
#4 SILVER BULLET LADY (5-2) Stuck in ‘third’ gear for higher tags, puts blinkers back on.
Race Summary GIZMO’S B F F make a 4-wide bid to a brief stretch lead in the same spot two starts ago as the beaten favorite. She floated extremely wide in a faster-paced and higher-tagged follow-up but didn’t lose much ground. She has plenty of back-class to summon and should go well in a shorter sprint at a tempting price. Bet to win and place and play a 2-4-6 exacta box.
            Woodbine - Race #2
#6 NOW YOU SEE ME (5-2) Broke inward, ‘moved willingly’ to lead, held second despite stretch drift.
#10 BEAUMONT DRIVE (4-1) Power sweep to 7F victory, slow-starting habit compromised by post 10.
#9 FOREST VIXEN (10-1) Gets needed class relief, needs trouble-free journey from the outside.
Race Summary NOW YOU SEE ME led a long way but got caught at 1-1/16 miles on her return to the all-weather track. But she broke her maiden at this distance and holds a tactical advantage in a field that lacks quality speed. Bet to win and place and play a 6-10 exacta box.
            Woodbine - Race #8
#4 WHISKEY ROW (7-2) Weakened late in route, cuts back to winning distance, gets new pilot.
#13 PANYARD TAP (3-1) Rallied for 5/1-1-2 mark in last four long sprints, tall task from out here.
#9 FAST AND READY (6-1) Continues ascent in the claiming ranks, can be forwardly-placed a long way.
Race Summary WHISKEY ROW swung off the rail and dueled on a brief lead while 4-wide at the top of the stretch at 1-1/16 miles. He got first run on the closing top trio but weakened in deep stretch. He shortens up to his maiden-breaking distance on the class drop. Bet to win and place.

                  # 6 SCOOTER'S BOY 5/2
I've got to go with CREDIT RATING. He has been running very well lately while recording strong speed figures. Has to be given a chance based on the very good speed fig garnered in the last contest. Has a solid shot in this race if you like back class. JON L - Has solid Equibase speed figs and has to be considered for a wager in this race. SCOOTER'S BOY - Had one of the strongest Speed Figures of this group of animals in his last race. Can't overlook the connections here, a 31 winning percentage, one of the strongest at getting into the winner's circle.

                    # 3 LIL HEZA BLUE 12/1
                    # 4 LADY COCO PILOTO 3/1
                    # 9 SAN LORENZO TEMPTED 5/2
My selection for this event is LIL HEZA BLUE particularly if the morning line of 12/1 holds. Will almost certainly compete well in the early speed contest which bodes well with this group of animals. He has earned quite good figs under today's conditions and will most likely fare well versus this group of horses. Is a definite contender - given the 76 speed figure from his most recent race. LADY COCO PILOTO - Is worth taking a close look at and may be a bet - strong speed figs (76 average) at today's distance and surface lately. Change in Lasix (on Lasix) may be the key to a turnaround. SAN LORENZO TEMPTED - With a solid 80 speed figure last time out, will surely be a factor in this outing. Has a sharp shot for this event if you like back class.

                      Laurel - Race #1 - Post: 12:25pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $26,000 Class Rating: 77

                      Rating:

                      #14 BLONDE SAMARITAN (ML=20/1)
                      #7 COMPASS RISES (ML=7/2)
                      #5 WHISPERING SEA (ML=9/5)

BLONDE SAMARITAN - If you review the PP's for this racer, you'll see she has recorded the top Equibase speed fig at the distance and surface. A repeat race in this race and this horse has a superb chance to win. This equine has the class to win the race. A tactical ride by Mena, and this one could bound home the winner. COMPASS RISES - This animal could be tough in today's contest, especially since Boyce rode last time around the track and now should be plenty familiar with this one. Meyers is solid in turf routes. This horse should have no alibis if she doesn't win. Came home fast last time out at Laurel. That type of move bodes well for her chances right here. This thoroughbred has increased her speed ratings from a fig of 49 to 68 to 74 right in a row. WHISPERING SEA - This filly is in excellent form right now. Ended up second last time out and comes back promptly. This racer may have too much power on the grass for the rest of the field. Moving down the stretch, she could put these away. Came home in sizzling time last time out. A positive sign. Just see her latest speed fig, 77. That one fits well in this bunch.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #4 KAPATUDE (ML=8/1), #10 STILL GAME (ML=8/1),

KAPATUDE - This horse doesn't win here at Laurel. She needs a different type of track to show her best. This pony has no victories in her last ten tries. She's probably not worth the price on the win end today. Finished fourth in her most recent performance with a mediocre speed rating. When I look at today's class figure, it would take an improved performance to prove victorious after that in this group. STILL GAME - Can't make a habit of betting on horses that rarely win. If this race shapes up right, all the early pace horses will force a pretty mean pace battle early. Too bad this horse is one of those front runners.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - BLONDE SAMARITAN - Class figure today of 77. Taking a drastic descent in the level of competition and should respond well to easier company. Worth a prime wager.

                        Pleasanton - Race #3 - Post: 1:45pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $12,500 Class Rating: 71

                        Rating:

                        #2 BANG AND A BOOM (ML=2/1)

                        #3 SIBERIAN SLEW (ML=4/1)

BANG AND A BOOM - This thoroughbred collects a lot of cash per race around the track. I believe he will add to that total in this race. HAKUHIA - This jockey and trainer have a positive ROI when they team up. SIBERIAN SLEW - Chavez comes to race after getting to know the gelding in the last contest. A repeat of that most recent performance on October 5th where he notched a speed rating of 64 looks strong enough to prove victorious in this event. Wright drops him down to this class level. You don't need too much more handicapping information to believe this horse should run well at this level.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 MARINIS BEST (ML=7/2), #1 FORMIDABLE THREAT (ML=6/1),

MARINIS BEST - Oddsmaker's morning line of 7/2 make this horse a pass by my criteria. FORMIDABLE THREAT - Not easy to wager on any steed in a short distance race if he hasn't hit the board in a sprint in the last couple months. Just cannot play this entrant. Didn't show me anything last time around the track or on August 4th.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #2 BANG AND A BOOM to win if we can get at least 5/2 odds
