Jeff Siegel's What You Need to Know - Del Mar - Dec. 1, 2024

    December 1, 2024

Jeff Siegel’s “What You Need to Know”
    Del Mar

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    RACE 5: Post: 2:30 PT Grade: A-
    Top Selection/Prime Play: 4-Scipio
    Back-ups:
    : none.

Forecast: Scipio finished fourth, beaten two lengths, in a valuable listed stakes at Del Mar on Breeders’ Cup weekend and with any kind of clean trip this talented two-year-old would have won. Racing in heaving traffic and forced to check and steady several times, the son of Caravaggio finally secured clear sailing and flew home but was simply too late. In this year’s renewal of the Cecil B. DeMille S.-G3 over a mile on turf, the R. Baltas-trained ridgling needs only to settle somewhere in mid-pack and then - if he has to - take the overland route under F Plat to outkick his rivals close him. With rising numbers and a wicked turn of foot, he’s going places – hopefully to the winner’s circle today – while offering excellent wagering value as the logical post time favorite.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    RACE 7: Post: 3:30 PT Grade: B+
    Top Selection/Prime Play: 3-Ag Bullet
    Back-ups
    : 11-Gina Romantica

Forecast: With the scratching of the speedy front runner Kehoe Beach (who remained in Kentucky and wired the field in the Mrs. Revere Stakes at Churchill Downs on Friday), the pace scenario in this year’s edition of the Matriarch S.-G1 changes dramatically, and that’s good news for Ag Bullet, who surely will inherit the role as the controlling speed. A gate-to-wire winner of the listed Osunitas Stakes over this course and distance last summer, the daughter of Twirling Candy should prove to be difficult to catch based on the projected race flow, and on her best day she’s good enough to take control early and never look back. Beaten a neck when third in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint-G1 last time out, she’s back with fillies and mares today, has breezed well in the interim, and retains regular pilot U. Rispoli, who knows her well and fits her perfectly.

Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

      December 1, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia

Northfield Park begins the week with a 16-race card. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool with a 14% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

      Race 11 (9:40 PM EST)

2-Eveninstarzrapsody (8-1)-This is the 2nd start after a sick scratch and draws an inside post which could make a difference. Needs to be on the point or racing at the top of the stack. That trip is possible with a sharp steer from Keith Kash.
4-Legend N Cress (3-1)-Was used a couple of times in a win and this filly likes to take pictures. Steps-up but could get an efficient trip and Justine Irvine should have in play at the top of the lane.
5-Lady Holly (8-1)-Raced from the back in a needed start after shipping in from DTN. That was a nice tune-up and should be better tonight. This will be a test but best to not over overlook, does good work at Nfld (8-3-2-1).

      Race 12 (10:02 PM EST)

1-Saddle Up N Cruise (2-1)-This mare is on a nice roll, beat the $6k claimers in the beginning of October after a claim by the Ver Hage barn and keeps improving. Rallied off a determined effort and wide trip to win in this series last week and is the one to beat here.
6-Elysium Seelster (25-1)-Comes off an even effort on a short turn-around after shipping in from Btva. Recent form has been dull but competes and this isn't a salty group. Has hit the board in 7 of 9 at Nfld with 3 pictures.

      Race 13 (10:24 PM EST)

5-Think Of Galaxies (7-1)-Beat this kind 2 back and will toss the last start. Raced from the back and took the long way around, and this post draw should work better.
6-Majors Miracle (5/2)-Steps-up after a sharp gate to wire score. Aaron Merriman gets the nod again and that will keep the price down. Knows how to beat this kind plus the mare likes to win (32-8-3-5) and deserves respect.
9-Be My Rose N (7/2)-The Burke veteran is often handicapped with an outside post and does more than hold her own with this company. May offer some value and there is a bit of gate speed to the inside. Ronnie Wrenn knows how work a trip from the 2nd tier and this post draw is not as bad as others have been.

      Race 14 (10:46 PM EST)

1-Pirate's Loot (7/2)-The Muscle Hill colt hasn't taken a picture in a long time and has no excuse for not being a main player here. Chris Lems should be at the top of the stack when the wings fold and that hasn't happened in the last 5 starts. Looking for a big try and will need the pilot to do his part.
4-Rankin (3-1)-Hit a wall in last after being used hard off the gate on a "good" track at DTN. Comes back in sequence and has won 3 of 8 at Nfld and 9 of 23 this year. Justin Irvine could be on top off the gate or no worse than in the pocket.

      $1.00 Late Pick 4

      2,4,5/1,6/5,6,9/1,4
      Total Bet=$36

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Del Mar - Race #1
#5 Run For Kidder He's likely to have a little company today, but his two turf sprints have produced his two career wins, so I'm inclined to lean his way while a couple of the others try turf for the first time.
#1 Style Cat He can be tough if he can work out a trip from the fence, but he also has to answer the turf question today. In the mix, but probably at an underlaid price.
#3 I'm a Bad Boy He's another with some imposing form that makes him a player in here, but he is also trying turf for the first time at what is not likely to be an appealing price.
Race Summary Run For Kidder has the edge today for me with some proven turf form, especially in a spot where two of the likely chalks are bringing solid form but trying the new footing today.
        Del Mar - Race #2
#2 Chasing Kat Price won't be much here, but I think she's supposed to handle this group while getting back over to the main track. Her two dirt starts have been solid so far, and she has a pace edge on most of these.
#1 Breezy Blue The turf form is decent enough to think she's a player here if she can transfer that form over to the main, but I'm not totally sold she's going to do that. In the mix, but probably not at a fair price.
#4 Play My Speed She has a little ability to get past horses, and that might serve her well in a spot where most of them have been pretty flat so far. Seems most likely underneath.
Race Summary Chasing Kat should be a handful here while racing ahead of the other obvious threats, and something like her two-back start should make her tough -- leaning on her early.
        Del Mar - Race #9
#3 Max N' Lou He went evenly in the debut run going short at Santa Anita, and he moves around two turns today with some reasonable upside off that try. Blinkers might help, and the price should be right in a spot where I'm not sure who you're really supposed to be afraid of.
#11 Broski He's probably the one to beat after the useful run here in late October, and he's tactical enough to overcome the wide draw. Still, he was 9/5 last out and draws out here today -- demand a fair number.
#1 Charlie's To Blame He could be a forward threat from the fence while stretching out for the first time, and he makes a lot of sense for a top team. Slight one to beat in the finale?
Race Summary Max N' Lou has some room to come forward today while racing with blinkers at second asking, and there are plenty of question marks around the form on the page from the others. Debuting #6 Baeza is listed as the ML chalk, and that doesn't typically happen here without at least a tiny bit of talk -- take a look.

SOUTHERN DIVINE is my choice. Should keep the impressive string of finishing positions intact today. With a nice class rating average of 89, has one of the top class advantages in this group of animals. Has been racing admirably and has among the most favorable speed in the race for today's distance. HEZA GOOD REASON - Garnered a solid speed rating last time out. ACAPULCO BAY - Garnered a solid Equibase Speed Figure last time out. Recently Willis has provided bettors with a respectable winning percentage with horses running in short races.

                Del Mar - Race #1 - Post: 12:30pm - Optional Claiming - 5.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $55,000 Class Rating: 88

                Rating:

                #5 RUN FOR KIDDER (ML=9/2)
                #1 STYLE CAT (ML=9/5)
                #2 SEVAK (ML=5/1)

RUN FOR KIDDER - The ROI when Berrios and Kitchingman team up is fantastic. When you handicap turf races, it's always a good idea to look for a horse who has won on this turf course. Have to make this colt a serious competitor; he comes off a strong effort on November 9th. STYLE CAT - I like to see fast morning blow outs. This gelding's last one was very good. Second fastest of the day. This gelding likes to be near the lead. Today's race is a shorter trip and should enhance his winning probability. I like this thoroughbred. Finished in front of today's morning-line choice last out at Del Mar, and I think he will do well versus this field today. SEVAK - This horse could be tough in today's race, especially since Herrera rode last race out and now should be familiar with this one. Have to give this gelding a shot. Ran a solid outing last time around the track within the last month or so.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #3 I'M A BAD BOY (ML=8/5),

I'M A BAD BOY - The finish position of fifth in the last event shows me that this horse may be going off form.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Turf Man - RUN FOR KIDDER - Having the highest speed figure at this distance and surface, this thoroughbred is the top contender in this sprint race on the turf.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #5 RUN FOR KIDDER to win if we can get at least 3/1 odds

I back CRIOLLITA here. In this field, this one is ranked high in earnings per start in dirt route events. Velez has been hot the last month, winning at a nifty 20 percent rate. Should go to the lead and may never look back. LISANDRA MY LOVE - Don't let this filly slip past you. Could prove victorious at a juicy mutuel. Horses who have been prepared to race at this distance and surface by Velez have shown strong results as of late. Churchill Downs - Race #10 - Post: 5:18pm - Optional Claiming - 8.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $134,000 Class Rating: 102

                    Rating:

                    #5 YELLOW BRICK (ML=4/1)
                    #11 PIROLI (ML=3/1)
                    #8 GRAND ASPEN (ML=7/2)
                    #10 BATON ROUGE (ML=8/1)

YELLOW BRICK - Colt won shipping here on November 10th and looks good right back. Have to make this colt a solid contender; he comes off a good effort on Nov 10th. PIROLI - Utilizing this jock/conditioner combination is a good choice. This animal has shown the capability to win at different racing venues. Making the move from Keeneland for today's event, I have to believe he's ready to run. GRAND ASPEN - This speed freak should benefit from this contest's shorter trip. The addition of Lasix might make this horse wake up and smell the coffee in this race. BATON ROUGE - This gelding is in fine form, having run a nice race on November 9th, finishing third. Just see his latest speed rating, 102. That one fits well in this field.

Vulnerable Contenders: #9 HERO STATUS (ML=8/1),

HERO STATUS - It seems like too much early speed is signed up in this event. This early speedball will probably get cooked at the front. Doubtful that the speed figure he recorded on October 20th will be good enough in this affair.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #5 YELLOW BRICK to win if you can get at least 9/2 odds

                        # 1 GOING YARD 6/1
Hard not to get behind RONDA DU LAC as the top pick in this contest. Worth considering in this contest if only for the nice speed rating recorded in the most recent race. Within the recent past Berube has been on fire, which may give the edge to this filly today. Should be in the hunt again this time, looking to improve that already high lifetime winning percent. BEACH JOURNEY - Looks like a strong selection in this group of horses and her successful winning percentage says she has the desire to score in this race. She's racing in good form, recording substantial speed figures. An excellent choice. GOING YARD - Been racing with some tougher customers of late, has a distinct class advantage. (Average Rating 69). The 1 position is on fire here at Rideau Carleton. More wins than the expected average.

URBANA BAYAMA will have you running to the cashier's window in here. Exhibits the look of a profitable play, averaging a rather good 66 TrackMaster Speed Rating. With a 68 average class stat, this race horse has one of the most compelling class advantages in the grouping. The brain trust noted a very compelling outing out of this fine animal last time. Hoping for a repeat of that to end up in the winner's circle. I GET THAT - Horoscope said take a chance today, this standardbred is as good as any to take a shot with. HUNTING ANGELS - His 68 avg has this gelding among the strongest speed figs in this one. Many selectors will recognize the top notch speed rating in the last race. Stacks up against any horse in this field of horses.
