Ducks, Caps Aim To Avoid Three-Game Skids
              By Brian Compton

Anaheim Ducks at Washington Capitals (-195, 5.5)
              DUCKS (5-5-1) at CAPITALS (7-2-0)

              TV: VERSUS (HD), TSN2, CSN-DC

SEASON SERIES: This is the lone meeting between the teams. They split a pair of games in 2010-11, with the Caps taking the most recent showdown, a 7-6 decision at the Honda Center on Feb. 16.

BIG STORY: After opening the season with seven straight victories, the Capitals will be looking to avoid a three-game skid Tuesday night. Washington suffered its second straight loss Saturday night in a 7-4 defeat at Vancouver.

"We just have to stay out of the box," Caps defenseman Roman Hamrlik said. "Obviously, we can take the lessons from the last two games in Edmonton and Vancouver. We're just not doing the little things we're supposed to do. The coaches and staff are doing a pretty good job to prepare us before the game. We're just doing a little bit too much running out there."

              TEAM SCOPE:

DUCKS: Anaheim won't be the only team on the ice Tuesday night aiming to avoid a third straight loss. The Ducks suffered another setback Sunday, when they dropped a 3-1 decision at Columbus. Anaheim -- losers in five of its last six games -- has scored only one goal in its last two contests.

"We seem to be over-passing and putting the puck in a different area," Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said, "where it's less of an angle or less of an opportunity to score."

CAPITALS: Washington rallied to erase a 3-1 deficit in Vancouver and found itself knotted in a 4-4 tie during the second period. But a couple of bad minutes during the third allowed the Canucks to pull away as Henrik Sedin, Chris Higgins and Max Lapierre all scored in a span of 4:07.

"We knew they were going to come out hard in the third," Caps center Marcus Johansson said after Saturday's loss. "They had a couple of easy goals. That can't happen in a game like this."

WHO'S HOT: Teemu Selanne has 3 goals and 7 assists in Anaheim's first 11 games. … Caps center Nicklas Backstrom has 12 points (2 goals, 10 assists) in 9 games, while Alex Ovechkin is averaging a point per contest (5 goals, 4 assists).

INJURY REPORT: Ducks forward Jason Blake isn't expected back until January due to a lacerated forearm suffered on Oct. 14. … Caps defensemen Mike Green (ankle) and John Erskine (shoulder) are day-to-day, while Jay Beagle (concussion symptoms) and Tom Poti (groin) are out.

STAT PACK: Tuesday marks the fifth of the Ducks' seven-game road trip (1-2-1). … Caps forward Alex Semin has 6 goals in three games against Anaheim.

PUCK DROP: "The thing that really has to get better is our penalty killing, which was really good last year and is really not very good right now. We have to correct that . It's put us in the hole in both games that we've lost. In games that we've won, we've still allowed (power-play) goals. We shore that up, and a lot of other things take care of themselves." -- Washington coach Bruce Boudreau

                Tuesday's Best NHL Bets

Anaheim Ducks at Washington Capitals (-195, 5.5)

After a spotless start to the season, the Washington Capitals hit a couple of speed bumps on their western road swing.

They ran into a hot Oilers team Thursday night and fell 2-1 even though they had three power play opportunities in the third period. Then they were smoked 7-4 by Vancouver on Saturday, allowing three goals in the final frame.

“You go off and you win seven in a row whatever and maybe things get swept under the rug a little bit because you’re kind of rolling,” Mike Knuble told reporters following the loss. “Always a good reality check at the beginning of the year. You’ve got to be on every night. Teams are ready for you, you’re not going to sneak up on anybody.”

Anaheim is getting close to desperation mode having dropped six of their last seven. The Ducks are averaging fewer than two goals per game and have managed 20 or fewer shots in each of their last three. That’ll change Tuesday and there’s great value on the upset here.

                PICK: Anaheim

Vancouver Canucks at Calgary Flames (+110, 5.5)

The Calgary Flames have won two straight to get back to the .500 mark, but they still have a lot of work to do.

They were outshot 18-29 in Friday’s 3-1 win over Columbus and were sloppy in their own end for most of the night. In truth, they were lucky to come away with two points.

“In order for our team to move up in the standings, you need every element of your team firing on all cylinders,” Tanguay said. “We haven’t been firing as well as we’d like. We’re contributing at times, but not the level we should be at.”

Some might argue that Calgary doesn’t have the depth or offensive punch to put together lengthy winning streaks. The Flames will need to be a lot better in all three zones to keep it close with Vancouver.

                PICK: Vancouver

Northern Illinois at Toledo Rockets: What Bettors Need To Know
                  By David Payne Purdum

                  Northern Illinois Huskies at Toledo Rockets (-7.5, 67), 8 p.m. ET, ESPN2

These two MAC powers collided last year in early November in a game that ultimately decided the West Division. Northern Illinois, favored by 11.5, dismantled visiting Toledo 65-30, behind a 422-yard rushing attack.

Needless to say, the Rockets (5-3, 5-3 ATS) are out for revenge Tuesday and are in the right place for it. Toledo is 40-22 ATS at the Glass Bowl since 2000.

Northern Illinois (5-3, 3-5 ATS) is 1-5 ATS in its last six trips to the Glass Bowl.

                  THE LINE

The Rockets opened as 7-point favorites Sunday at the Las Vegas Wynn, but it was up to 7.5 with even a few 8s offshore by Monday. Toledo has covered five straight games as a home favorite and six of seven overall when favored.

                  THE TOTAL

Oddsmakers expect a shootout and opened the total at 67. The Huskies average 38.5 points and surrender 32.50 points. The
Rockets average 36.50 points and surrender 25 per game.

The Over is 19-6-1 in the Rockets’ last 26 games as a home favorite.

                  RECENT HISTORY

The Huskies are coming off a 31-30 win over Buffalo on Oct. 22 and have won three straight overall. They have conference wins over Kent State and Western Michigan, but a loss at a bad Central Michigan team is an eyebrow-raiser.

Toledo played a difficult non-conference schedule, losing to Ohio State, Boise State and Syracuse. The Rockets’ own the 38th toughest schedule in the nation, according to the Sagarin Ratings. Northern Illinois is 74th.

The Rockets knocked off defending MAC champion Miami (OH), 49-28, on Oct. 22, have won four straight and are the MAC’s only unbeaten team in conference play.

                  STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

The Rockets are extremely balanced (186.75 rushing, 251.63 passing). They lead the MAC in turnover margin, pass efficiency and punt returns and are allowing less than 20 points per game in conference play.

The Huskies boast the MAC’s best offense, averaging 463.38 yards. They get it done on the ground, averaging 244.25 yards rushing. Their defense, however, has struggled, surrendering more than 44 points three times this season, including 48 to Central Michigan in early October.

                  QB BREAKDOWN

Toledo coach Tim Beckman has stuck with a two-quarterback rotation of junior Austin Dantin (10 TDs, 1 INT) and sophomore Terrance Owens (6 TDs, 2 INTs). Owens played the entire game in last year’s loss to Northern Illinois, completing 18 of 38 passes for 186 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

Chandler Harnish, the Huskies’ senior QB, is arguably the best signal-caller in the MAC. He’s completing 62.8 percent of his passes with 12 touchdowns and four interceptions. But Harnish is much more dangerous on the ground. He leads Northern Illinois in rushing, averaging 7.9 yards per carry.

                  INJURY REPORT

Toledo senior safety Charles Rancifer will miss tonight's game due to disciplinary reasons, the Toledo Blade reported. Rancifer is fourth on the team in tackles.

                  WEATHER

Temperatures are expected to be in the mid-50s with light winds and only a slight chance of precipitation.

                  TRENDY

Northern Illinois is 3-9-1 ATS in last 13 games against Toledo.

Over is 9-4 in Huskies last 13.

The Rockets are 0-4 ATS in last four games after a bye.

                    BANG THE BOOK

                    Tuesday's Best NCAA CFB Bet

Northern Illinois Huskies at Toledo Rockets (-7.5, 67)

The MAC West crown very well could be essentially handed out on Tuesday night at the Glass Bowl, where NCAA football betting fans will witness the Northern Illinois Huskies try to take down the Toledo Rockets.

The Huskies had high hopes this year in the MAC, but the truth of the matter is that they are in a lot of trouble just for getting into a bowl game right now. If the team loses this game, it is all but certain to be eliminated from title contention in the conference, and at just 5-4, NIU would probably have to win out just to have a chance of qualifying for a bowl game. Remember that last year, 8-4 Temple was left out of a bowl, and MAC schools are traditionally treated horribly during the bowl season because they don’t travel well. The good news for the Huskies is that they have played well of late, taking care of three straight games thanks to some huge offensive numbers. The team has scored over 40 points six times this season, and it is averaging 38.5 points and 463.2 yards per game. QB Chandler Harnish is a true dual threat, and unlike most running quarterbacks, he really does have the arm to kill these MAC defenses. Harnish has 1,697 passing yards with 12 TDs on the year, and he also has 738 yards and eight scores on the ground.

The Rockets are the only team that is still undefeated in the MAC this year, but at just 5-3, they can’t possibly feel safe about this whole bowl situation either quite yet. A win in this game would essentially make it so one more win would lock up the MAC West and guarantee a bowl bid, but a loss and things could get quite hairy. Expect to see a slew of players touch the rock for Toledo in this one. QBs Austin Dantin and Terrance Owens are two very similar quarterbacks, and the two have combined for 1,959 passing yards, 16 TDs, just three INTs, and 213 yards and a TD on the ground. Speaking of the ground game, that’s where RBs Morgan Williams, David Fluellen, and Adonis Thomas do their work. None have even 500 rushing yards thus far on the campaign, but all of them have at least 300 yards and three trips to the end zone. WR Eric Page is one to watch as well. He has 655 receiving yards and four scores with a whopping 65 receptions.

Northern Illinois Huskies @ Toledo Rockets Pick: In the end, we expect to see a whole mess load of points in this game. Neither of these teams have particularly versed defenses, and both offenses have proven to be able to score on the best teams in the land. It’s an awfully high number, but it’s hard to not see this one into the 70s.

                    PICK: Over 67

Martin St. Louis, Tampa Bay Lightning – St. Louis missed Monday’s practice with an undisclosed injury and is considered questionable for Tuesday’s game against Carolina. St. Louis has three goals and six assists for the Lightning, who are set as +105 underdogs at Carolina.

                      GAME OF THE DAY

Northern Illinois at Toledo (-7.5, 67)

                      NOTABLE QUOTABLE

“It’s a payback game. That loss ended our hunt for the MAC championship. Now we have a better understanding of what we need to do and how we need to finish as a team after playing against a harder out-of-conference schedule.” - Toledo senior running back Adonis Thomas about Tuesday’s game against Northern Illinois. Toledo lost 65-30 at Northern Illinois last season as a 11.5-point underdog.

                      TIPS AND NOTES

As of Monday evening, there was no solid consensus on Tuesday’s Northern Illinois-Toledo pointspread. Online shops had Toledo favored at around -7.5 or -8.5 but some Las Vegas books had the Rockets pegged as high as -9. About 61 percent of Covers.com Consensus bettors are supporting Toledo. The total opened at 67 points.

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kevin Kolb was wearing a walking boot Monday to protect a turf toe injury. Kolb was injured in the early stages of Sunday's 30-27 loss to the Baltimore Ravens but remained in the game. He took a season-high six sacks in the club's sixth straight defeat. Kolb said he was unsure whether he'd be ready to play against St. Louis this weekend. Backup John Skeleton is likely in line to start if Kolb is unable to play. Kolb, acquired in the offseason from Philadelphia, has passed for 1,706 yards and eight touchdowns this season.
