    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

    Fair Grounds - Race #1
#4 Elodine Mild worry about her cutback pace at this sharper trip, but she has been in with some better groups and at least has a couple of respectable lines on her page this year. Graduates on the drop?
#1 Radiant Rebel She and the top choice have both had their share of chances, but some of that Louisiana Downs summer form might stack up OK in what feels like an iffy race even for the level.
#6 Flight On Race Day She's another with some room to improve while getting class relief, but I don't love the effort she showed last out when racing for a tag for the first time, and now they cut that price by 75% today. Enough bad signs, but that doesn't make her impossible in a bad race.
Race Summary Elodine would be appealing enough at anything like the 3/1 ML price, as she's not meeting much on paper in here and has a couple of decent efforts on her page with better.
    Fair Grounds - Race #6
#7 Richies Princess Not sure she's going to be any kind of price, but she looks like the controlling tempo with the talent to land this. Her Saratoga form includes some serious pace, and she figures to take it to this group and never stop.
#6 Aldora She's tactical enough to keep the top choice in her sights, but she doesn't always finish with a ton of punch, so I feel like her ceiling might be a one-paced share underneath after chasing.
#3 Blue Heavenly Nothing from her on turf here last week, but she's back quick with at least some chance to finish late if an early battle develops. Wouldn't mind having her on backup plays if the top choice stops -- she seems like a reasonable finishing bookend for that one.
Race Summary Richies Princess stopped when headed last out, but that came with a better group at Saratoga, and I'm not sure anyone in here will be able to (or want to) try to keep pace with her early.
    Fair Grounds - Race #0
#2 Midnight Blaze She showed a little life when getting a short two-turn trip at Delta, and she might still have some upside while moving over to the turf today. This team lands a couple price players every season.
#9 Small Town Heroine She's down in class after a mild effort with better here last out, but I am wondering if the softer spot will help her get back to something a bit closer to the Louisiana Downs tries. She makes a lot of sense, but I'm just not that enthusiastic.
#4 Gouvernatrice Debuter goes with some appealing turf pedigree, and this is probably a reasonable enough spot for this team to bring her out at first asking. Get a look at her ahead of this, but she might be useful underneath at a price with slow works on paper.
Race Summary #6 Giant Storm is an obvious player off the Kentucky Downs special weight debut, but I'm a bit hesitant if the price gets short. Midnight Blaze probably gets overlooked a little bit off the Delta run last out, but I wouldn't be shocked to see her step up with something better while trying the lawn today.

      Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

      Oaklawn Park - Race #1
#9 ADAMANTLY (9-2) Kept good company on the turf, starts fresh, gets class relief.
#3 SENDING (15-1) Improved zip in latest, met next-out repeater in all three starts, two in allowances.
#8 RANGE LIFE (5-2) Second against Arkansas breds nine months ago, steady works for return.
Race Summary ADAMANTLY returns off a three-month layoff and exits a Maiden Special Weight turf sprint in which she finished between three next-out winners with an average 54 Beyer. She hasn’t shown much on dirt but did finished a distant second at Oaklawn behind six-figure earner Timbavati, who ran second in a pair of $40,000 claimers most recently. Bet to win and place and play a 3-8-9 exacta box.
      Oaklawn Park - Race #2
#1 DAZZLEMESILVER (9-2) Dueled from rail in fast heat, versatility could come in handy.
#5 LATE NITE RADIO (3-1) Lightly-raced 6yo ran second to Chiringo (4-15, $252k) when last seen in May.
#7 I GOT NO MUNNY (9-2) Vied between ‘Dazzle’ and the winning fave and tired in the final furlong.
Race Summary DAZZLEMESILVER was hustled away and dueled inside a pair of rivals in a fast 6F sprint at Churchill Downs. He finished out of the money but ‘kept on thereafter’ after he lost the lead turning for home. He can rate, if necessary, an added bonus at a decent price for his new connections. Bet to win and place.
      Oaklawn Park - Race #6
#7 KITIARA (10-1) Steps up, can factor on best, bullet workout over track is encouraging.
#8 GOLD STRATEGY (6-1) Steady numbers, class drop, use in gimmick wagers.
#4 ONE WAY OR ANOTHER (2-1) Has speed and six 1-2 finishes in 12 starts at Oaklawn.
Race Summary KITIARA romped in a pair of short sprints at Louisiana Downs, showed a pulse on the turf against eventual three-peat winner My Golden Bling and ‘was used to advance’ after a slow start in a long sprint won by an 80-1 longshot. She’s worth a win and place bet at 10-1 on the morning line. Also play a 4-7-8 exacta box.

          Oaklawn Park - Race #2 - Post: 12:58pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $62,000 Class Rating: 99

          Rating:

          #2 GOT THUNDER (ML=4/1)
          #1 DAZZLEMESILVER (ML=9/2)

GOT THUNDER - This gelding has been running at higher class levels previously. He did win versus better, a $40,000 Optional Claiming race though. I believe this one is in the right spot today. Using this jock/handler combination is a smart move. DAZZLEMESILVER - Rider hops up aloft after getting to know the race horse by riding last time out. That's always a green light. Sweezey moves this horse here to Oaklawn Park from Churchill Downs. Looking at the horse's PP lines, he has shown the ability to win on different racing tracks. Have to like the way Sweezey has raced this gelding back into shape off the layoff. Horse is well spotted in this sprint and I think he'll run well today. Lets try to beat the morning-line choices with this gelding. Just missed last out, but ran a respectable race.

          Vulnerable Contenders: #5 LATE NITE RADIO (ML=3/1), #7 I GOT NO MUNNY (ML=7/2), #3 HERN (ML=5/1),

LATE NITE RADIO - This gelding hasn't had any recent good results in short distance contests. I find it hard to wager on him in this race. I usually try to beat these types of morning-line choices off the extended layoff. This entrant ran a run-of-the-mill speed figure last time out. He shouldn't show signs of improvement and will probably get beat today running that fig. I GOT NO MUNNY - Would have to improve off that sixth place finish last time out of the box to make an impact here. When examining today's class rating, he will have to earn a better rating than last time out to vie in this dirt sprint. HERN - Not easy to wager on this mount this time. Make him show you something in a sprint race before you wager on him in a race of 6 furlongs. Could be tough for this horse to beat this field off of that last speed fig. Not probable to improve enough to run a figure anywhere near today's class figure, so put him on the likely underlays list.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - DAZZLEMESILVER - Posting a better speed rating each of his last couple of contests. This gelding is a prime candidate to win today.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #2 GOT THUNDER to win if we can get at least 2/1 odds

            # 6 STARSHIP BELMONT 9/2
            # 9 ARMY KITTEN 8/1
GUANA CAY has a quite good shot to take this race. She has to be carefully examined given the quite good speed numbers. With a very good 69 Equibase Speed Figure last time out, will definitely be a factor in this contest. Has competitive Equibase Class Figures relative to this group - worth a look. STARSHIP BELMONT - With a very good 69 speed rating last time out, will definitely be a factor in this contest. Is worth a look and may be a wager - strong Speed Figures (71 average) at today's distance and surface lately. ARMY KITTEN - Rivera has her trained quite well to break promptly out of the gate.

              # 9 SPORTS EDITOR 15/1
I think FEELING WOOZY is a strong choice. With a nice Equibase class rating average of 103, has one of the top class advantages in this field. Looks competitive for the conditions of this race today, showing solid figures in dirt sprint races as of late. Make a note that this entrant runs with second time Lasix today. ON THE MARK - Strong average Equibase Speed Figures in dirt sprint races make this horse a contender. Some competitive figs have been posted by this trainer's horses racing at this distance and surface. SPORTS EDITOR - Quite good shot today on Lasix. He looks decent in this slot and I expect will be on the front end or close at the midpoint.

                  #8 STEEL VENGEANCE (ML=5/2)
                  #7 BRAVE BEAR (ML=6/1)

WILLINGNESS - This pony comes out of a excellent barn for first timers. Handal has a very strong ROI (+89 pct). STEEL VENGEANCE - Getting a break of 5 pounds from last race at Churchill Downs. He should make the most of this advantage. BRAVE BEAR - This horse should be rocking and rolling down the stretch.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #2 LAIRD OF MAGNOLIA (ML=3/1), #3 TAPIZAR'S TEMPER (ML=5/1), #1 ARCADIAN (ML=6/1),

LAIRD OF MAGNOLIA - This thoroughbred just hasn't looked fit lately. TAPIZAR'S TEMPER - This horse hasn't been close in either of his last couple of races around the track. Tough to put your dough on this front-runner. Too much early speed in the event. ARCADIAN - That was just not a very good exhibition in the last event. Will be tough for this thoroughbred to beat this group off of that last speed fig. Doubtful to improve enough to run a figure close to today's Equibase class figure, so put him on the vulnerable contenders list.

After thorough analysis by the handicapping group, AMERICAN MAVERICK comes out as the top pick. Hard to put finger on it, but back him for this race. Many race players will recognize the terrific speed fig in the last outing. Stacks up against any horse in this group. Reason to like this gelding as he has in the sulky one of the best drivers in win percentage over the last 30 days. REAL THING - Has the makings of a profitable play, averaging a rather good 74 speed rating. A great class horse should not be be overlooked. With an avg class rating of 72 all signs point to yes. BOLT RULER - This harness racer could get the trip to the winner's circle here beginning from the Cumberland Raceway 3 hole.

VALAR DOHAERIS is the clear stand out wager in the eyes of the brain trust. Her 92 avg has this mare among the best speed figures in here. A respectable class horse cannot be glossed over. With an average class rating of 92 all signs point to yes. Hands down the best hole at Meadowlands is the 6. The win figure is great. TURN THE PAGE N - A very nice play in here as she has one of the highest winning percentages in the field of horses as well as solid credentials all around. Is a sharp choice given the 91 TrackMaster speed fig from her most recent race. PASS LINE - Certainly should be given a look based on the very good TrackMaster Speed Rating achieved in the last outing.
