Meet the Contenders: Saturday’s Remsen Stakes at Aqueduct

Last year’s Grade 2 Remsen Stakes exacta eventually produced Fountain of Youth, Belmont Stakes and Haskell winner Dornoch as well as Blue Grass and Breeders’ Cup Classic hero Sierra Leone. What’s in store for this $250,000 co-feature on Saturday’s Cigar Mile Day card at Aqueduct?

The Remsen is one of several 2-year-old stakes of note this week around the country, including Oaklawn’s Advent on Friday, and Saturday’s Inaugural at Tampa Bay Downs and Maryland Juvenile at Laurel Park.

Let’s meet the contenders for the 1-1/8 miles Remsen (Race 7):

#1-TUX: Most lightly raced member of this year’s Remsen won his only start, a November 9 Aqueduct sprint over 6-1/2 furlongs. The Tapit colt is out of Fancy Dress Party, who won 5 of 6 starts (Beaumont et al) as a pure sprinter. Rail speed is beneficial in this race to stretch his game as far as it will go. Trainer Bill Mott is a 2-time Remsen Winner (Court Vision 2007 and To Honor and Serve 2010). Jockey Junior Alvarado won this race in 2015 aboard Mohaymen.

#2-AVIATOR GUI: A winner in 1 of 3 starts, he broke his maiden over a mile at the Big A in September. Sire Uncle Mo also was responsible for 2021 Remsen winner Mo Donegal and 2016 champ Mo Town. Trainer Chad Brown was runner-up in this race last year with Sierra Leone and won it in 2014 with Leave the Light On. Manny Franco piloted 2017 Remsen winner Catholic Boy, who was also the last winner in this race to prep on turf like Aviator Gui bids.

#3-POSTER: Unbeaten Kentucky raider brings a 2-for-2 turf mark into his first stakes chance and first bid on dirt. Munnings colt is out of a half-sister to 2006 Preakness and Travers winner Bernardini. Trainer Eoin Harty and Godolphin won last Saturday’s Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill Downs, already putting First Resort squarely on the Triple Crown trail. Jockey Flavien Prat’s 53 graded stakes wins in 2024 lead the nation and are just 2 off the all-time, single-season record of 55 set by Jerry Bailey in 2003.

#4-STUDLYDORIGHT: Nashua and Tremont winner is the most seasoned Remsen entrant with 3 victories from 6 starts, which include 4 previous road trips to New York venues. The last Maryland-based Remsen winner was Jeremiah O’Dwyer’s Shotski in 2019. Veteran trainer Jerry Robb keeps his Laurel Park A-rider Xavier Perez aboard this son of Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist. That sire’s current 2-year-old crop also includes Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Immersive.

#5-KEEWAYDIN: Instagrand colt is the highest-priced auction buy in the field at $140,000 amongst an economical cast. Debuted a solid third at Saratoga before an Aqueduct graduation score October 12. Earned field’s top Beyer Speed Figure (91) in his 7-furlong victory. Should be on or near the pace while trying to extend miler’s pedigree under Dylan Davis, who has won more races on the NYRA circuit this year than any other rider. Trainer Chad Brown was runner-up in this race last year with Sierra Leone and won it in 2014 with Leave the Light On.

#6-SURFSIDE MOON: Delaware Park turf mile winner in August holds a 1-for-5 record, but is 3: 0-0-1 on dirt. Trainer James L. Lawrence II flirted with the Triple Crown in 2016 with Jerome and Withers runner-up Vorticity. Finished 2 lengths behind Remsen rival Studydoright in the Laurel Futurity when fifth. Kendrick Carmouche rode him last out when fifth on grass in the Awad Stakes and returns in the saddle. Catholic Boy (2017) was the last Remsen winner to exit a turf prep.

#7-GUN TRADER: $8,000 bargain purchase took 6 starts to break his maiden, punching home as the 3-2 favorite on November 4 at Parx. Maximus Mischief successfully took the Parx path to the Remsen winner’s circle in 2018. From the first crop to race by Tom’s d’Etat, who won the Fayette, Clark and Stephen Foster over the Remsen’s 9-furlong trip. Apprentice jockey Francisco Martinez retains the mount and looks for his first graded stakes score. Trainer Uriah St. Lewis is best known for Discreet Lover’s 45-1 upset in the 2018 Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup in a previous NYRA raid.

Race of the Week: Cigar Mile at Aqueduct on Saturday

The Lead:
The 1-turn configuration of the Grade 2 Cigar Mile at Aqueduct welcomes both sprinters and routers to one of the most important late-season races on the calendar. Saturday's field of 11 literally spans from alumni of the Breeders' Cup Sprint to the Dirt Mile to the Breeders' Cup Classic. The Big A card also features the Remsen and Demoiselle for the 2-year-olds, as well as the Go For Wand for the distaffers.

Field Depth:
Grade 1 winners abound, including BOOK 'EM DANNO, MULLIKIN, LOCKED and SENOR BUSCADOR. Meanwhile, POST TIME is a Grade 2 winner and Grade 1-placed. SENOR BUSCADOR has kept the strongest company lines overall.

Pace:
There's not a totally committed front-runner here, but NELSON AVENUE, REPO ROCKS, MULLIKIN and PIPELINE all have discernible speed and should make for a fair pace. No running styles seem advantaged or disadvantaged.

Our Eyes:
Here are my horse-by-horse notes.

#1-BOOK 'EM DANNO: Eight 3-year-olds since 2000 have won the Cigar Mile as this late-running sprinter takes on elders for the first time on Saturday. Irad Ortiz Jr. rode him in the Saudi Derby and Woody Stephens, his 2 most important and successful races of the year. Nailed twice on the wire going 1 mile; perhaps 7 furlongs is his best.

#2-NELSON AVENUE: Longshot pace player was caught late in the Grade 3 Forty Niner, the local prep, by return rival Coastal Mission. Won 2 of 3 since claimed by Wayne Potts for $40,000. Tall task.

#3-REPO ROCKS: Veteran re-claimed for $75,000 by Jamie Ness in August but hasn't gotten back to his superior 2023 form. Fourth in the Forty Niner against a few of these and the waters get far deeper Saturday.

#4-VINSANITY: Sophomore won a $25,000 claimer for non-winners of 2 lifetime just 2 starts back and is biting off an overwhelming chunk of the apple here.

#5-MULLIKIN: Raging good form in all 5 starts this year, most recently third in the Breeders' Cup Sprint. Red-hot trainer Rodolphe Brisset has a fairly fresh horse even at this late stage of the year. Jockey Flavien Prat comes into Saturday with 23 graded stakes wins, just 2 shy of the single-season American record (Jerry Bailey, 25, 2003). Mile will be his longest trip, but pedigree and form relieve worries.

#6-LAW PROFESSOR: Rob Atras claim for $80,000 last out off a 9-furlong victory at the Big A. True course specialist at 7: 5-1-1 locally and a multiple local stakes winner. Fresh and fires second off the layoff while stepping back up in class.

#7-LOCKED: Todd Pletcher's 6 wins are a Cigar Mile record, while jockey John Velazquez could tie Jerry Bailey's race record with a fifth victory (and third straight) if successful. Visually dominant in his allowance return win after 11 months on the bench and ran huge in the second start of his form cycle last summer at Saratoga. Gun Runner colt could be a massive player in 2025, and would be no surprise to get a headstart on that Saturday.

#8-PIPELINE: Ninth in this race last year after pushing the pace and likely again will be a in similar forward position. Banner year for trainer Cherie DeVaux, but can't recommend this one off his last several stakes bids.

#9-SENOR BUSCADOR: Deep-closing veteran has made just shy of $13 million, one of the richest careers in North American racing history. But his 3 starts since a fabulous Saudi-UAE run this spring have not inspired confidence he's anywhere near his best form. Fifth in the Breeders' Cup Classic was a decent effort, but not sure he's in as good of form as he was when second in this race a year ago.

#10-COASTAL MISSION: Charles Town legend has proven himself many times on the road, including victories in the Parx Mile and the local Cigar Mile prep, the Forty Niner, in his most recent starts. Jockey Arnaldo Bocachica made a middle move with Coastal Mission in last year's Cigar Mile before flattening out to fifth. Patience displayed in the Forty Niner will be the blueprint Saturday if he's good enough.

#11-POST TIME: Maryland-bred millionaire went national this year with success, winning the Carter at Aqueduct and hitting the board in the Met Mile, Whitney and Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. Brittany Russell trainee has an uncanny ability to be push-button once straightened for home, often looking like he's spinning his wheels just prior. Length of stretch at Aqueduct plays well for him.

Most Certain Exotics Contender:
POST TIME is 14-14 in the trifecta lifetime and has a beneficial outside post draw with a long run to the only turn.

Best Longshot Exotics Contender:
LAW PROFESSOR has some back class on the re-rise and loves the track.

Fair Grounds - Race #6

#2 Crank It Up	She stepped forward nicely in that second start when getting on the turf for the first time at Ellis, and she looks like a danger if she's ready to fire fresh after a few months away.
#5 Fancy Quality	Wouldn't be a surprise to see her rally to land this after a decent Aqueduct debut back in September. Dangerous with a move forward.
#6 Polyrhythmic	Not a ton to argue with in the Horseshoe Indianapolis debut run, and she should find a good spot to get the jump on the top two with that positional pace she showed at first asking.
Race Summary	Crank It Up took a step forward when trying turf, and I think the presence of a couple others in here who will command some cash might keep the price just playable.

Fair Grounds - Race #8

#8 Glacial Power	Think he's got the right style sit just off the pace types and get first jump. Dangerous sprint form in a race where a couple cutback players make sense.
#4 Sovereigns Joy	Chasing pace hasn't been able to stay going long, but that kind of positional route speed might translate well enough on the move to a sprint for the first time. Some midrange price appeal.
#9 Drunk on Sake	Route speed has given way in most of his starts, but he could find a cozy trip while turning back from the outside. Still worried that he hasn't shown he can pass horses yet, but maybe this trip on the grass will give him a chance to do that.
Race Summary	Glacial Power can be tough here with something like the two-back run, and he should get a perfect trip right up on the speed that should advantage him over the turnback runners.

Fair Grounds - Race #9

#10 Show' Em Nola	Nothing but brief speed before fading in those first four starts, but she's getting a good bit of class relief while cutting the tag and trying Louisiana-breds for the first time.
#8 Honor His Half	Nothing to be afraid of on paper in the rest of this group, so I wouldn't argue with anyone looking for a fresh face. Check him out on the tote and track, but I'm guessing he's meant for a competitive try at this level right out of the box.
#3 Crawfish Burl	Wonder if you couldn't get a little something out of her going 7.5 furlongs on this turf course, but either way she's an OK fit at this dirt sprint. She hasn't been in this easy, and she should be in a decent spot turning for home -- a big plus in a bad race.
Race Summary	Show' Em Nola doesn't have any serious form, but she has faced much better groups and could wake up in a hurry here at a decent price. Chasing trip turns to some success?

Race Summary	SADIE THE GOAT battled bravely on the front end off a six-week rest, earned her top speed figure to finish third, now carries 10 pounds more on the class drop. She romped in her only start on conventional dirt at this distance. Make a flat win bet and play 3-6, 3-8 and 6-3 exactas.

Laurel Park - Race #2

#3 LOVING CUP (3-1)	Bid 3-wide on turn, dueled to the finish in turf route won by the 3-to-5 favorite.
#1 FAINOR’S FILETS (10-1	Wide trip from post 10 in comeback, long sprint should suit her well.
#4 BAD TEMPER (5-2)	Three wins at distance and proven at this level.
Race Summary	LOVING CUP doesn’t race often, but she won an allowance race off similar rest to start her year, had trouble two back for a $12,500 tag and dueled for this far in a turf route before getting caught late. She’s well-spotted in here as today’s Best Bet. Play a 3-ALL exacta and 3/1,4/ALL trifecta.

Laurel Park - Race #4

#11 KATE’S GOLDEN DUDE (	Has 17 wins, earned most of $300k bankroll at 6F, post the concern.
#2 PIT STOP MAN (7-2)	Can stalk and pounce for new connections, working well for return.
#4 THE WOLFMAN (9-2)	Won off long layoff to begin last season, seems to always show up.
Race Summary	Parx invader KATE’S GOLDEN DUDE, a vet scratch November 20 at Penn National, makes only his second career start at Laurel Park. But he loves to win and stands an upset chance to do so again if he avoids a wide trip from post 11. Bet to win and place and play a 2-4-11 exacta box.

5th race – (1) Salamis moves to turf for Brown and should thrive on it. (3) Murabeh is an interesting firster. (11) Battle Drum will welcome a return to turf. (12) Roscoe Pine should benefit from his debut but landed a rough post. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3-11-12.

8th race – (5) Oscar Season missed by a head at Churchill Downs and looks best here. (7) Fredo has been rested and seems set for a sharp try. (9) Princetown turned in a solid effort to win his turf debut and cannot be ignored. (8) Samburu fits in with this group. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 5-7-8-9.

10^th race - (2) Lord of War has been away but returns at a level where he can prevail. (10) Yono was fourth at this level last time and switches to Gaffalione. (1) Lucky Curlin will get a boost from a ground-saving trip. (11) Space Launch has a bad post but has talent. Betting strategy: 2 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-10-11.

(4) Beaver State broke his maiden at Laurel Park and missed another win by a nose moving up to a starter allowance. (5) Play returns from a May layoff when was second in a race similar to today’s spot. (3) Hatch was claimed from 5 out of his last 6 starts at Aqueduct and Saratoga. During that span of races, he won twice and was second two times.

3^rd race [OC 80k/N1X, 1mi] – (1) Uncle Jim and (1A) One Man Team are both win contenders after winning in their first starts. (2) Cyclone State made a big jump in speed figures when he broke his maiden in his sixth start. (6) My Mitole came back from a five-month layoff to get his first start in a maiden restricted by auction sales price. (4) Ican broke his maiden by more than six lengths at Horseshoe Indianapolis in October for hot trainer Rick Dutrow.

4^th race [OC 62k/N2X, 6 ? F] – (5) El Grande O came back from a long layoff when he was prominent on the Aqueduct road to the 2024 Kentucky Derby and won a first level allowance while running with Lasix for the first time. (1A) Gun It runs for the claiming option to fit the conditions of this race. Three races back he was second behind Locked who is running in the Cigar Mile on Saturday. (3) Bramito won the first-level allowance three races back with a closing move. (6) Reddington won a starter allowance at Saratoga and then a first-level allowance at Aqueduct before running fifth in a race like today.

7^th race [OC 50k/N1X, 1 1/8 mi] – (5) Brown Suga Babe again ships from Parx for Jamie Ness as a winner of 3 out of her last 4 races with two of those wins in NY-bred allowances but remains eligible for the open company N1X allowance. (2) Stamp of Approval returned from a four month layoff to win a $75,000 maiden claimer. (6) Bernietakescharge won the second-level NY-bred allowance by more than six lengths. (4) Just Music was third at this level last time with a starter allowance victory in her prior start.

Best bets: LaPenta and Madaket entry (3^rd); El Grande O (4^th). Best value: Forward Mone (2^nd); Brown Suga Babe (7^th).

Race 4 at Aqueduct | Saturday December 7 | Post Time 1:08 PM Eastern

Go For Wand Stakes – Grade 3 | Purse $200,000 | One Mile | Fillies and Mares, Three Years Old and Upward

Analysis and top contenders:

Comparative (5) appears to stand out in this field, and I believe she will not be the favorite because she’s coming back from nearly eight months off and because others in the field have top form in more recent races.

The reason I believe Comparative has such a strong chance to win is the race she ran the last time she came back from a layoff. She had been off from May of 2023 to November of 2023, nearly identical to the layoff she’s coming back from today as she last ran in April. That effort in a one-turn mile race at Aqueduct identical to this one-turn mile race at Aqueduct, was one of the best of her career. Under Manny Franco, who rides today, Comparative stalked the early pacesetters in third, then second, for the first three-quarters of a mile, then early took over and drew away late. That effort earned her a career-best 103 Equibase Figure, which she nearly equaled two races later, also at Aqueduct, when winning the Ladies Stakes in January.

Then one month later this past February, Comparative won the Grade 2 Bayakoa Stakes at Oaklawn, also under Franco, before two poor efforts which led to the layoff she’s coming back from today. Cox has a tremendously good 36%-win rate with horses coming back from six months off more and if that 103-speed figure effort from November of last year is repeated, she is going to be very tough to beat. It could even be improved upon now that she’s a more mature four year old, and since she has five wins in 11 races on fast dirt which it is likely she’ll be running on in this race, and no seconds, not only is Comparative a good win bet, she’s also a good exacta key bet in the win position, because some of the others may off excellent value for exacta wagers.

Movie Moxy (4), Ain’t Broke (7) and Shidabhuti (8) all have a slight chance to win and an even better chance to be part of the exacta, as do Tizzy in the Sky (1) and Occult (3). That leaves only Stonewall Star (2) and Rachel’s Rock (6) asnon-contenders, and so the best thing to do for exacta tickets played is to use all seven other horses, although I could see leaving off Stonewall Star and Rachel’s Rock as well.

Bets:

Win: Comparative (5) at odds as low as 3 to 2, a low odds overlay win bet.

Exactas: Comparative over ALL.
