Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    December 16, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Yonkers Raceway has an 11-race card featuring the MGM Grand Prix Pacing Series Final in Race 8. The 0.50 Pick 5 with a $40,000 guaranteed pool rolls in Race 5. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 8, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 8 (9:20 PM EST)

2-Seven Colors (3-1)-Won Leg 3 of the Grand Prix from this same post. The millionaire knows how to string wins together and should be respected.
5-Typhoon Banner N (7/2)-Likes to race on the engine but can take a picture by passing foes down the lane. The Bongiorno barn has posted 32% winners over the last 30 days. Matt Kakaley can work a winning trip with this post draw.
7-Coaches Corner (5/2)-Program chalk makes his 2nd start back from a brief break and won the last leg at 2/5. Jason Bartlett will drive him like he is the best and as long as the trip isn’t very bumpy, he can cash the biggest check of the evening.

    Race 9 (9:40 PM EST)

3-Saddle Up (3-1)-Winner of 3 straight against 30k claimers has made it look easy. Starts tonight off a claim for the Laterza-Holland combo and has been too good to ignore.
4-Im A Powerplay A (9/2)-Comes off an efficient trip win and makes the first start off a claim for the Sodano barn. Comes right back versus the same kind and ANap steers. Has won 8 of 35 this year and could very well add to that total tonight.

    Race 10 (10:00 PM EST)

1-Karloo Bradly N (9/2)-The trip didn't work in the last couple when facing $40k claimers. That could change here leaving from the rail. Needs a cozy trip, can happen in this spot and might be overlooked.
4-Hammering Hank (2-1)-Hank raced better in last and now drops in for a tag. Expecting a big try with Jason Bartlett getting the nod.
7-Shine A Light (8-1)-Brent Holland needs to have the pedal down and on the drop in class that should be expected. Should enjoy the company and best to not overlook even with the outside post draw.

    Race 11 (10:20 PM EST)

2-Tuffenuftowearpink (8-1)-Takes a meaningful drop in class searching for a win. The last picture happened versus $40k claimers on 9-30. Has the gate speed to get on the point if not be no worse than in the pocket. The 8-1 morning line seems wrong but still should offer a fair price.
4-Dontbothermenone N (3-1)-Steps up in the 2nd race at Yonkers and comes off an easy win at M1. Went gate to wire and that could be the plan this time too with George Brennan between the pipes for the Cushing trainee.
8-Always A Thrill (10-1)-This is the 2nd straight from post 8 and was 17 lengths back at the 1st call on 12-5. Did pace the back half in 56.4 and Bartlett sticks. Bartlett gets off the Engblom entry that drew the rail and sits behind a 3-year-old stuck with the 8-hole. He does post 34% winners when driving for the Devita barn. The sophomore has some gate speed and is worthy of a swing.

    $1.00 Late Pick 4

    2,5,7/3,4/1,4,7/2,4,8
    Total Bet=$54

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

      Fair Grounds - Race #3
#6 Fionn She finished up well in the Horseshoe Indianapolis debut run, and there isn't a whole lot of imposing form so far on paper in this one. Obvious that many of them have upside, including this one.
#8 Black Dog Really expected better from her last time around, but she might be capable of something just a touch better in the second start off the short break. Wouldn't surprise.
#1 Dancetheniteaway She was always in touch in that high-end claiming spot at first asking, and there is some room to come forward on turf while adding Lasix for the first time.
Race Summary The Devaux barn also sends out a pair who might be the in frame, but I think Fionn has the right credentials to land this with any kind of step forward.
      Fair Grounds - Race #6
#1 Carpis Not sure he's going to offer that 7/2 ML price, but has quite a bit of room to turn the form around here while racing fresh. Draw a line through that last one and the other route try, and you're left with some really imposing sprint form. Tough if he's back to his one-turn baseline.
#3 Brittany's Dream He's dangerous on overall form, but I worry that he'll give the top choice too big a jump to reel him in late. Capable off the bench with good local form to his name.
#6 Tambourine Star Not much to argue with about the comeback run -- he moved to the lead and just got outkicked while racing off the layoff. Now he's up in class for the new team with some potential upside in the second start back. Maybe.
Race Summary Carpis can be a handful here if he's able to bring one of his typical sprint tries, and he may not even take that much early pressure if he hits the ground running.
      Fair Grounds - Race #7
#5 Corman He might have a little appeal as the second choice, as he moved forward nicely to graduate when getting on the turf last month at Horseshoe Indianapolis, and maybe he can pull the chalk in late with another step forward.
#3 Star's Image He was well meant in the debut run, flashing speed and clearing in the lane to hold on the wire, and he looks like he's the controlling pace right back on the rise today. The one to beat.
#7 Strangers Church He might get an OK kind of tracking trip while likely racing just a bit off the chalk, and he might be sitting on something better while trying turf with Lasix? Not the worst idea if you're not willing to take one of the likely favorites.
Race Summary Star's Image and Corman feel like they make for a pretty top-heavy race today, but the latter may offer a slightly better number. Tough to split them for top teams.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Turf Paradise - Race #3
#7 CODE FIVE (6-5) Kept quality company at Oaklawn after first-out win here, layoff the only concern.
#6 POP D’ORO (3-1) Benefited from duel but showed a passing gear in first start locally for Diodoro.
#3 ARIZONA JEREMY (8-1) Hit best stride in turf routes but can sprint if ready after time away.
Race Summary CODE FIVE returns to the scene of a smashing debut victory a year ago. He spent the early part of his 3-year-old season at Oaklawn Park, facing hard-hitting allowance horses like Zambez, Midnight Taxes and Track Mate, who are a combined 40/9-8-6 with $920k in earnings. He is working well for his return, so give him the nod for a flat win and bet and play a 7/1, 3,6/1,2 Pick 3.
        Turf Paradise - Race #4
#1 RIVER DANCE (10-1) Worked a :35-2/5 bullet on main track for turf debut; dam excelled on grass.
#3 CLASSY LASS (3-1) Went wire-to-wire in one-mile debut for 18-percent ‘repeat’ barn.
#6 UNA PALABRA (5-2) ‘Finished fast’ but couldn’t end long winless drought as the favorite.
Race Summary RIVER DANCE broke her maiden off an 11-month layoff at Emerald Downs, now starts off a shorter break for her first turf race. She draws the rail, has a one-mile race on her resume and her dam, Rapid Ryhthm (9-24, $279k), was a multiple stakes winner on the grass. Bet to win and place and play 1-3 and 1-6 exactas.
        Turf Paradise - Race #5
#2 DIAMOND RIM (4-1) Loves to win, dream trip in store off long layoff, can eclipse $200k in earnings.
#1 GOLDEN ALE (6-1) A more lucrative price option with similar set-up, use in gimmick wagers.
#6 PLANE TALK (7-2) Survived duels to win last two 5F sprints on main track here and at Canterbury.
Race Summary Something has to give in this $40,000 optional claiming sprint and it figures to be the pace. DIAMOND RIM should be rolling late if ready off a 7-month layoff. He put up some big numbers when last seen winning three in a row. Bet to win and place and play a 1-2-6 exacta box.

Race 1 - Maiden Special Weight - 5.5f on the Dirt. Purse: $45000 Class Rating: 76

FOR MAIDENS, THREE, FOUR, AND FIVE YEARS OLD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 121 LBS.; OLDER, 123 LBS.
              RECOMMENDED CHOICES
              # 2 BERTANI 9/5
              # 4 GONZAGA 10/1
              # 3 ONEFORTHEDITCH 6/1
BERTANI is the most respectable bet in this race. Formidable average speed figs in dirt sprint races make this equine a key contender. He has been running very well and the Equibase Speed Figures are among the best in this group of horses. Make a note that this entrant runs with second time Lasix today. GONZAGA - Recently Medellin has been on fire which may give the edge to this gelding. ONEFORTHEDITCH - Is worth taking a close look at and may be a bet - strong speed figures (66 average) at today's distance and surface recently. He has been running solidly and the Speed Figures are among the best in this group of horses in this race.

                Fair Grounds - Race #2 - Post: 1:15pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $20,000 Class Rating: 70

                Rating:

                #6 TEMPLE OF PEACE (ML=4/1)

TEMPLE OF PEACE - This gelding should find these state breds easier than what he faced in his last contest on Sep 3rd. Trying to be a winner for the first-time moving from a grass race to the main track. I think Ducoing will have him fit and in good condition for today's contest.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 AZTEC GEM (ML=5/2), #1 THE SPEEDY ONE (ML=3/1), #5 NAME THE TIME (ML=7/2),

AZTEC GEM - This questionable contender hasn't been near the victor at the finish line lately. Extended time off, then came back and finished sixth. Hard to expect much better in today's event. THE SPEEDY ONE - 3/1 is not priced right for any horse in a sprint of 6 furlongs that hasn't hit the board in a short distance race lately. Finished second in his most recent race with a mediocre speed rating. When I look at today's class rating, it would take an improved performance to score after that in this field. NAME THE TIME - Showed very little in the last contest. Really don't expect any betterment today.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #6 TEMPLE OF PEACE on the win end if we get at least 1/1 odds
                EXACTA WAGERS: None

                  Parx Racing - Race #4 - Post: 1:26pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $21,000 Class Rating: 70

                  Rating:

                  #6 BLIND SPEED (ML=7/2)
                  #3 MARIA SAYS SO (ML=6/1)

BLIND SPEED - Jockey hops right back on board after getting to know the magnificent animal by riding last time around the track. That's always a helpful angle. Using this jockey/trainer combination is a good decision. Have to give this filly a shot. Ran a sharp outing last out within the last month. MARIA SAYS SO - Rounding her way back into form. Each of her finish positions is getting better in her recent starts. I like to wager on this handicapping theory, a pony coming back off a solid effort within the last 30 days. This thoroughbred picks up a lot of dough per race. I believe she can increase the lifetime total in this event.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 END OF THE RAINBOW (ML=5/2), #4 FLAG SONG FLYIN (ML=3/1), #7 PEACH PASS (ML=4/1),

END OF THE RAINBOW - This morning-line favorite may be out of condition without any recent workouts. Mediocre rating in the last race at Parx Racing at 1 1/8 miles. Don't feel this steed will improve too much in today's race. FLAG SONG FLYIN - Hasn't been close at all of late. Finished fourth in her most recent performance with a substandard speed fig. When I look at today's class rating, it would take an improved performance to win after that in this bunch. PEACH PASS - Didn't land in the money on October 22nd at Parx Racing. Followed it up with another lackluster try.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #6 BLIND SPEED to win at post-time odds of 7/5 or better

                    # 7 ZUMURUDEE 20/1
WAR CHEST looks very strong to best this field. Has very good speed figures and has to be considered for a wager in here. Ought to be given a chance in this race if only for the respectable speed figure garnered in the last contest. Has formidable Equibase Class Figures relative to this field - worth a look. ABRAAJ MIRAGE - Is tough not to look at based on speed figs which have been strong - 78 avg - of late. Like the finish positions in the last several events.

If you want a competitive play for this one, feast your eyes on RIP AWAY. Might be there at a nice price tag. Definitely one to keep in your exotics. LITTLE SILVER - Has the look of a profitable play, averaging a nifty 63 speed rating. It's somewhat risky to consider on class alone, but this filly has among the most solid class stats of the group. ROYAL ROBIN - The brain trust will always throw in a horse from the 4 hole here at Dover Downs, definitely worth a look. Could best this pack, just look at the speed rating - 67 - from her last performance.

REEL EM IN has a really strong shot to take this affair. He's racing in good form, recording clear-cut speed ratings. An excellent play. Has a very strong shot for this one, if he can race to his back racing class. Has to be given a look based on the really strong TrackMaster Speed Rating achieved in the last race. TALISMANO - A respectable class horse cannot be missed. With an avg class rating of 75 all signs point to yes. With a tremendous driver, who has won at a competitive 19 percent rate over the last 30 days, this has to be one of the best picks. ELECTRO LONG LEGS - Can't ignore based on TrackMaster Speed Ratings which have been amazing (74 avg) recently. Could be considered in this event if only for the really strong TrackMaster SR recorded in the most recent contest.
