Jeff Siegel's What You Need to Know - Santa Anita - 1/3/25

    January 3, 2025

Jeff Siegel’s “What You Need to Know”
    Santa Anita Park

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
Santa Anita Race 1: Post: 12:00 PT Grade: C
    Main Ticket: 2-Cultural
    ; 9-Empire Warrior; 8-Toppers At Seaside
    Backups: 6-Chasin a Dollar; 3-Exalted Ruler; 7-Canyahearmeknockin

Forecast: The opener is an inscrutable maiden $32,000 claiming sprint for newly turned 3-year-olds that requires as much coverage as your budget will allow. Cultural, purchased for $155,00 at the 2024 OBS April Sale where in the preview session he smoked a furlong in 9 4/5 seconds (and looked terrific doing so), apparently is being culled from the stable before he’s even made his first start despite producing two recent bullet drills at San Luis Rey Downs. Obviously, this is a big red flag, but if the son of Volatile has at least one good race in him he should have enough natural talent to outrun bottom rung foes (or maybe not). Remember, nobody ever gives anything away in this sport. Empire Warrior drops a level, removes blinkers, lands the cozy outside post, adds Lasix (as they all do now that they’ve turned three) and may be the quickest in the field. If he doesn’t straighten the turn (as he’s done in his first two races), the R. Baltas-trained gelding could prove elusive. Toppers At Seaside already has had five starts and is what he is. The Bob Hess, Jr.-trained colt turns back from a mile and fits on speed figures, though he’s hardly trustworthy.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
Santa Anita Race 2: Post: 12:30 PT Grade: A-
    Main Ticket: 1-Just as Fancy

    Backups: 3-Marula

Forecast: We love the two-sprints-and-a-stretch-out pattern for Just as Fancy in this main track maiden miler for sophomore fillies. The daughter of Volatile exits two highly rated and productive sprints, draws the good rail, adds blinkers, runs for the first time with Lasix, picks up F. Prat, and projects to be the controlling speed. Also, she produced a nine point Beyer speed figure improvement in her second race and should continue to step forward with age and experience. Simply put, she’s our kind of play.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
Santa Anita Race 3: Post: 1:00 PT Grade: B-
    Main Ticket: 3-Thirst for Passion
    .
    Backups: 7-Have Patience, 6-Practical Dazzle.

Forecast: We’ll assume the switch to F. Prat will greatly benefit Thirst for Passion is this maiden turf sprint for older fillies and mares, and the return to grass certainly won’t hurt, either. Two races back the daughter of Stay Thirsty stayed on willingly to finish second in a similar affair at Del Mar over five furlongs and today’s extra distance should complement her second flight, stalking style. We’ll include a couple of others on a backup ticket for protection, but ‘Passion will receive the majority of the play.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
Santa Anita Race 4: Post: 1:32 PT Grade: C+
    Main Ticket: Halo Rando
    ; 1-Horse Doctor.
    Backups: 10-Imperial Hornet

Forecast: This competitive starter’s $8,000 allowance dash was carded for Northern California-based runners; in fact, each of the 12 entrants made their last start at Pleasanton and eight of the 12 hit the board in their most recent outing. Halo Rando and Horse Doctor look on paper to be the best of the lot. We’ll give ‘Rando a slight edge strictly due to the presence of F. Prat, a nice recent breeze since raced, and the trainer change to D. Pederson, though on pure numbers ‘Doctor appears a bit faster but must overcome the rail and has never been particularly quick leaving the gate. This is another race in which nothing would surprises us, so tread lightly.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
Santa Anita Race 5: Post: 2:02 PT Grade: B+
    Main Ticket: 1-Nell’s Legacy
    ; 6-Heras Hope.
    Backups: none.

Forecast: Although she was beaten at 4/5 in a similar affair on dirt last month at Del Mar, Nell’s Legacy didn’t run badly at all, as she finished full of run but simply too late after a less than ideal trip. Her previous four length-plus debut win on grass last summer was visually pleasing, so we suspect with this return to turf, the extra half furlong, and the switch to F. Prat will allow her to make amends. Heras Hope didn’t beat this kind when breaking her maiden last month at Pleasanton but she owns a rather significant edge in the speed figure department when compared to our top pick, so we’ll also put her on the top line. There’s no reason she won’t like grass, and she’ll most likely employ the same type of stalk, pounce, and go trip that worked for her up north. While we’re expecting the winner to be one of these two, Going Deep has plenty of zip, exits a hot sprint stakes in New Mexico, and could be dangerous if she takes to the turf, so at least include her somewhere as a backup.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
Santa Anita Race 6: Post: 2:34 PT Grade: C+
    Main Ticket: 3-Tesoro
    ; 1-Nolde; 6-Brother o’ Brien.
Backups: 5-Upstart Yankee; 8- Rich Gold.

Forecast: Here’s another one of those NorCal-only events, which have filled quite nicely early in the meeting. Glad to have ‘em, though it may take a while to get familiar with these shippers. Tesoro is the best in the field on paper, if healthy. The veteran gelding plummets in class despite solid recent form and consistent speed figures, but if he’s got at least one good one left he should handle this assignment. Today’s two-turn main track trip utilizing a pace pressing/stalking strategy always has brought out his best. Nolde picks up. F. Prat so he’s likely to receive a bit more play than he deserves (but for good reason). He’s guaranteed a ground-saving trip from the rail, so with some help up front he should be heard from in the final stages. Brother o’ Brie has hit the board in nine of 12 career starts (with four wins) and hails from a high percentage outfit. You have to include him in what clearly is a spread affair.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
Santa Anita Race 7: Post: 3:07 PT Grade: B
    Main Ticket: 8-Miz Clubcali
    ; 7-Lady Monclaire.
    Backups: 5-Shezmisbehaving.

Forecast: Miz Clubcali sprung a 24-1 surprise sprinting on dirt at Del Mar last time out, but despite the big price there was nothing flukish about it. The daughter of Clubhouse Ride earned by far a career top speed figure while continuing her improving pattern and did so by quickening through traffic from the quarter pole home while benefitting from the patient ride that she requires. And although she is stretching out today to a mile and switching to grass, that’s okay because the A. Garcia-trained filly has won under these conditions in the past. Therefore, a repeat score is entirely possible, especially because the surface switch allows her to return at the same condition. Lady Monclaire lands F. Prat while showing the always popular blinkers off angle. Freshened for two months with a healthy recent work tab, the R. Baltas-trained filly could be set for significant forward move, especially if she switches off early.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
Santa Anita Race 8: Post: 3:40 PT Grade: C
Main Ticket: 7-Roll On Big Joe
    ; 4-For All Mankind; 1-Moose Mitchell
    Backups: 2-Agency; 5-Positivity.

Forecast: We’ll go three deep on our main ticket but none of them have to win, so a spread strategy is the best way to go. Roll On Big Joe is solid on numbers and is drawn nicely outside but he’s always been susceptible under pressure from the eighth pole to the wire. Given his draw, he might be held up early (and he’s won doing that in the past), so we’ll put him slightly on top while recognizing that at 2-1 on the morning line he won’t be offering as much wagering value as a horse like him should. For All Mankind is back with “win rider” J. Hernandez and has looked quite sharp in his recent breezes but he’s really disappointed in his last three races, so he’s hardly trustworthy. Who knows what version we’ll see today. Moose Mitchell – assuming he breaks well – may be the quickest in the field from his rail draw. He’s been off form for a long time, but this always has been his favorite track, so maybe he’ll perk up.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
Santa Anita Race 9: Post: 4:13 PT Grade: A-
    Main Ticket: 2-Burning Rubber

    Backups: 1-Max n’ Lou; 4-Earned Not Given.

Forecast: Burning Rubber offers an excellent gamble in the nightcap. He was used hard sprinting inside in a hot race in his debut and understandably faded to finish far back but based on what we’ve seen of him in the morning the son of Flameaway will be much better around two turns and especially so on grass, for which he is bred to like. The pace projection of this much softer maiden $50,000 field will be entirely different and could very well enable the S. McCarthy-trained sophomore to inherit the role as the controlling speed. Given that type of trip and following a bullet half mile breeze (:47 2/5) that was fastest of 55, he could easily dominate this bunch as a strong win play and major push in the various exotics.

Al Cimaglia: Cal Expo Late Pick 4 Analysis

      January 3, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

      XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Cal Expo has a 9-race card with the 0.20 Late Pick 4 starting in Race 6. The sequence has a $20,000 guaranteed pool with a 16% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

      Race 6 (8:25 PM PST)

1-Bunkerhill Phil (6-1)-Will look for a price in this leg and Phil doesn't have to dazzle this field to win. Stayed inside last week after having a month off and finished second. Should get the same ground saving trip here, and will look for better in the 2nd start in town.
2-Pecorino (5-1)-Finished behind the one above in last and can get a cozy trip. Could be in the hunt at the wire with a good steer by Asher-Stalbaum.
6-Fox Valley Sidecar (7/2)-The Bertrand entry beat the 4k claimers above and draws outside because he is in for a $5k tab tonight. Luke Plano should be out and rolling and will have the 5-year-old in striking range at the top of the lane.

      Race 7 (8:45 PM PST)

3-Sign Of The Times (2-1)-This will be the 4th start at CalX and the 5-year-old has won the last 3 by over 34 lengths. Will be on the point right after the wings fold looking to run away from this field at a tiny price.
4-Alien Art Form (6-1)-Likes to win and did just that last week in its Elimination. Took advantage of a live cover flow and this time could leave and get a pocket ride behind the chalk. Has won 7 of 28 this year and 2 of 5 at CalX, could add to the win total with a good steer and if the chalk doesn't bring a top effort.

      Race 8 (9:05 PM PST)

5-Divine Art (9/5)-Cashed checks on the big oval at Hawthorne, arrived at CalX and faced Open company. That didn't work out too well but got some money off its card and lands at a winnable level here. This mare has won 11 of 30 at CalX and could be sitting on a big try.

      Race 9 (9:25 PM PST)

7-Jericho Willie (2-1)-Beaten chalk went the back half in .58 on 12-28 after breaking at the start and being far back early. Cashed checks on the 7/8's at VD versus $10k claimers and can make amends tonight if minds its manners.

      $2 Late Pick 4

      1,2,6/3,4/5/7
      Total Bet=$12

Santa Anita Pick 4 for Friday, Jan. 3

        January 3, 2025 | By Frank Carulli

        SANTA ANITA PICK 4
        Friday, January 3, 2025

Santa Anita’s 50-cent Late Pick 4 paid more than $1,900 last Friday after four favorites – three at less than even money – failed to win. History will repeat itself in one key area on the Friday, Jan. 3 card: the average field size is nine, perhaps leading to another lucrative payout.

SA 6th race (5:34 p.m. EST) -- NOLDE beat a very weak field of $4,000 claiming horses to get eligible for the starter allowance condition of this one-mile race. But the lightly-raced 9-year-old looked good doing it with a 6-wide sweep and regained the winning confidence that led to his eighth win in the last 16 starts. UPSTART YANKEE is a longshot worth using. He recaptured his good form two back, running down Winter Falcon (6-31, $121k) in a $12,500 claimer. He ‘improved …. as the pace quickened’ on the final turn of a $20,000 claimer last out and finished third. TESORO, first or second in 15 of 34 starts, could take some catching on the class plunge. He offers little value with a 1-for-10 record on conventional dirt, but he’s hard to leave off the Pick 4 ticket.

SA 7th race (6:07 p.m. EST) -- MIZ CLUBCALI found herself in an unfamiliar lead role in a 6F turf sprint two back, giving way to winning favorite Nene Diamond (5/2-1-1, $96k) and a trio of deep closers. She can show speed again on the stretch out to one mile, but she is versatile enough to sit an ideal stalking trip in this spot. SHEZMISBEHAVING rallied for two wins, a second and a third in her last six starts, all at today’s distance. She won an allowance race off a longer rest than this earlier this year.

SA 8th race (6:40 p.m. EST) -- SLIDER dueled and held third behind multiple Grade 1 winner Muth in his only long sprint attempt in the Grade 2 San Vicente to begin his 4-year-old season. But he will need his A-game against six rivals in this $80,000 allowance/optional claimer who are a combined 103/25-20-15 with average earnings of $257,000. Hit the ‘ALL’ button in Leg C.

SA 9th race (7:13 p.m. EST) -- Trainer Mark Glatt is on an 8-for-19 run with turf runners dropping from Maiden Special Weight company. EARNED NOT GIVEN fits the profile after he broke slowly, steadied on the backstretch and raced 4-wide on the turn in a debut route that produced stakes-placed Sabertooth. He gets Lasix for his first start as a gelding. Glatt’s uncoupled entrant, UNRIVALED HERO, ran in two MSW turf routes that yielded 16/3-3-1 follow-up performances. He finished fourth behind Iron Man Cal, who won a Grade 3 stakes and got beat a neck in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. BURNING RUBBER came up empty in a well-bet debut on the main track, but he fired a fastest-of-55 workout in :47-1/5 last Saturday for a barn in the midst of an 8-38 turf run with a $4.21 return on investment.

        Suggested 50-Cent Ticket
        SA 6th Race: 1, 3, 5
        SA 7th Race: 5, 8
        SA 8th Race: ALL
        SA 9th Race: 2, 3, 4
        Cost: $63

          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

          Fair Grounds - Race #5
#5 Curls Night Out She has caught a couple of easy winners in her three races so far, and she's one with some room to come forward while getting on the lawn for the first time. Tactical speed makes her dangerous.
#1 Romany Road Wouldn't be any surprise here for a team that has sent a couple of decent livewires out at this kind of level locally over the last couple years, and he might still have some upside on the move to the turf. In the mix.
#9 Tizntshelovely She's a big threat to land this while trying claiming company for the first time, but I have a mild concern about the fact that she has given away ground in the stretch call in all but one of her career races. I could probably be convinced at something like the 7/2 ML price, but I'm not totally sure she's offering that.
Race Summary Curls Night Out might be playable enough on the board here with a couple droppers likely to take some cash, but I think she might see something better from her while moving to turf for the first time.
          Fair Grounds - Race #7
#5 Cigarette Boat He has failed to seal the deal when in a good spot in a couple of those more recent tries, but I think he'll get a dreamy setup here while tracking a couple pace types drawn inside of him, and his baseline run can handle these.
#9 Petcoff Think he's a big threat to win right back after rolling five others last time out, and he has some versatility in his running style that makes him especially dangerous from an outside draw with a couple other pace players lined up.
#4 Rock N Roll Bolt He's a pretty honest finisher in these turf sprint spots, and he was a pretty good fit when stepping up to try winners for the first time in that last one. In the mix.
Race Summary Cigarette Boat has good positional pace that should help him find a perfect spot while just in behind the splits. #1 Committee of One's better stuff would do, but he just hasn't taken that next step forward since graduating in a stakes race.
          Fair Grounds - Race #8
#6 Got Me a Chrysler He didn't fire last out when racing off the bench, but he has run well here in the past and has some obvious room to come forward with that race under his belt. Think he's going to get an OK setup, too.
#7 Carpis Nothing wrong with the comeback run other than losing it, but he's got that dangerous pace right back here with some upside in the second start off the layoff. Could be gone, but I worry that the race shape doesn't flatter him.
#1 Nine Part Can't argue with the perfect record through two starts, and those summer Evangeline winners don't always bring competitive efforts when they get here in the fall. Love that he has won on the lead and while finishing from the back.
Race Summary Carpis and Nine Part both go second off the layoff after bringing sharp comeback efforts off the bench, but I think Got Me a Chrysler will get overlooked on the board with a decent race flow waiting for him.

            Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

            Santa Anita - Race #1
#8 TOPPERS AT SEASIDE (4-1) Battle-tested in higher-tagged route, gets Lasix for return to sprint.
#9 EMPIRE WARRIOR (7-2) Has speed, exits ‘key’ race, sheds blinks, must correct drifting problem.
#7 CANYHERMEKNOCKIN (5-1) &nda Poor start resurfaced, rallied into photo-finish view in first try for a tag.
Race Summary TOPPERS AT SEASIDE withstood backstretch pressure through the turn, drifted in the stretch and yielded late at one mile. He finished a distant third to first-out runaway Maximus – who pressed the pace in a follow-up Grade 3 stakes – the last time he sprinted. He gets Lasix, gets class relief and gets the nod for a win and place bet.
            Santa Anita - Race #3
#4 DANZING WITHMAXINE (4-1) Showed pulse on SA turf in summer, recent works indicate readiness.
#6 PRACTICAL DAZZLE (5-2) Versatile filly was hard used disputing pace in last pair, use on all tickets.
#3 THIRST FOR PASSION (2-1) Seeks duplicate of lone turf try, lures Prat, distance suits.
Race Summary DANZING WITHMAXINE chased a torrid pace after a bumpy start and tired in a long sprint on the dirt when last seen in June. She returns to the turf, where she lacked stretch kick against odds-on winner Stop Digging (9/2-6-0, $144k). Bet to win and place and play 4-3 and 4-6 exactas.
            Santa Anita - Race #4
#3 COWBOY KISSES (10-1) Can go non-stop in bid to upstage string of in-the-money finishes.
#1 HORSE DOCTOR (7-2) First or second in 18 of 32 starts, makes Santa Anita debut.
#2 WARREN’S WORLD (8-1) Troubled starter allowance run was lone blemish in last four starts.
Race Summary COWBOY KISSES showed his usual good speed but couldn’t hold off class-dropping second favorite No d’Oro at Pleasanton. He should be the target again at the same distance, only this time at a much better price. Bet to win and place and play 3-1 and 3-2 exactas.

                  Penn National - Race #2 - Post: 6:44pm - Claiming - 8.3 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $11,000 Class Rating: 69

                  Rating:

                  #6 LAUGHING OUT LOUD (ML=4/1)
                  #7 SMILES FOR DAVID (ML=3/1)

LAUGHING OUT LOUD - Sneaky speed on this one. She'll probably be stalking thoroughbreds on the back side, then crush them down the stretch. Have to give this filly a shot. Ran a sharp contest last time around the track within the last month or so. I like when a horse has dropped in class at least 5 pts like this one did last time around the track and then runs against a similar field right back. Sullivan must've found the right level. SMILES FOR DAVID - The November 29th event at Woodbine was at a class level of (77). Dropping to a lower class level considerably, so she should be in a good spot.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 URBAN DANCER (ML=7/2), #2 JUST THE THING (ML=5/1), #1 PRACTICAL RACHEL (ML=6/1),

URBAN DANCER - Don't think that this filly has value at 7/2 in today's event. JUST THE THING - I'm always particularly concerned about any racer that earns her biggest speed figure on an 'off' track. PRACTICAL RACHEL - Doubtful that the rating she notched on December 13th will hold up in this clash.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - LAUGHING OUT LOUD - Although she ran fourth on December 6th, the try wasn't half bad. Expect a strong performance in today's event.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #6 LAUGHING OUT LOUD to win if you can get at least 2/1 odds

                    # 2 EVOCATION 5/2
                    # 10 GRACE GIVEN 3/1
                    # 12 PERCEPTIVE 20/1
My choice for this event is EVOCATION. Garnered a solid Equibase speed fig in the last race. Can run another good one in this affair. Exhibits the look of a lucrative play, averaging a solid 68 Equibase Speed Figure which is one of the top in this group of horses. Bettors should take a good look at this one as this filly has one of the best win percentages at this distance in this group. GRACE GIVEN - Amoss has one of the most competitive winning percentages in this group with entries running at this distance and surface. Has recorded sound Equibase Speed Figures in dirt route races in the past. PERCEPTIVE - Solid jock with trainer figs make this horse a strong selection.

                      # 2 FAMILY BAND 5/1
                      # 4 MARANATHA SOON 5/2
                      # 5 IMPRESSIVE QUEEN 2/1
I like FAMILY BAND here. With Castro in the saddle guiding her, this mare will most likely be able to break out sharply in this event. Her 51 average has this mare with among the best Equibase Speed Figures in this race. Is difficult not to examine given the company run in recently. IMPRESSIVE QUEEN - Has to be carefully examined - I like the figs from the last contest. The average class figure alone makes this horse a key contender.
