After an incredibly successful first week of the Santa Anita Park meeting, there is plenty of more fun to be had and money to made this week. Part of the usual fun at the “Great Race Place” is the large horizontal pools and to add to it, 1/ST BET and Xpressbet have a $2M Rewards Points Hit/Split scheduled over the last four races. Just as always, remember to register on the promotional landing page.

Grade Descriptions: Grade A=Highest degree of confidence; Grade B=Solid Play. Grade C=Least preferred or pass; Grade X=probable winner but likely at odds too short to play.


Race 7:
Grade: C+
Main Ticket: 2 Eagles Flight
Backups: None

Forecast: There is little doubt this first-level allowance event for 4YOs+ goes through #2 Eagles Flight. Normally, I would be concerned that we have not seen the colt since his professional debut score on May 27, but not in this case. The son of Curlin is the younger half-brother to undefeated $4.5M earner Flightline, who was also handled with kid gloves throughout his six-race career. There are questions to be answered for sure on the stretch out to a route of ground against winners for the first time, but it would be nothing short of disappointing if he failed to handle this group despite the time off.


Race 8:
Grade: B-
Main Ticket: 3 Havoc
Backups: 6 Afternoon Nap; 12 Uncle John

Forecast: There appears to be plenty of early zip signed on in this state-bred optional claimer at six-furlongs over the Santa Anita lawn. I am hopeful #3 Havoc will be able to take advantage in his first start in over a year. The son of Sir Prancealot won 2 of 3 for former trainer Kristin Mulhall before going to the sidelines on December 2, 2023. Now, the 4YO gelding appears in the George Papaprodromou barn and attracts the services of Frankie Dettori. Papaprodromou sports a positive ROI and 15%-win rate with his last 115 runners returning off a 90+ day break. If Havoc can relax off the long layoff, he can make it 3 for 6 to start his career.

If Havoc needs a race off the bench or is not the same horse, #6 Afternoon Nap is a solid alternative. The 5YO gelding took a long time to get to the races, but hit the board in his only two starts over this course last year. If they really go at it early, #12 Uncle John could be the one to make the last move. He should appreciate getting back to a turf course he has earned both of his wins over after finishing fourth going a little shorter than he prefers at Del Mar in November.


Race 9: Las Flores (G3)
Grade: C+
Main Ticket: 6 Pleasant; 3 Richi
Backups: None

Forecast: To no one’s surprise trainer Bob Baffert holds a strong hand in the second graded stake of the afternoon. #6 Pleasant is the clear one to beat after running a huge third at nearly 15-1 in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint to close her 4YO campaign. She has run well in both starts over this surface and draws favorably outside the main speeds. The Juddmonte homebred will be very tough to beat, but I will also include her stablemate #3 Richi. The Chilean-bred mare has only raced once in the States and it came in June when she mixed it up early in the Desert Stormer and could not hold off last-to-first winner Chismosa. There is no doubt Richi will have to run better in her second North American try to get to the wire first, but she comes in off a strong series of local drills and Baffert removes the blinkers. This suggests to me she is relaxing better in the mornings. Expect a move forward for the daughter of Practical Joke.



Race 10:
Grade: B
Main Ticket: 1 Siennois
Backups: 7 Escape Artist; 12 Living Life

Forecast: The pace should be honest in this full-field turf allowance to end the day, so I will look to horses who can relax early and finish with energy. Of those I prefer #1 Siennois. Trainer Phil D’Amato entered the Irish-bred ambitiously in the Mathis Mile (G2) on opening day, but opted to scratch him to run in this second-level allowance event. The 4YO gelding draws favorably along the inside for his third start of the form cycle and should be finishing well under jockey Antonio Fresu.

As alternatives, I will use two horses that raced against the flow in the November 17 second-level event over the Del Mar grass. #7 Escape Artist was claimed out of that race as the 2-1-favorite by trainer Steve Knapp, who wheeled him back in the San Gabriel (G2) last week. The quick return raises questions, but he loves this course and should get a favorable setup. #12 Living Life will be a bigger price and draws way outside, but has earned both of his victories over this course and thrives when they go at it on the front end. I like the move to Kazushi Kimura.

Race of the Week: Saturday's Ginger Brew at Gulfstream Park

The Lead:
Newly turned 3-year-olds are in the spotlight Saturday at Gulfstream Park with the co-featured Mucho Macho Man Stakes kicking off the Florida Derby series and the Ginger Brew Stakes for filly turf milers. They go as Races 10-11, respectively, to wrap the card and both are part of the Xpressbet Beat the Host season kickoff contest. Outplay Gulfstream announcer Pete Aiello for your share of weekly and seasonal prizes.

Field Depth:
SPECIAL ADVISOR and CIVETTA are stakes winners, the latter also Grade 3-placed. NITROGEN is Grade 1-placed and CORRETO is Grade 2-placed. CORRETO, CIVETTA and NITROGEN have kept the strongest company lines.

Pace:
The pace looks modest, perhaps led by SMILE PO and GOOD LONG CRY on the far inside and outside, which sometimes can turn up the heat in a battle for position. CIVETTA and NITROGEN also figure to be in the first flight. No major pace advantages projected on paper.

Our Eyes:
Here are my horse-by-horse notes.

#1-SMILE PO: Lost her weapon when bumped at the start of the Wait a While and never got involved. Blazing drill for this indicates speed if she stays in the lineup; cross-entered in a local Sunday allowance on Tapeta.

#2-LOVE CERVERE: November debut sprint maiden winner gets tested for class and distance for reputable connections of Christophe Clement and Tyler Gaffalione. Half-brother won Woodbine's Grey around 2 turns off a light resume, so it's in the genes for this Into Mischief filly.

#3-FIXIN TO BEE: Draw a line through the Golden Rod on dirt and this turf-bred daughter of Mshawish is a real bounce-back candidate. Keeneland turf mile maiden break accomplished without any pace help up front. Should get a good trip with this post and Luis Saez riding well.

#4-CORRETO: Kentucky Downs debut winner was a solid third in the Grade 2 Ms. Grillo and not embarrassed when beaten 5 lengths in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. Full-sister to $1.3 million-earning turfer Spooky Channel should be heard from late.

#5-HELLO HELLO HELLO: Two-time Tapeta winner is cross-entered Sunday in a synthetic allowance and may fit better there. No threat when last seen in October in the Our Dear Peggy over this turf course and distance.

#6-DISCO STAR: New York-bred sprinter leaves the state-bred ranks, steps up off a maiden win and stretches out for the first time. That's a lot of firsts for the Mark Casse trainee, who returns her October winning rider Dylan Davis.

#7-SPECIAL AVIATOR: Unbeaten winner of the Our Dear Peggy Stakes is 2-for-2 (both routes). Rohan Crichton trainee hasn't run particularly fast, but got no pace help last time and just willed herself home.

#8-CIVETTA: Godolphin filly won the Wait a While at 4-5 odds and should vie for favoritism again under Irad Ortiz Jr. This is a tougher spot, but she's run 4 rock-solid races in as many tries for trainer Brendan Walsh.

#9-FORWARD DEPLOYED: $800,000 War Front purchase took 3 tries to break her maiden, graduating over this turf course December 8 at 12-1 odds. Don't see many Chad Brown trainees pay that kind of price. Dam Classic Fit was a solid stakes filly on dirt.

#10-NITROGEN: Immune to public opinion, she was third in the Grade 1 Natalma at 41-1 and third in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at 49-1. But expect a much shorter price on the Mark Casse trained daughter of Medaglia d'Oro. Showed a new dimension rallying at Del Mar after a troubled start, a feather in her cap of versatility.

#11-WINNING STREEP: 33-1 neck runner-up to Civetta in the Wait A While on November 28 when able to save ground early. Tougher trip projected from this post, but won from the 10-hole 2 starts back under return pilot Joe Bravo. Not without a chance.

#12-GOOD LONG CRY: John Velazquez likely has to use early gas from post 12, but this filly is my classic "nibbler breaks out" candidate. After 4 straight close losses, broke her maiden by 6-1/4 lengths and these kind often bounce back to repeat. The wide draw might help the price if you believe.

(AE) #13-LA GIOCONDA: Romping dirt sprint debut winner would add more pace to the mix if she draws into the field and opts to run. She's also cross-entered in a Sunday allowance like a few others in this lineup. Don't like first-time routers with speed from the widest draw if she plays here Saturday. Too often they don't handle that first bend.

Most Certain Exotics Contender:
CIVETTA is 4-for-4 in the superfecta, including a local turf stakes win, and doesn't have any outward flaws.

Best Longshot Exotics Contender:
SPECIAL AVIATOR was 10-1 in the Our Dear Peggy when pulling the upset and likely will remain an overlay after modest speed figures and connections that won't draw extra money.

$70 win GOOD LONG CRY. $5 exacta key-box GOOD LONG CRY with CIVETTA, NITROGEN and CORRETO ($30).

4th race – (6) El Guty is a firster from Pletcher who looks best here. (2) Back in Business steps up off a good second in his debut. (4) Gryphon can make his presence felt here. Betting strategy: 6 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-4-6.

6th race – (7) After Taxes was second last time and should graduate here. (1) Papa Golf will be a main factor from the rail. (2) Swirling Eights belongs in the exotics. (8) On the Mount is a firster who cannot be discounted. Betting strategy: 7 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-7-8.

8th race – (8) Just Relax has been racing in stakes and looks best here. (9) He’s a Beast debuts off some sharp works. (4) Flood Zone was second in his debut and should not be ignored. (7) Oleg will enjoy the cutback in distance. Betting strategy: 8 to win, place. Exacta box: 4-7-8-9.

10th race - (1) Guns Loaded exits a sharp win at Churchill Downs and could lead throughout from the rail. (4) Treaty of Rome was a solid maiden winner and should be a contender in this field. (8) Naughty Rascal has considerable stakes experience and should be battling to the end. (3) McKellen was a nice second in allowance company and may like the distance. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3-4-8.

3^rd race [OC 80k/C, 1 mi] – (3) Masmak (A) beat a stakes quality field last month and now has won two races in a row with a career best speed figure. (2) Ouster (A) has been off since May when he had a bad start, was rank racing in tight quarters, moved outside, and lost a head bob after battling down the stretch. (4) Winit ran a top speed figure last time and got claimed for $80,000 while getting passed at the end to lose by a nose. (1) Kinetic Sky was last seen in March after running in four stakes and winning the Stymie.

5^th race [NY, Md Sp Wt, 1 mi] – (6) Runamor (A) made his debut going a mile at 6-1, got off to a slow start, was unsettled under restraint, and faded. He gets a new rider and Lasix. (4) Tap It Easy moved from turf to dirt for his second start, got the lead, and lost by a head. He now gets blinkers and Lasix. (8) Roofer got to the lead in his second start and also finished in the place spot. (3) Outsource debuted on a muddy track in November, was slow to get running in a full field, and passed some horses late.

7^th race [NY, Alw 75000 N1X, 6 ? F] – (3) Embraceable Gal (A) in her first start for a new trainer she tossed her head at the start, was last, and rallied for second. (4) Evaluation was a first out winner at Saratoga for Chad Brown and has been off since an allowance try in August. (5) Ariana Rye made a big improvement in her start after a layoff winning a starter allowance on the front end. (2) Valentine Gift moved from turf to dirt and won a $25,000 claimer against open company.

8^th race [Jerome, 1 mi] – (3) Ican (A) went down to his nose at the break, then got bumped hard, and still ran second. (7) Studlydoright has been facing better competition than the rest of this field. His three wins include the Nashua at Aqueduct. (6) Cyclone State won his last two starts in one-turn miles at the Big A. (4) Omaha Omaha also won his last two races including an allowance by seven lengths.

Best bets: Masmak (3^rd); Embraceable Gal (7^th). Best Value: Runamor (5^th); Ican (8^th).

Race 8 at Aqueduct | Saturday January 4 | Post Time 3:39 PM Eastern

Jerome Stakes | Purse $150,000 | Three Year Olds | One Mile

Analysis and top contenders:

The Jerome Stakes kicks off the Road to the Wood Memorial in April on the New York Circuit, and technically the New York Road to the Kentucky Derby as well. Similar races today are the Mucho Macho Man Stakes at Gulfstream Park and the Smarty Jones Stakes at Oaklawn Park. The Jerome drew a field of eight and it appears up to FOUR of the eight are absolute need-the-lead types of which at least two, perhaps three, will battle for the lead on faster than average fractions and set up the stalkers and closers. Two of the four who appear to only be capable of running their best only when on the lead are Enduring Spirit (1) and Mansetti (2), who draw the inside posts and wear blinkers, so they will have to go fast early. The other two are Cyclone State (6), who led from start to finish four weeks ago at this mile trip at Aqueduct, and Georgia Magic (5), who won his only race (also at Aqueduct) leading from start to finish.

All that early pace sets up a trio of horses nicely, consisting of Ican (3), Studlydoright (7) and McAfee (8).

I’ll start with Ican (3), who finished second to Cyclone State four weeks ago when that one got an uncontested lead he will not get today. In addition, Ican stumbled badly at the start and lost about three lengths, so his effort was impressive. He’s a half-brother to Reasoned Analysis, who won the 2024 Bay Shore Stakes on the circuit, and we can expect a huge effort with a clean break in this race.

Studlydoright (7) is already proven at the level, having finished second in the Laurel Futurity in September and most importantly, after the addition of blinkers, winning the Nashua Stakes in November at the same one turn mile trip at Aqueduct. He tried two turns and the longer distance of a mile and one-eighth, as well as much tougher company, in the Grade 2 Remsen Stakes four weeks ago and didn’t do much running when fourth of six. Back around one turn and dropping in class Studlydoright has every right to run as well as he did when winning the Nashua.

McAfee (8) has run just twice but both were big efforts. He won his debut in November easily by three lengths in a field of 11 then when stretched out to this one turn mile trip near the end of November he rallied gamely from fourth to miss by a head on the wire. On the other hand, the winner, who McAfee was even with at the half-mile mark, went wide on the turn while McAfee got a rail trip. He’s trained by Richard Dutrow the same as Ican and is likely to be more heavily bet than his stablemate because he’s a half-brother to Thorpedo Anna.

Bets:

Win Bets – I want to consider Ican (3) for a win bet first, at odds of 5 to 2 or more. Both Studlydoright (7) and McAfee (8) can be considered for win bets around the same 5 to 2 odds, but I don’t think either will reach that threshold. If so, I would consider the one at the highest odds for a second win bet.

I like RAMBLIN' WRECK here. With one of the top jocks in terms of gains at the window, don't count this gelding out. Ran a sharp last race. Is difficult not to consider based on Equibase speed figs which have been formidable - 96 avg - of late. ECHO LANE - Quite good venture today with second time Lasix. With Saez aboard him, this colt will most likely be able to break out sharply for this event. HOT BLOODED - Must be given a chance here on the basis of the figures in the speed realm alone. Ortiz has a win percentage of 25 over the last month.

SINGULARITY - Araujo rode this mount for the first time last time out and comes right back in this race. Three consecutive improved speed figures (42-46-54) make this horse a dominant contender.

GERICAULT - This vulnerable equine hasn't been on the track since Nov 30th. Not even any drills. LONG ASTRIDE - This gelding hasn't had any positive outcomes in sprint affairs in the last couple months. Just cannot play this less than sharp equine. Didn't show me anything positive in the last race or on Nov 29th. Difficult to put any cash on this gelding on the win end. Likes to land in the money though. D MAJESTICAL - Didn't hit the board on Oct 30th at Charles Town. Followed it up with another less than stellar try. Generally I need a sprinter to have some success lately in short distance events in order to support him.
