Fair Grounds - Race #5

#4 Taco Cat Backwards	She made that big move and just went flat, but that wasn't a huge shock after she had already done a ton of work to get herself back in the race. More tactical trip should do in a modest race.
#8 Cheval B	Wouldn't be a surprise to see her land this one, but she has been just a bit one-paced late in those last two and might have to settle for an underneath share today.
#1 Armaleese	She has some inside pace that should keep her in the mix throughout in a race without a ton of other serious speed. She quit late last out, so I don't trust her a ton, but she could stick around with an easier lead.
Race Summary	Taco Cat Backwards made a sustained rally last out before flattening, but I think she'll find a much more tactical spot in today's race, and that move might be enough to get her home this time around.

Fair Grounds - Race #7

#11 X J Rascal	Mild worry about how he's going to come back off the long break while dropping in class, but there are some pretty tough customers in his company lines, and I think he handles these if he comes back running.
#9 Gentle Soul	Would have liked to see him wake up just a touch more last time out when getting in with claiming company, but this additional drop might be enough to get him home on his bit of back class alone.
#1 Optimus Kat	He just handled some of these last time out, and he should be in line for another good tracking trip while up close from the fence. He has done some pretty sharp work over this turf course, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him hold form off the good one last out.
Race Summary	X J Rascal has been away more than a year, but he was in with some good groups in California and looks like a snug fit in here if he feels up to running.

Fair Grounds - Race #10

#3 Munnings Castle	Think you can make an OK case for a few of these, but this one looks like a good fit here while returning off the Louisiana Downs summer races. He handled the track here in his graduation run a couple years back.
#9 Handsome Harold	Tough call. Something like his last probably makes him a player right back, but his form is all over the place and doesn't suggest a high probability of him running right back to that.
#8 Native Star	Dropper has been a good fit when racing with claimers in the past, and he could wake up today off the dud on the grass last out.
Race Summary	Munnings Castle has reliable enough form and owns a win over the course. He obviously has some issues with only the five races on his page in the last two years, but I bet he'll fire fresh again today.

Race Summary	GIMME MONEY stalked the pace on the outside in mid-pack but lacked late kick at 6-1/2F. But he earned favoritism off a game runner-up finish in the race prior at 6F, when he dueled 3-wide through the turn. He can revert to front-end tactics in this spot at a better price. Bet to win and place.

Sunland Park - Race #7

#6 RESTLESS MOVER (2-1)	Tries long sprint, seeks duplicate of 5-1/2F upset win at Zia off similar rest.
#3 ART CURATOR (7-2)	Returns to Sunland in top form, lone entrant with two wins at this distance.
#4 PRETTY PEPPY (3-1)	Waited on this spot in her last start but failed at odds-on against ‘Art.’
Race Summary	RESTLESS MOVER tracked the dueling leaders and blew past them for a runaway win at 5-1/2F. The lightly-raced 8-year-old tries a long sprint for the first time, but she can stalk and pounce from up close again and repeat. Bet to win and place and play 6-3 and 6-4 exactas.

Sunland Park - Race #8

#4 EVERYBODY KNOWS (12-1)	Projects ideal trip, can spring upset with well-timed bid.
#11 RONCHETTI (3-1)	Earned top speed fig in near miss, tactical speed comes in handy from post 11.
#5 COMFORT J BYRD (7-2)	Rallied for pair of seconds at Zia Park in six-day span recently.
Race Summary	EVERYBODY KNOWS, jostled between rivals early when second three starts back, was in 3-wide range of the leaders next out but settled for fourth as the favorites finished 1-2. He had a useful 6F return run and gets plenty of pace to rally into in this spot at a big price. Bet to win and place and play a 4-11 exacta box.

3^rd race [Clm 50000B, 6 ? F] – (4) Wake Surf (C) was bet down from 10-1 to 7-1 when he dropped into a claimer for the first time in a year, finished third last month with a big jump in speed figures, and got claimed for $35,000. (2) Daufuskie Island will drop into a claimer after running well in a series of first-level allowances. (6) J D Factor won a $25,000 claiming race by more than five lengths and then tried a starter allowance. (3) Life and Length has shown speed in recent allowances races and drops into a better spot.

4^th race [NY, Md 40000, 6F] – (4) One Vision (D) was bet down from 5-1 to 3-1 and ran into a sloppy track for the second time and did not run at all. He got claimed and comes back in two weeks. (7) Strand Road dropped into a maiden claimer after a four month layoff, got to the lead, and finished second with his best speed figure. He then tried an open company maiden special weight to no avail. (2) Dead Aim debuted last month in a maiden special weight that featured a very talented horse that is headed to the Kentucky Derby trail. (1) King Phoenix debuted at 3-1 in November, flashed speed, and got claimed for $40,000. He comes back with blinkers on and first-time Lasix.

5^th race [NY, OC 45k/N2X, 1 1/8 mi] – (5) Russian Realm was second at this level last time as a horse that only once has not run well and that was in the Empire Classic. (4) Neural Network missed by a nose in this type of race at Saratoga in August, has been off since September, and moves to a new barn. (1) Kolomino has two wins and a third in his last three starts including an allowance victory a month ago. (3) Quiet Wisdom won twice at Aqueduct in the Spring and returned from a seven month layoff. Now he shows up as a new gelding.

8^th race [NY, OC 80k/N1X, 6 ? F] – (5) Nina Kay won her first start in September and then moved to a state-bred stakes race to finish second behind the impressive unbeaten filly With the Angels. (4) Carmen’s Candy Jar will drop out of successful efforts in stakes races and into an allowance for the first time. (6) Boston’s Phinest finished ahead of the second choice two races back and will also make her first allowance start. (9) Princess Mischief is a late runner who has run her best two races in her last two starts.

Best bets: Wake Surf (3^rd); Russian Realm (5^th). Best value: One Vision (4^th); Nina Kay (8^th).

1st race – (3) Campaign Secret (B) was second in her debut despite a wide trip. Gets the win here. (9) City Taah adds blinkers and may like turf. (2) Starship Melody could be a factor in her debut. (10) Win After Win landed a tough post for her debut. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-9-10.

3rd race – (6) Royal Quality steps up a notch after a win and claim for a trainer who does well off the claim. (7) Remerton is also worth a look off a win and a claim. (2) Speed Control belongs in the exotics. (1) Winooski should be closing quickly at the end. Betting strategy: 6 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-6-7.

MARY KATHERINE - I like this thoroughbred. Should be familiar with this level since she ran against the same type last race out at Mahoning Valley Race Cour. This thoroughbred ran out of the money at Mahoning Valley Race Cour last out on a sloppy track. She should improve right here under normal track conditions. JACK'S YACHT QUEEN - This mare is in excellent physical condition right now. Finished second last time around the track and comes back promptly.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 SACRED CONNECTION (ML=9/5), #5 TORREY STREET (ML=3/1),

SACRED CONNECTION - I normally try to beat this kind of chalk. Long layoff and no drop in level of competition. This morning-line favorite hasn't been to the track in awhile. No drills since last race. TORREY STREET - Really don't think the last speed rating was obtained legitimately. The off conditions may have lead to such a high rating. The rating in the last race doesn't fit very well in this contest when I look at the class figure of today's race. Mark this horse as a likely underpriced contender.

RAYDEN AND REMI - This gelding is the longer price of the 'split' entry from the barn of Gelner. The return on investment when Geroux and Gelner team up is terrific. Have to give this gelding a chance. Ran a strong race last race out within the last 30 days. I think this gelding is ready to run a good one. He's had enough efforts since the vacation and should be fit. Three consecutive improved Equibase speed figures (38-48-70) make this one a strong contender. SOPHIE'S PAINTER - He must like the track here. Shipped in to take the money on December 6th and he looks tough once again.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 COATTAILS (ML=3/1), #5 AMPITUP (ML=7/2), #7 NIGHT STICK (ML=4/1),

COATTAILS - I don't normally play a chalk horse that hasn't been to the track in the last three weeks. AMPITUP - This thoroughbred just hasn't looked ready recently. Will be hard for this horse to beat this bunch off of that last speed figure. Not likely to improve enough to run a figure close to today's class rating, so put him on the vulnerable contenders list. NIGHT STICK - The effort in the last race on Dec 12th probably won't hold up against stiffer competition when they turn for home. Don't think this horse will do much running in today's event. That last speed figure was pedestrian when compared with today's class figure.

Earning some nice money in dirt sprint contests. TINY LAKE - Ought to go to the lead and should never look back.

The 80 avg class rating may give this gelding a distinct edge in the group of animals. This interesting entrant recorded a really strong TrackMaster Speed Rating last out. Looks to be going well to come right back. NORTHWEST YANKEE - His 84 avg has this gelding among the best speed figures for this race. The brain trust gives this nice horse a competitive chance to win this one, class numbers are tops in the field of horses. HERB - Many expert selectors will recognize the outstanding speed figure in the last outing. Stacks up against any horse in this bunch.
