3rd race – (5) Society Man should get a nice pace setup. (2) Stretch Ride could offer the biggest threat. (3) Digital Ops deserves a look after facing stakes rivals. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-5.

6th race – (1) Ninja Star can work out a winning trip from the rail. (9) Boppy O tends to finish second. (2) Adios Cole will be a threat on his best try. (5) Victory Achieved has thrived on Tapeta but can handle turf as well. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-5-9.

9th race – (1) Classify (A) comes off a big win and looks best here. (3) Comedy Town disappointed last time but can bounce back here. (6) Mish seems set for a strong effort. (7) Damon’s Mound is worth a look despite the layoff. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3-6-7.

11th race - (4) Abundance has a nice pedigree for turf and is the top pick. (5) Spirit of the Law should be closing quickly at the end. (12) Constitution Road is a big threat but drew a bad post. 1^st race [Clm 16000 N2L, 1 mi] – (7) Lem Me Drink (B) ran in traffic heading into the stretch and then went well to get third. (3) Wild Iris broke her maiden two races back going seven furlongs for a $20,000 tag and then was two lengths behind in a starter allowance. (2) Accelerina had the lead in a similar spot, drifted out in the stretch, and got beat by a nose. (6) Political Spin was a winner two weeks ago of a $20,000 maiden race where he closed from a stalking position.

7^th race [Alw 82000 N1X, 6 ? F] – (1) Radio Red and (1A) Crazy Mason make a Reeves Thoroughbred entry and both should be considered win contenders. Crazy Mason was fourth in an allowance following a six month layoff from a third in the Long Branch at Monmouth Park. (4) Quick to Accuse has a pair of allowance second-place finishes and regular rider Manny Franco stays on board. (5) Beaver State has two wins and a second in his last three races moving from a maiden claiming win to a second and a first in starter allowances. (6) Silo Ridge returns from a year off as a new gelding. He won a maiden special weight and was second in an allowance and has been away since a fourth in February.

8^th race [Busanda, 1 1/8 mi] – (9) Running Away began his career with two turf races where she ran second at Saratoga and third by a neck at Keeneland. Moving to the dirt, she broke her maiden by five lengths at Churchill going long. (3) Ramify won her only start last month rallying from far behind in last while racing greenly. (8) Bernieandtherose won her last two starts after finishing third in her debut. Those victories were against NY-breds by a combined 14 lengths while increasing from seven furlongs to a mile. (1) Sharp Smile broke her maiden in her third start for Brad Cox.

9^th race [NY, Md 25000, 6F] – (3) Vamonos Vamonos (C) was bet down from 5-1 to be the 5-2 favorite, got to the lead from the far outside post in a full field, finished second well clear of the rest of the field, and got claimed. (6) Cada Dia Mejor was third in his first start at this level after a very wide trip. (9) Monte Avi has been running for a $40,000 tag where he was third twice recently. (4) Whiskey Frens drops out of two starts in maiden special weights for Rick Dutrow.

Best bets: Reeves entry (7^th); Running Away (8^th). Best Value: Lem Me Drink (1^st); Vamonos Vamonos (9^th).

Derby Prep Hotlist - The Lecomte | January 18, 2025

The $250,000 Lecomte (G3), Fair Grounds

Race 12 – The 1 1/16 mile Lecomte is the second of four stops on the Fair Grounds road to the 2024 Kentucky Derby with qualifying points [20-10-6-4-2] that are available to the top five finishers. Five horses in this full field of 14 have already earned some Derby points. (4) Magnitude ran at the Lecomte distance in his last two starts. In the Gun Runner, which is the first Derby prep race at the New Orleans track, he pressed the eventual winner and finished second well clear of the rest of the field. The Lecomte post-position draw was in his favor as the Gun Runner winner Built drew the 13 spot in the starting gate. (6) Golden Afternoon will move from turf to dirt after three impressive races on the grass. He was a debut winner in a rich maiden race at Kentucky Downs by almost three lengths. He was then second in the Bourbon (G2) at Keeneland ahead of a horse that won his next start. In November he won an allowance at Fair Grounds. With morning line odds of 20-1 it is worth a play. (13) Built is the horse to beat with an impressive maiden win followed by the Gun Runner victory in his last two starts, but the no. 13 post position will make it very hard to win the race. (3) Admiral Dennis was the favorite in all three of his races. He had troubled trips in his first start and still finished third and then in the Gun Runner he stumbled out of the gate. His maiden victory by more than three lengths was at Churchill going a mile. Betting strategy: Exacta box: 3, 4, 6, 13.

Race 12 at Fair Grounds | Saturday January 18 | Post Time 6:30 PM Eastern

Lecomte Stakes – Grade 3 | Purse $250,000 | Three Year Olds | One Mile and One Sixteenth

Analysis and top contenders:

Innovator (1) is the horse the rest of the field will likely have to catch to win this year’s Lecomte Stakes. The son of 2020 Kentucky Derby winner Authentic has won just one of seven races to date but has finished second in four other races. Last summer when he was still a maiden and coming off a pair of runner-up efforts, Innovator ran in the Hopeful Stakes but was bumped hard at the break and did not get a good early position, losing any chance he had. Moved back to the maiden ranks in late November, Innovator ran too well to lose, coming up a head short on the wire and earning a strong 97 Equibase Speed Figure. The winner of that race was the highly regarded Barnes, who won the San Vicente Stakes on January 4 in only the second start of his career. Still very highly regarded by his Hall-of-Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who won the 2013 Lecomte with Oxbow, Innovator ran in the Advent Stakes on December 6, leading from the start and finishing second with a 95 figure. Returning three weeks later on December 29 and returned to the maiden ranks, Innovator sailed along on an easy early lead and held on by a neck to win, earning a career-best 101 figure which is the highest figure earned by any horse in this field. Drawing the ground saving rail for the Lecomte, Innovator is likely to be sent to the front as usual and could establish an easy early lead. Based on his pedigree, Innovator should have no problem running as well at this distance as he did in the shorter race last time out, because not only is he a son of a Derby winner, but his dam produced Carmel Road, who won at a mile then was second at this distance in the 2022 Los Alamitos Futurity. Given all the above, Innovator is the one to catch, and to beat, in this year’s Lecomte.

Disco Time (11) is unbeaten and untested in two races to date, the most recent of which earned a 96 figure. That effort, in a one-turn mile race at Churchill Downs at the end of November, is likely to be improved upon as he makes his third career start. Disco Time has drawn the 11 post for the Lecomte, which might be disadvantageous, but appears to have enough tactical speed to get a decent position before the first turn without losing too much ground. Per a Race Lens query, trainer Brad Cox has an extremely good record in dirt route stakes races for three-year-old males the past five years, winning 49 of 146 (34%). With the number one jockey for the barn, Florent Geroux, in the saddle, Disco Time appears to be a strong contender in this field.

Dapper Moon (9) shipped in from Kentucky to prep for this race last month. In his first start over the track, on December 19, Dapper Moon relaxed in third in the early stages of a six-furlong sprint then moved to lead easily, earning a career-best 98 figure in the process. Prior to that he finished fourth in three straight top races for two-year-olds, including the Street Sense Stakes at this distance. In that race, Dapper Moon began fifth then moved up aggressively to lead by a half-length with an eighth of a mile to go, before tiring. Now that he’s in winning form, and with a 98 last race figure very close to the 101 top contender Innovator earned in his most recent start, Dapper Moon must be respected when considering our wagers in this race.

Built (13) took advantage of the fact betting favorite Admiral Dennis stumbled at the start in the Gun Runner Stakes at Fair Grounds four weeks ago, establishing an easy lead in a field of five and extending his margin throughout the race. The 95 figure was a career best and a nice improvement off the 88-figure earned two months earlier, so can be improved upon again, which makes the colt a contender. On the other hand, Built appears unlikely to be anywhere near the early lead in this race on fractions of 24.6, 49.2 and 1:13.6 as he set in the Gun Runner. Built drew the rail in the Gun Runner and gets the 13 post for the Lecomte, which could be disadvantageous as he will likely try for a good early position before the first time but will find himself going wide. However, if he can establish a mid-pack position without losing too much ground, Built could be competitive once again.

Tough Catch (8) is trained by Dallas Stewart the same as Dapper Moon and just won the six-furlong Sugar Bowl Stakes after a pair of runner-up finishes in sprint stakes. He opens at 10 to 1 and coming off 96 and 90 figures could get a piece of the purse once again. Similarly, Magnitude (4) is a horse to consider for exacta tickets, as both his two-turn races have been good ones. He won in November at the distance with an 89 figure then although no match for lone front runner Built last month in the Gun Runner, he held his own. Jose Ortiz stays aboard, and he could get a good stalking trip from the inside and be in the money again.

Bets:

Win Bets – There should be superb value on both Innovator (1) and on Disco Time (11) and I would not hesitate betting either, or both, to win at odds of 3 to 1 or more.

Dapper Moon (9) may also offer odds well above the 4 to 1 I think are fair for considering a win bet (as he opens at 12 to 1) so I might consider a win bet on him as well.

Built (13) starts at 3 to 1 odds too low to consider for a win bet in this field with multiple contenders, particularly from an extreme outside post.

If any of the three top contenders should scratch, I might consider Tough Catch (8) at odds of 5 to 1 or more.

Exacta: I think the key to profit lies in Innovator (1) finishing first or second, as he’s done in five of his last six races. Therefore, the best exacta is a “Key Box” with Innovator in both the first and second positions, with a few other horses, as follows:

Innovator (1) over Magnitude (4), Tough Catch (8), Dapper Moon (9), Disco Time (11) and Built (13).

Magnitude (4), Tough Catch (8), Dapper Moon (9), Disco Time (11) and Built (13) over Innovator (1).

BYK - Any horse with early speed that is starting from the inside has a shot on this track. Should jump out of the gate and get good position versus this group. This jockey/conditioner duo has been producing a very profitable ROI, right at +166. SIR ALFRED JAMES - This pace horse could take the lead quickly. My guess is he'll take a shot at going gate to wire in victory. TrackMaster keeps good stats on this type of information. This gelding always seems to race well after a vacation. I like this gelding. Has the topmost earnings per start in this contest. I always like to see a thoroughbred getting Lasix for the first time. Farrior adds it on this one today. MOTIVATING - I'm figuring this magnificent animal to run a good one today. ZEN MASTER - The morning line odds on this gelding are higher than those of the other entrant from the shedrow of handler Farrior. Often the longer-priced part of a 'split' entry wins. This gelding is in good form. Ended up third on Dec 28th. This jockey fits well with this horse. The gelding and Hiraldo together win at a rate of 67 percent.
