Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    February 3, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

Yonkers Raceway starts the week with an 11-race card. The $1.00 Pick 5 rolls in Race 5, and it has a $10,000 guaranteed pool. The $2 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 8, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 8 (9:05 PM EST)

5-Orlando Blue A (3/2)-This is the 1st start for the Engblom barn off a claim. Did win 2 straight for the Dilloian stable and will look for the winning ways to continue. Jason Bartlett should land on the point and make every call a winning one as an odds-on favorite.

    Race 9 (9:25 PM EST)

1-My Ultimate Byron A (8-1)-The Bucci trainee makes the 2nd start off the bench and takes a good drop after facing Invites. Has the rail, plus a back-class edge on some of these and should offer a nice return. Steve Smith could get on the point when the wings fold and could be tough to tackle.
3-Sport Secret (7/5)-Rolled the back half in 56.1 to take a picture as a big chalk and now steps up. When Jason Bartlett steers for trainer Jeff Cullipher he posts 33% winners. Should be rolling hard coming off cover and this race could have a lively pace.
5-Whats Stanley Got A (9/2)-Comes off an even effort versus Invites to finish 3rd last week in the first start since 12-16. Brent Holland gets the call again for Cory Stratton and he sticks. It is a competitive affair and this is another who could be the best late in the mile.

    Race 10 (9:45 PM EST)

1-Deetzy (6-1)-Used the veteran from the rail last week, and he went right to the top but faded under some quick fractions. Drops, to a level for a picture, and will try again versus this kind.
2-Twin B Heart Throb (4-1)-Finished 2nd leaving from post 8 against a well-meant winner in the 1st start back in town. Gets significant post relief and could make the most of a cozy trip.
4-Ever Hoping A (5/2)-Beaten chalk didn't get off the gate as quickly as needed in last. Started from the 1-hole and will look for a more aggressive steer. This will be the 3rd start in sequence at YR and should offer a better price tonight.

    Race 11 (10:05 PM EST)

2-Smiffy's Terror N (3-1)-Tried Lasix for the 1st time last week and rolled the back half in .55 to just get up in time. New Zealand bred steps up but best to not overlook, might just be starting to get good.
3-Layton Hanover (2-1)-Alexander trainee loves to win and just missed last week in his 1st start in town. That effort came against the Invites. Now lands in a nice spot to take a picture and is the one to beat.

    $2 Late Pick 4

    5/1,3,5/1,2,4/2,3
    Total Bet=$36

      Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

      Parx - Race #1
#4 BIG BEEMSTER (5-2) Adapted well to ‘lead’ role in near miss, can rate, cycling to another good try.
#8 RUN CORY RUN (3-1) Stands 8/2-3-3 in dirt routes in the last seven months, changes barns again.
#1 DR BAYTER (7-2) Ran second to fave off similar rest in the fall, has been burning money since then.
Race Summary BIG BEEMSTER set an honest pace and led until the favorite caught him in the final strides. He ended a long winless drought in the race prior at 7F with Sanchez aboard and he has shown a passing gear going a route of ground before. Bet to win and place and play 4-1 and 4-8 exactas.
      Parx - Race #2
#1 HUGGY (5-1) Long series of steady workouts, barn going well of late, must get away clean from rail.
#2 CENTAUR CENTRAL (5-2) Beaten favorite in long and short MSW sprints in December.
#5 CURIOUS SOUL (9-5) Pressed 7-2 winner for a half mile and finished third as a gelding.
Race Summary HUGGY worked well from the Parx gate in the four months leading to his debut and he should offer good value for a reliable first-out barn as the co-light weight in the field. Bet to win and place and play a 1/2, 5/ALL trifecta.
      Parx - Race #4
#3 JADON’S HONOR (3-1) Been idle since deceptively good debut, today’s Best Bet.
#2 COACH KNIGHT (6-1) Can be excused for ‘unruly’ behavior in debut, takes class plunge.
#4 MAVIS MISCHIEF (5-2) Good speed but has been unable to carry it in shorter sprints.
Race Summary JADON’S HONOR tugged his way to mid-pack after he broke awkwardly from the rail in his debut, then finished very willing on the inside to grab the show spot. He hasn’t raced in four months since that race, but he gets Lasix for his seasonal debut and runs for half the price. Bet to win and place and play a 3-ALL exacta.
      Turf Paradise - Race #2
#5 QUEEN POPPY (5-1) Speed threat at a decent price with first-time Lasix for new connections.
#4 SMOOCHERRO (6-1) Worth long look off pair of strong gate works at the track for her debut.
#3 HINT OF FRIPPERY (5-1) Showed marked improvement on turf, switches back to dirt.
Race Summary QUEEN POPPY pressed the runner-up and ‘loomed a threat’ at the quarter pole before tiring at 6F at Pleasanton. She starts fresh for a 22-percent barn with maiden claimers and can maximize her speed in this field. Bet to win and place and play a 3-4-5 exacta box.
      Turf Paradise - Race #4
#2 G G GILLEY (5-1) Dead game in narrow setback last out, still no workouts since October.
#3 BROWNSTONE (5-2) ‘Sustained battle’ at 6-1/2F, looms short price despite layoff and barn switch.
#6 BEAU’S CHARM (9-2) Arizona-bred showing promise in long series of mornings workouts.
Race Summary G G GILLEY just missed after a stretch-long duel with the 1-to-2 favorite at 6F. He picks up 5 pounds on the jockey change and will need his A-game to win in a deep field at this level. Bet to win and place and play a 2,3/2,3,6/ALL trifecta.
      Turf Paradise - Race #5
#1 DELIA (2-1) Ended long winless drought but can return quick claim dividend in ideal spot.
#7 CHARMANT E (8-1) Gets class relief, piled up the checks for barn that re-claimed her recently.
#2 CHROME’S BEST COPY (7 Was on wrong end of photo finishes in last three tries at distance.
Race Summary DELIA surged 6-wide in the stretch to catch a drifting CHROME’S BEST COPY for a popular victory. The lightly-raced 6-year-old draws the rail today and is perfectly spotted off the Evans claim to build on her $83k 6F bankroll. Bet to win and place and play 1-2 and 1-7 exactas.

Race 2 - Maiden Claiming - 6.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $32000 Class Rating: 59

            RECOMMENDED CHOICES

            # 5 CURIOUS SOUL 9/5
CENTAUR CENTRAL has a very good shot to take this race. Is tough not to look at based on Equibase Speed Figures which have been solid - 53 avg - of late. Don't overlook this colt in your wagers - very dangerous with Castillo aboard. The average Equibase class rating alone makes this horse a solid choice. AIRMAN TREVOR - The Lasix change (on Lasix) may spark a turnaround for this colt. CURIOUS SOUL - He has put up very strong figures under today's conditions and will probably fare well against this group. Very strong jockey and handler combo winning 19 percent of their races working together.

              Turf Paradise - Race #5 - Post: 2:25pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $13,000 Class Rating: 80

              Rating:

              #7 CHARMANT E (ML=8/1)
              #1 DELIA (ML=2/1)
              #5 CONFIDENCE BUILDER (ML=9/2)

CHARMANT E - I think this mare is very sharp right now. I like the fact that McCartney brings her back to a race so quickly. Personally, I wouldn't worry about where she finished in her last race (fifth). Should rebound right here, with some pretty good odds. DELIA - When Evans gives Lopez a leg up on any horse, you have to feel that with their win pct you have more than a fighting chance. This horse coming off a sharp try in the last month is a solid contender in my humble opinion. Mare took a little vacation, but has been racing into shape. Earnings per start is something that I think can be a crucial handicapping aspect. This animal is ranked number one in this group. CONFIDENCE BUILDER - Hernandez brings her back again. I recommend you stick with this strong mare.

              Vulnerable Contenders: #2 CHROME'S BEST COPY (ML=7/2), #4 VELLA (ML=5/1), #6 UNIFIED A. P. (ML=6/1),

CHROME'S BEST COPY - This mare is always hitting the board, but just doesn't win. Tough to invest in her on the top end. Earned a disappointing speed figure in the last race in an $8,000 Claiming race on January 16th. Unlikely to see an improved performance off of that figure. VELLA - Looked good on Dec 27th, finishing first, but no drills since is a bit troublesome. UNIFIED A. P. - Notched a somewhat easily forgotten rating in the last race in a $4,000 Claiming race on Jan 13th. Doubtful to see an improved performance off of that figure.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - CHARMANT E - Racing pattern would suggest this horse is conditioned well for today's race. I'd expect a strong performance.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #7 CHARMANT E to win if you can get at least 3/1 odds

Mahoning Valley Race Course - Race #7 - Post: 3:03pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $12,100 Class Rating: 78

                Rating:

                #4 EPIC KNIGHT (ML=3/1)
                #1 TORREFACTOR (ML=9/2)

EPIC KNIGHT - Looking at today's class figure, this thoroughbred is up against an easier group than last time around the track at Turfway Park. TORREFACTOR - This gelding is in top condition right now. Ran second last race out and comes back soon. I think that the addition of the 'shades' today will keep his mind on the race at hand.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #8 SAGE RUNNER (ML=7/2), #5 BIG ELM (ML=5/1), #7 LT'S JACKNTHEBOX (ML=6/1),

SAGE RUNNER - You believe this equine is going to be first just because he's always close. Just doesn't win often. BIG ELM - You figure that this horse is going to be first just because he's always close. Just doesn't get the job done often. Tough to like the downward flow (77/74/57) of speed figs. LT'S JACKNTHEBOX - This horse doesn't have a winner's demeanor. Regularly finishes in the place and show hole. Ran a great speed figure last out, but the battle will probably take too much out of him.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #4 EPIC KNIGHT to win. Have to have odds of at least 7/5 or better though

                    # 3 PATTERN BET 7/2
                    # 9 SHE BE SHEEHAN 6/1
I've got to go with LADY ASTRID. Has been moving in the most competitive company of the group of horses as of late. Cline has this mare racing well and is a very good choice based on the solid speed figs posted in sprint races lately. Is a solid choice - given the 77 speed figure from her most recent race. PATTERN BET - She has been running strongly and the Equibase Speed Figures are among the best in this group of horses. Profitable jockey and conditioner team, with a +4 return on investment. SHE BE SHEEHAN - Will probably come out strong - I have liked the way this mare has moved swiftly to the front end recently. Handler boasts solid win figs at this distance and surface.

                      Oaklawn Park - Race #6 - Post: 3:01pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $40,000 Class Rating: 72

                      Rating:

                      #7 TIMBAVATI (ML=5/2)

TIMBAVATI - It looks like Jara had to know this mare on Dec 21st when riding her for the first time. Back on board again today. Faces state bred foes today after finishing seventh versus 'open' company on December 21st. Looking at today's class figure, this horse is meeting an easier bunch than last time around the track at Oaklawn Park.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 FLY LIKE THE WIND (ML=3/1), #9 SASSY LASS (ML=9/2), #4 STHENIC (ML=6/1),

FLY LIKE THE WIND - Can't play this racer in today's sprint of 6 furlongs. Hasn't even finished in the money in a short distance clash lately. May bounce off of that last strong exertion. SASSY LASS - This steed hasn't been close at the wire of late.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #7 TIMBAVATI is the play if we get odds of 1/1 or better
                      EXACTA WAGERS: 7 with 6

                          # 6 ON TIME TAM 8/1
I think STELLZONE is a very good choice. Has performed soundly lately in sprint races, posting a nifty 52 avg speed figure. Have to take a chance on this filly with the sound earnings per start in dirt sprint races. QUEEN POPPY - Should wake up with Lasix change (on Lasix) today. As of late Rarick has provided players with a very good winning percentage with horses running in dirt sprint races. ON TIME TAM - This filly is coming back almost immediately to the track. Must be given a shot given the class of races run recently.
