Meet the Contenders: Bayakoa Stakes at Oaklawn Park | Saturday

The road to Oaklawn’s prestigious Grade 1 Apple Blossom winds through the Grade 3 $250,000 Bayakoa Stakes on Saturday. Named for the 1989 Apple Blossom winner Bayakoa, who won the Breeders’ Cup Distaff later that season and again in 1990, Saturday's feature in Hot Springs, Ark. matches older fillies and mares over 1-1/16 miles.

Let’s meet the contenders for Saturday’s Bayakoa (Race 9):

#1-CORNINGSTONE: Looks to continue her current run of winning Oaklawn’s Mistletoe and Pippin Stakes in succession. Trainer Kenny McPeek has a meet-best 3 stakes winners this Oaklawn season, while jockey Julien Leparoux leads all riders with 4 stakes wins. Indiana-bred mare by Kantharos was stakes-placed in the Grade 3 Houston Ladies Classic and Grade 2 Locust Grove last year and seeks her first graded-stakes victory.

#2-WILD BOUT HILARY: Wire-to-wire winner of Fair Grounds’ Pago Hop Stakes most recently over a sloppy track. She’s won 2 of her last 3, both wet track races that were originally slated for the turf. New Orleans-based filly by Midnight Lute has flashed back-to-back bullet FG workouts for her first Oaklawn road trip. C.J. McMahon rides in this 4-year-old’s first graded-stakes bid.

#3-LITTLE JAMIE: Tampa Bay Downs’ last-out Wayward Lass winner makes her first Oaklawn start since breaking her maiden locally last March. Robbie Medina trains the Grade 3 Indiana Oaks runner-up and Grade 3 Monmouth Oaks third-place finisher. Jockey Ramon Vazquez won the 2022 Bayakoa aboard Miss Bigly and currently has ridden 3 stakes winners at the Oaklawn meet.

#4-BOW DRAW: Mare by 2013 Preakness winner Oxbow, who was second at Oaklawn in the Rebel earlier that spring, looks to snap a 6-race losing streak and register her first career stakes victory. Third in the Mistletoe and fourth in the Pippin already this Oaklawn meet, finishing more than 5 lengths behind Bayakoa rival Corningstone in both. Rocco Bowen rides for Henry West, Jr.

#5-FREE LIKE A GIRL: 21-time winner has been a Louisiana-bred stakes stalwart, earning $2.1 million despite just a $5,500 initial sales purchase price. Now age 6, she returns to Oaklawn for the first time since finishing third in last April’s Grade 1 Apple Blossom. Chasey Pomier trainee exits a fourth-place finish in the Grade 3 Houston Ladies Classic. Jockey Ricardo Santana Jr. is a 2-time Bayakoa winner (2017 Terra Promessa, 2019 She’s a Julie).

#6-LOVED: Expected favorite returns from her Grade 3 Falls City victory at Churchill Downs on Thanksgiving Day. That was the Godolphin-owned filly’s first graded stakes win and evened her record at 5 wins from 10 starts. Brendan Walsh trains the daughter of Medaglia d’Oro, who has been based this winter at Turfway Park on the Tapeta. Gulfstream-based jockey Tyler Gaffalione makes his first Oaklawn appearance of the meeting.

Fair Grounds - Race #1

#5 He's a Real Outfit	He's one of the interesting new faces in here, so get a look at him on the tote and track ahead of this. Think some of the logical ones on paper in here have questions to answer.
#11 Romeo Spikes	He'll need some scratch help to draw in, but he at least brings some reliable form from Delta with him to what would be his turf debut. Threat if he goes on either surface.
#7 The Wicked Cat	He goes second out after making a mild middle move in the December debut on the main track. He was pretty live on the board that day, so it's reasonable enough to assume he'll be well-meant here at second asking.
Race Summary	He's a Real Outfit has an appealing enough pedigree for this short turf trip, and I'm not 100% sold on some of the logical players bringing Delta form with them.

Fair Grounds - Race #4

#4 Sight	He's meeting a couple of fairly serious players in here, but I really liked his debut score when going short, and and he has some clear upside while getting back around one turn today. Don't blame them for having taken the two-turn shot at this point in the season with a 3-year-old.
#2 Dapper Moon	Tough call for me -- he tracked the pace and faded with much better in that Grade III Lecomte try last month, and his two lifetime sprint races both produced nice wins. The one to beat, but I'm guessing the price will reflect that.
#6 Lil Muggs	He has been pretty reliable through the four starts on his page, and he caught the future Lecomte winner in that late November Churchill run. Obvious threat on form and company.
Race Summary	Sight cuts back after a failed route try, and that gives him some chance to wake up today at a midrange price. He should find a perfect, spying trip.

Fair Grounds - Race #8

#2 Mardi Gras Mambo	Solid lean here to close the card in a spot where it appears he's the only serious sprint pace lined up. There are a couple of other potential forward players, but I'm not sure they have the same kind of committed pace he does, and he could be gone if he shakes them off on the turn.
#7 Scootin' Boots	That two-back run represented some improvement, and he has some room to bounce back while returning to the local footing after the dull Delta try with better. Seems like the most interesting alternative.
#1 Temple of Peace	He's getting a bit short on excuses at this point, but the recent form is pretty honest, and that alone makes him a threat in this soft spot.
Race Summary	Mardi Gras Mambo probably gets bet a little bit in here, but I think he's quick enough to turn away the other potential early challenges and find enough to hold off any late threats.

Race Summary	ALLEY OOP JOHNNY bumped an outer rival at the start, advanced 3-wide and dueled inside the odds-on favorite in the final 1/8th of a mile in a longer grass route race. He makes his second start since August for a Canada-based barn that is enjoying a big meet in south Florida. Bet to win and place and play 7-6, 7-8 and 7-10 exactas.

Gulfstream Park - Race #2

#12 FIRST SHOT FIRED (4-1)	Seeks duplicate of last pair for new connections, post the concern.
#8 BOURBON OUTLAW (9-2)	Out-kicked by winning fave, ran third for higher tag, gets pace to run at.
#1 DEVILMENT (6-1)	Two seconds and a third in last four long-distance tests, draws rail.
Race Summary	FIRST SHOT FIRED made moves to lead at the stretch call in his last two route races, but he couldn’t contain the late-running favorite from post 10 last out and was denied by a stubborn pace setter after he ‘had command’ two starts ago. The same move could lead to the winners’ circle if he can negotiate post 12. Bet to win and place and play a 1-8-12 exacta box.

Gulfstream Park - Race #5

#3 DOVE IN CHARGE (10-1)	Disappointed in latest, but can’t be discounted at inflated price.
#2 MIGUEL’S BELLE (5-2)	Two wins and a troubled third in last three 6F starts, versatility a plus.
#1 FOXY LADY (4-1)	Awakened with blinkers, second in blanket finish at 18-1, draws the rail again.
Race Summary	DOVE IN CHARGE was outrun in the same spot in her seasonal debut, but she finished in the money in her previous two 6F sprints on the Gulfstream dirt, both in her second start off similar rest. She was re-claimed by Fawkes for $10,000 in the fall and tries to join the $100k Club with Saez aboard for the first time. Bet to win and place and play 3-1 and 3-2 exactas.

1^st race [NY, Md Sp Wt, 7F] – (3) Miss American Pie (B) raced nine-wide in her debut and finished third at 5-1.

(1A) Forever to Go (C) was bet down from 8-1 to 9-2 and lost a stretch battle to a heavy debut favorite for her third second-place finish in a row. (5) Moonlight Ready will make her first start with an extensive work tab for the Clement barn. (7) Mega Charger also debuts for a trainer with good numbers with firsters.

2^nd race [NY, Damon Runyon, 7F] – (2) Sand Devil (A) won his first two starts by a combined margin of more than 16 lengths. (5) National Identity was second by a nose behind a very good horse in a NY Stallion Series race. (1) Soontobeking was an allowance winner by a nose with a stalking trip. (4) Fireballin gets blinkers on for his third start. He was a debut winner and then was fourth behind the 5 horse in that stakes race.

3^rd race [East View, 7F] – (4) Bernieandtherose won her last two starts by a combined 14 lengths in November moving from a maiden to an allowance. (1) Na?ve Melody shipped up to New York from Kentucky to be a front-end maiden winner at first asking as the 6-5 favorite. (5) Straca made a huge improvement in her third start to break her maiden by more than six lengths. (2) Boston’s Phinest has a second and a fourth in state-bred stakes races for Chad Brown.

6^th race [Md Sp Wt, 6 ? F] – (11) She’s Complicated (B) got taken up early in her first start, made a fast middle move up the rail, finished second at 5-2, and gets first-time Lasix for Bill Mott. (2) Paula’s a Star (A) finished third in her debut racing against the boys back in May at 7-2. (8) Delaware Devil will make her second start for Linda Rice which usually means there will be a significant improvement. (6) Tremendous Bee is a first-time starter that sold for $135,000 at auction by a stallion with a $5,000 stud fee.

race 11 – The Sam F. Davis drew a field of ten 3-year-olds that will take their chance on the Kentucky Derby trail with qualifying points of 20-10-6-4-2 available to the top five eligible finishers. There are three horses in the field that have earned Derby qualifying points thus far. (1) Camp Hale will be a long shot in this interesting field in the Sam F. Davis. The home-bred son of Mo Town is still a maiden after three second-place finishes. Each time he faced quality 3-year-olds that on their own are capable of running on the Derby trail. Patch Adams ran in the Southwest (G3) after a runaway maiden victory, Guns Loaded was in the Holy Bull (G3), and Grande was an impressive debt winner for Todd Pletcher at Gulfstream Park. (6) Owen Almighty crossed the wire in front in 3 of his 4 starts. Last time he was disqualified from first in the Pasco and placed fifth when he interfered with a horse that was not a factor in the outcome of the race. That seven-furlong run will have him in top form for this test. (7) Poster is undefeated in three starts with a victory on the Derby trail in the Remsen (G2) at Aqueduct in December going nine furlongs around two turns. This will be his 3-year-old debut. (3) John Hancock was an impressive first-out winner for Brad Cox at Tampa last month as the 8-5 favorite. Betting strategy: Exacta box: 1, 3, 6, 7. Trifecta box: 1, 3, 6, 7.

Race 9 at Tampa Bay Downs | Saturday February 8 | Post Time 4:14 PM Eastern

Suncoast Stakes | Purse $150,000 | Fillies, Three Years Olds | One Mile and Forty Yards

Analysis and top contenders:

In this pretty solid field for three-year-old fillies on the Road to the Kentucky Oaks, Her Laugh (4) is one of three that appear talented and capable of winning. She won her debut at six furlongs on November but it was her second start, her most recent, which was incredibly impressive. That was in the Untapable Stakes at Fair Grounds on December 21, in which Her Laugh established the early pace in front from the start and got stronger and stronger as the race went on, before coasting home unchallenged to a two and one-half length win. That race was run at one mile and seventy yards, nearly identical to the distance of this race, and the filly is likely to run even better as this will be her third career start and second race in a row around two turns. Although Her Laugh won the Untapable leading from start to finish, she is not necessarily a need-the-lead type, as her debut win came in very mature fashion as she was fourth after a quarter mile and third after a half mile before moving up quickly to lead entering the stretch. Considering the 85 Equibase Speed Figure earned is the best two-turn figure in the field among the few that have run this far, and considering Irad Ortiz, Jr., who did not ride her in her first two starts, comes over from Gulfstream (where he’s been riding nearly every day) to ride, suggests Her Laugh will be very tough to beat in this situation.

That being said, newly turned three-year-olds can improve markedly from one race to the next and that gives Junta (5) a nice shot as she won in her debut the same as Her Laugh did before winning the Untapable. Junta earned her win here at Tampa so has familiarity Her Laugh lacks, but the win came at seven furlongs, so Her Laugh has familiarity with two turns which Junta lacks. Just the same, the 85 Equibase Speed Figure earned is the same as Her Laugh and this filly can be expected to improve solidly off the experience of a race. Like Her Laugh in her sprint debut, Junta ran a very mature race in her debut when relaxed in third then second in the opening stages so she could be in a great position to win turning for home once again.

Italian Soiree (3) also won in her first start, last July, also a sprint. She was second in the Adirondack Stakes (also a sprint) last August in her second start then stretched out to two turns and moved to grass for her next two. Although she didn’t win, finishing fourth of 11 in the Grade 1 Natalma Stakes then fifth of 11 in the Grade 2 Jessamine Stakes, neither effort was disgraceful at all. She returns as a three-year-old with blinkers on to help her focus and with a string of excellent morning workouts on the dirt at Tampa Bay Downs, suggesting she’s been pointing to this race since last fall. Red Hot Flavien Prat rides and Italian Soiree has a pedigree for routing on dirt as a half-sister to Be Better, who won a stakes at one mile and one-eighth. As such, and particularly as she may come in under the radar of some bettors, Italian Soiree should be respected when considering wagers we make in this race.

Honorable mention goes to La Cara (6), who won the Grade 3 Pocohontas Stakes in September of last year before a fifth of nine finish, beaten 10 lengths, in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. The Pocohontas was run at a mile around one turn and it could have been she was just overmatched in the Breeders’ Cup, so she deserves a look, but I think she may need a race before her best considering the three-month layoff and the fact the top two contenders easy ran much more recently. Similarly, Dancing Music (2) won the seven-furlong Gasparilla Stakes last month and could get up for a piece, as could easy seven length winner (on grass) Deloraine (1) and recent maiden winner around two-turns at Tampa, Queen in the Deck (7).

Bets:

Win Bets: Her Laugh (4), being the most probable to win, should be considered at 2 to 1 or more.

Junta (5) might be considered for a win bet at 3 to 1 or more, as might Italian Soiree (3).

Exactas: Her Laugh (4) over Junta (5), Italian Soiree (3), La Cara (6), Dancing Music (2), Deloraine (1) and Queen in the Deck (7).
