Jeff Siegel's What You Need to Know - Santa Anita - 2/14/25

    February 14, 2025

Jeff Siegel’s “What You Need to Know”
    Santa Anita Park

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
Santa Anita Race 1: Post: 12:30 PT Grade: B
    Main Ticket: 1-Toughness
    ; 5-War to Remember.
    Backups: none.

Forecast: Toughness has burned money in his first two starts but if he leaves cleanly from his inside draw the son of Complexity should be the best of speed types and prove tough to catch in this maiden turf sprint for sophomores. Since he’s not one to trust, we’ll also include on the top line the route-to-sprint play War to Remember, who is comfortably drawn outside and switches to F. Prat. He’ll fold over into an ideal pace pressing position and have every chance to wear down our top pick close home. Both should be included in rolling exotic play.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
Santa Anita Race 2: Post: 1:02 PT Grade: X
    Main Ticket: 1-Clampett

    Backups: none.

Forecast: The genuine and versatile Clampett will be an extremely short price in this starter allowance main track miler based on several positive factors that appear in his chart. Specifically, he’ll probably be the controlling speed from his favorable rail draw even though he’s clearly not a need the lead type and he’s fresh from a career top performance in a race that was tougher than the one he’s in today. The M. Glatt-trained gelding is an obvious no-value rolling exotic single.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
Santa Anita Race 3: Post: 1:32 PT Grade: B+
    Main Ticket: Champagne Camie
    ; 7-Open Soul Autism.
    Backups: none.

Forecast: The winner should be one of the two listed on our top line above in this starter optional claimer for fillies and mares over six furlongs in the main track. Champagne Camie must leave from the rail and isn’t particular quick so she may have to negotiate a bit of traffic in this seven runner affair, but if she can secure a clear path from the head of the lane to the wire the J. Sadler-trained six year old should her shot to tag the speed close home. Freshened for more than two months following a clever score at Los Alamitos in a $16,000 seller, she is solid on numbers despite the slight raise in class, and a bullet recent training track drill (:57 1/5) tells us she’s right on edge. Open Soul Autism is comfortably drawn outside, picks up F. Prat, and is strictly the one to beat. She’s back sprinting where she belongs and a bullet five furlong breeze (:59 1/5) at San Luis Rey Downs nine days ago signals her readiness.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
Santa Anita Race 4: Post: 2:02 PT Grade: X
    Main Ticket: Madam Secretary

    Backups: 6-Lolo Le Plume.

Forecast: Madame Secretary is a filly of some promise. With two sprints under her belt, the addition of Lasix, and a significant forward move in speed figures between her first and second starts, the daughter of Constitution looks ready to graduate. We’ll expect the R. Mandella-trained sophomore to be on or near the lead throughout as a logical short price favorite.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
Santa Anita Race 5: Post: 2:32 PT Grade: B+
    Main Ticket: Velocious
    ; 4-Union Coach.
    Backups: none.

Forecast: Velocious shows up in a mid-grade claiming sprint while shortening to her preferred surface and distance. Based on the number she earned winning from a starter allowance field sprinting at Pleasanton in early December, the daughter of Goldencents should be capable of regaining her winning form in this six furlong dirt dash for fillies and mares. Union Coach has strong credentials as well and is a “must use” on the top line. In the frame in 10 of 13 career stats, the I. Tamayo-trained four-year-old might be the quickest of the quick, and if she can shake loose early she could prove hard to down.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
Santa Anita Race 6: Post: 3:02 PT Grade: B+
    Main Ticket: Rank
    ; 5-Baeza.
    Backups: 2-Mellencamp; 3-Varney.

Forecast: Rank already has had seven outings without breaking his maiden, so it’s fairly clear that he can’t beat a real good colt, though there may not be one in this maiden main track miler for sophomores. The son of Honor A. P. earned his best speed figure (by far) when second in a similar affair behind the highly regarded Rodriguez over this track and distance last month and if he can repeat that performance today he’ll be hard to beat. From his rail draw, he might inherit the role as the controlling speed. Baeza, third in the same race our top pick exits in just his second career outing, has much more room for improvement and with another forward move could prove difficult to contain. His Beyer speed figure improved by 27 points between his first and second starts; it’ll be interesting what kind of improvement he has in him today.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
Santa Anita Race 7: Post: 3:32 PT Grade: B+
    Main Ticket: 5-Clouseau
    .
    Backups: none.

Forecast: Clouseau returns to Southern California after scoring back-to-back wins at Pleasanton in first level allowance middle distance main track affairs. On pure numbers, either one of those performances are sufficient to extend his winning streak, and because the son of Distorted Humor has won three times over the local main track we know he’ll handle the surface just fine. The projected moderate pace flow of this one mile affair suits him perfectly (he’s a stalker or second flight runner), so we’re expecting the A. Mathis-trained gelding to be along in time.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
Santa Anita Race 8: Post: 4:02 PT Grade: B+
    Main Ticket: 2-Ridegold

    Backups: 9-Stubborn.

Forecast: Ridegold finished a willing second in her debut in a solid performance (well clear of the rest) while earning a speed figure that should be sufficient to beat this field. She’s not a particularly quick sort – she’s more of a grinder – and as such the daughter of Clubhouse Ride should greatly appreciate that race under her belt plus today’s extra half furlong. J. Hernandez rides her back and maidens from this barn have a history of improving in their second career outings, so it all adds up to a logical rolling exotic single.

Al Cimaglia: Cal Expo Late Pick 4 Analysis

      February 14, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

Cal Expo has a compact 8-race card set to roll. The Pick 5 starts the night and it has a $20,000 guaranteed pool. The 0.20 Late Pick 4 begins in Race 5. The sequence has a $25,000 guaranteed pool with a 16% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

      Race 5 (8:05 PM PST)

2-Search And Destroy (9/2)-Luke Plano sticks on the Nick Roland trainee and was his choice over #1-Lilbabyblue. Has been cashing checks and now lands at level to post a win. Should get a nice trip and be close to the leaders turning for the wire.
8-Jackie Boy (3-1)-Was off 3-weeks before the last race, stayed inside, got shuffled and rallied late to finish a close 2nd. The post draw might not hurt if the pace is honest. But Brett Erickson must be aggressive enough to get into striking range by the top of the stretch.

      Race 6 (8:25 PM PST)

2-TJB Secreharriet (3-1)-This mare may have met a beatable field. Has hit the board in 6 of 9 starts at CalX but has only taken 1-picture. Hasn't won at this meet and this looks like the best opportunity to cash the top check.
6-Senga Napalm (3-1)-Ryan Grunde is the lessee, trainer and tonight he drives. The change in pilots may make a winning difference. Could find a live cover flow and roll by down the lane.

      Race 7 (8:45 PM PST)

5-Chase The Gold (2-1)-Dropped to this level in last and had a bumpy journey leaving from post 9. James Kennedy could leave and steal a quarter in a formless race. Needs a solid drive plus a dry track wold help, and both could happen tonight.

      Race 8 (9:05 PM PST)

2-Dance Traveler (6-1)-Gets a positive driver change in Lemoyne Svendsen and did take a picture at this same level back on 12-28. Wired the field that night and could try the same game plan again.
3-Spartacus Bluechip (5-1)-The last 3 starts have been on an off-track and shows 1 win on a wet surface in 25 tries.
Gets a ++ driver change in Nick Roland who should work an efficient trip. There is no one to fear in this field and could offer a square price.

      $2 Late Pick 4

      2,8/2,6/5/2,3
      Total Bet=$16

Tampa Bay Downs Pick 3 for Friday, Feb. 14

        February 14, 2025 | By Frank Carulli

TAMPA BAY DOWNS LATE PICK 3
        Friday, February 14, 2025

Crowded fields and a pair of one mile turf races comprise the Late Pick 3 at Tampa Bay Downs this Friday, Feb. 14. All three races drew double-digit entries, perhaps setting the stage for a re-run of last Friday’s card when favorites struggled and the winners went off at 6-1, 8-1 and 5-2. Here’s a closer look:

TAM 7th race (3:54 p.m. EST) -- TRIUMPHANT ROAD took the class plunge in his first start for high-percentage trainer Saffie Joseph Jr., emerged on a brief lead after he was bumped leaving the 1/8th pole and finished second to the favorite, clearly establishing himself as the one to beat. But as one of four entrants winless with at least 10 starts on turf, add a couple longshots to the ticket. DIFFUSION debuts for trainer Mike Dini, who is 19-for-50 the last 2 years with maiden claimers on the turf, with nine of the winners going off at 5-1 or higher. SKYLER’S ARETMIS raced far back on the drop to this level when last seen in August, but he showed good speed in sprints last summer and attended to a slow pace for 6F the only other time he ran on turf, facing the likes of Quokka ($113k), stakes-placed Heartened and next-out Maiden Special Weight winner Horton (82 Beyer). GRAND PARK VIEW, heavily bet while finishing in the money in three consecutive sprints, should lead for as far as he goes in his first long-distance test. He is by multiple graded stakes-winning router Girvin, whose offspring are only 2-73 in turf routes. OCALA ROCKET, dismissed at 4-1 odds or less in seven of his last eight starts, rallied mildly while 3-wide but was out-kicked late for third for a $20,000 tag last out.

TAM 8th race (4:25 p.m. EST) -- SEA ART rallied 4-wide at the quarter pole but settled for second behind 2-to-5 favorite Miuccia, a stakes-winning and Grade 3-placed sprinter. She should sit a good trip at a distance which she has earned more than half of her $212k bankroll. HOPESNDREAMS hasn’t won on conventional dirt since she beat four rivals at Tampa 10 months ago. But she has been a model of consistency since then, spanning various tracks and surfaces. HAPPY BELLA showed promise winning her seasonal debut despite drifting off the rail in her first start on conventional dirt. Her speed is compromised on the class rise in this field, but she can’t be discounted in a 20-percent ‘repeat’ barn.

TAM 9th race (4:55 p.m. EST) -- ERA unleashed a powerful 5-wide rally on the final turn and won going away at this distance for a repeat victory at this level. OUR FLAG FLYING was overmatched in a 1-1/8-mile allowance in her first start for top connections, but she worked in :48-1/5 since then, runs for the cheapest tag of her career and met eventual three-peat winners in her last two go-rounds on turf. WHISPERING SEA found herself in an unfamiliar lead role and tired badly in a four-horse field that was scheduled for turf. She rallied for a win, two seconds and a third in her previous five starts on the lawn and deserves a chance to bounce back. (NOTE: Add #11 POSTINO’S PROPHECY and #12 PURE MAGIC GIRL if they draw into the race.)

        Suggested 50-Cent Ticket
        TAM 7th Race: 2, 3, 5, 8
        TAM 8th Race: 4, 5, 6
        TAM 9th Race: 1, 5, 7 (Add #s 11 and 12 if they draw into race.)
        Cost: $18

          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

          Fair Grounds - Race #6
#1 Hide the Bride Get a look at her ahead of this, but she's obviously debuting with some pretty reasonable expectations and has a little bit of fun sprint pedigree. Maybe.
#5 Elodine Another tough call -- you know she fits on overall form, but she's pretty short on excuses at this point in time and always seems open to getting beat by someone having a better day.
#4 Shehasanattitude Could see her being in the mix here while making the third start off the layoff, but she can be vulnerable late with the way she tends to go flat in the stretch call.
Race Summary Hide the Bride isn't meeting a particularly deep field, so I'm hoping that she'll be the right kind of fresh face today.
          Fair Grounds - Race #7
#6 Star Rock Star Mild worry that he's going to end up overbet in here, especially as we try to figure out how he fits while trying older horses, a route, and the turf for the first time. Still, not sure this is a super tough race, so she might be up to the task.
#7 Star Star Star His December turf try was pretty solid, and I'm hoping he can relax just a touch while meeting another pace player or two in here. One of the ones.
#3 Emily's Boy There are a couple decent finishing lines on his page, and that might be the right kind of style if a couple of these set a fair enough tempo.
Race Summary Star Rock Star and Star Star Star seem like the right pair, but the former might offer a bit better price while having a couple questions to answer.
          Fair Grounds - Race #2
#2 Cajun Swagger He went pretty evenly when trying this level for the first time last out, but I think something similar might leave him in a pretty good spot in behind the quicker players early, and something one-paced could land it from there.
#1 Bigfoot Sighting He's the clear one to beat while cutting the price tag with a decent trip looming near the front, but I'm the tiniest bit concerned that a couple other forward players will force an early move from him that leaves him vulnerable to getting picked up by someone plugging along late.
#6 Royal Coach He's another with a claim on this while getting into an easier spot, but he's meeting a bit of other pace and is known to pack things in when he doesn't get his way. Touch call.
Race Summary Cajun Swagger's even effort last out might translate nicely today, and he could be in line for a decent trip while saving some ground into the far turn.

            Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

Tampa Bay Downs - Race #1
#10 JENAS MERCY (3-1) Monster move to break maiden at 7F, another wide trip likely from post 10.
#4 TIZ ERIN (9-2) Idle since October claim, breezed :48 bullet, barn was 14-for-54 in 2024.
#9 CALMING SEA (6-1) Often leads at stretch call in routes, makes first start on conventional dirt.
Race Summary JENAS MERCY bid leaving the half-mile marker, inhaled the field while 5-wide and won by five lengths on the class drop at today’s distance. Only one of her rivals posted a 36+ Beyer speed figure in their last five starts on dirt, but she should get a lively pace to rally into and gets a repeat call. Bet to win and place and play a 4-9-10 exacta box.
Tampa Bay Downs - Race #2
#2 AWESOME PRINCE (3-1) Holds tactical advantage for barn in midst of 5-for-18 ‘repeat’ run.
#6 AUGER (5-2) Won in same spot two back, catching leader who ran third in $8k ‘starter’ next out.
#4 COURT CONTENDER (3-1) Shook clear in stretch but got caught in route, drops off the claim.
Race Summary AWESOME PRINCE went after the fleet-footed leader on the turn, edged away in upper stretch and held safe the deep-closing runner-up and odds-on favorite to win. He earned the top speed figure of his career on the barn switch and can make maximum use of his speed in here. Bet to win and place and play a 2, 6/ 2, 4, 6/1, 2, 4, 6 trifecta.
Tampa Bay Downs - Race #4
#3 SHE’S A JOY (10-1) Dueled long way in double-key 7F sprint two back, live longshot with blinkers on.
#2 SANDPIPER MEMORIES (8-5) Won last two sprints going away, steps up off Carrasco claim.
#1 SPUNFORFUN (9-2) Steady diet of upper 50 Beyers on conventional dirt, cuts back in distance.
Race Summary SHE’S A JOY lacked speed in the third short sprint attempt of her career for a higher claiming price last out, but she vied for lead to the stretch in a ‘key’ 7F race two back and adds blinker for the first time since she was claimed in August 2023. There’s not much quality speed in here, so she’s worth a win and place bet at 10-1 on the morning line. Also play 3-1 and 3-2 exactas.

Race 6 - Maiden Special Weight - 8.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $60000 Class Rating: 96

FOR MAIDENS, THREE YEARS OLD. WEIGHT, 121 LBS.
                  RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                  # 3 VARNEY 7/2
                  # 2 MELLENCAMP 3/1
                  # 5 BAEZA 5/2
VARNEY is the strongest bet in this race. He has been running soundly and the speed figures are among the strongest in this group. With Hernandez uptop him, this colt will probably be able to break out quickly for this race. The speed fig of 86 from his last race looks very good in here. MELLENCAMP - In this field, this one is at the top in earnings per start in dirt route races. Last time out, this colt was up against a much tougher bunch. BAEZA - Look for a very good pace improvement from this racer who enters with second time Lasix today. Ran a strong last race.

                    Aqueduct - Race #2 - Post: 1:37pm - Maiden Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $34,000 Class Rating: 57

                    Rating:

                    #2 DEAR JOHN (ML=6/1)

DEAR JOHN - The January 19th event at Aqueduct was at a class level of (66). Dropping down the ladder based on class drastically, so she should be in a good spot to take this race. Here is an appropriate handicapping angle that I've used many times before. Play a filly (like this one) getting Lasix for the second time.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #6 RODEO STAR (ML=6/5), #3 AH CA IRA (ML=5/2), #1 GIANT'S AUDIBLE (ML=3/1),

RODEO STAR - Finished third in her most recent effort with a disappointing fig. When I look at today's Equibase class figure, it would take an improved performance to score after that in this bunch. AH CA IRA - Mediocre speed fig last out at Aqueduct at 1 mile. Don't feel this racer will improve too much in today's race. GIANT'S AUDIBLE - Showed very little in the last event. Really don't expect any change today.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #2 DEAR JOHN on the win end if we get at least 1/1 odds
                    EXACTA WAGERS: None
                    TRIFECTA WAGERS: None

                      Gulfstream Park - Race #2 - Post: 12:52pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $23,000 Class Rating: 74

                      Rating:

                      #4 MOHAY PLEASE (ML=8/1)
                      #5 PASSIONATE CRY (ML=8/5)
                      #3 BLAST RADIUS (ML=9/5)

MOHAY PLEASE - Was in an $8,000 Claiming race at Tampa Bay Downs in the last race. That race had a class figure of 79 and he is moving down in this race. A certain win candidate. This gelding garnered a good speed rating of 74 in his last clash. That speed rating should be good enough to win this time. PASSIONATE CRY - I really like that most recent effort on Jan 19th at Gulfstream Park where he ended up first. Alvarado and Barboza perform well when they combine forces. It's hard to beat a +126 ROI for a jockey and handler. BLAST RADIUS - I wouldn't worry too much about the vacation; this gelding is ready to run today. Rode this thoroughbred on June 30th and Zayas is back again in the irons in this race. Taking a trip down in class ranks; has the capability to make his presence felt.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #7 PERFORMANTE (ML=4/1),

PERFORMANTE - On a downward spiraling series. Speed figures keep deteriorating.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #4 MOHAY PLEASE on the win end if we get at least 3/1 odds

                        # 6 MUSICAL NOTE 7/2
                        # 4 QUEEN JUDITH 5/2
My pick for this event is TAKEMETOTHEBEACH. Have to wager on this filly with the sound earnings per start in dirt route races. She has put up strong figures under today's conditions and ought to fare well versus this group of horses. This filly with Hernandez in the saddle makes her a solid choice. MUSICAL NOTE - Win percentage with this jockey and handler combo - 20 percent - formidable. QUEEN JUDITH - Her 91 average has this mare with among the top speed figs here. Ran a solid last race.

SPARTAN GENERAL is the clear stand out bet in the eyes of the knowledge group. Good for a win bet just off the top notch prior class figures. Have to like this nice horse. BUCK DANCER - Has formidable speed ratings and definitely has to be thought of for a bet in this one. This gelding has been running against some of the most competitive company in this field of starters recently. MISTER MAGIC - You have to get behind a horse that likes to win, very attractive win pct. Certainly should be given a look based on the good TrackMaster SR achieved in the last affair.
