Fair Grounds and Laurel Park put on the full-court press for stakes this Saturday and we’re treated to important races, coast to coast, from Gulfstream, Aqueduct, Turfway, Oaklawn and Santa Anita. Let’s get busy with the bottom-line verdict on each.

1:34 pm ET | Laurel | Race 4 | Nellie Morse Stakes

Cheap speed abounds in this race, where rail-drawn closer #1 Sea Dancer (7-5 ML) gets to save all the ground and repeat her winning trip from the Carousel Stakes, which was her first start since changing barns to high-percentage Brittany Russell.

2:04 pm ET | Aqueduct | Race 3 | Say Florida Sandy Stakes

#2 Mama’s Gold (1-1 ML) flopped this time a year ago coming off similarly dominant scores in prior starts, so I’ll try to beat his likely overbet, triple-digit Beyers with #4 Doc Sullivan (5-2 ML), the only other horse who looks capable of keeping up early.

Class edge to #6 Royal Spa (4-1 ML), who gets the perfect outside spying post in this 7-furlong race that projects to have a highly contentious early pace among the other main players.

2:59 pm ET | Laurel | Race 7 | John B. Campbell Stakes

The 1-1/8 miles trip is hardly a specialty to any of these but maybe brings #5 Cataleya Strike (6-1 ML) into the conversation for a tepid tab at what should be a healthy price.

3:27 pm ET | Laurel | Race 8 | General George Stakes

Facing a lineup that has made most of its hay vs. restricted state-breds, the super-consistent #5 Prince of Jericho (6-5 ML) should be a very tough out here Brittany Russell, who is sitting on another potentially big day.

4:30 pm ET | Fair Grounds | Race 8 | Colonel Power Stakes

#10 No Nay Hudson (9-2 ML) likely will be overbet for Wesley Ward and Flavien Prat with 1 win in his last 7 and from a tough post, so give me the rail speed of #1 Old Homestead (8-1 ML) and hope he takes to turf (definitely the play if off-turf).

5:22 pm ET | Gulfstream Park | Race 11 | Royal Delta Stakes

Let’s go on price patrol here with the well-drawn #1 American Retro (8-1 ML) having a chance to trip-out beautifully, while the bomber #6 Riding Pretty (20-1 ML) has a penchant for running big races when making surface switches back to dirt.

5:30 pm ET | Fair Grounds | Race 10 | Albert M. Stall Memorial Stakes

#8 Tufani (10-1 ML), a 2-time winner over this course with a pair of triple-digit BRIS Late Pace figures in her last 3 starts, has a penchant for firing fresh off similar breaks and should be rolling late with #5 Nanda Dea (7-2 ML).

5:51 pm ET | Oaklawn | Race 9 | Dixie Belle Stakes

#6 G W’s Girl (7-5 ML) is a deserving favorite after reeling in 2-5 shot and next-out Gulfstream winner Shisospicy in the Mockingbird Stakes, so use her over pricy #1 Miss Martini (12-1 ML), who may appreciate a forecasted wet track.

6:00 pm ET | Fair Grounds | Race 11 | Mineshaft Stakes

#4 Hall of Fame (4-1 ML) gets a 4-pound weight break from many of his prime rivals – and a tactical pace edge over #5 Catching Freedom (3-1 ML) at equal weights – while the Steve Asmussen-Jose Ortiz tandem has been exceptional.

6:30 pm ET | Fair Grounds | Race 12 | Fair Grounds Stakes

#2 Gigante (7-2 ML) is beautifully drawn and in raging form, capable of triple-digit BRIS Late Pace figures (103 when fourth in this race last year), and can give the Steve Asmussen-Jose Ortiz a back-to-back stakes double whether this race goes on turf or dirt.

6:40 pm ET | Santa Anita | Race 7 | Palos Verdes Stakes

#1 Big City Lights (2-5 ML) won this race at 2-5 last year and is just too strong on the back end for these when he runs his race, so I’ll use him as a single in the late Pick-N sequences.

7:00 pm ET | Fair Grounds | Race 13 | Rachel Alexandra Stakes

Difficult to see anyone but multi-race single #2 Good Cheer (6-5 ML) after the expected scratch of #3 Ballerina d’Oro (7-2 ML), who would have provided some opposition.

7:30 pm ET | Fair Grounds | Race 14 | Risen Star Stakes

Not going to get cute here as #4 East Avenue (9-5 ML) has trained exceptionally well on video for his 3-year-old return and should be forwardly placed in a field that lacks big-time finishers.

8:55 pm ET | Turfway | Race 7 | Dust Commander Stakes

Appreciate that late-running #6 Groveland (15-1 ML) got back on the workout tab just 8 days after a promising local debut, showing he got a lot out of that race, and he gets more pace to rally into tonight along with #3 Hush of a Storm (3-1 ML).

Fair Grounds - Race #10

#11 Lakota Spirit	Toss the dirt try last time out -- her local debut was pretty gritty when reaching hard to reel in the leader on the line. There are some OK names in her company lines, and I wouldn't be shocked to see her stack up well today.
#8 Tufani	She was competitive with many of these last season, and she's coming into this with some pretty solid New York form from the fall. Think she's vulnerable to someone with a slightly higher ceiling bringing an 'A' effort that's a touch too good for her, but she's reliable and should be there.
#5 Nanda Dea	She looked good in that easy Keeneland allowance win last fall, and she should be able to find a really good spot tracking the splits here. One of the ones, but maybe overbet on the rise?
Race Summary	Lakota Spirit has run in a handful of tough spots over the last year or so, and she might offer a playable enough price in here.

Fair Grounds - Race #11

#6 Maycocks Bay	Still think he's heading in the right direction, and he might offer another decent price to see if he can turn tables today. Perfect spy in behind the slightly quicker players?
#5 Catching Freedom	He's a local Grade II winner, so he obviously likes the footing here, and there are enough forward/pace types lined up to think the splits should at least be honest.
#8 Komorebino Omoide	He might find the first-jump spot while prompting the splits from the outside, and he was in range at the wire behind a nice one last time out. In the mix.
Race Summary	Maycocks Bay might still have some upside, and I can see him finding the right kind of forward tracking trip while watching the speedier players settle early scores?

Fair Grounds - Race #14

#12 Vamos Carlitos	Really liked the race he ran with Lasix off the claim, and I don't blame them for taking a shot here while he's in good form -- and maybe still on the improve. Some appeal with his ability to pass horses if the pace is honest.
#4 East Avenue	Not going to argue with anyone who thinks he's just too good for these on his best day, especially with the clear excuse from the break in the Breeders' Cup. Mild worry is the presence of other forward players.
#10 Render Judgment	He's not totally overmatched here and might get past some of them, but my main concern is that he hasn't really taken any big steps forward through four races, and he's going to need one to land this. Some one-paced potential for a piece?
Race Summary	Vamos Carlitos should be settled a bit back off the splits that might be just fair enough to give him a fighting chance to finish and potentially make the comeback run difficult for the classy East Avenue.

Race Summary	A solid field of 3-year-olds go post-ward with a combined 11-40 record. TINY LAKE is 2-2 as a gelding after he was hard-used while 3- and 4-wide before taking the lead late on the turn and finding more when asked in mid-stretch. Bet to win and place and play a 2-3-4 exacta box.

Laurel Park - Race #3

#1 INSPEIGHTOFTRAINER (5-2)	Proven miler in N.Y. tries to recapture best form off Ness claim.
#7 MOTSKARI (9-2)	Solid route numbers, class drop could be key to sustaining bid.
#6 STATELY ORDER (8-1)	Left too much work to do after slow start at 7F, fits well on best.
Race Summary	Ness tries his hand with INSPEIGHTOFTRAINER, claimed out of a dull effort at this level off an eight-month layoff. The field’s top money-earner has plenty of long-distance experience but lost by a combined 50 lengths in three starts beyond one mile. Hoping for more than the 5-to-2 morning line with a win and place wager and 1-6-7 exacta box.

Laurel Park - Race #9

#3 EARL OF DASSEL (6-1)	Confident class hike off claim, Rodriguez sticks, needs some pace flow.
#2 WINE COLLECTOR (8-5)	Set pressured pace, caught by the favorite, holds tactical advantage.
#5 MIDNIGHT RENEGADE (8-1)	Late interest in sprint, sheds 9 pounds in first dirt route since 2023.
Race Summary	EARL OF DASSEL ended a year-long winless drought on the class drop but overcame a slow pace in a longer route race to do it. He steps up off the claim, retains Rodriguez to ride and is taken to upset with a win and place wager. Also play a 2,3/2,3,5,6/ALL trifecta.

11th race - (8) Grand Job is undefeated in the US and seems poised for a strong stakes debut. (7) Dazzling Move deserves attention in her first start for Joseph. 2^nd race [Alw 82000 N1X, 6F] – (1) Antonio of Venice (D) was bet down from 6-1 to 7-2 in his second start following a layoff and ran his last two on wet and sealed tracks which are clearly not to his liking. (3) Radio Red returned from a seven month layoff to finish a close second at this level after having the lead. (2) Exploration was a six-length maiden special weight winner with a front-end run. (4) What’s Up Bro returns from a July layoff with plenty of races that could win here including winning through his NY-bred allowance conditions.

3^rd race [NY, Say Florida Sandy, 7F] – (2) Mama’s Gold won his last two starts in an open company allowance and the Empire Classic with speed figures that none of the horses in the field can come close to. (3) Locke and Key won through the NY-bred allowance conditions and then won against open company last month. (4) Doc Sullivan set the pace in the Alex M. Robb for NY-breds and just missed the win by a nose while far ahead of the others. (6) Shipsational has been racing in open-company allowances.

4^th race [Clm 15000, 6 ? F] – (5) Spiritual Lady drops back to the claiming ranks where last time she was a winner for a $25,000 tag. (8) Trade Secret was claimed from her last two starts and has nine top three finishes in a row. (2) Maggie T won a $25,000 claimer against NY-breds in December. (4) Play Good Pay Good makes a big drop in class. She was a voided claim last time for $32,000 and at the time that was the lowest level in which she had run.

6^th race [NY, Md 30000, 6 ? F] – (8) Accidental Bid was claimed from his last two races where he finished third and then set the pace but got caught at the wire. (1) Drive Thru and (1A) Solo Flight make a McMahon Thoroughbreds entry where both are win contenders. (9) Cattani was third at this level last time out. (2) Stormy’s Dreaming was second in a similar spot last month.

Keeneland Select Derby Prep - Risen Star | February 15, 2025

The $500,000 Risen Star (G2), Fair Grounds

Race 13 – The Risen Star is the first Kentucky Derby prep race this year that offers the increased qualifying points of [50-25-15-10-5]. A fast pace is projected in this nine-furlong contest which drew a field of 13 that includes three horses that already have a victory on the Derby trail. (9) Built won the Gun Runner by almost seven lengths with a front-end effort. In the Lecomte (G3) in January, he rallied from behind and just missed the victory by a neck and has 20 Derby points. He has versatility that will be valuable as the winner must get through the large field and handle the distance. (4) East Avenue won his first two starts beginning with an eight-length victory at Ellis Park and then he won the Breeders’ Futurity (G1) by more than five lengths earning him 10 Derby points. In the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, he stumbled badly out of the gate and lost all chance on his way to a ninth-place finish. Both of his wins were with front-end efforts and he is expected to be part of the fast pace. (1) American Promise broke his maiden in his sixth start at Oaklawn at the end of December with a front-end effort on a muddy track going two-turns. He earned a speed figure that shares the highest number in this field. Lukas sent him onto the Kentucky Derby trail in the Southwest (G3) where he finished sixth and was moved down to seventh place. Breaking from the rail he can get a ground-saving trip. (3) Vassimo is undefeated in two starts since starting his career in December. He broke his maiden going a mile against a field of nine at Gulfstream Park. Last month in December he beat a small group in an allowance at Tampa Downs making a big jump in speed figures. In both races he used a stalking trip going a mile or more.

Keeneland Select Picks of the Day | February 15, 2025

Race 13 at Fair Grounds | Saturday February 15 | Post Time 7 PM Eastern

Rachel Alexandra Stakes – Grade 2 | Purse $300,000 | Fillies, Three Years Olds | One Mile and One Sixteenth

Analysis and top contenders:

Simply Joking (6) may be a standout in this seven-horse race on the “Road to the Kentucky Oaks,” although Good Cheer (2) must be respected except for the question mark of returning from a layoff since November 30 as compared to Simply Joking having run just four weeks ago. Simply Joking was so highly regarded she made her debut in a stakes and broke her maiden in that race on December 21 at the distance of six furlongs. Making her second start four weeks later on January 18 in the Untapable Stakes, Simply Joking led from the start and coasted home to a two and one-half length win, earning a 91 Equibase Speed Figure she is very likely to improve upon in her second route and third career start. She won her debut from off the pace, does not wear blinkers, and so jockey Torres has the option of taking the lead from the start if none of the other horse wants it, or sitting off the pace then rallying. I think he will opt for taking the lead considering none of the other six are stretching out from sprints or have shown a desire to lead early in a race. From there, it’s “Come Catch Me” which should be the winning tactic.

Good Cheer (2) is unbeaten and untested in four races, all two-turn races, the last two stakes races at this distance at Churchill Downs including the similar Golden Rod Stakes where she moved up quickly from fifth after a half-mile, to second, before drawing off. She has been in front with an eighth of a mile to run in ALL FOUR races and no horse has made any impact on her late. Trainer Cox is well above average at bringing a horse back successfully from 60 to 90 day layoffs in routes, and that’s a plus for this filly who has been away 11 weeks (77 days), but just the same her Equibase Speed Figures of 94, 94 and 89 are not that superior to Simply Joking’s 91 in her first route, which she should improve upon, and considering Good Cheer will very likely go to post at lower odds, she’s not nearly as good a win bet as Simply Joking.

Race 14 at Fair Grounds | Saturday February 15 | Post Time 7:30 PM Eastern

Risen Star Stakes – Grade 2 | Purse $500,000 | Three Year Olds | One Mile and One Eighth

Analysis and top contenders:

Having led from start to finish from the rail in earning his first victory in late December, I am 100% certain the plan was to send American Promise (1) to the front from the seven post at the start in the Southwest Stakes on January 25 and play “come catch me” from that point onward. However, to quote from Robert Burns, “The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.” Such was the case when American Promise stood in the gate when it opened for less than a second, but that was more than enough time for him to lose any chance of using the strategy of leading from the start. Instead, the colt moved up quickly to be fifth after a quarter mile then second after a half mile, before tiring significantly from the mis-expenditure of energy. For the Risen Star, American Promise gets the rail, the same as in his victory in December, where he earned a very strong 102 Equibase Speed Figure, higher than the 100-figure likely favorite Jonathan’s Way (2) earned winning the Iroquois Stakes last September and higher than the 99 figure East Avenue (4) earned winning the Breeders’ Futurity last October. Making the case that his effort in the Southwest can be ignored due to the bad start, and that the effort and field high 102 figure one race before that may be repeated, this suggests American Promise is a strong contender. Additionally, American Promise is out of the dam Tapella, by Tapit, who produced multiple stakes winner Hoosier Philly, who has earned more than $950,000 to date. The jockey change to Keith Asmussen doesn’t hurt either, as he and Hall-of-Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas teamed up to win the Bugler Stakes at Oaklawn a few weeks back and last year they won the Honeybee Stakes (a Road to the Kentucky Oaks race) at odds of 28 to 1.

Built (9) may have a slight edge over Jonathan’s Way and over East Avenue, as he ran four weeks ago as compared to 11 weeks ago for Jonathan’s Way and 14 weeks ago for East Avenue. Built had returned from 12 weeks off on December 21 to win the Gun Runner Stakes, earning a career-best 95 Equibase speed figure, then four weeks later in the Lecomte, Built rallied strongly from sixth to miss by a neck at the wire, although his figure regressed to 84. For the Risen Star, Built gets a jockey change to Luis Saez, and in the event American Promise can’t lead from start to finish, Built appears to have what it takes to go past in the stretch for the win.

Aside from trying to win a two-turn race following 11 weeks off, Jonathan’s Way (2) may still be a strong contender. He won in his debut last August at six furlongs rather easily with an 89 figure, then improved to a career best 100 figure when victorious in the Iroquois Stakes four weeks later. Following a poor effort when seventh in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile though well backed at five to one odds, Jonathan’s Way closed out his freshman campaign pretty nicely when rallying for second behind easy winner First Resort in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes to earn an 88 figure. Trainer Bauer has really gotten the colt into top shape recently, with two excellent workouts at Fair Grounds in preparation for this race. The first of the two was the best of 40 at the distance of five furlongs and the more recent was the third best of 126 on the day at four furlongs. Those suggest this talented colt will put forth a top effort in this race but considering the time off it still may not be good enough to beat the top two contenders.

Like Jonathan’s Way, East Avenue (4) won in his debut, also a sprint, with a 91 figure, before improving to a 99-figure effort winning the Breeders’ Futurity in October. Sent to post as the favorite in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, East Avenue stumbled at the start and lost all chance to fulfil the likely plan of leading early in the race, never making any headway thereafter. Freshened since then, it appears likely that this is a prep for the Louisiana Derby next month, although certainly the connections want him to run well. Given that East Avenue draws the four post and American Promise gets the rail, it is unlikely the instructions given jockey Tyer Gaffalione will be to engage with American Promise in the early stages, but East Avenue may take up a stalking position and be a factor to the finish in this race.

Giocoso (8) ran as fast as the top contenders in this race when last seen on November 8, but on turf, earning a 98 figure with a visually impressive rally from seventh to win by three-quarters of a length. His other win, last August, also came on turf, and in his one dirt route start he finished third behind Jonathan’s Way in the Iroquois, beaten seven lengths for the win. Just the same, he’s more mature now as a three-year-old, has a good late kick and is bred to run okay on dirt so perhaps at decent odds he could complete the exacta.

Bets:

Win Bets: American Promise (1), Built (9) and Jonathan’s Way (2) all have minimum odds of 3 to 1 because I believe if this race were run 100 times, these three would win 75% of the time, so 25% each which equates to 3 to 1. I’m confident American Promise will be above those odds near post time and perhaps Built as well so I would not hesitate to bet both to win in that situation.

SEPTARIAN might benefit from making two turns for the first time as he tends to pull away late.

With a very good 86 speed figure last time out, will definitely be a factor in this race. LAYABOUT - Change in Lasix (with second time Lasix) may be the recipe to a reversal of fortune. He looks very good in this spot and I expect will be on the lead or close at the halfway point.
