Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Mahoning Valley - Race #1

#2 Judy's Comet	He finished just in front of the rail runner in that last meeting, but he probably doesn't have as much upside at this point time. Still, he's a player after catching that easy winner last out.
#1 Buckeye Takeover	He took a ton of cash and split a small field in the debut try while never a serious threat, but he's not meeting an imposing group at second asking and has enough upside to score. Price probably won't be much again.
#4 Kickstart	He moved forward nicely in the second career start, and he seems in the frame with this group if he's able to take another step in the right direction here. One of the ones.
Race Summary	Fun race to open the day, but I'm hoping Judy's Comet will off something like a 2/1 or 5/2 price on the board if the rail runner commands cash again.

Mahoning Valley - Race #4

#5 Rose's Wish	The class rise might help keep the price just playable, but she's a good fit while stepping back in with special weight company after a mildly disappointing effort at 4/5 last out.
#6 Lazy Y Legacy	Get a look at her on the tote and track ahead of this, but I wonder if she might get a decent run of things on debut while tracking a few forward players from the inside.
#4 Lovebug	She's in the mix here, but I worry about the way she gives away ground in all her races, especially while meeting a crew today that should ensure she doesn't get an easy lead.
Race Summary	Rose's Wish has some appeal from a race-flow perspective while likely finding a good trip spying the pace. Think her ability to get past horses will be the ace up her sleeve today.

Mahoning Valley - Race #8

#7 Banana Pudding	Feels like a top-heavy race between a couple of deserving chalks in here, but this one should get a perfect run of things from the outside while keeping tabs on whatever pace there is.
#4 Officially Yours	She was a couple lengths behind the top choice last out, but she's likely one of the pace players in a race with no serious early burn, and that advantage over the top choice makes her the most appealing alternative.
#6 Extra Crafty	She has a little bit of versatility in running style that might keep her in the hunt early on thanks to her small bit of positional pace, and I think she might be able to grind along late for a piece while staying past the middle movers.
Race Summary	Banana Pudding and Officially Yours look the part in here, but I think the former is just a touch better right now and is hopefully just tactical enough to avoid giving 'Yours too big a jump.

#2 MANZONI (9-2)	Troubled starts against better, front-end threat if he gets away cleanly.
#3 BUTTERMAKER (8-1)	Swung off rail in 5F maiden win, wide trip took its toll in follow-up allowance.
#8 GUN POWDER (5-2)	Idle since debut win in June, workouts indicate readiness.
Race Summary	MANZONI veered out at the start and recovered to press the pace 4-wide on the turn before fading in a 6-1/2F stakes race dominated by a pair of short-priced favorites two back. He broke out with blinkers added, advanced on the turn and flattened out in the stretch in a follow-up try against a sharp 4-to-5 winner. Like his chances with an alert break on the class drop. Bet to win and place and play a 2-3-8 exacta box.

Turf Paradise - Race #4

#3 SEA OF LIBERTY (5-1)	Posed for photo-finish camera at four tracks since win on Golden Gate turf.
#5 PICAHOUSE (2-1)	Proven miler is in top form for second go-round on the lawn.
#2 ZUMURUDEE (6-1)	Quarter-million turf earner has been plagued by slow starts, draws closer inside.
Race Summary	SEA OF LIBERTY made first run and held off a trio of deep closers when he won the last time he raced on turf in May 2024. He rode the rail last out, led at the top of the stretch and was out-kicked by the 4-wide winner at one mile on the main track. Wouldn’t expect 5-1 on the 9-year-old but anything close is worth a win and place bet. Also play 3-2 and 3-5 exactas.

Turf Paradise - Race #7

#7 POWER TRIP (3-1)	Rallied for share in pair of 12-horse fields, can return quick claim dividend.
#6 SALSATION (7-2)	Joins group of class droppers, runs for cheapest tag yet, stands 0-7 at 6F.
#8 PICKING IT UP (5-2)	Off heels in mid-stretch, altered course and closed with a rush for second.
Race Summary	POWER TRIP rallied past the favorite but settled for second best at 5F last out and he ‘improved’ with a 5-wide rally in a 12-horse field to finish third in the race prior. The added ground could lead to the winners’ circle for his new connections. Bet to win and place and play 7-6 and 7-8 exactas.

I've got to go with BANANA PUDDING. Like the results in the last couple of races. Her earnings per start in dirt sprint contests alone makes you take a look at her. Has performed very well lately in sprint races, posting a nifty 75 avg Equibase Speed Figure. OFFICIALLY YOURS - Should be carefully examined here on the basis of the figures in the speed section alone. With Barbaran getting the mount, watch out for this horse. BIG FACTS - Bettors should take a good look at this one as this filly has one of the best win percentages at this distance in this field. Might see a different pony here with the blinkers change.

BOBBY'S GIFT - This is a classic 'Lone Front-runner' scenario. If Houghton gets him out of the gate cleanly it'll likely be smooth sailing. GOLD BUCKLE - I am keen on that latest outing on Feb 3rd at Mahoning Valley Race Cour where he ran second.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 ONLY GET'N BETTER (ML=8/5), #3 DIGITAL FOOTPRINT (ML=6/1), #1 CHARGER (ML=8/1),

ONLY GET'N BETTER - You always think this horse has a shot to be the victor, but he comes up short most of the time. Will probably be left with much too much to do in the stretch. Registered a mediocre speed rating in the last race in an Allowance race on Dec 17th. Doubtful to see an improved performance off of that fig. DIGITAL FOOTPRINT - This horse doesn't have a winning mental state. Frequently finishes close, but no cigar. No pace in this race to help this closer's chances. CHARGER - This gelding is always around, but just doesn't win. Hard to bet on him on the win end. Hard to play a runner that lays up for a long time then doesn't land in the top three off the long breather. When examining today's class rating, he will have to notch a better speed figure than last time out to compete in this dirt route.

MAGICNTHEMOONLIGHT - This gelding is most certainly on the improve with speed figures of 67, 69, 96 last three out. GET SET - This gelding is in nice condition, having run a strong race on January 27th, finishing second. PARTY AT SAM'S - Gelding scored his last race here on December 9th as a shipper. I think he looks like a winner once again. This gelding registered a good speed fig of 97 in his last contest. That speed fig should be strong enough to prove victorious this time around. This animal has increased his speed ratings from a fig of 64 to 88 to 97 in a row.

I think FANCEY LIKE is a very strong choice. Fales has this filly racing well and is a respectable selection based on the very good speed figures put up in short races as of late. She looks formidable in this slot and I expect will be on the lead or close at the midpoint. Had one of the top speed figures of this group of horses in her last race. MY SPECIAL EAGLE - Ran a solid last race. Is worth thinking about and may be a bet - strong Equibase speed figs (58 average) at today's distance and surface as of late. LETSJUSTSAY - This gelding looks good in this race since Allred has a very strong win percent with horses going this distance. The Equibase speed fig of 52 from his last affair looks very strong in here.

The pick this time is CHECK ON ME. This contender has shown us some ability in the past, just look at the 77 avg class rating. Should play well in this race. With a very nice 79 TrackMaster speed fig last time out, will clearly be a factor in this affair. This trainer, and the driver Tetrick, go together like hot dogs and buns. Their results together are exemplary. THE DRAGON REBORN - He has been going to post soundly and the speed ratings are among the most favorable in the group of animals. Davis has been able to get this harness racer to perform when sending to the post. Always worth a look. BORIS BADENOV - My calculations say this Jasper comes back soundly after a layoff and in good shape

ATTENTION SPAN will not be denied the ultimate prize for this race. This solid standardbred looks dangerous. Take a good look at the 82 average speed figure. Good for a win wager just off the top notch prior class figures. Have to like this fine animal. A really good play in here as he has one of the highest winning clips in the race as well as excellent credentials all around. HI HO SILVER - Can't pass over based on TrackMaster Speed Ratings which have been top notch (80 avg) recently. Could beat this pack, just look at the TrackMaster speed fig - 80 - from his most recent effort. VLS BODIE - Loved this gelding's last race. Ran a big 77 speed rating. Major contender. Well above average winning percent makes this harness racer an excellent selection to take home the dough.
