(5) Swoonatra has keen early speed and could hang around until the end. Betting strategy: 8 to win, place. Exacta box: 4-5-7-8.

4th race – (3) Jam Session has been away since March but put in a fast work for his comeback race. (5) Jolly Boss should pose the biggest threat. (7) King Julien will be dangerous at this level. (9) La Belleza Negra fits in with this group. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-5-7-9.

7th race – (7) Comedy Town (A) missed by a neck last time and can make amends here. (4) Nakatomi makes his first start since the Breeders’ Cup and is the one to fear. (6) Concrete Glory seeks a third straight win and cannot be ignored. (2) Gordian Knot is worth a look in his first start for Pletcher. Betting strategy: 7 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-4-6-7.

9th race – (3) Majorca missed by a neck in his first try around two turns and should get the job done here. (5) Doroteo was second and third in two starts and should be the main foe. 11th race - (1) Tuscon won nicely in his Tapeta debut and can handle winners here. (8) Junction Road was victorious in his last try on Tapeta. (7) Frosted Over may improve in his debut for Drexler. 3^rd race [Heavenly Prize, 1 mi] – (3) Weigh the Risks won her last two starts moving from a nine-length first-level allowance to the next allowance both since moving from turf to dirt. (4) Patricia Ann had the same kind of success while winning her two most recent races. (1) Kid’s Last Laugh was an allowance winner also and was then second behind Patricia Ann. (7) Aussie Girl was a stakes winner at the Curragh in Ireland and then was an allowance winner at Keeneland in October. She will make her first start on dirt.

5^th race [Clm 16000 N2L, 7F] – (1) Sondsliksomdiniddo was a maiden winner and was second at this claiming level in the spring and returns from a May layoff. (8) King of the Gods comes back after a year layoff following a maiden victory for a $25,000 tag. (6) Mr. Mendelssohn ran third twice and was second in his last three starts at the N2L condition. (7) Conniving ran one of his best races two weeks ago.

6^th race [Alw 50000s, 1 mi] – (4) Melt With You (B) had an awkward start when he stumbled at the start, rushed up on the outside, drifted out in the stretch, and finished third. He comes back now in three weeks. (5) Frizzante was either second or first in his last five races. In that series he was claimed twice and now runs for Linda Rice. He will cut back to the one-turn mile which suits him better. (2) Houlton was claimed from a $40,000 maiden victory ran second last month at this starts allowance level. (3) Traffic Monster has a pair of thirds for Jamie Ness including at Aqueduct in January.

7^th race [Clm 16000B, 6F] – (2) Gridlock was claimed in October at Keeneland by Linda Rice for $20,000 when she set the pace and missed by a neck. She returned in a January starter allowance that was too tough and drops into a winning spot. (9) Poseidon’s Mist was claimed from a second last time after setting the pace and comes back after three weeks. (5) Lika Rolling Stone rallied for a close second for a $25,000 tag. (1) My Royal Vow rallied for second at this level in January.

(9) First Resort has not run since winning the Kentucky Jockey Club in late November. He’s untested on an all-weather surface, but ran well enough on turf to be the pick here. (7) Baby Max won the Leonatus Stakes here and shapes up as the main rival. (6) Banks flopped as the favorite in the Leonatus but deserves a second chance. (12) Maximum Promise could pose a big threat in this field. Betting strategy: 9 to win. Exacta and trifecta box: 6-7-9-12.

John Battaglia Stakes | Purse $175,000 | Three Year Olds | One Mile and One Sixteenth

Analysis and top contenders:

California Burrito (5) may be an odd name for a horse but nevertheless he gets top billing in this year’s John Battaglia Stakes by virtue of his very strong seven length win four weeks ago at a mile at Turfway Park. He had finished fourth four weeks prior to that but under RED HOT Irving Moncada, who rides back, the colt established the pace and came home strongly. Despite winning that race leading from start to finish, he doesn’t need the lead to win as he closed for his other win in September and for second against sinners at this distance in November. Moncada also rode Comin in Hot (10) in his most recent race, winning the Turfway Prevue Stakes, but has chosen California Burrito here and it could be a wise choice because the colt is related to two stakes winners on all-weather including Stanley House, who was competitive on the all-weather at Woodbine in the big three-year-old races two years ago. Trainer Drury, who has won one-third of his races (seven of 22) at the meeting and jockey Moncada have an exceptional record together, with 9 wins from 30 starts on seven different horses, and this horse should add to their record together.

Baby Max (7) won the Leonatus Stakes over the track at a mile last month, his second win in three races around two turns, with the other start a near miss when a head back at the wire. Last year’s Leonatus Stakes winner was Epic ride, who lost in this race by inches, so Baby Max is a strong contender as well. He had made his local debut on December 6 and missed by a head then improve nicely second time at the meeting so should take another step forward and be a strong contender again.

King of Ashes (8) ships up from Florida after winning on their similar all-weather track at this distance on January 18. Like Baby Max, King of Ashes narrowly lost in his all-weather debut prior to that and is on a pattern for nice improvement. Trainer Walsh has nearly as good a record at the meeting as Drury, six for 24, and this colt has a nice closing kick. The main reason he’s rated just slightly lower than the other two is that win came in a maiden race whereas the other two have both beaten winners in addition to breaking their maidens.
