It is a huge day of racing at both Gulfstream Park and Santa Anita Park on Saturday, so Xpressbet and 1/ST BET are wheeling back one of our most popular promotions!

Here are a pair of my Saturday Exacta-Thon Plays at each venue:

Gulfstream Park Race 9: Canadian Turf (G3)

There is very little speed signed on in this 8.5-furlong test over the Gulfstream grass. This should not only benefit likely pacesetter #5 Silent Heart, but also #4 Major Dude. The son of Bolt d’Oro makes his third start off the freshening after being caught wide most of the way in the Pegasus World Cup Turf (G1). There is very little chance they go as fast early in this spot, which should put the Todd Pletcher trainee in a perfect ground saving stalking position under one of the best around in Irad Ortiz Jr. The 5YO appears poised for a big run on the class drop.

I will play Major Dude with the aforementioned Silent Heart and then over top #3 Fort Washington and Irish Aces.

Gulfstream Park Race 11: Gulfstream Park Mile (G2)

There is no doubt this year’s Gulfstream Park Mile goes through #1 Mindframe. The Constitution colt put forth two very big efforts to start his career and followed it up with near misses in the Belmont (G1) and Haskell (G1). Todd Pletcher has given him time off until now where he heads into his 4YO debut off a long series of drills at Palm Beach Downs. The $600k Keeneland September 2022 purchase is the likeliest winner based on his 3YO campaign, but this is his first start since mid-July and he draws the rail.

#3 Encino also makes his first start as a 4YO. The son of Nyquist did not dazzle in 2024 like Mindframe or compete against the best in his crop but he won 3 of 4 with his lone loss coming by just a neck on debut. His comeback race was a paid work out, but he is capable of a career best performance second off the layoff for Brad Cox. He makes sense, much like the chalk

I will not be surprised if Mindframe and/or Encino run well, but both come with question marks, so I will lean on the veteran #7 Steal Sunshine. The Bobby Dibona trainee was outrun in the Pegasus World Cup (G1), but drops in class and moves back to a configuration he has had a lot of success over throughout his 26-race career. He is the one I trust most to run his race, especially over this surface and distance.

Santa Anita Park Race 7:

I could not get past 5-2-morning line favorite #8 Nene Diamond in this allowance event for fillies and mares. The Slugo Racing runner moves back to the lawn after a dominant front running victory over the main track on January 23. It is relatively rare to see horses run fast on both dirt and turf, but this mare appears to be an exception. She missed by a nose in her first grass start and followed it up with win over this course despite some traffic issues. The fact she draws outside the other speeds adds to her case.

I will hope to find a little value underneath Nene Diamond with #1 Shuangxi and #7 Miss Mandalay. Shuangxi drops in class after being swallowed up by her red-hot stablemate Queen Maxima last out. The class relief gives her a shot to run much better in her second try off the bench. Miss Mandalay cuts back a half furlong after a half-length defeat at double-digit odds last month. The Dandy Man filly enters this first-level allowance in the best form of her career.

Santa Anita Race 10: Santa Anita Handicap (G1)

The Santa Anita Handicap came up strong this year in large part due to Todd Pletcher and Brad Cox each shipping out a runner from the east coast.

Locked was made the 3-2-morning line choice after his runner-up effort in the Pegasus World Cup (G1). He was no match for White Abarrio that afternoon, but did blow the break costing him several lengths. Perhaps that is why Pletcher adds the blinkers. I am rarely in love with horses making equipment changes before big races and that is the case here. Pletcher is just 2 for his last 23 with a $0.47 ROI when adding the shades for the first time in graded stakes races. Add that to the cross-country ship and lack of experience at 10-furlongs and you have a favorite worth taking a shot against despite his obvious talent.
I will do so with #3 Hit Show. The 5-2-second choice has mostly beaten second tier graded stakes fields throughout his career, but should get a great setup in the Big Cap given the plethora of early zip types signed on. The presence of Flavien Prat and the 1 1/4-mile distance both should help.

I will key box Hit Show with fellow late runner #4 Katonah, who comes off a win in the San Pasqual (G2) and #9 Tarantino, who I am hoping is taken just off the pace with the move from the rail to the far outside.

Race of the Week: Saturday's Santa Anita Handicap

The Lead:
Led by the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap, Kentucky Derby Future Wager favorite Barnes in the San Felipe, and a pair of graded turf stakes, Saturday's card at The Great Race Place will be its most important of 2025 so far. The historic Big 'Cap at 1-1/4 miles goes as Race 10 and has an influx of intrigue as Todd Pletcher brings Locked from Florida and Brad Cox sends Hit Show from New Orleans.

The Santa Anita Handicap is part of Saturday's $5,000 Exacta-Thon promotion from 1/ST BET and Xpressbet. Horseplayers on both platforms can share in additional money by successfully hitting exactas on the Santa Anita card as well as Gulfstream Park's Fountain of Youth Day program.

Field Depth:
Grade 1 winners LOCKED and EXPRESS TOUR have the signature scores in this race, while HIT SHOW, J B STRIKES BACK and KATONAH are Grade 2 winners. MIRAHMADI is Grade 1-placed. There's no overwhelming class edge here, more so a decision pending on how the eastern and midwest form of LOCKED and HIT SHOW compare with the western handicap division.

Pace:
MIRAHMADI has more natural speed than these and likely will be sent to the front, though J B STRIKES BACK is the inner-most speed in post 4 to his inside and outside pressing could come from MIDNIGHT MAMMOTH and TARANTINO. This should be a solid to quick pace for 1-1/4 miles. Note both the San Pasqual and Laffit Pincay Jr. preps had opening half-miles in the 45s, and horses part of those mixes do return here.

Our Eyes:
Here are my horse-by-horse notes.

#1-EXPRESS TRAIN: 2022 Santa Anita Handicap winner, now age 8, hasn't won in 7 limited starts since signature career victory. Missed all of 2023 and was competitive in 3 stakes last year upon his reappearance for trainer John Shirreffs. Runner-up Jan. 25 in the Grade 2 San Pasqual local prep to return rival Katonah. A win would match 1947 Big 'Cap hero Olhaverry for the eldest runner to do so.

#2-NEW KING: Most lightly raced runner in the field makes his sixth career start and first stakes appearance. Bob Baffert trainee was no match for stablemate and SA Handicap rival Mirahmadi in a January allowance matchup but won his last start over 1-1/16 miles. Into Mischief colt assigned just 115 pounds on the handicap scale and partners with Mike Smith for the first time.

#3-HIT SHOW: $1.4 million earner won 4 of 6 races in 2024 and opened his current season a winner in the Grade 3 Louisiana Stakes at Fair Grounds with a furious late rally. Carried co-top weight of 124 pounds in the Big 'Cap and lures stakes phenom pilot Flavien Prat. Well-traveled colt will make Santa Anita the 12th different track at which he's competed. First try at 1-1/4 miles since finishing fifth in the 2023 Kentucky Derby.

#4-J B STRIKES BACK: Trainer Doug O'Neill lost him in a $20,000 maiden claimer last summer at Del Mar, claimed him back immediately for $25,000 and has orchestrated a rapid rise since. Won back-to-back Del Mar allowances in November and then pulled a 16-1 upset in the Grade 2 Laffit Pincay Jr. Stakes at Santa Anita on Dec. 26. All or nothing at 9: 4-0-0, this will be his first start beyond 1-1/16 miles.

#5-MIRAHMADI: $1 million Into Mischief colt struggled to find the winner's circle until his ninth start, many of those efforts at Del Mar. His Santa Anita form, however, has been outstanding (3: 2-1-0), including an October maiden romp by 10 lengths and a Jan. 4 allowance wire job by 4-1/2 lengths. Juan Hernandez pilots and they're assigned a feathery 116 pounds, getting as many as 8 pounds from the favorites -- significant over 10 furlongs. Training exceptionally well and we'll see how far he can take them.

#6-KATONAH: Doug O'Neill trainee returned from a year layoff last summer for a 5-race campaign that saw him second in the San Diego and fifth in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, both at Del Mar. He opened 2025 with a rallying win in the Grade 2 San Pasqual over 9 furlongs at Santa Anita. He's 4-for-10 here on dirt and 1-for-7 in all other spots. Regular rider Tiago Pereira returns.

#7-LOCKED: Likely favorite carries co-top weight of 124 pounds off a win in Aqueduct's Grade 2 Cigar Mile and runner-up in Gulfstream's Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup. He's been bet to favoritism in each of his last 6 starts. Jose Ortiz returns to the saddle and replaces John Velazquez, who opts to ride Todd Pletcher stablemate River Thames in Gulfstream's same-day Fountain of Youth Stakes. Locked is 3: 1-1-1 in true, 2-turn races and this will be the longest test of his career while adding blinkers for the first time.

#8-MIDNIGHT MAMMOTH: Pace factor wilted at 23-1 in the Grade 2 Pasqual local prep and could factor in the early tempo at best. He did win Del Mar's Grade 3 Cougar II over 12 furlongs this summer but has been well off that form in his last 2. Craig Dollase legs up jockey Armando Ayuso.

#9-TARANTINO: Peter Eurton claimed this one for $40,000 last summer at Del Mar and has gotten a strong return. He's 5: 2-2-1 since, including runner-up performances in the Grade 2 Laffit Pincay Jr. and Grade 3 Native Diver. Flat finishes late have been his downfall going shorter and he'll need an unlikely softer early pace to extend the trip to 10 furlongs.

Most Certain Exotics Contender:
HIT SHOW has won 5 of 7 starts over the past year and has a determined late style that should translate well to a 1-1/4 miles race that appears to have a legitimate pace. Flavien Prat doesn't make many mistakes.

Best Longshot Exotics Contender:
KATONAH won't be a massive price, but not among the favorites, and his Santa Anita form puts him in the mix. While he hasn't been this far, he gave the appearance in the San Pasqual that he'll be running better than several of these late.

6^th race [Stymie, 1 mi] – (4) Winnin’onweekends (A/C) was a winner of a low level starter allowance at Aqueduct in January by more than 14 lengths with a front-end effort and was bet down from 8-1 to 5-1. (5) Bank Frenzy won his last two starts in a second-level allowance and then a NY-bred stake race in December. (3) Yo Daddy won 3 of his last 4 starts racing from off the pace moving through the allowance conditions for Linda Rice. (1) Concealed Carry was a stakes winner at Parx Racing in October for a trainer who has done well shipping to New York.

7^th race [Busher, 1 mi] – (4) Volleyballprincess won the Ruthless last month by 10 lengths and ships from Parx once again. (3) Drexel Hill changed to the barn of Whit Beckman after starting her career at Woodbine. She raced twice at Fair Grounds including a third in the Silverbulletday. Blinkers come off after a try with them. (9) Sharp Smile broke her maiden in her third try and then was third in the Busanda. (5) Amarth will make her 2025 debut after breaking her maiden and winning an allowance in Kentucky. In the Untapable, she had to steady in the stretch.

8^th race [Gotham (G3), 1 mi] – (8) McAfee made his first two starts at Churchill Downs and was a debut winner in November. He returned three weeks later to run second by a neck in a starter allowance. McAfee is a half-brother of last year’s Horse of the Year Thorpedo Anna. (9) Garamond won the only start of his career for Juddmonte and Chad Brown in a maiden at Tampa Bay Downs as a 4-5 favorite. He finds a field that gives him a chance to be successful as he steps onto the Derby trail. (10) My Mitole showed significant improvement in his four starts with victories in one-turn miles in his last two starts at Aqueduct. (5) Sand Devil is one of two undefeated and stakes-winning NY-breds in this field. He won a state-bred allowance going a mile by more than 12 lengths.

10^th race [NY, Md Sp Wt, 6F] – (1) Vekinda was second in all five of his starts and may have found the right field to get that maiden victory. (6) Merica’s Back was fourth in his debut at 7-1 at Aqueduct three weeks ago. (3) Roofer has shown early speed in his last two races. (9) Share the Ludt will make his first start of the year. He was second in the New York Breeders Futurity and then in a maiden at Gulfstream Park. He will run with first-time Lasix.

Best bets: Volleyballprincess (7^th); Vekinda (10^th). Best Value: Winnin’onweekends (6^th); McAfee (8^th).

6th race – (9) Disruptor was odds-on in his debut and finished third. Can make amends here. (4) Shangrala Road is a firster from Cox who can be the main rival. (1) Camp Evans merits a look from the rail. (3) Harbe was second in his debut and cannot be ignored. Betting strategy: 9 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3-4-9.

8th race – (4) La Cara was an impressive stakes winner at Tampa and looks best here. (6) Ballerina d’Oro should be closing stoutly at the end. (1) The Queens M G can be a force off her best try. Race 7 at Aqueduct | Saturday, March 1 | Post Time 3:47 PM Eastern

Busher Stakes | Purse $200,000 | Fillies, Three Years Old | One Mile

Analysis and top contenders:

She’s Fascinating (8) broke through with her best race by far five weeks ago, at the same one-mile trip here at Aqueduct as the Busher Stakes, crushing the field by eight lengths and earning an 88 Equibase Speed Figure just one point less than the 89 figure Volleyballprincess (4) earned winning the Ruthless Stakes on February 1 over the track. She’s Fascinating started her career around two turns and on turf last October, both very tough questions to ask a horse which had never run before, and she didn’t do much running in that race when seventh of 11. She improved quite a bit next time out on November 21 when third at a mile on a sloppy track then when returning much more physically and mentally mature in January she ran very professionally as she stalked the top two in third for the first half mile before getting within a head of the lead then accelerating to be two lengths in front with an eighth of a mile to run. Jockey Jose Lezcano was aboard for the first time in victory and rides back and we an expect good improvement off that effort in her second start off the layoff and as a three-year-old. I’m not concerned about She’s Fascinating moving from maiden to stakes as most of these have just one win to their credit.

Volleyballprincess (4) also improved to a career-best effort in her third start, the same as She’s Fascinating, when winning the Ruthless Stakes on February 1 by 10 lengths. She won despite the jockey dropping the crop with three-sixteenths of a mile to run but she was in front at that point. Since the race, Volleyballprincess put in a strong workout of five furlongs in 58.6 at Parx, where she had shipped from before the Ruthless and ships from again, with jockey Ruiz in the saddle once more. She too is on a pattern for improvement.

One additional horse to use on exacta tickets, in the second position, is Liam in the Dust (1), who ships in from Kentucky and adds blinkers while bringing along excellent jockey Machado. She’s never been worse than second in three similar races around one turn including the Grade 3 Pocahontas Stakes, and she could rally to be part of the exacta.

Bets:

Win Bets: Considering how much it appears She’s Fascinating (8) and Volleyball Princess (4) stand out in terms of win probability versus the others, I would strongly consider betting either, or both, to win at odds of 8 to 5 or higher.

Race 8 at Aqueduct | Saturday, March 1 | Post Time 4:18 PM Eastern

Gotham Stakes – Grade 3 | Purse $300,000 | Three Year Olds | One Mile

Analysis:

In a race where most are either recent maiden or statebred stakes winners, no horse is a standout, but McAfee (8) is one of those that are most interesting. He debuted at six furlongs in November and beat 10 horses rather easily then when stretched out to the same one-turn mile trip as the Gotham for his second start on November 24, McAfee missed by a head but showed a lot of ability when moving up from fourth early in the stretch to be beaten a head on the wire. Rested three months, he’s likely to be much stronger physical and mentally, and it must be pointed out his breeding is exceptional as he is a half-brother to champion Thorpedo Anna.

Flood Zone (7) ships in from Florida for trainer Brad Cox after what appears to be a private purchase. That makes sense given his strong five length win second time out on January 4 following a three-quarter length defeat when second in his debut one month earlier. Coming up from Florida to ride is Reylu Gutierrez, who was aboard in both starts to date. The 98 Equibase Speed Figure he earned (compared to 90 + improvement expected for McAfee) is the second fastest figure in the race behind the 100 Sand Devil (5) earned winning a stakes race restricted to New York breds. Flood Zone should really like this one-mile trip as a son of Frosted out of a Curlin mare and appears and going to a mile around one turn off the six furlong trips of his last two races is not a concern.

Scorching (1) deserves a bit of attention because, although all three of his races have bene on all-weather or turf, he’s bred to run as well on conventional dirt as a son of Mo Town. He won easily by five lengths in his second career start in a race restricted to Ontario breds then stretched out to two turns and moving to turf last October, Scorching led late, lost by a nose in the photo, then was moved up to first when the winner was disqualified. That effort earned a 97 figure which puts him right there with the best in the field, and he too cold be more physically mature as a three-year-old than when seen last fall. He’s been working on dirt on the training track at Belmont and should be familiar with the surface.

Bets:

Win: I would consider betting McAfee (8) and Flood Zone (7) to win at odds of 2 to 1 or more.

If Scorching (1) is higher than 4 to 1 near post time, I would not hesitate to bet him to win as well.

Race 13: (6) River Thames was an impressive allowance and maiden winner. Seems ready to step up and handle stakes company. (3) Burnham Square won the Holy Bull and looks like the main rival. (7) Neoequos has keen early speed and may hang around until the end. (1) Gate to Wire will be helped by a ground-saving trip. Betting strategy: 6 to win. Exacta and trifecta box: 1-3-6-7.

A field of 10 was drawn and a fast pace is expected in this one-turn mile race which is carded as race 8. Post time is set for 4:18 pm EST. Race 8 – The San Felipe is a [50-20-15-10-5] points qualifier on the road to the Kentucky Derby 2025. Bob Baffert trains three of the horses in the field of six. Post time is set for 6:30 pm EST. (2) Journalism makes his 2025 debut following a victory on the Kentucky Derby trail in the Los Alamitos Futurity (G2) where he earned 10 Derby points. In that victory he defeated three Baffert runners when he sat in a stalking position and drew off to win by more than three lengths. (3) Barnes is undefeated in two starts as a heavy favorite with a maiden win at Churchill Downs as a 2-year-old and then this year in the seven-furlong San Vicente at Santa Anita. He is well known for his name and his $3.2 million yearling sale price. (4) Rodriguez is also from the Baffert barn and he ran three times breaking his maiden in his second start and then finishing second in the Robert B. Lewis (G3) behind his stablemate and champion Citizen Bull earning 10 Derby points. (1) Mellencamp is the third Baffert runner in the field. He makes his fifth start and is still a maiden. He was second in maiden races in his debut and then last month and has a fifth-place finish in the Los Al Futurity. Betting strategy: Exacta 2 with 3.

COMMENTS: BARNES is undefeated in a pair of two easy wins for trainer Bob Baffert and is the current Kentucky Derby favorite. RODRIGUEZ ran second behind CITIZEN BULL who is currently the second Kentucky Derby favorite. JOURNALISM has improved in each of his races and has high caliber late speed.
