NBA (563) PORTLAND TRAILBLAZERS VS (564) CLEVELAND CAVALIERS
Take: (564) CLEVELAND CAVALIERS
The Cleveland Cavaliers are set to host the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland. The Cavaliers have been on a remarkable run, boasting a 49-10 record and currently leading the Eastern Conference by 7.5 games over the Boston Celtics. They secured a significant 123-116 victory over the Celtics on Friday, with Donovan Mitchell delivering an outstanding performance, scoring 41 points on 13-16 shooting. However, Mitchell has been ruled out for Sunday's game due to rest. Despite his absence, the Cavaliers have demonstrated depth, with players like Evan Mobley contributing consistently; Mobley recorded a double-double against Boston with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Cleveland's offense ranks second in the league, averaging 122.9 points per game, while their defense allows 111.3 points per game, placing them 11th in the NBA. The Trail Blazers enter the matchup with a 27-33 record, currently positioned 12th in the Western Conference. They are on a four-game winning streak, including a decisive 121-102 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on Friday. During this streak, Portland's offense has been prolific, averaging 126.3 points per game over their last four contests. Shaedon Sharpe led the team against Brooklyn with 25 points, while Dalano Banton added 23 points off the bench. However, the Trail Blazers are facing significant injury challenges. Key players such as Jerami Grant (knee) and Deni Avdija (quadriceps) are listed as questionable, while Robert Williams III (knee) and Deandre Ayton (calf) have been ruled out. The Cavaliers' impressive home record and overall performance this season position them as favorites, even without Donovan Mitchell. Their balanced offense and defense have been key to their success. The Trail Blazers, despite their recent offensive surge, may struggle due to their injury-depleted roster. The absence of key frontcourt players could make it challenging to contain Cleveland's interior presence, particularly Evan Mobley. Additionally, Portland's defense, which ranks 18th in the league by allowing 114.1 points per game, will need to step up to counter Cleveland's high-powered offense. The Cavs will be without their star player in Mitchell as he's expected to rest here on Sunday. Still, I look for the Cavs to have plenty left to take care of a bottom tier West team. Play Cleveland.
