Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    March 3, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

Yonkers Raceway has an 11-race card. The $2.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 8, and the sequence will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 8 (9:05 PM EST)

3-Ammo (5/2)-Comes off a game effort to come a close 2nd and now tries the Invites. Could very well be up to the challenge in only the 2nd start since Dec 9th.
7-Verdun (8-1)-Pat Lachance had the 5-year-old closing sharply in last which was the first start since 1-27. Best to respect, and hopefully the 8-1 ML line holds up because this contest could set up for a closer.

    Race 9 (9:25 PM EST)

2-Rock Diamonds N (3-1)-The Joe B 12-yr-old was dialed on high in last and easily beat a similar field going gate to wire as an odds on favorite. This might not be as easy but should be a main player again.
6-Venturesome Arden N (3-1)-Jason Bartlett posts 29% winners when working for the Bucci stable. Arden won the last time Bartlett steered going gate to wire. Now faces better and there is gate speed inside, so needs a sharp steer. But has won 12 of 38 at Yonkers, so will respect chances and not let the 6-year-old bust up the tix.

    Race 10 (9:45 PM EST)

1-Final Cheeserecipe (8/5)-Beat this kind with a 56.3 back half and now makes the 1st start for the Adamczyk barn. Yannick Gingras should work a cozy trip and be in the hunt at the wire.
3-Big Dream Fella (3-1)-Will lean to a veteran who put in a needed start at PcD and now lands in a nice spot to take an overdue picture. Brent Holland will be at the controls for the Laterza barn and could be sitting on a big try.

    Race 11 (10:05 PM EST)

1-Just Plain Loco (7/2)-Needed more in the late going at Stga in the last 2 starts at the Open Handicap level. Using from the rail against a soft group of $30k claimers. George Brennan should be on the point or in the 2-hole and could down this crew with an efficient trip.
3-Saddle Up (8/5)-This will be the 2nd race for the Nick DeVita barn after a claim and Bartlett gets the assignment. The 8-time winner in 2024 is 0-5 this year, but this could be a spot to wake up. Not loving the short morning line but Bartlett has been red hot, and when steering for this barn he posts 37% winners.

    $2 Late Pick 4

    3,7/2,6/1,3/1,3
    Total Bet=$32

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

      Fair Grounds - Race #4
#8 Yankeestrolgy His form hasn't been going the right direction lately, but there are still a couple races on his page that would be competitive here, and he has occasionally shown some ability to get past horses.
#10 The Wicked Cat Think he can be a handful here with some prompting pace from the outside, and this easier spot makes a lot of sense as the meet starts to near a close.
#4 First Samaritan He's got some of that Delta pace to use early on in here, but I don't know that he's getting a huge breather here with the top choice and a couple others likely to show some speed too.
Race Summary Yankeestrolgy needs a form reversal here, but he at least has some proven form passing horses previously, and that may be at a premium in this kind of spot today.
      Fair Grounds - Race #6
#3 She's Single Again Honest type fits well enough here and might be able to use her grinding ability to get past a bad bunch, and maybe the change of scenery will help wake her up enough to get her over the top.
#4 Little Bit O Storm She's another who has a bit of appeal from off the pace, and I like that her form seems to be heading the right way in those last couple starts. Could see her punching home -- will stand with these two.
#7 Delicate Not totally sure what to make of her -- she's a clear kind of threat on the drop with a couple compelling races on her page, but she tends to pack it in pretty hard when she starts to quit.
Race Summary She's Single Again and Little Bit O Storm both have a little bit of ability from behind horses, and that may be the key today in a pretty modest race.
      Fair Grounds - Race #7
#3 Lady Star Think she could be live at first asking with a pedigree to be OK for a Louisiana turf horse, and I wouldn't be shocked to see her run to that first out.
#5 Pretty Prairie She's already got a handful of losses at short prices on her page, so I definitely wouldn't want to be here at anything too short again while trying turf for the first time. That said, she's an obvious player on form.
#7 Tensas Bolt Her local debut was pretty solid, and she's got just enough spying pace to think she'll find a trip with these. Second off the break could do the trick.
Race Summary Lady Star goes first out today, so take a look at her on the track and tote ahead of this one. Think she might be ready to make some noise in a race that is otherwise difficult to figure.

        #4
        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Turf Paradise - Race #3
#4 IT’S SAUL RIGHT (6-1) Seeks return to 2024 form in first start on conventional dirt for new barn.
#3 TEAM CONCEPT (5-2) Dismissed at 3-1 or less in last six starts but didn’t win any.
#1 FAT AND FURIOUS (4-1) Favorable post switch after several wide trips lately.
Race Summary IT’S SAUL RIGHT disappeared on the turf last out, but she won four times in lower-level claiming races in 2024 while the rest of the field combined for five wins. She won on five days’ rest in December, so give her the benefit of the doubt for a win and place bet.
        Turf Paradise - Race #4
#4 HAUGHTY KITTY (5-1) Validated 67-1 runner-up finish with deceptively good fourth at this distance.
#5 DADDY’S GIRL (3-1) Lightly-raced 7yo has kept busy in the mornings for return from long layoff.
#8 ONELLA (4-1) Drops off Evans claim, has the speed but has to carry it farther in repeat attempt.
Race Summary Class droppers abound in this bottom-level long sprint. HAUGHTY KITTY validated a near 67-1 shocker with an equally good follow-up try. She trailed into the turn, gained quickly into a fast pace while in-hand, only to have her momentum halted when squeezed at the top of the stretch. She regrouped to finish fourth and remains a good value play. Bet to win and place and play 4-5 and 4-8 exactas.
        Turf Paradise - Race #6
#1 DORADUS (2-1) Must get away cleanly to live up to likely favoritism in 13th start.
#3 SIBERIAN SLEW (10-1) Good works since arrival, need not be much to beat these.
#4 VINNIEBOB (3-1) Piled up checks last year, holds tactical edge, stands 0-for-37.
Race Summary DORADUS left too much work to do after a terrible start, advanced in-hand but lacked stretch kick behind the loose-running winner. He can make amends in his third start of the year and third at Turf Paradise. Bet to win and place and play a 1, 3/1, 3, 4 exacta.

              Fair Grounds - Race #8 - Post: 4:15pm - Claiming - 8.3 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $13,500 Class Rating: 84

              Rating:

              #6 NERVY (ML=8/1)
              #4 GAME AND GORMLEY (ML=9/2)
              #2 IRON MOON (ML=5/1)

NERVY - Have to give this gelding a good chance. Ran a solid contest last time out within the last 30 days. GAME AND GORMLEY - Larrosa has an 'uncoupled' entry here. Best to beware the longer priced half. Delcid was aboard this gelding last time around the track and was impressed enough to take the equine right back. Have to make this gelding a solid contender; he comes off a nice effort on Feb 5th. Larrosa seems to have this gelding primed for a big effort. His workout pattern is super. IRON MOON - Hernandez and Ramirez getting together are a horseplayer's friend. This thoroughbred coming off a nice contest in the last month or so is a solid contender in my book.

              Vulnerable Contenders: #9 JACKSON D (ML=3/1), #3 TONTERIA (ML=7/2), #5 TAKEOVER FIFTYFOUR (ML=6/1),

JACKSON D - This gelding earned a rating in his last race which probably isn't good enough in today's event. TONTERIA - Difficult to take this horse at these odds after the finish position (fifth) in the last affair. TAKEOVER FIFTYFOUR - This less than sharp equine ran a disappointing speed rating in the last race. He shouldn't improve and will probably lose in today's race running that number.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #6 NERVY to win at post-time odds of 7/2 or better
              EXACTA WAGERS: Box [2,4,6]
TRIFECTA WAGERS: Box [2,4,6] Total Cost: $6

                # 5 MELITTLEFROSTGIRL 3/1
DYNAMITENDIAMONDS has a quite good shot to take this race. Have to consider solely on class, with some of the top class numbers of this group. Formidable gamble today with second time Lasix. Sanchezpinero has shown excellent profits (+42 ROI ) with horses in dirt route events. WYLDA WYLDE - Make a note that this one runs on Lasix today. MELITTLEFROSTGIRL - Strong chance today with second time Lasix.

                  # 4 DRILL CITY 2/1
My choice for this event is HOLIDAYS ARMY BRAT especially at such a decent 8/1. Should go to the front end and should never look back. Had one of the strongest Speed Figures of this group of horses in this race in her last race. JOHN FITZGERALD - This gelding has been consistently running well in his latest outings. DRILL CITY - This jockey and conditioner team has produced some sharp return on investment numbers at this track. Lately Meyers has provided investors with a very strong winning percentage with horses moving in dirt sprint races.

                    Turf Paradise - Race #8 - Post: 4:30pm - Optional Claiming - 6.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $22,000 Class Rating: 92

                    Rating:

                    #2 IN VRONSKY STYLE (ML=12/1)
                    #4 TRIPLE PASS (ML=3/1)
                    #8 BEAU'S CHARM (ML=4/1)
                    #7 IT'S TURBO (ML=5/1)
                    #5 FAST CHAZ (ML=5/1)

IN VRONSKY STYLE - It looks like Montalvo had to learn all about this gelding on February 10th when riding him for the first time. Back atop again today. This jockey and handler have a high win percent together. TRIPLE PASS - This gelding is in fine form. Finished second on Feb 17th. This gelding is rounding his way back into shape. Should race well today. BEAU'S CHARM - Corbett and Owens perform well when they team up. Tough to top a win pct of 31. Owens brings him back again. I recommend you stay with this hot colt. This animal picks up a lot of money per race around the track. In the top spot in this contest. IT'S TURBO - Really think this race horse is going to be very close near the finish line. FAST CHAZ - I like to bet on this angle, a thoroughbred coming back off a nice effort within the last month. This colt likes to be near the lead. Today's affair is a shorter distance and should aid his chances to win. Just see his latest speed figure, 92. That one fits well in this field.

Vulnerable Contenders: #9 FORTY NINER GOLD (ML=9/2), #3 WEST OF ME (ML=6/1),

FORTY NINER GOLD - I find it hard to play any racer in a sprint event at 9/2 when he hasn't shown any positive results in sprints in the last two months. Showed very little in the last race. Really don't expect improvement today. Recorded a disappointing speed figure in the last race in a $25,000 Claiming race on Jan 25th. Unlikely to see an improved performance off of that rating. WEST OF ME - Not likely for this thoroughbred to do much running with no recent success in a short distance contest. Garnered a substandard speed rating in the last race in the Manzano on October 12th. Improbable to see an improved performance off of that fig.
