Fair Grounds - Race #2

#1 Josh G	He'll likely get a decent run while tucked in behind some quicker players on the turn back, but I liked his last a little bit when facing better, and something similar might do the trick here.
#4 Maybe Eye'll Call	He drops in for a tag off the bench after that stakes try at Evangeline last summer, but I worry he's going to be overbet in a fairly competitive race.
#5 Jacque Coteau	His only local try wasn't much, but it came going long, and he has put things together nicely enough in those two Delta starts since. Wouldn't surprise, but think he lands underneath.
Race Summary	Josh G woke up at Delta last out, and that kind of try might be an OK fit with this claiming group after he tried a couple tougher groups here earlier this season.

Fair Grounds - Race #5

#1 Duvee	He came back with a chase-and-fade run off the long break last time out, and he should be tighter with that race under his belt. He's got what should be controlling pace from the inside?
#2 Highland Creek	Dangerous guy should be in a great spot to track the top choice throughout, and he has turned in some pretty sharp efforts against tough customers in some of those races on his page.
#5 Kenmore West	He drilled a softer group last time out when getting to this trip, and he is quick enough to have a go at the top choice early. Capable with his best.
Race Summary	Duvee has some price appeal here after the flat comeback run, but that sprint try should have him set for something better today while stretching out.

Fair Grounds - Race #9

#12 Native Catalina	Not too impressed with anything in here on paper, so take a look at this debuter on the tote and track ahead of this. Think she might be live enough to land this.
#14 Drama Queenie	Think she's supposed to be tough with this group after a couple of pretty solid efforts, and she has some positional pace in a race without a ton of serious early burn.
#3 Diamond Country	She has had a lot of chances, but she can occasionally flash a little pace that could make her at least a little bit of a danger with these.
Race Summary	Native Catalina is a fresh face in a race where I don't trust any of them much, and she might be able to avoid any early trouble from out here with this cheap crew.

3^rd race [OC50k/SAL50k, 1 mi] – (5) Higher Force (B) was fractious in the gate, got far back, and gained going seven wide. Blinkers come off. (6) Heavenly Light broke her maiden with a $50,000 tag and then ran second twice at this starter allowance level. (1) Helen’s Revenge was third in her first start for Linda Rice on a muddy and sealed track. (7) Pocket Queens lunged at the start but was still able to win a $40,000 maiden claimer by two lengths getting up in the final yards.

5^th race [Md Sp Wt, 6F] – (4) Elemiah (B) was bet down in her debut to 7-2 back in July at Saratoga and finished second behind an experienced horse that came back to win her next start. She gets first-time Lasix for her second race. (3) Decree and Declare debuted as the favorite in September, pressed the pace, and ran fourth. Following the layoff, she gets blinkers and Lasix for the first-time. (7) I’m Very Sweet was second in her first start in November where she pressed the pace and was second. (2) She’s Complicated ran twice and finished second and third.

9^th race [OC 45k/N1X, 1 mi] – (4) Points Is Points (A) got jostled to the back of the field, then swapped leads during a stretch duel, lost by a nose, and finished 10 lengths clear of the rest of the field. (2) Grammy Girl has two wins from her last three starts in a N2L claimer and a starter allowance. (5) Takethemoneyhoney won both of her starts in a maiden special weight at Parx and a state-bred allowance at Laurel. ([1) Save Us Melania won by almost nine lengths last time and (1A) Malu won through the NY-bred allowance conditions.]

The $500,000 Virginia Derby, Colonial Downs

Race 9 – The Virginia Derby, which was formerly run on the turf, is the first Kentucky Derby prep race to be run at Colonial Downs in Virginia. It is the final stop on the Derby to offer [50-25-15-10-5] qualifying points to the top five finishers. A field of nine will go nine-furlongs around one-turn. (7) Rapture comes to the Kentucky Derby trail after just two starts. The Brad Cox runner was second in his debut at Gulfstream Park as the favorite behind a talented horse that won his next start. Rapture did so also when he broke his maiden by more than six lengths at Oaklawn. He should get the right set-up for a move from a stalking position. (6) Getaway Car will ship to the east for Bob Baffert and will be a heavy favorite based on his success as a 2-year-old. He won the Sunland Derby in his 2025 debut and currently has 36 Derby points. Expect him to be on the lead as he tries the longer distance for the first time. (4) Omaha Omaha showed that he can handle today’s distance after closing for third in the Withers at Aqueduct. Before that he was second in the Jerome. (8) Authentic Gallop needed five races to get his first win and then made two big jumps in speed figures in his next two starts. Last month at Oaklawn he had a gutsy win in an allowance by a head. Betting strategy: Exacta box: 4, 6, 7, 8. Trifecta box: 4, 6, 7, 8.

Virginia Derby | Purse $500,000 | Three Year Olds | One Mile and One Eighth

Analysis of the early pace scenario and how it might affect the outcome:

“Pace Makes the Race” is not a clich? statement, because how a race is run in the early stages, the “early pace” often has a big impact on the outcome. The outcome of this year’s Virginia Derby, being run for the first time on dirt since its inception in 1998 and for the first time as part of the “Road to the Derby” series, will be no different. This is because Georgia Magic (10) draws the extreme outside post and when winning his only start, a six-furlong sprint, led from start to finish. He stretches out from a sprint after pressing the fast pace in third, only one-half length from the lead, for the opening half mile, and it is highly likely he will be trying for the lead from the start. John Hancock (2) and Getaway Car (6) have five wins combined to date, and all five were earned leading from start to finish. American Promise (3) earned his only win when leading from start to finish. So, as it stands, it will take only two of the four to go for the lead and run much faster than average, setting up the horses which can stalk the pacesetters for success.

Top win contenders – Rapture (7) and Authentic Gallop (8):

Based on his pedigree, being a son of Uncle Mo out of a Bernardini mare, it is likely trainer Brad Cox believed that Rapture (7) would be better suited to racing at a mile or more so entered him in a one-turn mile race for his career debut in December. Rapture finished second of nine in that race, then when stretched out one-sixteenth of a mile and to two turns for his second career start on January 25, Rapture improved markedly, drawing off by six and one-half lengths in a field of 12 and improving from a 78 Equibase speed figure in his debut, to a 98 figure, which is nearly stakes quality at this time of year. Flavien Prat, who had a career-best year in 2024, rode Rapture to victory and rides back here, choosing this horse whose last win was in a maiden race over John Hancock, who Prat rode to victory in the Sam F. Davis Stakes five weeks ago.

In both starts, Rapture has shown maturity in closing from behind, whereas John Hancock, who earned a 97 figure in the Sam F. Davis, has won both his starts when leading from start to finish. The ability to stalk and pounce is the running style most likely to be successful in the Virginia Derby, because Getaway Car won the Sunland Derby (earning a 100 figure) leading start to finish. With the addition of Georgia Magic to the field, who is stretching out from six furlongs and who earned his only win leading from start to finish, there is a high probability of a faster than average early pace, allowing Prat to put Rapture in a great spot around third or fourth early before kicking on to win the race and establish himself as a contender as we move closer and closer to the first Saturday in May.

Authentic Gallop (8) had won one of three dirt route races as well as had raced on turf twice, prior to his last start four weeks ago at Oaklawn Park. Taking blinkers off which had been worn for all his races since his second start last summer, Authentic Gallop ran the best race of his life, by far, earning a 94 figure which is within range of the 97 to 100 figures earned by John Hancock, Rapture and Getaway Car in their most recent races. However, like Rapture, and not like John Hancock or Getaway Car, Authentic Gallop does not need the early lead to win, having relief from fourth with an eighth of a mile to run in his win last month. Jockey Javier Castellano rides for the first time but that is of no concern considering Castellano rode Mage to win the 2023 Kentucky Derby after taking over for another rider and rode Arcangelo to four straight wins in 2023 including the Belmont Stakes and Travers Stakes, having taken over for another jockey for the first of those wins.

There is no doubt John Hancock (2) and Getaway Car (6) have run fast enough to win this race but it appears they will battle for the lead from the start, perhaps at any cost, and be joined by Georgia Magic (10). If both John Handcock and Getaway Car run in the race, I can’t endorse either of them to win. However, if only one of the pair runs, the other could get the early lead and never look back. John Hancock earned a 96-figure winning in his debut in January then 97 winning the Sam F. Davis, while Getaway Car earned a 100 figure in December when second in the Los Alamitos Futurity then 100 in the Sunland Derby last month following a two-month layoff. It just doesn’t appear to me, based on their previous starts, that either has learned to sit off the pace, even in second, particularly Getaway Car, who ran second from start to finish in the American Pharoah Stakes last October behind Citizen Bull, another Baffert trainee.

American Promise (3) is an interesting horse who could make noise at high odds if he can relax off the pace and rally late. He’s won just one of eight races, but that one, on December 29, earned a 102 figure, good enough to win this race if Rapture doesn’t improve a little and if Authentic Gallop doesn’t improve a bit more than a little. American Promise led from start to finish in that race at one mile and one-sixteenth and had shown some ability to sit off the pace last October when second for the first half mile before leading, then holding onto second place. He had a very poor start in the Southwest Stakes in January when the plan was to lead from the start, then rushed up before tiring. In the Risen Star Stakes last month, he started fifth of 12, moved up to third, then retreated to fifth. Getting his third different jockey in his last three races, this time Nik Juarez, I’m not sure what tactics might be used, but considering he is trained by D. Wayne Lukas and is out of the mare which produced Hoosier Philly, American Promise may warrant a couple of dollars to win so we don’t kick ourselves after the fact.

Authentic Gallop (8) at odds of 7 to 2 or more.

Additionally, “IF” either John Hancock (2) or Getaway Car (6) does not run, the other can be considered for a win bet at 3 to 1 or more.

HURRICANE ALERT is my choice. Is a very strong contender based on figures put up recently under today's conditions. With a solid rider who has won at a solid 17 percent clip over the last month. This has to be one of the top picks. Looks very good to be up on the lead at the first call. SUMMONING DENIS - The average class fig alone makes this horse a solid choice. He should definitely be given a shot given the very good speed numbers. FOOL FOR THE CITY - This gelding obviously likes the distance, going 2 out of 9 in his races recently. Has to be carefully examined based on the decent speed figure posted in the last contest.

GO GO PRANCER - Got to appreciate a good work horse. This colt's last workout was second fastest of the day for the distance. Horse got clobbered in his only race. With a trouble free race, I look for this one to take this race. Going on Lasix for the 1st time. While a common handicapping angle, it's still quite useful. Just check out his recent speed figure, 82. That one looks good in this field. BONNEVILLE JIM - I like the fact that this first time starter has been working over the same track he'll be making his debut on. Mullins has a very strong win pct in grass sprints. This gelding should be ready to win. With no past performance lines, one of the variables I look at are trainer stats, and Mullins has a +246 percent ROI rate with first timers.

HORIZON WILDCAT - This mount ran a most unsatisfactory speed rating in the last race. He shouldn't show signs of improvement and will probably suffer defeat in today's event running that number. HOTHEAD - Improbable that the speed figure he recorded on February 15th will be enough in this contest. HARBOR CODE - Doesn't appear to have enough positive qualities to justify the price.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - GO GO PRANCER - At first glance the last clash doesn't look that good, but upon further inspection that race fits right with this bunch.
