Capacity, quality group offers one of the best betting races of the day and I’ll give a longshot win/place look to #1 Highestdistinction, who was too close to the pace last time and should finish with more flair with a rider change to Adam Beschizza (use in exactas with #10, #3).

#6 Spirit of St Louis is a deserving favorite and never misfires, so we’ll use that one on top of a couple of price chances, #3 What Say Thee and #4 Cameo Performance, who are well-drawn in a field with some outside speed that should hum along early.

Just love the form cycle for #7 As Catch Can, who goes sprint-to-route while second off the layoff and she’s got proven Tapeta form at Woodbine, while owing a ton of respect to #11 White Rocks and her freakish performances at the meeting.

The last time to catch #3 Ahavah at a fair price might be here as the kid sister to star filly Vahva takes a bold bite of the apple off her debut sprint and faces #7 Good Cheer, the unbeaten early favorite for the Kentucky Oaks.

There could be an overheated pace at 1-3/16 miles that beckons #2 Chunk of Gold and #10 Hypnus as the closers to fear, but I have much respect for #1 John Hancock and we’ve seen too many times that these big racing days wind up with speed-favoring tracks.

Phil D’Amato trainees #3 Easter, #6 Gold Phoenix and # Divine Propos all look like the same horse and while none are projected to be at their absolute best going 1-1/2 miles, I’ll lean to #6 Gold Phoenix, who has been training quite well at 1st.tv on video.

8:00 pm ET | Turf Paradise | Race 9 | $50K Phoenix Gold Cup
Favored #1 Redline has won 3 Turf Paradise stakes in as many tries, but exits a bang-up second to Jaxon Travler in which that consistent runner bounced terribly last week at Oaklawn – so give me the freshened #5 Coastal Jazz (7-2 ML) for a 45% winning jockey-trainer combo at TuP.

Fair Grounds - Race #10

#8 Brilliant Berti	I love how honest he is, and I'm hoping he has come forward into his 4-year-old season at least enough to be in the frame with the next guy who is going to hit hard here...
#6 Spirit of St. Louis	Pegasus winner had previously done most of his damage in New York-bred stakes, and he meets a group that probably runs for second if he's able to get right back to that effort today.
#1 Gigante	You'll definitely get a better number on him this time around if you're a fan -- he's better than he showed in that last one but might still be a mild cut below the top tier players in here. He was second here last year at 17/1 off a flat try in the Fair Grounds Handicap....
Race Summary	Brilliant Berti needs a step forward if he's going to hang with Spirit of St. Louis, but I'm hoping there is some upside after the October freshening into his 4-year-old debut.

Fair Grounds - Race #11

#3 Ahavah	Tons of respect for the chalk in here, but I feel like this filly is one of the few in here who could take just a fairly reasonable step forward in this race and stay in the frame with that toughie. Most of the rest need a more surprising reversal of form.
#7 Good Cheer	She only beat three horses in the Rachel Alexandra, but she did it in a way that left at least one moderately talented filly spinning her wheels far behind her. She's the goods...but maybe the top choice is, too?
#8 Secret Faith	Louisiana-bred almost has to be in too deep to land this, but she has a couple of very fast races for a filly like her, and she loves the local footing. Could see her for a share.
Race Summary	Ahavah is an unknown quantity taking a big bite today -- first-out winner running into the super imposing Good Cheer at second asking. But I'll take a shot.

Fair Grounds - Race #12

#7 Vassimo	I like that he's right back in the next race in the local series despite proving no serious threat in that fast Risen Star won by Magnitude. Blinkers could be the key to getting him in the right direction.
#2 Chunk of Gold	Liked the way he ran on at a big price in the local debut after a couple synthetic starts to open his career, and if that run was legit...he's the one to beat today.
#3 Tiztastic	Not a huge fan, but there is some fairly honest form on the page before the mild run last time out, and something like the Southwest effort might be enough to keep him in the frame here.
Race Summary	Fun race, and a fun call to make -- what are you going to do with the Magnitude Risen Star, especially because he's not back. It was a fast race by every account, and it should be key to how this one plays out if it's as legit as it looked.

Turf Paradise - Race #4

#1 DADS ESTRELLA (4-1)	Found room too late on the rail, gets plenty of pace to rally into.
#5 BLESSED ANGEL (9-2)	Just missed in blanket finish against similar foes, makes third start of year.
#6 GO GO SADIE (12-1)	‘Quickly drew clear’ in form-reversing victory over ‘Estrella.’
Race Summary	DADS ESTRELLA checked sharply nearing the turn, and awaited room at the top of the stretch before she ‘finished fast’ on the rail to finish second as the favorite. She draws the rail again but is worth a win and place wager at an inflated price. Also play a 1-4-5-6 exacta box.

Turf Paradise - Race #5

#2 SARWAR (4-1)	Lightly-raced 6yo delivers time and time again, tries Turf Paradise lawn for first time.
#5 KENNEBEC (7-2)	Sustained rally from far turn to finish second, extra half-furlong suits him well.
#7 SALINE RIVER (3-1)	Model of ultra consistency with 7-for-10 record on the turf, fires fresh.
Race Summary	SARWAR rallied to win a six-figure turf allowance at Del Mar in August, won again at one-mile via a disqualification in November, then led between calls in the stretch last month when second in a longer grass test at Santa Anita. Bet to win and place and play a 2,5/2, 5, 7/ALL trifecta.

5^th race [Clm 40000 N2L, 6 ? F] – (5) Proud Divi (A) had the lead and missed the win by a head but finished well clear of the rest of the field. (4) She’s Cool (C) took late money with odds that dropped from 6-1 to 7-2 and finished third. (1) Despo’s Dream drops out of a pair of starter allowances to the N2L level where in October he finished second and was claimed by Linda Rice. (7) Saucy Six has been toiling at this level and should get used underneath in this field.

6^th race [Md Sp Wt, 1 mi] – (7) Stone Cold Kelly was second in both of her starts which were this year at Aqueduct. (4) More Than Grace was second in her debut last year and then was fourth as the favorite in January. Blinkers go on. (6) Madam Opus ships up from Florida for Chad Brown where she finished third in her only start as the 2-1 favorite. (3) That’s Funny will step up from two starts in maiden claimers at Tampa Downs as she joins the New York division of the Sacco barn which is a high percentage winner.

7^th race [NY, Md 30000, 6 ? F] – (4) King Solomon (B) had a big improvement to finish second in his second start and was well ahead of the rest of the field. (8) Tarpaulin ships up from Maryland for his debut for Brittany Russell who wins at a very high rate with first-time starters in claimers. (2) Nine N Four was claimed for $40,000 last month and was then outrun in a maiden special weight. He is competitive in this kind of claimer and blinkers go on. (1) Monte Avi was second last time in a $25,000 claiming maiden.

10^th race [NY, Md 30000, 6 ? F] – (6) Rum Cay (B) stumbled at the start of his debut for Linda Rice, got to the lead, and finished third. (7) Renew the Blue (B) steadied at the start to be last following a layoff and passed horses late. (1) Total Silence missed a win by a nose the last time that he ran for a tag in December at Aqueduct. (11) Consider It Done debuted last month in a maiden special weight where he flashed some early speed and faded.

The $1 Million Louisiana Derby (G2), Saturday, Fair Grounds

Race 12 – 6:42 p.m. EDT – The Louisiana Derby is a [100-50-25-15-10] points qualifier on the road to the 2025 Kentucky Derby. A field of 10 was drawn including two Brad Cox and two from Steve Asmussen that will run 1 3/16 miles which is the longest distance on the Derby trail. (2) Chunk of Gold was second last time in the Risen Star (G2) at Fair Grounds behind Magnitude who got loose on the lead in what was one of the most visually impressive performances on the Derby trail. Chuck of Gold had to overcome trouble at the start and entering the stretch and still defeated several horses that ran well in Derby preps. Chuck of Gold will get a fast pace to set up his closing move which is well-suited to the long stretch at the New Orleans track. (1) John Hancock is clearly the horse to beat with two wins from two starts including the Sam F. Davis on the Derby trail. He will go to the lead again as he did in both of his victories but will have to run a furlong farther as a heavy favorite. (5) Caldera will give Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas a chance to get a second horse Derby qualified. Last time out he had the lead in the Sunland Derby and finished second by a nose to a Bob Baffert runner. He gets a positive rider change. (6) Built gathered Derby points with top three finishes in his last three starts. Blinkers go on for this late runner. Betting strategy: Exacta key box: 2 with 1, 5, 6, 7, 9. Trifecta box: 1, 2, 5, 6.

The $777,777 Jeff Ruby (G3), Saturday, Turfway Park

Racce 12 – 6:25 p.m. EDT – The Jeff Ruby Steaks is also a [100-50-25-15-10] points qualifier on the road to the Kentucky Derby that drew a field of 12. A fast pace is expected and those speed horses will have to handle the increase to nine-furlongs on the Tapeta. (6) Baby Max was second in the Battlaglia Memorial in the first Derby prep at Turfway and won a stakes race before that. A fast pace is projected in the Jeff Ruby since there are a three speed horses with recent front-end victories. Expect Baby Max to sit a stalking trip. (3) California Burrito was the Battaglia winner with a front-end trip and won an allowance at Turfway before that also with early speed. (9) Poster won the Remsen (G2) at Aqueduct on the Derby trail having won his first three starts. He was third in the Sam F. Davis to begin 2025. He had several recent workouts at Turfway Park and thus deserves serious consideration. (12) He’s Not Joking won the Grey Stakes (G3) on the Tapeta at Woodbine and then tried two starts on the dirt on the Derby trail. He had a recent work at Turfway. Betting strategy: Exacta box: 3, 6, 9, 12. Trifecta box: Exacta box: 3, 6, 9, 12.

Race 12 at Turfway Park | Saturday, March 22 | Post Time 6:25 PM Eastern

Jeff Ruby – Grade 3 | Purse $777,000 | Three Year Olds | One Mile and One Eighth

Top contenders:

California Burrito (3) won the local prep for this race, the John Battaglia Memorial Stakes, four weeks ago, for his second straight victory and third in six races. He has improved in each of his last three starts since moving to the all-weather surface at Turfway Park, from an 86 Equibase Speed Figure in December, to 87 in January, to a field high last race 98 figure in the Battaglia. Although he did lead from start to finish in his two most recent races, California Burrito did not run like a horse who needs the lead to win, as he did not slow down in the final quarter mile, and because his first win back in September was earned when rallying from sixth in the early stages. California Burrito won from the four post in an 11 horse field last time out and gets the similar three post in this 12 horse field, so with continued improvement expected gets slight preference among three horses which stick out against the rest in terms of win probability in this year’s Jeff Ruby Steaks.

Charlie’s to Blame (2) won in California in December, on turf going a mile, shipped to Florida to win another last month, went to Kentucky to train, and now shows up at Turfway, like California Burrito going for his third win in a row and second stakes win in a row. Last month Charlie’s to Blame won the Kitten’s Joy Stakes on turf, like California Burrito when leading from start to finish but also like that one not running like a horse that needs the lead to win. Jockey Juan Hernandez comes out from California to ride, having guided Charlie’s to Blame to victory the only time he was aboard, last December. The colt put in a very strong half-mile workout at Turfway (fourth best of 37) coming into the race and from a good inside post should be in contention from start to finish.

Baby Max (6) was sent to post as the 2 to 1 favorite in the Battaglia, compared to 3 to 1 for California Burrito, and ran well as he stalked in third, made a move to get within a head of the lead with an eighth of a mile to run, then battled gamely to come up just a half-length short at the finish. Blinkers go on to help him focus and he’s reunited with jockey Cedillo, who was up for a half-length loss in December and for victory in the Leonatus Stakes in January. This is another colt with improving to do, having gone from an 85 Equibase Speed Figure in December, to 95 in January, to 97, and so he rounds out a very strong trio of win contenders in this field.

Race 12 at Fair Grounds | Saturday, March 22 | Post Time 6:42 PM Eastern

Louisiana Derby – Grade 2 | Purse $1 Million | Three Year Olds | One Mile and Three Sixteenths

Analysis of the early pace scenario and how it might affect the outcome:

“Pace Makes the Race” is not a clich? statement, because how a race is run in the early stages, the “early pace” often has a big impact on the outcome. In this race, if all 10 run as expected, there’s likely to be an “irresistible force” versus an “immovable object” situation where the early pace is concerned. This is because John Hancock (1) draws the inside position in the gate and has led virtually from start to finish in both his races, the best of which was a win in the Sam F Davis Stakes last month with a 97 Equibase Speed Figure. However, Yinzer (4) is just as determined to lead from the start, having led for the first three-quarters of a mile two races back on January 18 (before tiring) and then leading from the start when winning on February 15, both races at Fair Grounds. Although he earned only an 89-speed figure, Yinzer’s 103 and 93 early pace figures and John Hancock’s 98 and 90 figures are comparable and suggest both with go for the lead from the start at any cost. Furthermore, Furio (8) has led from the start and through the opening half mile in all three races, with his only career win coming when leading from start to finish and earning a 91-speed figure. With a jockey change to Luis Saez and an outside post which demands he be sent for the lead from the start, he could run even faster in the early stages then he did when leading early and finishing second last month over the track, with 107 and 97 early pace figures to back that up.

Win contenders:

Considering Instant Replay (9) took advantage of the fast pace set by Furio in that race last month at Fair Grounds, going five paths wide on the turn and drawing off to win by five lengths with gas left in the tank, Instant Replay is very likely to get the same set up, or even better, for his late kick in the Louisiana Derby. Instant Replay was returning from a two-month layoff that day and should improve physically in his second start of the year, so his 100 Equibase figure (which is tied with Caldera for the best last figure in the field) should be improved upon. Jockey Florent Geroux has been the only pilot Instant Replay has had in six starts including both wins, and as the colt’s middle pace and final figure combination (85 then 100) is strong evidence of his ability to close strongly as the pacesetters tire, Instant Replay appears to be the one to beat in this race.

Caldera (5) earned the same 100 figure in his most recent race as Instant Replay did. That effort and figure came when Caldera finished second, beaten a nose, in the Sunland Derby five weeks ago. That was his second race since adding blinkers, and in the first of the pair Caldera drew away to win by the same five length margin as Instant Replay did in his most recent race. In the Sunland Derby, Caldera rallied from fifth after a half mile, to second on the turn, then made the lead by a head with an eighth of a mile to run, but the more experienced Getaway Car fought back to prevail by inches. With that effort Caldera continued a pattern of improvement started in his first two-turn race in December, from a 74 figure, to 93, then to 100. With continued improvement Caldera should be a strong factor down to the wire in this race.

Chunk of Gold (2) won his debut sprinting in December with an 89 figure then when stretched out to a mile and entered in a stakes race on January 16, he ran about the same, earning an 88 figure. Shipping from trainer Ethan West’s base in Kentucky to Fair Grounds for the Risen Star Stakes last month, Chunk of Gold ran into a buzzsaw in the form of Magnitude, who won by nearly 10 lengths. Magnitude is off the Derby trail with an injury, and although Chunk of Gold was no match for the winner, he ran an exceptionally good race as he rallied from eighth to beat Built by a head at the wire. I consider this the “race within the race” because it is as if there was a secondary race going on because the winner was so far in front.
