Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    March 24, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

Yonkers Raceway begins the week with a 10-race card. The $1.00 Pick 5 rolls in Race 5, and it has a $10,000 guaranteed pool. The $2.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 7, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 7 (8:45 PM EDT)

1-Blue Lou (2-1)-Wasn’t used off the gate, then needed to deal with a wide trip and finished a beaten 6th last time. Jason Bartlett sticks over #2 and will look for a more aggressive steer starting from the rail.
2-Soho Dow Jones (5/2)-Has raced well in the 3 starts here and won last time. Has been bet but now bumps up, Bartlett is off and Gingras gets the call. The driver change shouldn’t hurt but could help the price. Still fits and is in line for an efficient trip.

    Race 8 (9:05 PM EDT)

2-Priceless Beach (8/5)-Won 2 in a row, then bumped up and didn’t get a great trip into fast fractions. Willing to toss the last start, gets a new pilot in Scott Zeron and drops in for a tag. The 9-year-old could be dialed on high and drawing inside should help its chances.

    Race 9 (9:25 PM EDT)

5-Night Hawk (5/2)-Raced evenly versus this kind in the first start since 12-31. Did pace the back half in 55.2 and the Burke trainee could be ready for a big try in the 2nd start back after a rest.
6-Smiffy’s Terror (9/2)-Won its 1st start of the year at this level and then kept bumping up. Did hit the board 3 times since and recent form has been good but didn’t win again. Wasn’t used off the gate last time and had a wide trip but rallied to come 3rd. This could be the spot to blast out and race at the top of the stack at a nice price.

    Race 10 (9:45 PM EDT)

1-Blank Stare (3-1)-The Cullipher veteran has hit the board 28 of 59 at YR with 10 pictures. This will be the 2nd start since 10-12, and put in a needed race at M1. Lands in a good spot to get a win if tight enough.
4-Janelle Granny (7/2)-The De Domenico pupil banked over $191k last year but things get a lot tougher for some in their 4-year-old season. Zeron steers, and this is the 1st time driving for this outfit. Drops should fit and it could be wake-up time.
8-Layton Hanover (7/2)-Ships in from PcD, the Alexander trainee likes to win here and has beaten better as recently as last month. This field isn't loaded with early speed and Matt Kakaley could land in a close-up seat. Will respect chances, might be overlooked with the outside draw and has won 11 of 32 starts at Yonkers.

    $2.00 Late Pick 4

    1,2/2/5,6/1,4,8
    Total Bet=$24

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

      Mahoning Valley - Race #1
#1 Destiny's Tot Not sure the price is going to be all that exciting, but I like how she flashed a little pace and hung around when dropping in for the first time. Seems dangerous if she can avoid a tricky trip from the fence.
#2 Kelley Jean Nothing but chase and fade efforts through two tries, but she's meeting a cheaper group here and could get dangerous if she manages to shake off a bit of the other potential pace into the turn.
#4 Quetzaly She has had her share of chances, but a handful of those tries on the page would keep her in the frame today. Not really that enthusiastic about her, but she wouldn't make me fall out of my chair either.
Race Summary Destiny's Tot woke up last out and can be competitive with something similar here -- there isn't a whole lot of finishing punch on paper here, and she stayed on OK last time out.
      Mahoning Valley - Race #3
#5 J. P Indy I don't trust her very much at this point in time, but there are a couple of efforts on her page when she has finished up with a little bit of energy, and that could give her a chance to pick them up late in a race without much of serious late punch. Plugs along to land it?
#1 Smartasset She's another who doesn't inspire a ton of confidence, but she might work out a cozy trip from the inside while a couple quicker players mix it up early. One of the ones.
#3 Josefina She's another who has a decent claim on this with a couple of one-paced efforts on her page that might do the trick against this bunch.
Race Summary #6 Holidays Army Brat has some appeal from the outside, but I'm worried she's prompting from the start at a short price on the drop today.
      Mahoning Valley - Race #9
#1 Cavendish Like the way he figures to sit early against this group with some forward pace and an ability to settle just a bit. Could trip out from here.
#3 Eddie M He should be right up on the pace while getting around two turns here, but there are a couple other potential forward options to keep the tempo honest. Capable.
#8 Crafted He's got pace from the outside and has run well in every route try on his page, so he might be able to set the tempo here and stick around for some of this.
Race Summary Cavendish has some appeal while likely sitting just off the early pace, and I'm hoping the relatively competitive group will keep the price honest enough.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Turf Paradise - Race #3
#1 ROBARANDO (2-1) Stretch drifting cost him first-out victory, steps up a notch in longer sprint.
#6 DUNVEGAN (5-1) Chased fast pace and was no threat in MSW company, worked 5F bullet since.
#5 NO ORDINARY TIGER (4-1) Out-kicked by deep closers in improved try with Lasix for new barn.
Race Summary ROBARANDO ran to heavy bet in his debut, but he drifted out to the 6-path in the stretch, then inward to bother a rival to get disqualified from second. He benefited from a good set-up behind the dueling leaders, but he should graduate if he minds his manners. Bet to win and place and play a 1,6/1, 5, 6/ALL trifecta.
        Turf Paradise - Race #4
#6 THREEBROTHERS (2-1) Made it three wins in a row for these connections, meets talented elders.
#3 CIBERTRUCK (4-1) Posting big numbers for barn that drops him to his level of claim in November.
#8 WAR CHEST (3-1) Overcame traffic jam on final turn for ninth win at this distance.
Race Summary Proven turf veterans IRISH HEATWAVE, CIBERTURCK AND WAR CHEST bring six-figure bankrolls and a combined 24 grass wins to this one-mile starter allowance. But it’s the newest kid on the block, THREEBROTHERS, who could be the one to beat as he seeks four wins in a row early in his 5-year-old season. He was ‘tenacious’ in holding off a bid by the 8-to-5 favorite in the final sixteenth last out. Bet to win and place and play 6-3 and 6-8 exactas.
        Turf Paradise - Race #5
#2 BIYOMBO (7-2) Can turn tables on similar foes if he doesn’t get locked in another suicide duel.
#5 GONZAGA BAY (10-1) Proved versatile two back, beat lesser in latest, gets in light on class hike.
#6 BRANDYN (5-2) Piling up the checks, should get another good set-up.
Race Summary The main contenders reunite from a February 13 race under the same conditions. BIYOMBO had the worst of it, dueling through rapid fractions with next-out winner CHICKEN WING until deep stretch before trip sitters BRANDYN and SILVERBULLETBADGER got up to finish 1-2. New shooter GONZAGA BAY adds to the pace mix, but still like BIYOMBO to bounce back at an inflated price. Bet to win and place and play 2-1, 2-5 and 2-6 exactas.

Will Rogers Downs - Race #3 - Post: 2:09pm - Maiden Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $13,000 Class Rating: 56

              Rating:

              #4 WORK ZONE (ML=3/1)

WORK ZONE - I sense a speed battle developing here. If that happens, this gelding will be in perfect position to reel in the leaders. That last effort must not have been too hard on this gelding for him to be able to race again so quickly. Was in a $15,000 Maiden Claiming race at Sam Houston last time out. That event had a class rating of 67 and he is moving down in this race. A certain contender.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 TOP OF THE WORLD (ML=2/1), #6 DRAW YOUR BOW (ML=5/1), #7 INSTANT KARMA (ML=5/1),

TOP OF THE WORLD - This runner will likely be way back as this field crosses the finish line. DRAW YOUR BOW - I'd like to see more conducive recent efforts with morning line odds of 5/1. INSTANT KARMA - This horse hasn't been close at the finish line recently. 5/1 is not worth it for any horse in a sprint of 5 1/2 furlongs that hasn't finished in the money in a sprint affair lately.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #4 WORK ZONE is going to be the play if we are getting 1/1 or better
              EXACTA WAGERS: None
              TRIFECTA WAGERS: Skip

                Race 4 - Maiden - 250y on the Dirt. Purse: $24000 Class Rating: 65

QUARTER HORSE 250Y, FOR MAIDENS, THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 126 LBS.; OLDER, 128 LBS.
                RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                # 3 FE HOUDINI 3/1
                # 1 VANNYS HONEY WAGON 20/1
                # 8 LA UNA DIVA 6/1
I give the nod to FE HOUDINI here. Looks very good for the conditions of this competition today, showing solid numbers in short races recently. Has to be given a shot based on the competitive speed rating earned in the last contest. VANNYS HONEY WAGON - Demonstrates the look of a profitable play, averaging a solid 65 Equibase Speed Figure which is one of the top in this group of horses. Will most likely come out very strong - I have liked the way this filly has moved rapidly to the front end recently. LA UNA DIVA - Posted a strong speed figure last time out.

                  Turf Paradise - Race #8 - Post: 4:16pm - Optional Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $22,000 Class Rating: 80

                  Rating:

                  #8 BRING A SMILE (ML=6/1)
                  #6 MINEDANDREFINED (ML=4/1)
                  #4 ROCKBAR (ML=6/1)
                  #7 MOONLIGHT TRYST (ML=3/1)
                  #10 STARDUST DREAMS (ML=15/1)

BRING A SMILE - I'm expecting this beautiful animal to run a good race in today's event. MINEDANDREFINED - Silva brings her right back. I advocate you stay with this hot mare. ROCKBAR - The Brain taught me this angle. Watch for horses that show good zip, drop back, then run evenly with a closing kick. Hernandez and Owens partnered together are a handicapper's friend. MOONLIGHT TRYST - Ran last time around the track against a tougher field at Santa Anita. The move down the ladder based on class rating points should suit her well. When Corbett and Evans join forces on horses the win pct has been terrific at 44. This pony coming off a good race in the last month is a serious competitor in my opinion. The most recent speed fig of 76 is the best last race figure in the group. STARDUST DREAMS - Warren has this mare placed in the perfect event.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 BLUE SPIRIT (ML=5/1), #9 LITTLE BIT TIPSY (ML=8/1),

BLUE SPIRIT - Earned a mediocre speed rating last time out in a $30,000 Maiden Optional Claiming race on Feb 24th. Unlikely to see an improved performance off of that fig. LITTLE BIT TIPSY - This filly registered a fig in her last clash which probably isn't good enough in today's race.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Play #8 BRING A SMILE to win if you can get odds of 6/1 or more

                    # 7 SEVEN BRIDGES ROAD 2/1
                    # 5 SHADOWLESS 5/1
NINETY TWO is my choice. I think having Goncalves ride this gelding is a smart choice. Will probably come out strong - I have liked the way this gelding has moved sharply to the lead recently. Looks solid for the conditions of this contest today, showing solid numbers in dirt route races recently. SEVEN BRIDGES ROAD - Has posted sound Equibase Speed Figures in dirt route races in the past. The speed rating of 80 from his last contest looks solid in here. SHADOWLESS - Ran a solid last race. Conditioner has sharp win rate (16 percent) at this distance and surface.
