Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    March 31, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Yonkers Raceway has a 12-race card. The $1.00 Pick 5 starts in Race 5, and it has a $10,000 guaranteed pool. The $2.00 Late Pick 4 rolls in Race 9, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 9 (9:25 PM EDT)

5-Why Not Now (5/2)-Comes off a solid gate to wire score last week in the 2nd start since 11-4. Has won 2 of 4 at Yonkers and Matt Kakaley should be out and rolling from the word go. Should be on top or in the pocket behind #1-Typhoon Banner, and is a strong double up possibility.
8-Miki Shan N (3-1)-The NZ bred faces tougher but has won both Stateside starts at YR. Made it look easy leaving from post 6 going gate to wire at 1/5 last week. Jason Bartlett will have the pedal down. The trip will tell the story but will respect and use at a fair price.

    Race 10 (9:45 PM EDT)

3-Santanna Hanover (5-1)-Came off the bench and put in 2 starts against tough competition. Should be much tighter in the 3rd race since 11-27. Joe B can provide an aggressive steer and could be overlooked at the windows.
8-Always A Thrill (5/2)-Has won 4 straight and could get a close up seat as Jason Bartlett won't be bashful. The Bartlett-DeVita combo has stayed hot, posting 35% winners.

    Race 11 (10:05 PM EDT)

1-Brake Ahead (4-1)-Drops and my take is George Brennan will protect the rail. Racing on the point or the 2-hole makes the 5-year-old a player at this level and should offer a fair price.
3-Casino Action N (5-1)-This could be a wake-up call opportunity for the Bucci trainee who will have the services of Bartlett for this contest. That duo is posting 30% winners, and the camera shy veteran comes back in sequence. Can be rolling off cover and there should be an honest pace.

    Race 12 (10:25 PM EDT)

1-Vici (5/2)-Bumps up after getting caught late. Willing to use anyway from this post as all of this crew is moving up. Went off at 2/5 in last and won't be that price here. Joe B drives his own and should be there at the wire.
4-Escape To America (4-1)Pocono shipper cashed checks versus better at YR in December. Has only 1 win 12 races at Yonkers and has been facing better this year. Likes to stalk, and ANap can work that type of trip and could be in the mix at a square price.

    $2.00 Late Pick 4

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Will Rogers Downs - Race #3
#1 Bar Room Buddy He goes second off the bench today after what feels like a useful comeback run, and he might be in a good spot to stay close inside and tip out for a shot at a couple slightly quicker players.
#6 Devious Lover Not totally sure what to make of him, but he's a fresh face with an appealing enough worktab on paper. Check him out ahead of this.
#3 As One Does Not sure what to do here -- there are a lot of dull running lines on the page, and he's only run twice in the last 18 months or so. Could win this while trying a local crew, but I'm not that enthusiastic about taking a likely short price off a flat run on the drop last out.
Race Summary Bar Room Buddy has the positional pace to find a good spot and he may hug the fence and stay unbothered while the rest sort things out.
Will Rogers Downs - Race #4
#1 Auto Dial He obviously isn't what he once was -- he almost graduated in special weight company at Fair Grounds last year -- but I liked his comeback run there and assume there is a bit of upside in the second start off the long break. Worth a look on the rise.
#5 Elusive Power Speed isn't meeting a ton of other serious pace, so there's a chance he's gone early in this spot, but he doesn't always stay on with a whole lot of enthusiasm. Short price.
#6 Bobwhite Bobby He's got some outside tracking speed that at least gives him the kind of trip that could win this, but I think the one drawn inside of him is the better of the forward players.
Race Summary Auto Dial might get a bit overlooked in here on class, but he's generally held some good form and might not be quite as cheap as his recent form looks on paper.
Will Rogers Downs - Race #7
#5 Rebelena I like how reliable she was while working to graduate, and she punched home nicely toward the end of the Remington season. This looks like a really good spot for her to come back.
#7 Penny Powers She's a threat on the drop after trying stakes company last out, but I'm a bit worried about the way she gives away ground in almost all of her races. Vulnerable but in the mix.
#9 Raspberry Martini She drops out of the same spot as the one ahead of her, and she has some good pace to use from the outside. Wouldn't surprise.
Race Summary Rebelena has been an honest type, and she took a nice step forward to land her first win last out. Think she's one of the ones while trying winners for the first time.
      Mahoning Valley - Race #3
#1 Daisy Jones Think she's going to hit hard from the fence here -- she has some solid pace in a spot without any other serious front-end players. Should be gone on the drop.
#3 Athena's Ghost She can find a decent spot tracking the top choice's pace, and she has proven a good fit with this kind of company in those last two. Chance.
#5 Perfect Hour Her debut here wasn't terrible, and I wonder if she's capable of something better while getting back in for a tag today. Price for a piece?
Race Summary Daisy Jones should be able to control the tempo from the start with this group, and she should be tighter with that comeback race under her belt.
      Mahoning Valley - Race #7
#2 Flame For Real Think this is a top-heavy race between her and the next one, but the price might be a tiny touch better here, and I could see her winning a late battle against that one.
#3 Amy's Star She's a real danger with some pace on her page, and she stacked up nicely with the top choice in that last one. These two will likely settle the scores on the tote and the track.
#5 Praise N Glory There are a couple tries in her past that would stack up OK with the top two, I just think they're a little bit more reliable and likely to bring their best stuff today.
Race Summary Flame For Real and Amy's Star look like the right ones in here, and they could put on a fun show with similar styles and competitive running lines in a small field.
      Mahoning Valley - Race #8
#7 Ashlee's Ring Pressing type might be able to turn her one-paced forward ability into a score here while drawn outside of some quicker players early. An even prompting effort might do the trick.
#1 Banana Pudding Honest finisher has not run a bad one all season, and her better stuff would make her a threat to land yet another one here at the meet. The one to beat.
#4 Oopsie Doopsie Tactical riser is probably too cheap to win this, but she doesn't feel totally out of the question either. The recent form against softer is pretty solid, and now is the right time to try this kind of local level.
Race Summary Ashlee's Ring has some appeal from the outside, and I think something like her last couple of trips might put her in a spot to get over the top.

          Parx Racing - Race #3 - Post: 1:34pm - Claiming - 8.3 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $21,000 Class Rating: 63

          Rating:

          #3 LADY ROBO (ML=9/2)

LADY ROBO - A big drop down in class rating points from her March 13th race at Penn National. Based on that data point, I will give this horse the advantage. A thoroughbred coming back this rapidly after a solid race is a good signal.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 CALLIE RAE (ML=3/1), #5 JAYCE AND LIAM (ML=7/2), #7 SPANISH GIRL (ML=4/1),

CALLIE RAE - March 3rd is the last time we've seen this filly around. Have to be a little bit leery. Could be tough for this animal to beat this group off of that last speed rating. Not likely to improve enough to run a figure anywhere near today's class rating, so put her on the possibly overvalued contestants list. JAYCE AND LIAM - Couldn't make up ground at all on Mar 3rd. Hard to invest in this time at the expected odds. SPANISH GIRL - Will probably be left with too much to do down the homestretch. If you keep choosing these sort of 'bridesmaid' types, you're going to be dissatisfied frequently. Disappointing rating last time around the track at Parx Racing at 1 mile 70 yards. Don't believe this steed will improve too much in today's event.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - LADY ROBO - At Penn National on Mar 13th this mare posted a speed figure of 59 in her last race. She has the greatest last figure in the field.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #3 LADY ROBO is going to be the play if we are getting 1/1 or better
          EXACTA WAGERS: 3 with 2

My selection for this event is CONSTITUTIONALIST. Could provide positive dividends based on respectable recent Equibase Speed Figures with an average of 64. Had one of the most respectable Equibase Speed Figures of this group in her last competition. Has run well when running a dirt sprint race. GIRL BYE - This animal is at the top in this group in earnings per start at the distance/surface. Have to consider solely on class, with some of the most respectable class numbers of this group. BIG JAVA - Has to be given consideration versus this field displaying strong figs recently and an average speed rating of 53 under similar conditions. Trainers don't bring horses back this soon without a good reason.

WINTER FALCON could be the wager in here. Has strong Equibase speed figs and has to be considered for a wager here. The average Equibase class rating of 80 makes this one difficult to beat. With a solid 87 average Equibase Speed Fig at the distance, seems well suited for today's contest. MOJAVE - This horse has been constatntly running well recently. His 80 average has this gelding with among the best speed figures here. EDDIE CROSSWIRE - The speed figure of 89 from his latest contest looks decent in here.

                  Turf Paradise - Race #7 - Post: 3:47pm - Claiming - 5.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $14,500 Class Rating: 80

                  Rating:

                  #7 MUSICAL DIVA (ML=6/1)
                  #4 MINEDANDREFINED (ML=3/1)
                  #5 BANGO'S HEAT (ML=6/1)
                  #10 SOLID TUNE (ML=5/1)

MUSICAL DIVA - This is a classic 'Lone Front-runner' scenario. If Lopez gets him out of the gate cleanly it'll likely be smooth sailing. I like this filly. Has the highest earnings per start in this contest. Based on this filly's recent efforts, she should benefit from this contest's shorter distance. MINEDANDREFINED - Silva brings this mare back into a race rather than a workout. He knows his mare is on top of her game. BANGO'S HEAT - Have to give this mare a good shot. Ran a nice contest in the last race within the last month. This mare's last speed figure is good enough to win here, I'll bet on her back again this time. SOLID TUNE - You always have to be on the lookout for money generating jock/trainer combos; we have an instance right here. Dropping down in Equibase class figure points from her Mar 15th race at Santa Anita. Based on that info, I will give this thoroughbred the edge. Dropping 5 pounds from last race. Could be a deciding factor today.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #2 STANFORD HOLIDAY (ML=4/1), #9 LUSMA (ML=9/2), #6 KAMIKAZE BLUE (ML=8/1),

STANFORD HOLIDAY - Nice race on March 6th at Turf Paradise, but the fact that there are no workouts since has to make one a little worried. Doubtful that the speed figure she notched on March 6th will be good enough in this event. LUSMA - That was just not a very good display in the last race. KAMIKAZE BLUE - Difficult to keep chasing this kind of 'bridesmaid' horse. When scrutinizing today's class rating, she will have to earn a much better speed fig than in the last race to compete in this dirt sprint.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Put your money on #7 MUSICAL DIVA on the nose if you can get odds of 7/2 or more

PULL THROUGH will not be denied the top prize here. Many expert selectors know speed is is such an important factor. This contender has credentials with a 74 avg number. Heads into this contest with really strong TrackMaster class ratings relative to the field - take a good look. Should be considered in this one if only for the respectable speed rating recorded in the most recent contest. WE THE FEMALE - Achieved a 72 TrackMaster speed fig in last race. A duplicate effort here should get the victory in this event. This standardbred will have to be a wager, based on the really good driver/trainer win percent. LADY CHRISLYN - Composite pace ratings show this solid standardbred has what it takes to take the whole enchilada this time. Looks like a strong pick in this field of horses and her above average winning percentage says she has the ability to dominate this time.

HELP DUST is the clear stand out wager in the eyes of the brain trust. Seems to have a good class edge based on the horses he has faced. More wins than is normal have been earned by interesting entrants lining up behind the 1 position at Saratoga Harness. BOLD CREATION - Should compete quite well in this race as his style of running fits well in this group of horses. Racing competitively, achieved a clear-cut speed figure in his last race (68). NOTOUTOFTHEWOODS - This gathering may be controlled by this mare. A single look at the average TrackMaster Speed Rating will confirm that. Enters this race with respectable TrackMaster class markings in relationship to the group - worth a look.
