(2) Solo Flight has four top three finishes from nine starts racing in open company and against NY-breds. (9) Henry’s Hope gets first-time Lasix and blinkers on as he takes a drop down in class and was third in his debut in November for a $50,000 tag.

2nd race [OC 62K/N2X, 7F] – (4) Bramito ran the best race of his career when he rallied to win an optional-claiming starter allowance and was taken for $32,000. (6) General Partner is the horse to beat. He was second in the Champagne (G1) and set the pace in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. After seven-months off, he won an allowance at Saratoga in June by five-lengths with a triple-digit Beyer Speed Figure. He will make another come back after 10 months. (1) Gun It was claimed for $32,000 after running third at a mile. He moves back to seven-furlongs which is his preferred distance. (2) Toxic Gray has plenty of early speed that makes him a contender.

3rd race [NY, Md 30000, 6 ? F] – (5) Nine N Four (A) had lots of trouble in his last race getting bumped twice to get off to a slow start, got back heels clipped and still managed to finish third. (2) Magic Beach set the pace and finished second last time out. (8) Man From Malta was on the lead and was third in a January start for $40,000 and then came back in a week against open company. (9) I Can See That made his second start a year ago and finished second and that was after a year off for $45,000 against open company. Now, he is back after another year off.

4th race [Clm 10000, 1 mi] – (10) Allure of Money went to the lead in his last two starts and won a $10,000 claimer and was taken. The new trainer moved him up to $20,000 where he faded at the end. (3) Valenzan Day is back in the Linda Rice barn for the fourth time. She claimed him back most recently for $16,000 and then tried a starter allowance. He won four races in a row last year. (1) Cumberland Blues was claimed for $12,500 when he was a winner in November. Recent races were against much tougher competition. (9) Empty Tomb won for $20,000 at Saratoga.

5th race [NY, Md Sp Wt, 1 mi] – (9) Dear Chairman has finished three times in the top three at this level. (10) Palace Boss also has good finishes in similar spots and moves back to state-bred competition after trying open company. (1) Dr. Barry was third in her first start of the year going a mile. (6) Coco Sun was second in his first race which was at Charles Town in February and now moves to a New York trainer to face state-breds.

6th race [Clm 16000B, 1 mi] – (3) Active Duty (D) was claimed two races back by a low-profile trainer who has a very high win percentage of 56% and came back to finish fourth after racing four-wide and got bet down from 6-1 to 3-1. (4) Prove Worthy makes a big drop in class with a few past top three finishes at the $25,000 level. (6) Winter’s Ghost finished second or third in his last four starts most recently at this level in January. (10) Quiet Wisdom tries open company for the first time as he drops out of second-level allowances and is in for a tag for the first time.

7th race [Distaff (G3), 7F] – (1) Irish Maxima won 5 out of 6 starts with three stakes victories with the last two at Laurel and Parx. (4) St. Benedict’s Prep finished in the top three in 10 out of 11 starts with four wins. His last four races were in stakes at Aqueduct and Laurel. (5) Socially Selective had a third and second in stakes races this winter at Gulfstream and then Aqueduct. (6) Royal Spa is another one that has been racing well in stakes this winter.

8th race [NY, Alw 76000 N1X, 7F] – (6) Crimson Light (A) comes back after a 15-month layoff for Todd Pletcher when he won his only start rallying from far back to win by a head at Aqueduct. At the start, he walked out of the gate, bucked and kicked, and went eight-wide. (10) Noonzio had a pair of seconds at this level during the winter. (8) Saint Gaudens had an improved third in his second race since a layoff for Chad Brown. (4) Leo’s Reward was a maiden winner in his fourth try for David Donk.

9th race [Gazelle (G3), 1 1/8 mi] – (2) Ballerina d’Oro finds an easier spot here. She was much closer to the pace when she finished third in the Davona Dale (G2) and earned the highest speed figure in the field when she was second in the Demoiselle (G3) going the nine-furlong distance. Those two starts came after her first three races were on the turf. Dylan Davis is back in the saddle. (3) Vanilla Sundae broke her maiden by almost 16-lengths in February for Todd Pletcher and Repole Stable. (4) Early On was second in the Virginia Oaks in her first start on the road to the Kentucky Oaks. (7) Pure Beauty has the looks of a late-developing runner for Shug McGaughey. She broke her maiden at Gulfstream in January and then ran a strong third in an allowance.

10th race [Carter Handicap (G2), 7F] – (2) Quint’s Brew got a triple-digit Beyer Speed Figure when he won the General George at Laurel by five-lengths. (4) Full Moon Madness won the Tom Fool (G3) at Aqueduct in March after hitting the board in his last six starts with three wins. (7) Maximus Meridius won twice in Aqueduct winter stakes as part of five races where he was first or second. (3) Surveillance has four second-place finishes in a row as an 8-year-old for Linda Rice.

11th race [The Excelsior, 1 ? mi] – (3) Batten Down who won the Ohio Derby (G3) last year and was second in the Jim Dandy (G2). He was fourth in his 2025 debut against a strong field in the Mineshaft (G3) at Fair Grounds. (1) Film Star won a stakes at Laurel in December for Linda Rice and was a stakes winner at Saratoga this past summer. (6) Phileas Fogg won three out of his last four races including the Queens County at Aqueduct. (8) Masmak has four wins from his six most recent races.

12th race [Wood Memorial (G2), 1 1/8 mi] – The Wood Memorial (G2) drew a field of twelve 3-year-olds including seven horses that already have some Kentucky Derby points. They will vie for a purse of $750,000 and a share of the qualifying points of 100-50-25-15-10 which go to the top five finishers. (2) Captain Cook won both of his starts since moving to the barn of Rick Dutrow with a nine-length maiden score at Aqueduct and a Derby trail victory in the Withers. Dutrow skipped the Gotham with a preference to go nine furlongs again. (6) Hill Road began his career racing in Ireland and then moved to Chad Brown’s care after coming over to America to run third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile after breaking slowly. In his only race of the year, he was third in the Tampa Derby (G3). (1) Rodriguez ships east for Bob Baffert after running third in the San Felipe (G2) and second in the Robert B. Lewis (G3) on the Derby trail. (12) Omaha Omaha made three starts on the Derby trail with a second in the Jerome, third in the Withers, and third in the Virginia Derby.

13th race [NY, OC 45k/N2X, 7F] – (10) Sohana will make her 2025 debut for Brad Cox with a record of 7: 2-3-1. Her only off the board finish was a try on the turf. She had a pair of top three finishes in NY Stallion Series stakes. (9) Fast and Frisky won the first-level allowance for state-breds and then was third twice at the next level. (3) Dolomite was third in the Demoiselle (G3) in 2023, second in a NY-bred stakes race last year, and second twice at this level. (5) Ariana Rye was a front-end winner of the first-level allowance last month.

The $750,000 Wood Memorial (G2), Aqueduct

Race 12The Wood Memorial (G2) drew a field of twelve 3-year-olds including a pair of unbeaten horses that will vie for a purse of $750,000 and a share of the Kentucky Derby qualifying points of 100-50-25-15-10 to the top five finishers. Keeneland Select Derby Prep - Santa Anita Derby | April 5, 2025

        Apr. 04, 2025

By Matt Shifman and Bob Ehalt

The $500,000 Santa Anita Derby (G1), 1 1/8 miles, Santa Anita

Race 10 – The Santa Anita Derby (G1) drew a field of only five 3-year-olds and that means that the Kentucky Derby qualifying points were reduced by 25% to 75-37.5-17.75-11.25-7.5 to the top five finishers. (1) Journalism comes to the Santa Anita Derby with three wins in a row in a maiden at Del Mar in November and then moved onto the Kentucky Derby trail in the Los Alamitos Futurity (G2) and the San Felipe (G2) at Santa Anita. The March victory was speedy and earned a 108 Beyer Speed Figure that tops the 3-year-old division. (2) Citizen Bull was named the champion 2-year-old after a pair of Grade 1 wins in the American Pharaoh and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. He continued to get better in his only start in 2025 when he won the Robert B. Lewis (G3). (4) Barnes won his first two races in a maiden at Churchill Downs and then in the San Vicente (G2). He had the lead in the San Felipe before getting passed by Journalism. (5) Baeza was an impressive maiden winner in his third start going a mile at Santa Anita in February. Betting strategy: Exacta box: 1, 2. Trifecta: 1 with 2 with 4, 5.

COMMENTS: BALLERINA DORO just needs to rerun her lone Aqueduct trip to take the title here. VANILLA SUNDAE won her last by 15 lengths with better race internals from start to finish. EARLY ON ran faster fractions despite going a little longer today. PURE BEAUTY is another that ran some better fractions in a longer race.

COMMENTS: FULL MOON MADNESS upped his speed figure in the last four races with the top last race speed figure. MAXIMUS MERIDIUS is just a neck away from winning four of the last five races. QUINTS BREW has four big wins and a third in five races but faces much tougher today. SURVEILLANCE is coming off a career best race and could be in store for a little regression.

COMMENTS: MASMAK has four wins and a second in five Aqueduct races. PHILEAS FOGG should be forward and that is where jockey Kendrick Carmouche wants to be. CRUPI has explosive late speed at times and makes the classic third start after a layoff. BATTEN DOWN has some strong workouts getting ready for today.

OMAHA OMAHA is a longshot we will give a chance as he has lifted his speed figure in six straight races. RODRIGUEZ ships in from California for trainer Bob Baffert.

COMMENTS: TENMA won four of five career races with a third with excuses. LOOK FORWARD does her best work when near the lead and that is where she should be. NO BAD BEATS won two in a row with ease and had much better early speed. SILENT LAW has his best workouts getting ready for today.

AMERICAS MARK makes the third start after a layoff and turns back to dirt after running on turf in the last two. KNIGHTWITHLOUIS increased her speed figure in the last three races with two consecutive wins. OM N JOY could improve markedly in the second up.

              #7

Handicapped by The Turf Club Analysts

Aqueduct - Race #12 - Post: 6:10pm - Stakes - 9.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $750,000 Class Rating: 103 Wood Memorial S. Presented by Resorts World Casino (Grade 2)

              Rating:

              #5 SAND DEVIL (ML=8/1)
              #1 RODRIGUEZ (ML=5/2)
              #2 CAPTAIN COOK (ML=7/2)

SAND DEVIL - This colt's last speed fig is strong enough to win here, I'll wager on him right back this time out. RODRIGUEZ - I definitely see positive things for this thoroughbred right here. CAPTAIN COOK - That recent bullet 48.2 work shows that this colt is ready for a top effort today. A win percent the likes of what Franco and Dutrow have achieved together is fantastic. He has the topmost earnings per race. Take a long look at this horse.

              Vulnerable Contenders: #6 HILL ROAD (ML=9/2), #7 GRANDE (ML=5/1),

HILL ROAD - When examining today's class rating, he will have to register a much better speed rating than in the last race to compete in this dirt route. GRANDE - Quite unimpressive speed figure last race out at Gulfstream Park at 1 1/8 miles. Don't believe this entrant will improve too much in today's race.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #5 SAND DEVIL is the play if we get odds of 3/1 or better
EXACTA WAGERS: Box [1,5] Box [2,5]
TRIFECTA WAGERS: Box [1,2,5] Total Cost: $6

                    # 2 CRAZY ANITA 9/2
                    # 6 COAL COUNTRY 6/5
                    # 3 CRAFTY CANDYGRAM 4/1
CRAZY ANITA looks to be the bet in here. Will most likely go to the front end and might never look back. Is a solid choice - given the 62 Equibase Speed Fig from her most recent race. Has performed soundly as of late in sprint races, posting a nifty 51 avg Equibase Speed Figure. COAL COUNTRY - Should best this group of animals here, showing respectable figures of late. Well above average win clip at this distance/surface. CRAFTY CANDYGRAM - Is worth thinking about and may be a bet - strong Equibase Speed Figures (56 average) at today's distance and surface lately. The price could be just right on this entrant.

                      Gulfstream Park - Race #10 - Post: 5:50pm - Maiden Special - 8.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $43,000 Class Rating: 82

                      Rating:

                      #5 FOLKTALE (ML=8/1)
                      #11 OUR SOUPER HERO (ML=7/2)
                      #8 WEAREBACKYOUNGMAN (ML=9/2)

FOLKTALE - Gelding ran well at big odds when he made his bow March 15th. This gelding has the top turf fig in his last race. It doesn't take a college grad like The Brain to figure this here horse has a good chance. Sisterson drops him down to this class. You don't need too much more handicapping info to think this thoroughbred should be one of the top contenders at this level. OUR SOUPER HERO - A repeat of that latest effort on Mar 7th where he notched a speed fig of 83 looks lofty enough to score in this race. I expect a lot from this horse. His Equibase speed figs under similar conditions are tops in this field. This gelding is in nice condition, having run a nice race on Mar 7th, finishing second. Came home in fast time last race out. A positive sign. This horse earns a lot of dough per start. Tops in this clash. WEAREBACKYOUNGMAN - When I handicap a grass race, I think sometimes class ratings are more important than speed figs. This horse has the highest average class in the entire group. Have to give this gelding a shot. Ran a solid race in the last race within the last thirty days. The addition of the 'hood' usually means that a trainer wants a horse to show more early speed or to keep his attention focused.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #3 SINGLEMINDED (ML=3/1), #2 DRACULA (ML=8/1), #4 JUST RELAX (ML=8/1),

SINGLEMINDED - Would have to get quite a bit more than the M/L odds of 3/1 to wager on this animal. DRACULA - The fifth place finish position in the last race was not that great. Speed kills. Plenty of early speed in this affair compromises this animal's hopes. When checking today's class rating, he will have to garner a much better speed rating than last time around the track to battle in this turf route. JUST RELAX - It appears like too much zip is on board in this event. This front-runner will likely get baked on the front end.

If you want a competitive play in this contest, feast your eyes on PONDA JET. Worth looking at here based on the statistics in the TrackMaster SR department alone. With a 95 average class rating, this solid standardbred has one of the strongest class advantages in the group of animals. Achieved a 101 TrackMaster Speed Rating last time out. A duplicate outing here should get the trip to the winner's circle for this one. FLAGMAN - He's performing in fine form, recording very promising speed ratings. An excellent selection. With a competitive 102 TrackMaster speed fig last time out, will positively be a factor in this contest. DRINK UP DRINK UP - Could definitely better this field of starters given the 101 speed rating earned in his last contest. Sometimes you just have to go with a feeling, think about this one's chances.

If you want a very nice play in this event, feast your eyes on KANKOON. Cannot put a finger on it, but think about this filly for a wager. Overall rankings appear very nice. Can't throw out at this point. That 53 TrackMaster speed fig clocked in the most recent affair puts this race horse in the mix in this one. WILMA FINGERDO - This fine animal looks very good. Take a good look at the 55 avg speed fig. Loved this filly's last race. Ran a big 51 TrackMaster Speed Rating. Major contender. SHEZ GOT TRIX - Feel the need for speed, this race horse has been turning in some outstanding TrackMaster Speed Ratings averaging around 56. Battling strongly, earned a huge speed rating in her last outing (58).
