Scott Shapiro: Gulfstream $4.5M-Est Mandatory Payout Rainbow 6

    April 13, 2025 | By 1/ST BET

After a nice two-day carryover at Keeneland on Friday, it is time for a massive one this afternoon in Hallandale Beach where there is a mandatory payout in the Rainbow 6. With $558,781 in carryover money, track officials are expecting the sequence that starts in Race 5 to reach $4.5M. Here is how I am attacking it.

Grade Descriptions: Grade A=Highest degree of confidence; Grade B=Solid Play. Grade C=Least preferred or pass; Grade X=probable winner but likely at odds too short to play.

    Race 5:
    Grade: C+
Main Ticket: 6 Mamuka; 5 Carnane
Backups: 9 Its Satisfactual; 1 Seekingbythestorm

Forecast: A challenging beaten claimer at two-turns on the sod kicks things off where I will opt to get some coverage. #6 Mamuka could find herself loose on the lead dropping in class for Jose Garoffalo. She gets back to the surface she earned her maiden victory over. #5 Carnane also makes a lot of sense. The Caravaggio filly was claimed by trainer Carlos Narvaez in late January and rewarded her high-percentage trainer right away with a win over the all-weather in early March. She is more than capable of winning right back. I will also use a couple as backups that have lacked the will to win, but could find their friends here.

    Race 6:
    Grade: C+
Main Ticket: 5 Oh Margot; 1 Reputation; 2 Tater Tot
    Backups: None

Forecast: This MSW event for 3YO fillies going 6-furlongs over the main track is not much easier than the first leg. #1 Reputation is the 9-5-ML favorite. She ran into a buzzsaw in Rojo Rita on debut back in November and then was caught wide in a two-turn turf race during the Championship meet. This is the softest field she has encountered thus far. Of those with experience, she stands out, but I will also include a pair of first-time starters that could offer a bit of separation from the public.

    Race 7:
    Grade: B
    Main Ticket: 1 Thought
    Backups: None

Forecast: One of my stands comes in this open $12,500 claimer where #1 Thought takes a big drop in class for trainer Fernando Abreu after trying $50k claimers on March 9. The 8-time winner got off to a slow start that day and was caught wide on the backstretch before tiring in the end. With the lack of speed in here, jockey Miguel Vasquez should find a favorable forward position early and get the best of this group in the lane.

    Race 8:
    Grade: B-
Main Ticket: 9 Make Haste; 1 May Mischief
    Backups: None

Forecast: #9 Make Haste is the understandable 2-1-choice on oddsmaker Brian Nadeau’s morning line after a challenging voyage along the inside in her Stateside debut on March 23. The Blue Point filly moves to an outside post, gets some class relief, and should move forward after shaking off the rust late last month. She is my top choice, but I like the upside as well of #1 May Mischief. The Maximus Mischief filly was dominant in her debut wire-to-wire win over the all-weather on March 5. She moves into the Saffie Joseph Jr. barn and could be dangerous on the surface switch.

    Race 9:
    Grade: B-
Main Ticket: 3 North End Lady; 6 Tape Runner
    Backups: None

Forecast: I am not creative in this first-level allowance at 9-furlongs over the all-weather where I give the slight edge to 7-2-second choice #3 North End Lady over morning line favorite #6 Tape Runner. North End Lady shook off the rust last out in a similar spot where she was headstrong after not having raced since last September. She still managed a third-place effort at 10-1. Expect a move forward here for trainer David Fawkes. Tape Runner returns off the layoff for Victor Barboza Jr. Barboza is a strong 9 for his last 41 with a $1.93 ROI with runners making their first start in synthetic routes off a 60 to 180-day break. In other words, he is quite capable of having them ready to get the trip first off the layoff.

    Race 10:
    Grade: B
    Main Ticket: 2 Wonderland
    Backups: None

Forecast: I am hoping to get to the finale live to #2 Wonderland. The D J Stable filly makes her second start off the layoff after a prep going 5-furlongs over this turf course last month. The Mark Casse trainee disappointed in two starts going a route on the lawn as a two-year-old, but showed some ability and took quite a bit of live support against better competition than she encounters this afternoon. Hopefully we get a quality ground saving trip from her inside draw with veteran Joe Bravo jumping aboard for the first time.

Jeremy Plonk: Keeneland Late Pick 4 Hit & Split Analysis | 4/

      April 13, 2025 | By Jeremy Plonk

With 2 Million 1/ST Rewards Points available in Sunday’s Hit & Split promo for Keeneland, 1/ST BET and Xpressbet players have extra incentive for today’s late pick four.

      Race 6

Turf route maiden special weight races like this historically are magnets for decent prices, including a 14-1 winner Saturday in a similar spot. Big emphasis to the Gulfstream Park alumni in these races, so the lean goes to #10 Executive and #2 Thirteen Colonies off GP preps. Mix in #3 Lebowski and #12 Brushfire in a competitive race.

      Race 7

Impel is a short-priced favorite at 9-5 on the morning line and certainly appreciate her 3-year-old campaign that saw her third in the Grade 1 Ashland locally. But she’s never faced older rivals and could find a difficult trip in a big field from the rail when she’s primarily routed. I’ll try to beat her. #10 Easy Red gets a red-hot Luis Saez (5 wins between Friday-Saturday) and has been rock-solid against elder allowance runners this winter at Fair Grounds. She’s by strong Keeneland dirt sire Omaha Beach, so 10-1 morning line is highly attractive. #5 Into Champagne has plenty of class and got a good run into her in the Hurricane Bertie for this second-off-the-layoff bid.

      Race 8 | Grade 3 Giant’s Causeway Stakes

#4 Future Is Now is a deserving 9-5 morning line favorite and superior turf sprint mare. She’s drawn beautifully and won the Fall Meet’s equivalent race, the Franklin Stakes, over this course. The only concern is that all 14 races of her career came in the same form cycle, she’s never had a layoff. But she won her debut off of strictly training and this stakes has been won by fillies/mares making their seasonal return efforts each of the last 3 years. Chief rival #7 Pandora’s Gift comes off the same break and gets both a trainer and rider upgrade in her bid to turn the tables. Still prefer Future Is Now.

      Race 9

#10 Storm the Streets can cap a big week for trainer Ian Wilkes and jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. That duo teamed to win Tuesday’s Grade 1 Blue Grass with Burnham Square, while Hernandez added Saturday’s Grade 1 Apple Blossom on the road at Oaklawn with the Kenny McPeek-trained Thorpedo Anna. First-timers #4 Bourbon Street Boy and #12 Parade of Fears merit consideration, while #8 Big Salt Lick ran decently over this track in the Fall vs. tougher and fits. I’ll stand against the morning line favorite #2 Romantic Lead for a Jimmy Toner barn not noted for layoff types like this and on a massive class drop.

      The Ticket

      10,2,3,12 with 10,5 with 4 with 10,4,12,8 = $16 for 50 cents

Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

        April 13, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

Northfield Park has a 15-race card with the $1.00 Late Pick 4 starting in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool with a 14% takeout, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on fast track.

        Race 11 (9:40 PM EDT)

4-Pocket The Cash N (5/2)-Rolled the back half in 55.3 versus Open Handicap company but couldn't catch the winner. Went gate to wire the last time in against this kind on 3-2 with Chris Lems at the controls. Left from post 3 that night and was bet down to even money. Will look for a similar trip this time with the same result.

        Race 12 (10:02 PM EDT)

4-Villiam (8-1)-Team Chindano entry was racing with Open company at BR and could be overlooked here. Assuming the connections don't have an issue with the turns. Will look for an aggressive steer and will try to play catch me if you can in its Nfld debut.
7-Night Shadow (5/2)-Ronnie Wrenn had the pedal down and there was no holding back. Landed on the point and went to the half in .55 and hit the 3/4's at 123.3. The pace took its toll down the lane and faded to come 3rd. My feeling is there is early speed inside so the pace could be hot, if so the veteran could come off cover and finish best of all.

        Race 13 (10:22 PM EDT)

2-Fred's Nightmare (5-1)-Raced evenly against this kind and comes right back at the same level but draws inside. The veteran can leave in a hurry and has a pilot in Joe Chindano that likes to leave with the pedal down. Best to not overlook, could get the jump off the gate and be tough to tackle.
9-One Last Laugh (2-1)-This is a check casher who at this point in his career is camera shy. Raced evenly when facing Open Handicap company, dropped last week and took the long way around to come 3rd. Drops again and should be a main player with a sharp steer from Lems.

        Race 14 (10:46 PM EDT)

2-Don't Take My Keys (7/2)-Ships back from MVR and had a troubled trip in last and lost all chance with 2 breaks. Will toss that race, returns to its favorite track and lands in a nice spot to take a picture. Cashed checks versus better when last here and should be put in play when the wings fold.
4-Cornstar (4-1)-Raced big against Open Handicap company in the 1st start since 11-21. Faded down the lane to finish 2nd and now drops. The Cox barn wins at a 22% clip with trotters. This looks like a player and could be bet down.
8-Rose Run Zoom (5/2)MVR shipper has done well at Nfld (6-1-2-1). Should be a threat but has been idle since 3-26 and that's the one cause for pause. Starting from the 8-hole will make it a challenge but doesn't have to lead every step of the way to win.

        $2.00 Late Pick 4

        4/4,7/2,9/2,4,8
        Total Bet=$24

          Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

Tampa Bay Downs - Race #1
#7 FINAL DRAMA (2-1) Took serious money in useful debut, should pop on the class drop.
#9 REBEL JOKE (10-1) Bumped off balance early in well-bet return, gets pace to rally into.
#1 PAEZ (3-1) Chased 2-1 winner and 3-1 debut runner-up, held well for third two back at Tampa.
Race Summary FINAL DRAMA ‘needed more’ in his first start when chasing the winning favorite. He gets class relief and is working well after seven weeks away. Bet to win and place and play 7-1 and 7-9 exactas.
Tampa Bay Downs - Race #2
#2 SECRET EMPIRE (5-2) Can maximize his speed at level and distance which he conquered.
#4 WHISKEY OR WINE (12-1) In good form going a route of ground, steps up off the claim.
#6 KHOOLZAN (7-2) Rallied for minor awards twice at 7F, changes riders off the re-claim.
Race Summary SECRET EMPIRE chased a fast allowance pace while 3-wide but couldn’t keep up with the wire-to-wire winner or the deep closers who finished in the money. He should be the target today at his maiden-breaking level. Bet to win and place and play 2-4 and 2-6 exactas.
Tampa Bay Downs - Race #7
#6 BOMB CYCLONE (6-1) Proven at this level and distance, price goes up after troubled journey.
#9 MAGIC HEART (6-1) Closed late while 3-wide in higher tagged route, has two wins on Tampa lawn.
#1 CAROOM (3-1) Angled out ‘abruptly’ to 9-path for stretch drive, fourth as fave on the class drop.
Race Summary BOMB CYCLONE has two wins and a second in his last five grass routes at this level. He was caught in tight as the beaten favorite three back, then bumped at the start from post 10 and unable to recover last out. He at least offers better value for a win and place bet today.
          Hawthorne - Race #2
#7 ROSE’S WISH (6-1) Good recent form, could take some catching in first long-distance test.
#4 CHEVAL B (4-1) Plenty of route experience on turf, encouraging work on Hawthorne dirt.
#5 CODE OF CONDUCT (6-1) Took money in debut, rallied wide from far back to finish second.
Race Summary Seven entrants unite from various venues, none having run at 1-1/16 miles yet. ROSE’S WISH was ‘prominently placed’ at 5-1/2F behind the wire-to-wire winner and determined runner-up in MSW company at Mahoning Valley. She finished second in two 6F sprints to start the year and could be the target today. Bet to win and place and play 7-4 and 7-5 exactas.
          Hawthorne - Race #3
#7 HOLDEN MICHAEL (6-1) Met better in latest at one mile, wears blinkers, good value play.
#2 BERKUS (3-1) Improved speed despite ‘veered’ start off Rivelli claim, wears hood today.
#6 RAGNOW (4-1) Wide trip in comeback sprint, has good route race to summon.
Race Summary HOLDEN MICHAEL tracked the two heavy favorites until the 5/8 pole before fading at the Fair Grounds in his seasonal debut. He finished evenly late in a $25,000 sprint at Hawthorne in the fall, now gets blinkers for the first time and Cohen to ride. Bet to win and place and play a 2-6-7 exacta box.
          Hawthorne - Race #4
#5 MISS SAIPAN (7-2) Has speed, gets class relief for seasonal debut in field of unproven sprinters.
#1 CRYSTAL SNOW (3-1) Recent form a big plus but price too short with 1-for-34 record intact.
#7 ANNIE’S HOPE (8-5) Won at Del Mar on conventional dirt, set 1M pace when second at Turfway.
Race Summary With little recent form to summon and seven runners with a combined 1-18 record at 5-1/2F, class dropping returnee MISS SAIPAN gets the nod. She broke her maiden at this distance and showed speed at three tracks later in her 3-year-old season. Bet to win and place and play a 5/1,6/ALL trifecta.

FOR THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NOT WON A RACE IN 2025. THREE YEAR OLDS, 122 LBS.; OLDER, 125 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE SINCE FEBRUARY 13 ALLOWED 2 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $3,500
                RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                # 4 GORDY'S BOY 15/1
                # 6 GROSS PROFIT 7/2
                # 2 LAMPY 2/1
GORDY'S BOY has a competitive shot to take this race and is a competitive value bet given the line. Is a solid choice - given the 57 speed rating from his most recent race. He has been running admirably and the speed figures are among the best in this group. GROSS PROFIT - Should be given a shot here on the basis of the numbers in the speed section alone. Should be carefully examined based on the very good speed figure garnered in the last contest. LAMPY - Has to be given consideration versus this group displaying strong numbers as of late and an average speed fig of 71 under similar conditions. He looks respectable in this slot and I expect will be on the front end or close at the midpoint.

                  Aqueduct - Race #6 - Post: 3:49pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $36,000 Class Rating: 63

                  Rating:

                  #4 GOOD MISSION (ML=9/2)
                  #7 GLOBAL CHARMER (ML=3/1)

GOOD MISSION - Lone speed horses can be tough to run down. Here's a lone front runner facing sluggish sorts today. I think Atras is making a good move here. This filly can only profit from the shorter trip. Just missed hitting the board on March 23rd at Aqueduct. With decent odds right here, she has my interest. GLOBAL CHARMER - Jockey hops up aloft after getting to know the thoroughbred by riding last time around the track. That's always a green light. Quite frequently, I play a maiden that finished second easily ahead of the 3rd horse in her last outing.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 BLUE SUEDE SUE (ML=7/2), #1 PROFESSOR GRACE (ML=9/2), #5 POSSE ROCKS (ML=6/1),

BLUE SUEDE SUE - Should have at least finished in the money in the last couple of months in a sprint race to be worth it at modest odds in a sprint. PROFESSOR GRACE - In any event of 6 furlongs, I like to wager on a contender that has been looking good in sprint affairs of late. Doesn't look inspiring to me after the lack of any type of closing ability on December 13th. This filly registered a speed figure in her last clash which likely isn't good enough in today's event. POSSE ROCKS - I'm forecasting a lackluster try out of her this time around.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - GOOD MISSION - This filly is tops in the field in earnings per start. I'm making a wager on this one.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #4 GOOD MISSION to win at post-time odds of 9/5 or better
                  EXACTA WAGERS: Box [4,7]
                  TRIFECTA WAGERS: None

Race 2 - Maiden Claiming - 8.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $32000 Class Rating: 71

FOR MAIDENS, FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 120 LBS.; OLDER, 125 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $12,500. ARKANSAS BRED CLAIMING PRICE $20,000.
                    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                    # 7 ACOUSTICAT 2/1
                    # 9 FROSTED MIRACLE 7/2
                    # 1 UNION DAME 9/2
ACOUSTICAT is the most competitive bet in this race. Overall the speed figures of this horse look very strong in this affair. Has to be considered in this competition if only for the solid speed figure garnered in the last race. Has to be given a shot versus this field displaying decent figures recently and an average Equibase Speed Fig of 72 under similar conditions. FROSTED MIRACLE - The duo of Esquivel/McPeek has one of the strongest ROI percentages in this group. Will make a strong outing versus this field. UNION DAME - Could best this group based on the Equibase Speed Figure - 54 - of her last contest. With a reliable 58 average speed figure at the distance, seems well suited for today's race.

Tampa Bay Downs - Race #3 - Post: 1:45pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $22,000 Class Rating: 69

                      Rating:

                      #6 ARROW GHOST (ML=4/1)

ARROW GHOST - Faced tougher last time out at Tampa Bay Downs. Based on class figures, this is a weaker field, so I will put this animal on my list of contenders. This gelding is in fine condition, having run a strong race on Mar 14th, finishing third. Based on workouts, I look for this gelding to run a big race. I think this gelding is ready to run a good one. He's had enough races since the layoff and should be fit.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #4 ACQUISITIVE (ML=3/1), #7 ROME'S CONQUEST (ML=7/2), #2 D'ORO LEMON (ML=7/2),

ACQUISITIVE - Hasn't finished in the money in any sprint contests recently. Not likely to see him doing it this time either. I don't normally play a chalk horse that hasn't been to the track in the last few weeks. ROME'S CONQUEST - Don't figure that this pony is worth 7/2 in this race. D'ORO LEMON - This gelding hasn't had any positive results in short distance events in the last sixty days.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #6 ARROW GHOST is going to be the play if we are getting 1/1 or better
                      EXACTA WAGERS: 6 with 7
