Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    April 21, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Yonkers Raceway starts the week with a 12-race card featuring Leg IV of the Borgata Series. The $1.00 Pick 5 starts in
Race 5, and it has a $20,000 guaranteed pool. The $2.00 Late Pick 4 rolls in Race 9, and the sequence will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 9 (9:25 PM EDT)

5-Soho Firestone A (7/2>-Aussie bred just missed by a neck in its US debut and came from off the pace. Went the back half in 54.2 with a .27 last panel. Bumps up to face a bit better, and that might help the price. Should beat this group with a fair trip and will look for Yannick Gingras to provide an aggressive steer.

    Race 10 (9:45 PM EDT)

3-Janelle Granny (3-1)-Was in too deep in the Borgata and lands at a much more competitive level. Tim Tetrick should have the pedal down and has the gate speed to take charge early on. Does have a tactical advantage and that could be the winning difference.
4-Venturesome Arden N (6/5)-Raced from far back in all 3 Borgata races and looked dull. Gets Jason Bartlett back tonight and he should be more aggressive when the wings fold. This could be wake up time but will offer no value.

    Race 11 (10:05 PM EDT)

1-Ultimaroca (7/2)-Bumped up to this level in last after a win and then finished a beaten 3rd leaving from post 4. The two who finished ahead aren't in this group and did pace the back half in 55.3. This is wake up time and is only 1-12 this year.
5-Sweet Beach Life (4-1)-This is a fast 4-year-old and looking forward to see how the year will unfold. The Alexander trainee drew the 8-hole in the Pass Final last year. Then ate the field up drawing off by 5 lengths in a 150.1 at 49-1. Comes off an even effort in the 1st start off the bench at PcD could be overlooked here. Could have its way with this crew if dialed on high.

    Race 12 (10:25 PM EDT)

1-Ticker Tape Hanover (7/2)-Drops and is 0-9 this year but shouldn't be ignored at this level leaving from the rail. Did win 11 times in 2024 and may have finally met a beatable field.
3-Orlando Blue A (10-1)-Form has been slipping since late February and was in too deep in the 1st 2 starts since being claimed by the Abbatiello barn. Dropped down last week and suffered an IX break and now drops again. Will take a swing in a race with some question marks and ANap gets the nod tonight. He won the last time steering the 8-year-old back on 11-18.
5-Santana Hanover (9/5)-If the Joe B entry comes with a big try it can take a picture. But is only 2-14 at Yonkers, and will likely be bet down. That said, will use considering the pilot change to Bartlett and hasn't been in this soft in a long time. When this barn and driver team up they click at a 45% win rate.

    $2 Late Pick 4

    5/3,4/1,5/1,3,5
    Total Bet=$24

      #3
      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

      Thistledown - Race #2
#6 Over the Falls Fresh face may have some appeal in this spot, so get a look at her on the tote and track ahead of this. Seems like one of the ones with some snappy works along the way.
#2 Coloryoureggs Forward player couldn't quite stay at 4/5 last out, but she still might have a little room to improve after just two starts, and her bit of pace should keep her in the frame throughout.
#8 Vicky's Gift She caught a runaway winner last time out and may not find the same kind of romper here, and she draws well to track the splits from the outside. In the mix.
Race Summary Think this is a competitive enough group, but a fresh face could be along to pick things up in the final yards.
      Thistledown - Race #7
#1 Queenofthebuckeye She's back fresh with some honest finishing lines on her page, and her reliable form should prove competitive if she's able to pick up where she left off.
#3 Je Suis Rapide She caught a capable winner last time out and fits well back with this group, and she seems to have found the right kind of spots after a flat run last year.
#7 In My Memories She has the versatility to make something of this outside draw, and some of her better tries would probably translate to a perfect spy-and-pounce score here.
Race Summary Queenofthebuckeye almost always shows up, and she might get an OK run of things while saving some ground early on the inside.
      Thistledown - Race #8
#9 Peekaboo Mom She's back off the bench after last running evenly here in September, but that kind of effort might play OK from the high draw with a group that lacks much finishing punch. One-paced effort could do the job.
#1 Catty Remark Think she's going to be tough here, as there are a few pace players should show speed and cross over in front of her, and that might leave her with a great trip keeping tabs on the leaders while tucked in just behind.
#2 Pirinola She couldn't stay late in either of her first two tries, but I'm not sure there is a ton of depth in this one, so a forward trip could leave her in a position to slug it out late for a share.
Race Summary Peekaboo Mom could get a dreamy run of things while sitting close and potentially inheriting the lead as a couple of the forward players start to pack it in.

        #4
        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Parx - Race #1
#10 STOUTHEARTED (10-1) Can use his speed well in dreadful field, worth a price shot.
#4 AL AMEEQ (8-5) Towers over field on best but last two starts weren’t among them.
#5 BAD ADVICE (4-1) Going well since claim, has done the least wrong in here.
Race Summary The 12 entrants are running out of chances with a combined 11-for-236 record. STOUTHEARTED is appealing at 10-1 on the morning line with only 11 starts on the docket. He romped at 5-1/2F to break his maiden, set a fast pace and tired in a long sprint two back, then dueled inside on the turn in a 12-horse field last out before tiring. There’s not a lot of speed in here, so bet to win and place and play a 4-5-10 exacta box.
        Parx - Race #2
#9 SUGAR GRAY LEONARD (6-1) Eliminated at start, recovered well, tries to end long winless drought.
#1 BORRACHO CONCHO (8-5) Pulled away for first victory since 2023, moves outside in, one to beat.
#4 KHOPESH (4-1) Seeks duplicate of rally two starts back in his first start as a gelding today.
Race Summary SUGAR GRAY LEONARD was ping-ponged at the start, losing all chance, but he finished with mid-track interest behind a runaway, even-money winner. He earned the top last-out speed figure of anyone in the field, so give him the call for a win and place wager and 1-9 exacta box.
        Parx - Race #3
#4 APRIL CLOVER (4-1) Good workout, good spot to use her speed, good barn with layoff types.
#2 SPANISH GIRL (6-1) Hit board in 12 of 25 starts, cuts back to sprint off the claim.
#5 ON PARADISE HILL (9-2) Shook free from duel on turn en route to maiden-breaking win.
Race Summary APRIL CLOVER hasn’t raced in a year, but she breezed 5F in 1:01-1/5 from the gate to get ready for her 4-year-old debut. She runs for the cheapest claiming price of her career and could be off and gone to a front-end victory in a lineup that lacks speed. Bet to win and place.
