    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

    Thistledown - Race #8
#1 Kickstart There are a couple quicker players drawn toward the outside, and they might leave this guy in a beautiful spot while tucked in just behind the pace. Solid lean.
#3 Little Shance He left no doubt at 4/5 in his local debut, and he appears to be a good fit while rising back to try winners. Could take a little heat?
#9 Vernon's Best Think he's a potential price player to make some noise in here, as he might find an OK run spying the pace from out here. Some appeal.
Race Summary Kickstart looks tough today with what feels like a great trip waiting for him. Would be happy to take something like the 3/1 price.
    Thistledown - Race #1
#3 Classic Richie Think some of the other threats are going to be running from behind him, and he should get a great trip to get first jump into the lane.
#4 Vinny and Leo He has some room to come forward in the second start off the break, and he did some really good work here last year. Might be pointing for this spot.
#5 Cool Couple He's obviously got a little bit of talent, but he was no serious threat at 10 cents on the dollar last time out, and I wouldn't be too excited to jump in at another short kind of price.
Race Summary Classic Richie gets the edge in a competitive race, and I think he's going to be in line to prompt the splits from the start.
    Thistledown - Race #7
#4 Sacred Connection Nothing to write home about in the last one, but the two- and three-back runs going long at Mahoning were both pretty solid and could keep her in the mix at an OK price today.
#6 Special Beach She has been knocking on the door in those recent starts, but that's also a bit of a concern for me in a competitive group -- she might find someone who will jump up enough to leave her underneath again. Capable.
#7 Tizzy Jojo Think she's an OK fit with this crew, and she should find a pretty good spot while tracking up close from the wide draw.
Race Summary Sacred Connection has been really good going long over the last few months, and the move back to that kind of trip should work in her favor today.

      #3
      Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

      Turf Paradise - Race #3
#6 CURLIN’S LITTLE GAL ( Starts fresh, sheds 5 pounds, one to beat with an alert start.
#7 SENT BY ANGELS (6-1) Piling up the checks, awaited room on turn in latest, use in gimmicks.
#8 MOONLIGHT TRYST (5-2) Late interest for $20k in first start locally, bullet work since then.
Race Summary CURLIN’S LITTLE GAL raced 3- and 4-wide after she ducked out at the break and ‘advanced past mid-stretch’ in a rapid-paced sprint as the beaten favorite. She figures tough on the class drop in a field that lacks speed. Make a win and place wager on today’s Best Bet. Also play a 6/7, 8/ALL trifecta.
      Turf Paradise - Race #4
#3 EM N HOLL’S FIESTA (1 Improved since claim, steps up, doesn’t shy from ‘photo’ camera.
#4 IN THE VAULT (3-1) In top form, fits condition perfectly, seeks third win in a row off the claim.
#1 HIGH GUNNER (5-2) Failed at odds-on in four-horse field, won in same spot in prior race.
Race Summary EM N HOLL’S FIESTA is deserving of a class hike in her current form. She has two wins, two seconds and five photo-finish decisions in her last seven starts and she zooms in on $100,000 in earnings. Bet to win and place and play 3-1 and 3-4 exactas.
      Turf Paradise - Race #5
#3 SOLID TUNE (7-2) Useful sprint for new connections, can end long drought with third win on turf.
#2 SPICY RIDE (9-2) Save ground early, split horses late, won despite ‘drifting’ at this distance.
#6 CHAMAVILLE (2-1) Cali invader runs for cheapest tag of career off the claim, adds blinkers.
Race Summary SOLID TUNE forced the pace of the winning favorite and held third in a main-track sprint. She hasn’t won in two years but makes her third start of a cycle as one of two entrants with multiple grass wins. Bet to win and place and play 3-2 and 3-6 exactas.

            RECOMMENDED CHOICES
            # 12 MIDNIGHT TALKER 3/1
            # 11 VISUAL POWERHOUSE 7/2
            # 7 FULLY FUNDED 12/1
I lean toward MIDNIGHT TALKER here. Overall the Equibase Speed Figures of this animal look very good in this race. Has garnered reliable speed figures in dirt sprint races in the past. I can't pass on this gelding given one of the most competitive jock and handler combos on the grounds. VISUAL POWERHOUSE - In this field, this one is highly ranked earnings per start in dirt sprint contests. Well above average win clip at this distance/surface. FULLY FUNDED - He looks quite good in this spot and I expect will be on the lead or close at the midpoint.

              Mountaineer Park - Race #8 - Post: 9:55pm - Starter Allowance - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $14,200 Class Rating: 83

              Rating:

              #5 TEAM CONCEPT (ML=9/2)
              #9 HARLAN'S LEGACY (ML=6/1)
              #4 SUFFERIN SUCCOTASH (ML=15/1)

TEAM CONCEPT - I like to bet on this handicapping theory, a pony coming back off a strong contest within the last thirty days. The 83 recent race fig looks strong on paper. HARLAN'S LEGACY - The race may set up nicely for this mare's late rally. After the race aboard this equine on September 9th, the jock is going to know the mare much better. This horse wins a lot of cash per race. I believe she will boost that total in this field. SUFFERIN SUCCOTASH - The rider/handler twosome of Tapara and Inirio has a strong return on investment together. This mare is very familiar with the winner's circle at Mountaineer Park. I expect a repeat performance right here. Personally, I wouldn't worry about where she finished in her last race (fourth). Should improve in this race, with some decent odds.

              Vulnerable Contenders: #1 SHE'S SO BEARRISH (ML=8/5), #3 GORMLEY GIRL (ML=3/1), #8 KAIYAS SONG (ML=8/1),

SHE'S SO BEARRISH - This mare is always hitting the board, but just doesn't win. Hard to wager on her on the front end. Improbable that the speed rating she recorded on March 24th will be enough in this contest. GORMLEY GIRL - If you keep betting these sort of 'hanger' types, you're going to be disillusioned regularly. KAIYAS SONG - Doesn't seem inspiring to me after the lack of any type of closing talent on March 30th. Should be difficult for this thoroughbred to beat this group off of that last speed rating. Not probable to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's class figure, so put her on the likely underpriced equines list.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #5 TEAM CONCEPT to win if you can get at least 3/1 odds

                RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                # 7 RAVEN'S QUEST 7/2
                # 4 IN THE VAULT 3/1
                # 3 EM N HOLL'S FIESTA 10/1
My pick here is RAVEN'S QUEST. Shows signs of the look of a lucrative play, averaging a solid 85 speed figure which is one of the most respectable in this group. Lucarelli has her trained very well to break quickly out of the starting gate. Could best this field based on the Equibase speed fig - 84 - of her last effort. IN THE VAULT - Ran a very strong last race. Has been running in the most competitive company of the group of animals lately. EM N HOLL'S FIESTA - Could beat this group of animals given the 81 speed figure posted in her last outing. Barrio has a sound 15 percent win rate with entries running at this distance and surface.

                  Thistledown - Race #2 - Post: 1:20pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $17,000 Class Rating: 63

                  Rating:

                  #3 BAD BOY BOOGIE (ML=5/2)

BAD BOY BOOGIE - Trainer Romero moves this animal down the ladder based on class rating points to face a less competitive field. Look for a nice effort given this drop. This gelding is in fine form, having run a good race on Apr 2nd, finishing second. Widely used handicapping angle - 3rd or 4th start after a vacation generally leads to a big effort. This horse is live today. Past Performances show this thoroughbred with 3 improving Equibase speed figures. Diaz should be on a horse ready to win today.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 RUMBLE STRIP RON (ML=2/1), #7 BEAT THE DEALER (ML=7/2), #6 SPIN DOCTOR (ML=5/1),

RUMBLE STRIP RON - Didn't land in the money on February 10th at Mahoning Valley Race Cour. Followed it up with another lackluster performance. BEAT THE DEALER - This mount hasn't been close at the finish recently. 7/2 is not worth it for any horse in a sprint of 6 furlongs that hasn't hit the board in a short distance race recently. SPIN DOCTOR - This horse hasn't been close in either of his last two races. Can't wager on this steed in today's sprint of 6 furlongs. Hasn't even hit the board in a short distance event recently. Will be hard for this entrant to beat this field off of that last speed figure. Not probable to improve enough to run a figure close to today's class figure, so put him on the likely underlays list.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - BAD BOY BOOGIE - Based on my information this one could possibly get a lonely lead. Might take them straight to the winner's circle.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #3 BAD BOY BOOGIE to win if you can get at least 1/1 odds
