Al Cimaglia: Hoosier Park Early Pick 4 Analysis

    April 25, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Hoosier Park begins the weekend with a 14-race card. The 0.50 Early Pick 4 starts in Race 6. The sequence has a low 12% takeout, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 6 (8:15 PM DST)

    1-Crown Hanover (15-1)
-Steps up off a 2nd place finish and will use in a race with a scattered bunch. The issue is replay watchers may knock the odds down on 5-year-old who was blocked down the lane and is 0-5 this year. My take is Kyle Wilfong will get sucked around again and should be in the hunt. Probably wouldn't have won last week but could this time with a sharp steer.
2-Johnny Freight (6-1)-Willing to take a swing with a MVR shipper who has a good speed and might not mind the long HoP stretch. Time will tell how well the Pat Melloy entry fits, but this is another who can race at the top of the stack, be there at the wire and offer a solid price.
4-Rollinlikethunder (3-1)-Faced $30K claimers in last, got off the gate in a big way and landed on the point. Did fade down the lane to finish a beaten 5th. Can offer a better price than 9/5 here, gets post relief and shouldn't have to work as hard to get on the engine.

    Race 7 (8:38 PM DST)

7-Julerica (9-1)-Will look for a price with a veteran who has been camera shy and hasn't raced much in the last 2 years (8-0-2-2). This will be the 3rd start since being on the bench since 5-10-24. Did qualify 2 times in March and Jordan Ross, the usual driver sticks over the morning line choice #1-Rookie Hill who he drove to a 2nd place finish last time. Maybe the wrapper comes off tonight at a nice price.
9-True Blue Lindy (3-1)-Last week left from the 2-hole got on the point and drew off by 3-lengths at 3/5 and was claimed. Makes the 1st start for the Stewart barn and last week's pilot John DeLong is at the controls. This outfit is posting 36% winners in the past 30 days and should be racing near the top of the stack early in the mile.

    Race 8 (9:01 PM DST)

1-ER Rookie (5-1)-Drops after facing better and raced well enough to finish 2nd last time. Now lands at a better level for a picture. Marvin Luna is in a good spot to use the same plan and work a ground saving journey. Could connect for the 2nd picture this year with a sharp steer.

    Race 9 (9:24 PM DST)

3-Buzzsaw Russ (5/2)-If Buzz goes off close to 5/2 this might be the last time for a while to get that price. Put in 2 qualifiers at HoP. The 1st went in 152.3 with a 54.3 back half on 4-12. On 4-13 went 152.2 in the slop and drew off by over 12 lengths. Looks ready to down this group.

    $2.00 Early Pick 4

    1,2,4/7,9/1/3
    Total Bet=$12

Santa Anita Pick 6 for Friday, April 25

      April 25, 2025 | By Frank Carulli

Santa Anita’s $2 Pick 6 will begin with a $68,636 carryover pool this Friday, April 25. The road to solving the sequence will go for “miles” on end. Five races will be contested at the same distance, with nine or more entrants in each. Here’s a closer look:

SA 4th race (5:37 p.m. EST) -- PRECEDENT LUKE took aim at a suddenly sharp, class-dropping winner at Turf Paradise and finished third despite having ‘trouble changing leads.’ He makes his second start off a nine-month layoff with plenty of route race experience to summon. BRUISER appeared hopelessly beaten turning for home, but he closed like a wild horse in the final sixteenth to win going away at this distance. Post 10 is the drawback but the price is right to include him on the ticket.

SA 5th race (6:08 p.m. EST) -- HELLO KID O KID O ‘kept the heat on’ WE THE HOBBY through the far turn before the 45-1 winner passed by at 1-1/8 miles. Both California-bred 3-year-olds are major players again on the cutback to one mile. KIKURIDE, brushed out of the gate in her 6F debut, earned favoritism today with a late rush for third, finishing ahead of a next-out winner.

SA 6th race (6:39 p.m. EST) -- STOP DIGGING, no threat in a fast-pace long sprint two months ago, finished second in four consecutive starts on dirt late in her 3-year-old season. She did it while meeting four next-out winners in one race and earning comments like ‘fought between rivals’ and ‘took over at the quarter pole’ and ‘ran out of ground’ in the other three races. We’ll keep digging and give her one more chance to win today as a solo play.

SA 7th race (7:09 p.m. EST) -- Trainer Phil D’Amato is 14/5-4-1 in the last month with all but one winner going off at 9-2 odds or higher. He sent out 147 winners on the Santa Anita turf in the last three years. Play his uncoupled entry: MR. BRIGHTSIDE, who was disqualified from a win in this spot three starts back and finished third behind the pace-controlling favorite at 1-1/8 miles last out; and UPCHARGE, who finished third in his last two starts behind next-out allowance winners who posted 81 and 80 Beyer speed figures, respectively.

SA 8th race (7:39 p.m. EST) -- OUR MOONLIGHT returns from a smashing 6F debut in December with a pair of sizzling workouts. She lost momentum when crowded on the turn, but swung wide at the top of the stretch and blew past the 4-to-5 pace setter to win by 2-3/4 lengths in-hand. She gets Lasix for a 35 percent ‘repeat’ barn and gets the call in this $50,000 optional claiming race.

SA 9th race (8:09 p.m. EST) -- With room to spare on the Pick 6 ticket, go five-deep in the finale. GARDEN PARTY, the daughter of Grade 2-winning router Clubhouse Ride, followed the move of the trip-sitting winner and got up to finish second in mid-track in her first try at one mile. She worked smartly since then but still adds little value to the ticket. SEI BELLA finished in the money in two sprints thus far and will try to follow the footsteps of her dam, Awesome Baby, who won back-to-back graded stakes at 6-1/2F and 1-1-/16 miles, respectively, as a 3-year-old. O K ROSE lost momentum twice and regrouped to finish second as the favorite in the same spot, but she raced a bit erratically and hasn’t been seen in nine months. MISS MCKINZIE didn’t show her usual speed on the surface switch, but she dueled 3-wide on the turn in a long sprint on the dirt in the race prior, yielding to a next-out stakes winner. WINTER SNOW was heavily bet but had little to offer in two starts, but trainer Jeff Mullins is going well right now and intent on keeping her in MSW company off a three-month break.

      Suggested $2 Ticket
      SA 4th Race: 7, 10
      SA 5th Race: 4, 5, 7
      SA 6th Race: 1
      SA 7th Race: 3, 5
      SA 8th Race: 2
      SA 9th Race: 1, 3, 6, 8, 9
      Cost: $120

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Santa Anita - Race #1
#2 HEADED FOR OM (3-1) In tight early, loomed a mid-stretch presence, drifted late.
#5 YELLOW SUN DRESS (2-1) Second to streaking rival in seasonal debut, short price likely.
#4 CORPORATE VIOLETTE (8-1) Hit board in 10 of 22 on turf, nearing $100k, steps up in class.
Race Summary YELLOW SUN DRESS, the beaten 2-to-5 favorite off a 10-month layoff, loom a strong favorite again after race winner Certitude came back to win her third in a row and an 83 Beyer speed figure at one mile. But HEADED FOR OM offers better value in the rematch after she lost momentum in the opening quarter mile, ranged up alongside YELLOW SUN DRESS in the mid-stretch and finished a length behind. Bet to win and place and play a 2-5 exacta box.
        Santa Anita - Race #2
        #1 CASSIN’S ROSE (4-1) $200k sales purchase has the ingredients for a first-out victory.
#4 CASH CALL (7-5) Twice-beaten fave to start career, continues to turn heads in the a.m. for return.
#2 EASTWICK (7-2) Close-up inside but lacked late kick in debut, switches surfaces.
Race Summary CASSIN’S ROSE is working forwardly for her debut, capped by a :36-1/5 bullet from the gate last Sunday. Her sire, McKinzie, was a multiple Grade I winner of $3.4 million and a runaway debut winner at Santa Anita with a 99 Beyer at 7F. Eight of the last 20 first-time starters for trainer Mark Glatt finished 1-2 but only three were dismissed at less than 4-1 odds. Bet to win and place.
        Santa Anita - Race #3
#6 EMPRESS MATILDA (6-1) Took aim from off the pace in useful U.S. debut, could be the target today.
#4 RESOLVE (8-5) Back-to-back seconds in the same spot to start the year, the one to beat.
#3 ATIA (9-2) Stretched out, rallied past the pace controlling runner-up and the odds-on fave to win.
Race Summary EMPRESS MATILDA backed off the early pace to save ground, launched a 3-wide bid into the stretch and finished willingly, though out of the money behind the 4-to-5 winner. She won from up-close to the pace at 7F in her fall debut overseas and could revert to those tactics in this field. Her dam, Daahyeh, finished second in the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita. Bet to win and place and play a 3-4-6 exacta box.

            Fonner Park - Race #4 - Post: 5:21pm - Maiden Special - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $14,000 Class Rating: 51

            Rating:

            #7 P R CALL ME MAYBE (ML=5/1)
            #5 LITTLEJACKRABBIT (ML=2/1)

P R CALL ME MAYBE - This gelding is in nice physical condition, having run a nice race on April 5th, finishing third. Is ranked highest in (EPS) earnings per start. A dominant performance today can augment that total. LITTLEJACKRABBIT - Have to like the way Hines has raced this gelding back into shape off the layoff. Horse is well spotted in this sprint and I think he'll run well today. Have to give this gelding a good shot. Ran a sharp race in the last race within the last month. Look at this pattern of improvement. 24/49/51 are the last three speed ratings.

            Vulnerable Contenders: #6 LINDY'S STAR (ML=5/2), #4 SALT DADDY (ML=8/1),

LINDY'S STAR - No picnic to wager on any less than sharp equine in a sprint event if he hasn't finished in the money in a sprint in the last two months. SALT DADDY - Don't think this mount is worth 8/1 in this affair.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - P R CALL ME MAYBE - With the highest last speed rating of 53, this gelding looks exceptional against these thoroughbreds.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #7 P R CALL ME MAYBE on the win end if we get at least 2/1 odds
            EXACTA WAGERS: Box [5,7]

              # 1 STYLE TO FOLLOW 5/1
              # 2 VELVET VIXEN 3/1
LASTCHANCE ROMANCE looks quite good to best this group especially at such a decent 10/1. Has performed soundly recently in sprint races, posting a nifty 60 avg speed figure. A solid 82 avg class fig may give this filly a distinct class edge versus this field. Is tough not to look at based on Equibase Speed Figures which have been very good - 64 avg - of late. STYLE TO FOLLOW - This equine must be played at the expected high odds. The speed fig of 74 from her last affair looks quite good in here. VELVET VIXEN - Has run soundly when racing a dirt sprint race.

                # 2 VILLAGE PERSON 5/1
My selection in this competition is KENNY BE. Players should note that this racer runs with second time Lasix today. Must be given a chance based on the very good speed rating garnered in the last outing. This animal has a very good win percentage in dirt sprints. VEKINDA - Exhibits the look of a lucrative play, averaging a solid 84 speed rating which is one of the best in this group. The speed rating of 84 from his latest affair looks competitive in here. VILLAGE PERSON - Has posted reliable Equibase speed figs in dirt sprint races in the past. Win percentage one of the top in this field.

                  Evangeline Downs - Race #9 - Post: 9:07pm - Maiden Claiming - 5.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $12,000 Class Rating: 52

                  Rating:

                  #5 HIGHER CHARGE (ML=5/2)

HIGHER CHARGE - Don't often see a beneficial ROI like +57. This jockey/conditioner duo has done well together over the last 12 months. You have to really like that recent race figure, 37, which is the top last race figure of this group.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #2 MR. BRAD'S COWBOY (ML=2/1), #4 THEBOYZ WARNING (ML=7/2), #6 HE'S A REAL OUTFIT (ML=9/2),

MR. BRAD'S COWBOY - No success for this less than sharp equine in a short distance event over the last couple of months tells me that this colt is in a thorny situation THEBOYZ WARNING - Finished seventh last time out of the box. Would have to improve to be there at the wire in today's race. This runner ran a disappointing rating last time around the track. He shouldn't run much better and will likely lose in today's race running that number. HE'S A REAL OUTFIT - A bit of a lackluster effort when this gelding finished ninth. This questionable contender ran a substandard speed figure last time around the track. He shouldn't run much better and will likely get beat in today's race running that rating.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - HIGHER CHARGE - This is an automatic bet for me. This gelding is the top TM Power-rated animal and his rating towers over the rest.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #5 HIGHER CHARGE is going to be the play if we are getting 1/1 or better
