Santa Anita Race 1: Post: 1:00 PT Grade: B
Main Ticket: 3-Holly Goquickly
Backups: 8-Inner Fury (Ire).

Forecast: You can draw a line through Holly Goquickly’s last race – she was eliminated when attempting to rally at the quarter pole after appearing to clip heels - and key off her solid third race effort at this level two runs back. She gets an extra furlong to work with today and should be along in time under J. Hernandez and will get the bulk of our play in the rolling exotics in this modest maiden $50,000 claimer for older fillies and mares.

Santa Anita Race 2: Post: 1:32 PT Grade: C+
Main Ticket: 4-Rank; 2-Concorde Bridge
Backups: 6-War to Remember.

Forecast: Rank is listed as the 6/5 morning line favorite in this maiden optional claiming extended sprint, and while he’s had a lot of chances and isn’t one to trust, the turn back to a sprint might be what he’s always been looking for. If he can’t beat this field under these conditions, he’s off our list for good. Concorde Bridge has numbers that fit and a good second flight style for this extended sprint distance. He’s a one-paced griding type but in a soft field he has to be considered something of a contender.

Santa Anita Race 3: Post: 2:05 PT Grade: X
Main Ticket: 1-Fionello
Backups: none.

Forecast: Fionello was bid up $250,000 at auction as a yearling and debuts in a very soft maiden state-bred sprint for juveniles. The son of Stay Thirsty has done some very good work leading up to his debut and almost certainly will be an odds-on favorite and very likely winner in a field without any serious alternatives.

Santa Anita Race 4: Post: 2:36 PT Grade: B
Main Ticket: 6-Mrs. Astor; 5-Starry Heavens
Backups: 3-Mahina.

Forecast: Mrs. Astor finished eagerly without seriously challenging when second in the Santa Ana S.-G3 over 10 furlongs on this course last time out but at this marathon distance against a lesser field the J. Thomas-trained mare should be able get up in time. It what projects to be a slowly run race, the daughter of Lookin At Lucky can settle in the second flight and then accelerate when given her cue. Starry Heavens, a reasonable third in her U.S. debut in the same race our top pick exits, certainly has a right to improve and probably is the one to be concerned about the most.

Santa Anita Race 5: Post: 3:08 PT Grade: B+
Main Ticket: 1-Western Freedom
Backups: 7-Letmein.

Forecast: Western Freedom looked good graduating under hand urging only in his second career start and earned a number that should be sufficient to repeat on the raise in this first level abbreviated sprint for state-bred sophomores. He’s a not a particularly quick type but should be able to settle into a stalking position and then have every chance from there as a logical rolling exotic single.

Santa Anita Race 6: Post: 3:38 PT Grade: B-
Main Ticket: 10-Rexford; 3-Yogi Boy.
Backups: 7-Known Idea.

Forecast: Rexford has been facing tougher foes of late without a whole lot of success so this drop into the restricted (nw-3) $30,000 claiming ranks is warranted. Freshened since February, the P. D’Amato-trained gelding has won over this course in the past, is solid on numbers, and should be capable of producing a winning late kick from the second flight. Yogi Boy is in good form and is realistically spotted after a clever win from starter’s foes over this course and distance. He'll need a bit of improvement in the speed figure department but might have it in him.

Santa Anita Race 7: Post: 4:08 PT Grade: C+
Main Ticket: 2-Chasing Ryder; 8-What the Buzz.
Backups: 10-El Ondeado; 11-My Pal George.

Forecast: Here’s a messy affair for low level maiden claimers. We’ll double the race on our main ticket but suggest you go deeper if you feel the need. Chasing Ryder plummets from straight maiden to maiden $12,500 for the high percentage J. Mullins barn and adds blinkers while stretching out for the first time. He’ll get plenty of play by default. What’s the Buzz is bit intriguing at 5-1 on the morning line. His runner-up effort in Phoenix last month charts pretty well at this level and before that he was overmatched facing tougher on grass on this circuit. This looks like a reasonable spot, though his low profile outfit hardly inspires confidence.

Santa Anita Race 8: Post: 4:38 PT Grade: B
Main Ticket: 1-Exultation; 2-Vantastic.
Backups: 6-Ottoman Prince.

Forecast: Exultation is an ex-classer moving up a notch following a confidence-building $25,000 claiming win over this course and distance in January, and while the layoff is a concern the work tab looks healthy so we’re expecting his typical genuine effort. From the rail, he’s guaranteed an ideal ground-saving trip under regular pilot J. Hernandez. Vantastic is a seven time winner over the local lawn and is a strong it at this level. He’s a one-paced grinder who always tries hard but sometimes can be a bit pace dependent.

Santa Anita Race 9: Post: 5:08 PT Grade: B+
Main Ticket: 2-Traegar
Backups: 1-Judge Miller.

Forecast: Traegar has been off since November, but he’s won fresh in the past, is fast on figures, and hails from a high percentage barn that sends them fit and spots them right. The lightly raced six-year-old always fights hard when challenged and can be counted on to take advantage of a moderate pace scenario that should promote his pace pressing style. We’ll make him a win play at or near his morning line of 3-1 and a major push in our rolling exotics.

Santa Anita Race 10: Post: 5:38 PT Grade: B
Main Ticket: 7-Blevys Tiger; 3-Big Pop.
Backups: 10-Blue Wildcat.

Forecast: Blevys Tiger was nosed in a downhill turf dash at this level last month and will be tough to beat if she can duplicate that effort on the flat course. This will be her second start off a layoff, and if she doesn’t go backwards she’ll be a major factor throughout. Big Pop is soft in the speed figure department, but she’s lightly raced and eligible to improve with experience for the high percentage M. Glatt barn. She could easily step forward in a big way today after winning at this level on dirt last time out.

Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

Northfield Park has a 15-race card. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11, and it will be my focus. The sequence has a low 14% takeout and a $10,000 guaranteed pool. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 11 (9:50 PM EDT)

2-Jim Blue (7/2)-Gets much-needed post relief and drops to the level of its last win on 3-30. Should be out and rolling when the wings fold. A top of the stack trip should be coming and could be tough to tackle.
3-Dragthechipsmyway (3-1)-The Ron Burke entry hasn't been very sharp but that could change here. Comes right back, draws inside, and drops to a more competitive level. Ronnie Wrenn is between the pipes this time and should be very close to the one above all the way around.

Race 12 (10:13 PM EDT)

3-Flemsteen (9/2)-Chris Beaver 4-year-old ships in from MVR and has won 4 of 10 starts at Nfld. Aaron Merriman gets the nod and he wins 19% of his drives for this barn. Should be in play early on and could offer a fair price.
7-Rose Run Zoom (5-1)-Last time, left into a 27.1 opening quarter from post 5. Worked to get the top and still drew off by over 5 lengths facing this kind. Comes off its fastest race at Nfld and can double up with a similar effort.
9-Scottish (3-1)-Ships in from Yonkers and cashed checks in the John Brennan Series. Should fit will here and has won 3 of 6 at Nfld. Could get off the gate in decent shape following #2, who has some gate speed.

Race 13 (10:36 PM EST)

2-Andale Andale (9-1)-Needs an inside post draw to have the best chance to win and gets significant post relief here. The price is right to take a swing and could surprise with a sharp drive.
5-The Golden Jet (3-1)-Likes the slop, won last on a wet track and now bumps up. Might be overlooked, has the gate speed to get on the point again. Has beaten this kind before and best to respect as a double up possibility.
6-Elver Hanover (7/5)-Has been facing better and was in too deep. This is a spot to shine, but not sure can win without having the lead going into the stretch. Ronnie Wrenn knows the same and should be aggressive when the wings fold.

Race 14 (10:59 PM EST)-

1-News Caster (2-1)-Cory Kreiser owns, trains, and drives this 5-year-old who has hit the board in 12 of 24 at Nfld with 5 pictures. Will overlook the last race in the slop from the 9-hole and the trip was rough. Meets a beatable field, this horse isn't as camera shy as the rest and should get a smooth trip leaving from the rail.

Santa Anita - Race #1

#7 Tavolara	Long maiden claiming turf routes always feel like a spot for horses who just can't quicken at all against their better peers. This one at least has a little tactical pace and should have a big jump on a handful of the other reasonable threats. Decent race flow option in an iffy race.
#9 Global Consort	Wouldn't mind being two deep with these two forward players in hopes that one of them sticks around late. This one hasn't found much late in her starts, but she's capable of something better than that last one.
#3 Holly Goquickly	She's another with some room to bounce back, and she has a couple honest finishing lines on her page that make her tough if she shows up today.
Race Summary	Tavolara has some appeal from up close in a race without a ton of pace, and she may offer an OK price here today.

Santa Anita - Race #2

#2 Concord Bridge	Still think this guy might have a little room to improve on the turf at some point, but he's in the mix here if he is able to get back to anything like the two-back run.
#4 Rank	There are some really serious names in the company lines -- Journalism, Rodriguez, Baeza -- and he's meeting absolutely nothing like that here. The one to beat.
#3 Grinnell	He hasn't shown a ton of serious late kick, but there are a couple lines on his page that would keep him in the mix here. Some midrange price appeal.
Race Summary	Concord Bridge can bounce back today with something better, and he might end up in an OK spot tracking the pace today after the dud.

Santa Anita - Race #10

#13 Ultimate Hy	Plenty of bounce-back potential here after the clunker last out, and her form prior to that was competitive. Plenty to like if she goes.
#3 Big Pop	Honest form so far from her, but she'll try the turf for the first time today at what figures to be a relatively short price, so I'm probably willing to watch this one if the price is short.
#10 Blue Wildcat	She's got some pretty reliable finishing form that could bring her along late for this one, but I worry about the fact that her honest form still doesn't include a whole lot of seriously threatening efforts.
Race Summary	Ultimate Hy looks the part here after a dull run, as her prior form stacks up well here and I'm willing to give her a pass for that last one.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 TRAIN THE TRAINER (ML=4/5), #3 IRON MAX (ML=8/1),

TRAIN THE TRAINER - Don't figure that this less than sharp equine has what it takes to cross the finish line in first this time. IRON MAX - 8/1 is not worth it for any entrant in a sprint of 6 1/2 furlongs that hasn't finished in the money in a sprint contest lately. This horse just hasn't looked fit lately. This colt notched a speed rating in his last race which probably isn't good enough today.

ROCKSALOT - The morning line odds on this gelding are higher than those of the other entrant from the shedrow of trainer Mullins. Often the longer-priced part of a 'split' entry wins. This trainer has an ROI of +246 with horses first time out. This jockey and conditioner's equines have been generating a beneficial return on investment. SEAGER MAN - This dam (Specter) has had strong success with first out winners, cashing 100 percent of the time. When Escobedo and Hanson unite on horses the return on investment has been fabulous at +50. With no recent past performance lines, one of the variables I look at are trainer stats, and Hanson has a +181 pct ROI clip with 1st time starters. Hanson is giving this one Lasix for the first time. Nice. EL ONDEADO - All systems look good for this gelding. Last work, 2nd fastest of the day, shows he's fit and ready. Faces state bred foes today after finishing seventh versus 'open' company on April 4th. I think that the addition of blinkers today will keep his mind on the race at hand. Ranked at the top in EPS (earnings per start). Another sign that this animal is the class of the race.

CHASING RYTER - Difficult to wager on any thoroughbred in a sprint race at 9/2 when he hasn't shown any positive results in sprints in the last 60 days. WHATS THE BUZZ - 5/1 is not priced right for any racer in a sprint of 6 furlongs that hasn't hit the board in a sprint affair recently.

I think MYWIFEKNOWSITALL is a very good choice. Must be given a chance here on the basis of the figures in the speed section alone. Put up a very good speed figure last time out. Solid average speed figures in dirt sprint races make this animal a key contender. ROYALLY BLUE - Garnered a sound Equibase Speed Figure in the last race. Can run another good one in this contest. The average class fig of 79 makes this horse tough to beat. DENVER'S ALLEY - Will most likely be one of the leaders of the bunch going into the midpoint of the race. The speed rating of 89 from her latest race looks respectable in here.

2^nd race [OC 100k/C, 1 1/8 mi] – (6) Bendoog has four second-place finishes in a row including a pair in March at Oaklawn including a stakes race where he missed by a neck after trouble at the quarter pole. (1) Otello was a second-level allowance winner last month after a layoff. (5) Film Star was a stakes winner at Laurel Park in December. (4) Classic Catch was second in the Excelsior at Aqueduct and actually cuts back in distance.
4^th race [Md Sp Wt, 1 mi TURF] – (6) Noble Confessor will make his 2025 debut as a maiden that ran second in the Pilgrim (G2) and the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf last year for Todd Pletcher and St. Elias. (1) Freedom Glider comes back from a winter break with a third and a second in turf races last fall and gets first-time Lasix. (2) Uncatalyzed debuted at Tampa Downs where he had the lead and finished second for Chad Brown. (5) Reteko ran well in five turf starts at Aqueduct and Fair Grounds and shows up as a new gelding.

F] – (2) Almostgone Rocket won her first three races last year with a stakes win at Saratoga and came back after a nine-month layoff to be second in the Matron at Gulfstream Park. (3) Leslie’s Rose was a Grade 1 winner last year and gets some class relief after a series of Grade 1 stakes through July and makes her 2025 debut. (1) R Disaster was second by a neck in an Oaklawn Park stakes and ran only first or second in seven starts. (5) Haulin Ice won 3 out of 4 starts including the Matron at Oaklawn.
9^th race [Westchester (G3), 1 mi] – (2) Bank Frenzy won his last four starts including three stakes in a row with two against NY-breds and in the open-company Stymie. (1) Bishops Bay won his last two including the American Pharoah at Oaklawn. (5) Worcester was first or second in his last seven starts with a stakes victory at Laurel. (7) Quint’s Brew had the lead in the stretch in the Carter (G2) last month and missed by a neck to a deep closer.
