Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    May 5, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Yonkers Raceway begins the week with a 10-race card. The $2.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 7, and the sequence will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 7 (8:45 PM EDT)

2-Humble A (5/2)-This will be the 2nd start off a sick scratch after cashing a couple of smaller checks in the Borgata Series. The DiDomenico entry has won 7 of 11 starts at Yonkers but is winless this year. Will look for an aggressive steer from George Brennan and the extra distance shouldn't hurt chances.
4-Finvarra A (7/2)-Has been off since 4-21 but rolled a 55.3 and back half that night in Leg 4 of the Borgata and Jason Bartlett gets tonight’s assignment. The Bartlett-Dilloian combo posts 46% winners and should be forwardly placed from start to finish.

    Race 8 (9:05 PM EDT)

2-Racing Rampage (7/2)-The entire field has a total of 2 wins on the year. The Alexander trainee did win 8 of 16 in 2024 and has won 8 of 18 at Yonkers. That said, the 5-year-old is lightly raced and does have issues. Comes back in sequence and this could be wake-up time. If Matt Kakaley gets on the engine, he could steal a quarter, and it could lead to an overdue picture.
5-Dunkin' (5-1)-The added distance might help the 5-yr old who had 12 wins in 18 starts in 2024 and is 0-9 this year. This is a struggling group, so will take a swing here and fade the 2-1 program chalk #6 Admiral Hill. George Brennan could settle in off the gate and look to roll late. The opening half mile might be spicy, and Dunkin could finish best of all at a square price.

    Race 9 (9:25 PM EDT)

3-Dougs Babe A (7/2)-Recorded its first win of 2024 in Philly on 4-25. As is the case with almost all of this crew, wins have been scarce this year. Dexter Dunn grabs the lines, and the upswing could continue as he has options when the wings fold.
7-Promiseland A (5/2)-My thinking is the extra distance will help the Engblom entry who has only 2 wins since
1-1-24. Jason Bartlett could leave and land no worse than in the pocket and either trip could work for a picture.

    Race 10 (9:45 PM EDT)

1-Heaven On High N (6-1)-Mark MacDonald is starting to heat up and will take a swing with a Stga shipper who has hit the board in 8 of 16 at YR with 3 pictures. Likes to race near the top and could get that trip here at a nice price.
5-Santana Hanover (7/5)-Faced the $15k claimers in last and left from the 8-hole. Now drops to the level of its last win that came 2 back. Got on the engine and couldn't be caught. This race probably goes through the Joe B trainee.

    $2 Late Pick 4

    2,4/2,5/3,7/1,5
    Total Bet=$32

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

      Thistledown - Race #4
#2 French Benefits Not sure you're getting much of a price here, but I think she's going to drill this group if she has any liking for the main track at all. Her only previous dirt try came here in the career debut, and she's better now than she was then.
#3 Gran Roxy She has enough pace to stay close to the top choice early while moving around two turns, and she has run like the type of horse who has a good chance to handle this trip.
#1 Slew Crown She has a couple of honest running lines on her page, but she's also a bit of a question going two turns. Wouldn't argue too hard with anyone landing here. Kind of tough to split the top three.
Race Summary French Benefits should be in the frame early, and she could be gone if Gran Roxy doesn't press her too hard early on.
      Thistledown - Race #5
#1 P H Factor There are three or four of them with pretty similar running styles, so I'm hoping the rail draw will force them into at least a mildly aggressive trip into the first turn. Better stuff would do, and there hasn't been a better route rider here for your betting dollar the last couple years than Batista.
#3 Moreau Price could be a bit short here, otherwise there are a lot of reasons to like this guy today. He's likely to be in another good spot while waiting to take the first jump at the top choice.
#6 Eddie M He's another who can be up on the splits, and he controlled a route spot easily at Mahoning a couple starts back. Fast enough to take command, but he can also tap the brakes a bit and prompt if needed. Lots to like.
Race Summary Fun spot where I'm hoping P H Factor will flash a little bit of speed and try to ration things early on. Price might be OK today, too.
      Thistledown - Race #3
#1 Thru The Vine Wonder if he's the right midrange price to spring a mild upset while rising off the claim. He should be right up on the splits with the chalk and could inherit the lead if that one doesn't stay.
#4 Spellcast He looks to have a bit of a pace edge on most of this small group, and he can relax just a touch and press the top choice if that one wants to go early. The one to beat.
#5 Need to Know Basis He doesn't typically finish with a ton of energy, and that might leave him looking at another one-paced underneath finish. He's not totally impossible if a couple things go his way, but I think it's tough to build the case.
Race Summary Thru the Vine has been a little cheap for this kind in the past, but the recent form is there, and he should find a great spot right up on the splits in a small group.

        #4
        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

Will Rogers Downs - Race #1
#5 STRAIGHT AHEAD (7-5) Lightly-raced 5-year-old has no excuse in first start for a claiming tag.
#7 PREVIOUS CARGO (4-1) Improved while landing minor awards from off the pace in recent sprints.
#4 WARHAMMER (9-5) Tries to bounce back from disappearing act with second-time Lasix in latest.
Race Summary STRAIGHT AHEAD exits MSW company and has two respectable one-mile runs to summon and outlast this field. He was out-kicked by the 4-to-5 winner when second two starts ago, then was unable to sustain an inside run on the second turn last out as the two favorites finished 1-2. Bet to win and place and play 1-4 and 1-7 exactas.
Will Rogers Downs - Race #3
#1 MY KINDA TROUBLE (2-1) Made good first impression at Will Rogers, taken to repeat from the rail.
#2 RASPBERRY MARTINI (8-5) Could duel with ‘Trouble’ but showed passing gear when she won.
#3 GRACE THE KINGDOM (9-5) Couldn’t pounce on duel in same spot, might get the same opportunity.
Race Summary MY KINDA TROUBLE arrived from Oaklawn Park, shook a duel with the 3-1 runner-up and held safe the late-running favorite to win with the fastest speed figure of her career. She ran 1/5 of a second faster than a $25,000/nw3 claimer won by RASPBERRY MARTINI on the same card, the same condition she tries to conquer today. Bet to win and place and play 1-7 and 1-8 daily doubles.
Will Rogers Downs - Race #4
#8 GOSPEL EXPRESSION (3-1) Proven miler is in good form cycle at age 7, moves inside out.
#7 SLICK CITY GIRL (6-1) Compiled 5/2-1-2 record in most recent long-distance tests.
#1 TEARDROP TIARA (5-2) Returns to claim level after runaway win for $25k in four-horse field.
Race Summary GOSPEL EXPRESSION set a controlled pace off the rail, braced for a challenge from the winning favorite through the turn and ‘fought on’ to finish second. She tracked the pace to the top of the stretch and romped in the race prior. Bet to win and place and play a 1-7-8 exacta box.

              Parx Racing - Race #6 - Post: 2:59pm - Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $18,000 Class Rating: 74

              Rating:

              #3 SUPER CONSTITUTION (ML=9/2)
              #1 BOOM BOOM KABOOM (ML=3/1)
              #4 BARGAINING POWER (ML=15/1)

SUPER CONSTITUTION - Diaz brings him back again. I advise you stay with this hot gelding. That last effort must not have been too hard on this gelding for him to be able to race again so quickly. Just see his most recent speed fig, 72. That one fits well in this bunch. Look at this pattern of improvement. 34/60/72 are the last three Equibase speed figures. BOOM BOOM KABOOM - Likes to go to the front end and the fact that today is a shorter trip should be advantageous. BARGAINING POWER - The Apr 23rd race at Penn National was at a class level of (87). Dropping to a lower level considerably, so he should be in a good place.

              Vulnerable Contenders: #2 JEBOLOGIST (ML=5/2), #8 BIG BROWN SHOES (ML=9/2), #6 MIDNIGHT GETAWAY (ML=6/1),

JEBOLOGIST - This thoroughbred hasn't shown much effort in the last two affairs. BIG BROWN SHOES - Can't invest in this mount in today's sprint of 5 1/2 furlongs. Hasn't even finished in the money in a sprint race recently. Will be tough for this entrant to beat this field off of that last speed figure. Improbable to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's class figure, so put him on the possibly overvalued contestants list. MIDNIGHT GETAWAY - Awfully difficult to wager on this mount when he hasn't been showing any signs of readiness recently. Unlikely for this horse to make a winning move with no recent success in a sprint event. Don't think this less than sharp equine will make an impact in today's race. That last speed rating was mediocre when compared with today's class rating.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #3 SUPER CONSTITUTION is going to be the play if we are getting 3/1 or better

                # 1 RED GUN 4/1
                # 6 DARK TIMBER 8/5
                # 5 MASS APPEAL 8/1
I've got to go with RED GUN. He has been travelling solidly recently while recording strong speed figures. Is a strong contender based on figs posted lately under today's conditions. No strangers to the winner's circle, Blankenship and Weatherly will probably have this gelding breaking away from the field. DARK TIMBER - Have to think this one will run well following the quick major improvement. Has been running in the most competitive company of the group of horses in this race lately. MASS APPEAL - Has been racing very well and has among the best speed in the race for today's distance.

HYPNOTIC FLAIR is the most favorable wager in this race. Had one of the best Equibase speed figs of this field in her last contest. May best this group here, showing decent figures of late. Risk takers should take a good look at this one as this filly has one of the best win percentages at this distance in this group. CHANGE ORDER - Has some positive angles which make this one a bet. CALL ME PENNY - Well above average win clip at this distance/surface. Ran a solid last race.

                    Rating:

                    #5 ROLLIN BLACKOUT (ML=10/1)
                    #3 GRACE THE KINGDOM (ML=9/5)

ROLLIN BLACKOUT - This mare is the longer price of the 'split' entry from the barn of Dixon. This is the only real presser in the race. Last out, finished seventh in the slop at Remington Park. Have to give a better effort right here. GRACE THE KINGDOM - This filly is in good physical condition. Ran third on April 15th.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 RASPBERRY MARTINI (ML=8/5), #1 MY KINDA TROUBLE (ML=2/1),

RASPBERRY MARTINI - Doubtful that the fig she earned on April 15th will be enough in this affair. MY KINDA TROUBLE - Ran well to finish first on April 15th, but hasn't had even a single morning drill since then.
